Volume 89, Number 10 October 2017 Rear Commodore Report Just because summer is coming to an end, doesn t mean our fun together is over! The Social Committee is busy planning through the end of the Jack & Jill year to make sure every event is special for our members. I want to start off by thanking Sydnie Moore for hosting the Jack and Jill Regatta. I had so much fun last weekend on race committee watching the club

Santa Cruz Yacht Club Spinnaker The Future of the Club do what we love, race! What an amazing event with 28 boats registered. The Corinthians closed out September with their annual Prime Rib Dinner Fundraiser on September 30th. This was a great event that supports the Corinthian Program. If you go for any reason, the Garlic bread is a good one! The first weekend in October Dave Emberson will be hosting the annual Lobster feed. Don t forget to RSVP this event usually sells out!! The Social Committee is very busy planning the first SCYC Pumpkin Carving Contest. Save the date, Sunday, Oct. 29th starting at 3:30. If you would like to help with this event please send me an . Keep an eye out for carving rules in the weekly blast soon. I always love to hear feedback on events as well. Don t hesitate to let me know what you would like to see.and participate in. Most yacht clubs realize the importance of the youth in the club and their impact on the club s future. In short, as we all age we need new young blood whose passion is sailing, to promote the future vitality of our club. I have sat on many board meetings and listened to many reports from different youth directors on the activities with the youth. I have always been too busy to get involved with the youth. This all changed when Mike Gross asked me to assist with the West Marine Fun Regatta. I was on Black Pearl with Buster Long working as a safety boat. There were two classes of boats racing that day; El Toros and FJs. There were about 20 El Toros and about 7 FJs. The El Toros were the younger group and were single handing their boats. The FJs were manned by two people who were a little older. The day started with very light wind as we towed about 6 of the El Toros out to the start area. Mike came out and instructed us on setting the marks for the regatta. The first of the races went off without a hitch as the wind was a light 8-10 knots. I was inspired as I witnessed the relationship between Buster and the kids as he cheered them on, calling them out on a first name basis. I was peppering Buster with questions about how detailed he gets in his instruction with the kids, regarding rules and tactics. I was duly impressed by his answers. He is covering all bases with the kids. About halfway through the second race the wind Ashley Basanese Rear Commodore ashleybasanese@gmail.com 2

Santa Cruz Yacht Club Spinnaker Sheet started to pick up and we had our first FJ capsize. It took us awhile to get this boat righted. Once we got them going again, we turned to witness the mayhem on the course as multiple boats were flipping. I was horrified when we came upon another FJ with only one crewmember visible, Buster calmly asked where the other crew member was and the visible crew replied that he thought he was under the boat which was keel up ( gone turtle ). Fortunately there is an air pocket under the FJ when it has turned turtle. We all yelled for the young man to swim out and his head popped out from under the boat. This kid was all of eighty pounds soaking wet. With Buster giving instruction, this menhuden was able to right the boat and drag his partner on board. By the time we got this boat going, there were multiple El Toro boats lying on their side. Sometimes the kids could right the boat, but it would be full of water. Buster has perfected a technique to singlehandedly pull the bow of the El Toro up and empty all of the water, saving the kids 20 minutes of bailing. The wind had increased to the point that they called off the racing for the day. We helped the kids lower the sails on the El Toros and towed them back into the harbor. I was very impressed with the level of instruction these kids are getting, and their prowess. This is a first class program that the club should be very proud of. Looking at past results, with the sailing venue we have at our doorstep and the instruction these kids receive, it is little surprise to me that this program has produced many a world class sailor. Our Junior sailors also do incredibly well in local regattas. It was apparent to me that this is truly a labor of love for the coaches and directors. Thanks to everyone involved with this program, past and present for your excellent work. Barry Keeler Commodore From the Vice Commodore September was a busy month for racing events. Santa Cruz Yacht Club s Elyxir faced off against Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club s Lucky Duck to vie for the Veeder Cup. The winner of this match race is awarded the Veeder Cup Trophy, which was donated by Grace Veeder of the Stillwater Yacht Club in It was tight racing, but on the last day, the wind failed to show, resulting in a 2-2 tie. MPYC, we ll be back next year. The winds gods were also unfavorable for the annual Windjammer Regatta. This regatta is the longest running sailboat race on the West Coast dating back to This was the 75 th running of the race with 9 boats entered, but light winds forced the cancellation. Better luck next year. The Melges 24 s had better luck with plenty of wind and 12 boats showing up at the start line. And the annual West Marine Fun Regatta was indeed a fun regatta with 33 young sailors competing in CFJ s and El Toro s. Both One Design and SCORE races were well attended and the Jack and Jill Regatta had excellent weather and a great turnout with 28 boats competing. Thank you to all the competitors for coming out to race and to the Race Committee for running the events. Speaking of sailboat racing, if you haven t been sailing in the Tuesday night Catalina Races, you are missing out. This was first set up by Commodore Barry Keeler a few years ago as a way to get Catalinas (not normally race boats) out on the water for some friendly competition and to hone your sailing skills. Over time, participation has increased where up to 20 boats show up on the starting line. And it s not restricted to just Catalinas, everyone is invited. So if you re new to racing or a seasoned racer, or just want to improve your sailing ability, what better way to spend a Tuesday evening than out on the water. Don t forget the Corinthian Prime Rib fundraiser to be held on Saturday, September 30 th. This is a great dinner and supports the Corinthians. There s also a Cruiser s Potluck on 3

