1 MARCH 2016 Ocala Sailing Club Newsletter Lake Harris Cruise to the HideAway Restaurant Commodore s Comments Ahoy Sailors, All of our sailing opportunities are away this month as we have no scheduled events here on Lake Weir. Lake Monroe, Mt. Dora, Palatka and St. Augustine all have regattas this month. So hook up your trailer and let s go. March is my favorite weather month. Goodbye cold and say hello to spring. Never fear, our eating and drinking will not be interrupted this month. Join us at the Pasta Faire for Buccaneer Night on March 3rd and on to our potluck at Jim and Lisa s Sunday the 13th. It ll be good to see Jim s progress on his trimaran build. Hope to be seen and see you all, be there! The most important thing we do in March is get ready for April. Jan Cole collected $45 for the 50/50 Raffle and Maylynn Hancock pulled the tickets for the scratch-off winners: Art Twitchell, Jan Schumacher, Jim Edens, Bob Cole and Sandra Harton.

He introduced our new members, Paul Hoffman and Holly Flagg. They sail a Rhodes 22 that they purchased in October and sailed with us on the Lake Harris Cruise recently. Welcome aboard Paul & Holly!

Maylynn was 6 years old (2/22). Paul Straub appraised the members of the club s recent loss of Merv Wescoat.

There were 19 members present including 2 new members. Jan Cole collected $45 for the 50/50 Raffle and Maylynn Hancock pulled the tickets for the scratch-off winners: Art Twitchell, Jan Schumacher, Jim Edens, Bob Cole and Sandra Harton. The 50/50 $22 winner was Bob Cole. Commodore Herb Moore called the meeting to order at 8:20 PM thanking Sandra for hosting the dinner with a big applause of appreciation from all. He introduced our new members, Paul Hoffman and Holly Flagg. They sail a Rhodes 22 that they purchased in October and sailed with us on the Lake Harris Cruise recently. Welcome aboard Paul & Holly! Photo in sidebar. Birthdays for the month of February were: Amy Bonnert (2/1), Tom Ayers (2/10), John Hult (2/12), Mark Statler (2/13), Herb Moore (2/14, Jim Edens (2/19) and Juliane Mendonca (2/28). Maylynn was 6 years old (2/22). Paul Straub appraised the members of the club s recent loss of Merv Wescoat.His daughter, Barbara Wescoat (also a member), advised Paul that Merv had passed away on February 11th while visiting his son in Georgia. Jan Cole gave a Treasurer s Report. Our balance on Jan 31st was $ Art Twitchell, the Secretary, noted the minutes for January were in the February Newsletter. Both reports were approved. Old Business: Paul Straub and Jim Edens made comments on our Lake Harris Cruise to the Hideaway. We had a great adventure in spite of the rain and temp. Ed Sims covered the Feb 13th Rum Race and scores. There were 3 Harpoons racing and each sailboat had 3 sailors which allowed for visiting members a chance to crew. We had great weather and lots of fun. See photos and scores on the next pages of this newsletter that cover the Rum Races. New Business: Herb Moore reminded us that our spring Regatta was coming up on the April 16th & 17th weekend at Kiwanis Beach. Bob Cole will be planning on a meeting in mid-march to pull together details in time for a successful event. The meeting was moved to adjourn at 8:45 PM All approved except Ed Sims. OBRS: Jan Schumacher announced that they were passing the Gavel on to Ross Martin. Bob Cole took a few moments to educate our new members of OBRS and it s significance. This time we had 3 sailboats and 13 sailors. Later Lynn and Maylynn met us at the restaurant for lunch, our destination. Paul Hoffman & Holly Flagg s Rhode 22 with Amy Bonnert and John Cicio. We are all dressed for inclement weather. We re on our way, the weather s fine. Page 3

4 OSC Cruise Lake Harris (Continued) We set sail between 9 and 10 from the boat ramp. The weather was sunny, breezy and cool but we were dressed for it. The lakegrass at the head of the cove required some of the sailboats to adjust their centerboards and rudders to release it s dragging grip. Thanks to Jan Schumacher for these great photos! Page 4

5 OSC Cruise Lake Harris to the Hideaway (Continued) We arrived at Lake Harris Hideaway as the band was setting up for lunch which meant we made good time. Our table was so long to accommodate the 15 of us that it was starting to block the entry. Soon it began to drizzle outside. It was dry inside and the camaraderie, food and spirits were delightful, but the TV above the bar reinforced that the rain was here for the afternoon. Braced for the adventure of the open seas and the blessings of the generous clouds we gathered our little fleet and set sail to return to our port of origin. Venetian Cove Boat Ramp in Leesburg. 8 Recent Rum Races Remembered February 13, 2016 Remember the Rum Races! The Spring Series started Sat. Jan 30, 2016 at 11:30AM from Sims Beach. However, due to lack of wind, Feb13th was the first actual spring competition. There was good enough wind to have four races using two race courses. Several members arrived who jumped on as extra crew. Since on this day three Harpoons were racing, each sailboat had a crew of three. The races were informal and lots of fun especially since they were all one class. There were only Harpoons racing today but our Rum Race welcomes other Portsmouth rated vessels Page 8

9 Rum Races continued However, we may have to draw the line on some vessels, like seaplanes!! There is another race day on April 2. So think about joining in on the competition It s only $5 to enter. The rum is a drawing You could win one of these!! Page 9
