Cdr Steve Johnston, P Commander s Corner Hello everybody. We celebrated our Power Squadron fellowship on the 19th at our Picnic. Thirty-three members assembled at Peninsula Park for great food, judging for awarding the Commander s Cup and a Blessing of the Fleet. The weather was great, many stories were told, plans made and general catching up with others. I just recently returned from a cruise through the Panama Canal. Many members have done this and there is something to share when you cross something off your bucket list. Doing something like that you join the fraternity of folks that have accomplished a dream that sometimes takes many decades to complete. The 2018 Commander s Cup is awarded to Ev Ashworth, Captain of Goodspeed, a Glacier Bay Cat. Ev and his vessel met the high standards and equipment requirements for this trophy. Congratulations to Ev on his vessel and commitment to the ideals of the USPS.

It is structured to help the captain, first mate, and crew with the knowledge and tips to use in planning, provisioning, outfitting the vessel and understanding the safety issues involved in pushing out from the dock. 3 Oh, well, maybe someone will fall in love with Coyote in Long Beach. Dozens of minor tasks fill our day as we find places for our stuff and find stuff we forgot we even had as we lived on our sailboat. We take small victories as we carry box by empty box off the boat and every evening we re rewarded by a few more square inches of deck under our Lt/C Dan Coverdale Executive Officer Boxed iin After about a month in Ventura Harbor Yacht Yard, La Mouette is now in our slip on the beach side of Ventura Harbor, where we live on her with our dog and dozens of cardboard boxes. feet and a stately and graceful home to call our own. We re very lucky people. Our Hunter sailboat Coyote is in Long Beach, after a three day sleep-over in Marina Del Rey as part of the Sail Fest Boat Show. Sleep-over is used advisedly; we thought we might get some offers at the show, but nary a one appeared.

5 up and 36 people attending the Saturday night dinner - the due date to sign up was May 25. Hopefully you have signed up as it will be fun! Coming Events Lt/C Lorna Londborg, P Administrative Officer We had 33 adults and one very cute baby attending the 2018 Blessing of the Fleet/Commander s Cup Picnic at Peninsula Park. Four boats also attended the event, with Ev Ashworth winning this year s Commander s Cup. The raffle prize of a $50 gift certificate for Le Petit Café was won by our own Commander Steve Johnston. I want to give a big thank you to Jim and Mary Baldwin for doing the boat inspections for the day. Steve Johnston and Pat Haskins judged boats for The Commodore s Cup. Thanks also go to Bill York for cooking those delicious hamburgers and hot dogs and for leading a very nice prayer to bless the fleet. Likewise, thanks to all the VSPS members for bringing the yummy side dishes to accompany the provided potato salad and baked beans. This is always an enjoyable event to attend and this year didn t disappoint! 6 Ready to Cast Off or Hoping to Cast Off? You are in Luck! Cruise Planning, a course for all boaters, will begin in September This course will cover the main concerns and needs for boaters planning to leave the dock for a short or longer cruise. It will help you plan a safe and enjoyable voyage to the Channel Islands and points beyond. It is structured to help the captain, first mate and crew with the knowledge and tips to use in planning, provisioning, outfitting the vessel and understanding the safety issues involved in pushing out from the dock. It is helpful in that we discuss the topics as they relate to both sail and power boats. Instructor: Pat Metheny AP who is an experienced cruiser in both local waters and long range/long time cruising. Dates: Monday nights beginning September 10 and ending on November 12 with the exam. An optional session about planning an actual trip to Santa Cruz Island is possible for November 19 if the students are interested. Time: 7:00-9:00 p.m. Place: Ventura Yacht Club, 1755 Spinnaker Drive, Ventura (upstairs dining room). Cost: TBD -- it is about $55 for texts and materials. When you call the number to enroll, you will be given the exact amount and the address for sending the check for the class. Reports of Officers: EO Lt/C Debbie Braun-Lawson Debbie reported on the progress for the fall line-up of classes. Admin Officer Lt/C Lorna Londborg May 12 Boating Expo; May 19 Picnic, two boats are coming and 23 people are signed-up to date. Various duties have been assigned to VSPS members. Robyn may bring the Mariposa. June Father s Day cruise to Santa Barbara. Ten boats are signed-up to date, with a possible 2-3 more boats coming. The dinner on Saturday night has 33 people signed-up so far. Santa Barbara Yacht Club will join us for cocktails on Friday evening. July & August are boating months, so no specific events are planned. September 29 th has been reserved at VYC for a VSPS event, and the event is still in the planning stages. Details will be provided at a later date. Treasurer Lt/C Dan Cahn Dan reported that there is now an agreed upon fee schedule for new members: If a new member or family joins, there is a one-time administrative fee of $20.00 assessed when joining, plus the usual single member or family rate. $93.00 is the annual single member rate. $ is the annual family rate. So a new single member would pay $ ($93 + $20) and a new family would pay $ ($ $20). Secretary Lt/C Chris Stine A motion was made to approve the minutes from the April 2018 Executive

8 Board meeting, and the motion was seconded and approved. Executive Officer Lt/C Dan Coverdale Dan reported various brainstorming ideas he and others had for activities and classes to offer, and which led to additional brainstorming at the board meeting: Commander Steve Johnston Absent no report. Ongoing Business/Activities/Classes None reported. Completed Business/Activities/Classes Having a Chili Cookoff in September, perhaps we could combine with VYC as has been done in past years. Short two-to-four hour seminars such as: how to operate an inflatable; commanding a bridge & coordinating learned boating skills; and how to read a chart. Another member suggested ideas on how to generate enthusiasm among our new members, and possibly introduce new members with a local one-day cruise to Anacapa. This could also be an opportunity for more experienced members to show new members how to perform specific operations in boating, such as how to set an anchor. One suggestion was that personal phone calls or s are much more effective to invite or recruit new members to participate in activities than to send out large ings that are impersonal. A suggestion was made that VSPS utilize the on the water guidebook, a companion book to the ABC class. This generated discussion about insurance coverage that could and/or should be co-shared with National. Dan Cahn volunteered to research and coordinate with Dan Coverdale and Vince Gerretz as well as check with other squadrons as to what sorts of on-the-water type training or programs they offer. None reported. Future Business/Activities/Classes Darrel O Connell volunteered to memorialize the digital photos members take. As an idea for how to do this, there could be an address to send the digital photos to, and he would manage the photos. Perhaps they could be kept at the VSPS website.