Santa Cruz Yacht Club Spinnaker Regatta Report As the fall begins it never ceases to amaze how much volunteer time, energy and effort goes into the SCYC racing calendar. September was a big month with no fewer than 7 events on the calendar. Sunday, October 1 st. Our club potlucks are also not to be missed as the food is delicious and plentiful. Although we had a successful Work Day earlier this year, there are still some maintenance items that need to be done. I m looking for a small crew to help paint the interior trim and front door, paint the stairway railing and seal the tile on the deck. If you have some time to help spruce up the Club, please contact me at Twosailors@cs.com or See you at the Club or on the water, Joe Altmann Vice Commodore Slate of Officers Annual General Membership Meeeting Sunday, November 5th at 4:00pm Joe Altmann Ashley Basanese Jason Lauer Secretary Treasurer Director Director Director Director Port Captain Regatta Commodore Vice Commodore Rear Commodore Tom Postlewaite Scott Walecka Homer Lighthall John Buchanan Appointed by Commodore Appointed by Commodore Appointed by Commodore Appointed by Commodore (nominated by regatta committee) Windjammer - As the delivery crews for the Santa Cruz 70 Merlin and Buona Sera entered the Golden Gate at sunrise on Friday Morning they were blasted with a kt. 80 degree easterly blowing out the gate. These were early signs that this would not be a typical Windjammer Regatta in its 75th Edition. That easterly quickly died off in the early morning, and by start-time boats were riding the ebb tide out the gate in record breaking heat that the Bay Area experienced over the Labor Day Weekend. The fleet did pick up a bit of typical westerly for a few hours once outside the gate and the choices were to try and go outside for more of a building westerly, or try to rhumbline it down the coast to Santa Cruz. Merlin went outside and could see nice westerly wind out beyond the shipping channel but was never ever able to make it far enough offshore before the wind died altogether. Buona Sera took the inside route and held the early line honor lead until the wind shut off altogether for her as well. In the end, the entire Windjammer Fleet retired from the race marking the first time in the recollection of old timers of such an event where no boat was able to make it to Santa Cruz before starting up the engine. MPYC will hold the cup for another year, and plans are already in the works for another SCYC Challenge in On Saturday there were spots of nice wind and good racing and the two Santa Cruz 52 s, SCYC s Eylxir and MPYC s Lucky Duck, looked spectacular dueling on the waters off Monterey. The boats were tied 1-1 after the first day. On Sunday the committee tried hard to get in the required races on Sunday but it was not be with the two boats left in drifting conditions for much of the day splitting a couple light air races. 6 Santa Cruz Yacht Club Spinnaker Veeder Cup Chair Fred Molnar, Barbara Booth, Skip and Stacey Ely, and crew, put in a great effort to organize this year s challenge which included a Match Racing Practice Sessions in Santana 22 s leading up to the event. These were not only fun to participate in but also exciting to watch. Fred Molnar and I plan to try and continue to build a match racing program within the club with some chalk talk and more on the water sessions in the Santanas over the winter and next spring. If you are interested in participating talk to Fred or me. West Marine Fun Regatta - Tina Verutti lead efforts to run the West Marine Fun Regatta this year and Mike Gross stepped up to be PRO. The plan included a scaled back effort and only one day of racing which seemed to work well, espcially for Juniors from around the Bay Area who participated. Seven FJ s and 19 El Toros in two divisions had a great day of sailing in a variety of conditions. Fourteen boats that signed up for the regatta were from out of town and it s become a popular venue with the young sailors who get the usual great sailing but also a chance to squeeze in a trip to the Boardwalk! One Design/Melges - Tina Verutti and Don Collignon also led efforts to invite the West Coast Melges 24 fleet for a two day regatta on Sept. 16 and 17. Twelve boats participated and the entrants came from as far away as Santa Barbara, Tahoe, and SF Bay. On Saturday the Melges joined in with the Fall SC27 and Santana 22 One Design Fleets with Barbara Booth and Bert Lemke and Crew providing stellar RC work to get a lot of racing in for everyone. The fleets were treated to great Santa Cruz conditions. On Sunday Bret Gripenstraw pitched in to be PRO and was able to get the Melges out for a second Natural Bridges surf run. Kent Pierce from Santa Barbara took 1 st place honors for the weekend and SCYC s own Ian Collignon took 3 rd 6 Jack and Jill - The Jack and Jill Regatta seems to grow every year and it s in large part to great effort the Syd Moore puts in to organize, promote, and execute a great day on the water. Twenty-Eight boats signed up in 5 divisions for this year s event and were treated to perfect conditions for double handing and family sailing. It s truly a case of everyone coming away feeling like a winner just being able to participate in this fun, but

