1 Volume 89, Number 03 A View From Above Steady As She Goes I feel like the skipper of a well handled boat sailing in a steady benign breeze declaring Steady as she goes! We are very fortunate to be blessed with such talent at this club, and the volunteers just keep stepping forward. Joe Altmann is like the eveready bunny tackling chore after chore as Vice Commodore in charge of the House. Ashley Basanese is filling in the role of Rear Commodore, planning and putting on the many social events that are so important to the club. I will not steal their thunder by listing all that they are doing, but they are both very impressive. What is really impressive is how our new members are stepping forward also. Phillip Hebner, formerly employed by West Marine, joined our club a few months ago and has volunteered to be chair of the Lighted Boat Parade committee. This is a huge task and Kelly Nesheim has volunteered to help Phillip learn about the task. One of the unsung heroes in our club, in my opinion is John Mizell. He not only keeps our web site up and running, but also maintains all of our sound system at the club. As if this is not enough he has put on a spectacular WISS program this year. If you have not attended these seminars, you are really missing out. I have started going even if the subject matter seems like it may be a stretch from the sailing topic. Some

2 From the Vice Commodore Déjà vu All Over Again of the non-sailing seminars have the most intense involvement from the audience with many questions being asked demonstrating genuine interest in the subject at hand. We should all give John a hearty Thank You for all he is doing for the club. Some of the Wednesday nights have been Wine tasting events put on by Jack Gordon. These have been great events also. Who does not want to learn more about wine? I showed up for my first wine tasting with my favorite Zinfandel and actually won some money coming in second for the night. This shows that you do not need to be an old hand at this to come out close to the top. Fred Molnar and Bridget Binko put on an excellent IPA tasting event, which really required a fine sense of taste to decipher the finer nuances of IPA beers. Thanks to Fred and Bridget for putting this very fun event on. I want to declare: It is finally time to stop praying for RAIN. As if the storms were not enough, mechanical failures with harbor equipment have added to the problem and we find ourselves hopelessly shoaled in again. At this point it is not clear if the harbor will be open in time for our first Wednesday night sail. I guess when the shoal is finally cleared, we will all appreciate sailing and boating that much more! With no imminent threat of stormy seas we are off to a good start for the new year and we will be able to keep Steady as she goes as our motto for the rest of the year! The unofficial start of the sailing season is scheduled this month with the first Wednesday night sail on March 15 th. As of this writing, the harbor is still closed due to winter shoaling and Dauntless, the workboat that assists the Twin Lakes dredge, is out of commission. This is starting to look like last year, déjà vu all over again, with the harbor closed for months. So let s all be patient and hope for the best. The Sunday night dinner on Feb 19 th was a sold out success with everyone enjoying the Asian theme buffet by Fresh Prep Catering. If interest continues, it looks like we ll try another theme dinner soon to see if we can make it a regular event at the Club. The WISS seminars have also been a big success with many people attending the varied and interesting presentations. The report from Fresh Prep is that their Wednesday night sandwiches are very popular so we ll continue to provide them thru the rest of the Wednesday night talks. Thanks to John Mizell for organizing the WISS seminars again this year. Saturday, March 5 th was our annual Work Day and I hope you were able to come out and join the team of volunteers to help with the Spring cleaning. I ll have a more detailed report next month. 3 Speaking of volunteers, I have always thought that the success of our Club is based on the wonderful volunteers who donate their time and expertise to keep the Club operating. A review of our Events Calendar shows the many activities throughout the year, all planned and organized by Club volunteers. For example, when you show up at the starting line for a race, you ll find the committee boat on station and the marks set. If you attend a social event, you ll find beautifully decorated tables and a wonderful dinner served on time. The Club owns and maintains a variety of sail and power boats and all are kept in tip top shape for our use. How does all this happen? The answer is our terrific volunteers. If you re already participating, I offer a heartfelt Thank You. If you re not, I encourage you to get involved. Come out and meet your fellow members. It s fun and rewarding. Feel free to contact me at Twosailors@cs.com and I ll help get you started. See you at the Club Joe Altmann Vice Commodore Rear Commodore Report January and February have been full of social events!! We had a full house of over 80 people for the kick off Potluck on January 29th. Bill Lee gave an informative and fun presentation of Merlin. In February, we shared in cheering for the Super Bowl with fun games for everyone and Game Day Food. Valentines Day was an intimate evening with a delicious meal by Fresh Prep Kitchens and wonderful decorations thanks to De Schuyler and Marilyn Diola with help from Rob & Ric. Of course the Wine Tasting Wednesdays were a huge hit as well with special thanks to Jack Gordon and crew. Valentine s Day Dinner fun! 3

4 Recreational Boaters of California Thanks to SCYC members for RBOC donations RBOC would like to thank all SCYC members who made a 2017 donation to RBOC. Once all donations have been received, we will draw the name of the winner for a dinner at the SCYC. If you haven t made any social events, we have a few options for you. March 4th will be the ever popular Crab Feed which is our first fundraiser of the year. It will benefit social events for your club, so come out and eat crab! This event always sells out, so make your reservations to (831) or rsvp@scyc.org. Don t forget to come to the club on March 17th for the St. Patrick s Day Themed Friday night dinner (Corned Beef and Cabbage). I cannot wait to see everyone at the club for the first Wednesday night BBQ on March 15 th. Please check the website at scyc/calendar/ for all upcoming social events and watch for the Tuesday blasts. If you are not getting the blast please contact the office at info@scyc.org. You can also find posters for upcoming events at the Club. We are always looking for volunteers, if you or a friend would like to volunteer for any upcoming events please feel free to contact Greg, Jennifer or myself and we ll get you going. I m looking forward to seeing you at the club. Ashley Basanese Rear Commodore Fix the Renewable Fuel Standard RBOC Asks You To Add Your Voice To Petition RBOC wants boaters to add their voice to the petition asking the new Administration to limit the amount of ethanol in gasoline to levels that will not damage marine engines. So far, over 500,000 boaters have signed the petition. You can find the petition at RBOC files concerns about Delta closures for California Water Project RBOC has filed its concerns with the negative impact that the California WaterFIx would have on the ability of recreational boaters to navigate and recreate in the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta. The planned temporary closure of significant recreational waterways including Twin Sloughs and Mildred Island are unacceptable, unmitigated and unconstitutional. RBOC s concerns have been filed within the public comments on the 2016 Final BDCP/California WaterFix EIR/EIS. This is in addition to extensive comments that RBOC has submitted within this proceding in an effort to protect the ability of recreational boaters to navigate and recreate in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. 7 Friday Night Procedures Book Exchange As most of you know we have a book exchange in the hallway. Thank you everyone who contributes to the exchange. Please don t bring old sailing books/magazines. Barbara Booth Staff Commodore 365 Things to do in Santa Cruz California EvEnts & LocaL HappEnings BRE# Get to Know Santa Cruz Like a Local Mike Schweyer For those of you who are not familiar with Friday night dinner and those of you who are, the following are the procedures to make Friday night dinner more enjoyable for everyone. Due to Jody & Ray s (Fresh Prep Kitchen) fabulous meals, the seating can be limited. To make it easier and more convenient for everyone, we would appreciate it if you would follow a few simple guidelines: The only way to reserve a table is to come down to the Club and put a jacket, hat, bag etc. at your seat. Please be ready to sit down by the first seating (between 5:30pm and 6:00pm). If you are saving seats for other people, please make sure they arrive by the first seating. If there are no other seats available, and you or your guests have not arrived, the seats will be given to people that are already there and ready to sit down. There is a waiting list behind the bar. Usually the second seating starts between 7 and 7:30pm. Please ask the bartender to put your name on the list as soon as you arrive. Your name will be called on a first come first serve basis. We strongly suggest that you arrive before six o clock to better your odds at seating (first seating) and the menu item of your choice. We thank you for your cooperation and look forward to seeing you on Friday nights. 7