October 2017 Santa Cruz Yacht Club Spinnaker Sheet also competitive, regatta. Tina Verutti took away the prestigious Jack and Jill Cup and is required to prominently display the trophy in home for the next year. Thanks also to Rob and De Schuyler and their crew who stepped up to provide the race management work to prepare for and run the regatta on the water. Make sure to put this event on your calendar for next year and come out and join the fun. Fall SCORE - turnout is a bit lighter than previous SCORE events after an ambitious Spring and Summer racing season for a lot of the big boats, but the Fall SCORE participants have been treated to some great conditions and tight racing. Buona Sera leads in A Fleet, and Rio Leads in B Fleet going into the last SCORE races in October. Christina Shaw has organized a great crew to run the SCORE racing series starting this fall. 7

OctOber 2017 Santa cruz Yacht club Spinnaker Jack Otis Licensed Yacht & Ship Broker Special thanks also to Gene Sofen who puts many tireless hours in preparing the Whaler for these regattas, and also organizes the finish line crew to sit on the wharf for the Windjammer Regatta each year, and to Mathew Coale who keeps the Ernie Rideout shipshape. These are valuable assets to the club and we are lucky to have folks who put in time and effort to take care of them. I ve certainly left out many names of folks whoput in time and effort to run our great racing program at SCYC and there will be time to honor more of J/Boats Dealer Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay 1070 Marina Village Pkwy. #108 Alameda, CA those who helped out this year at the upcoming regatta appreciation dinner. 9 Santa Cruz Yacht Club Spinnaker Sheet 2017 SAP 5O5 World Championship Severn Sailing Association was a flurry of activity on Wednesday evening as competitors prepared for the 2017 SAP 5O5 World Championship. Skippers and crews were busy performing last-minute adjustments to their boats, tuning the rig and working on other gear. SSA members considerately cleared every other dinghy off the lot to accommodate the influx of 89 5O5s, which came from 12 different countries. Action got underway Thursday with the pre-worlds, which provide the sailors an opportunity to practice and study the venue. Racing in the 2017 SAP 5O5 World Championship will be held Sunday through Friday on the Chesapeake Bay with organizers hoping to complete at least 10 races. Annapolis resident Sandy Grosvenor - a World Sailing and US Sailing International race officer, judge and umpire - is leading the on-water management along with a top-notch committee from co-host Eastport Yacht Club. There are eight former 5O5 world champions in attendance and all rate among the pre-regatta favorites. Mike Martin and Adam Lowry are the defending champs after capturing their first title together last year in Weymouth, England. Martin, who previously won worlds in 2009 off San Francisco with Jeff Nelson, is considered a heavy air specialist. In analyzing the 2017 SAP 5O5 World Championship, class president Pip Pearson estimated that as many as 20 boats had the ability to win a race. Pearson listed nine very viable candidates, including the aforementioned Martin/Lowry, Holt/Smit (SCYC) and Hamlin/Zinn. Also likely to be in the mix are Mike Quirk and Curtiss Hartmann, the six-time Australian national champions. Californians Ian Pinnell and Dave Shelton (SCYC) also have quite a track record of success separately with the former winning the 2008 world championship and the latter posting a pair of podium placements. Pearson also mentioned Australia s Malcolm Higgins and Marcus Cooper, Britain s Andy Smith and Roger Gilbert and San Francisco-based stalwarts Ted Conrads and Brian Haines as teams that certainly could make some noise. 505worlds2017.com Holiday Magic! This year the 32nd Annual - Lighted Boat Parade is on Saturday December 2, This year s theme is Holiday Magic! The parade begins at 5:30, but the fun in the harbor starts much earlier. The fun begins when you make the decision to enjoy the parade! Plan ahead for food, parking and any weather that might come on that day. By the way, there will be road construction leading to the harbor on the Crow s Nest side so plan for that. If you are planning to enter a boat or you want to sponsor the parade (or know someone who would like to sponsor the parade) then please let the Parade Committee know. We are looking for more help this year, especially in the area of social media and live-streaming on Facebook. We can use all the help we can get! If you are interested in entering a boat, sponsoring the parade, or pre-ordering a T-shirt, then send an to PhilHebner@Gmail.Com. Phil Hebner Chairperson 9
