2 page 2 SAFETY ON THE WATER Arnold Rowe, AP, Webmaster and Safety Officer DEALING WITH TIDAL STREAMS The effect of a tidal stream is a significant factor when navigating on any point of sailing, but can be crucial when sailing to windward. If you are in a small boat sailing to windward against a strong tide, it can often prevent you making any headway at all and it may be best to enter a port or anchor until the tide or wind changes direction. If this is not possible, you should try to keep to shallow water, away from the strongest stream. The presence of a strong tide will also affect the strength and direction of the apparent wind. When the boat is beating against the tide, the apparent wind speed will be reduced because the boat is being carried downwind. The converse also applies. Call John for info at: or john@brewingtongroup.com When the tide is running across the wind on the lee bow, advantage can be gained because it increases the speed of the apparent wind and alters its direction so that the boat is effectively freed and can point higher. When the tide is on the windward bow, the effect is the reverse, so try and tack when the tide changes to keep it on the lee bow. 3 page 3 SKIPPER BOB S FAMOUS (ALMOST) CUISINE THIS IS MY SECRET RECIPIE FOR SPLIT PEA SOUP you gonna love it You will need: 2 cups of dried split peas 1 cup chopped celery 2 Bay leaves 2 quarts water 3 Ham bone (leave a little Meat on it) 1/2 cup chopped carrots salt and pepper 1/4 tsp Thyme I use a crock pot for this, but a plain old pan will work. Sort and wash the peas. Add the water and bring to a boil. Simmer for 2 minutes. Remove from heat cover and let set 1 hour, Add the rest of the ingredients, season with salt and pepper. Bring to boil and simmer until pre soft about 2 to 3 hours. Remove bay leaves and ham bone, put soup mixture in a blender or food processor, blend until smooth Return to pot. trim meat from Ham Bones and cut.into small pieces, return to pot. \Check seasoning and add salt or pepper as needed. Reheat and serve see you on the water Skipper Bob Arrowhead Event schedule for th Annual Catalina Island Wine Fest To all you wine lovers out there, the 16th Annual Catalina Wine Fest at the Isthmus on Catalina Island is coming up quickly. This year it is scheduled for Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 1:00 to 4:00. As usual there will be lots of winery booths to visit and sample from and a couple of breweries. There will also be music, complimentary appetizers, and a silent auction. Tickets went on sale May 1st and they do sell out so if you re planning to attend, get your tickets early. They are only $45.00 each. If you plan to join us please let me know at (909) so I can plan an Arrowhead get together. I m anxious to see the changes at the Isthmus as well as enjoying the wine fest. You can take the Catalina Flyer over for the day if you don t want to bring your own boat. This is always a very fun, enjoyable day and I m hoping you will join us. Arrowhead Cruise to Little Harbor July This is a beautiful little cove just past Cat Harbor. The anchorage is sandy and averages about 25 deep. The waves are held down because of a rock reef so look at the chart which lays them out. There is a beach, camping sites, fire rings, porta-potties a telephone booth, and interesting hiking trails. The plan is to get there Friday morning, anchor fore-and-aft with a little orchestration. (take a nap) Friday evening we will have a party on the Freeman s boat, FAN SEA FREE. Saturday evening we will BBQ on the beach and share a side dish. You might even want to stay another day or. Do it, you ll be glad you did. More to come P/C Red Label

4 page 4 June 2017 Squadron Education Report Submitted by P/C John Walker, SN Come for the Boating Education Stay for the Friends We started our first ABC class of the season with three students, all of whom had attended the seminar discussions held at Freemont Park. John Brewington is the principal instructor and is assisted by other squadron members who need to update their ABC training which qualifies them for the required Calif. Boater s Card. Starting next January, a Boater s Operating Card will begin phasing in starting with boaters under the age of 18 and will continue through 2025 when all boaters will require the card with few exceptions. 5 page 5 The Arrowhead Sail and Power Squadron June 14th dinner meeting will be at the Riverside Lawn Bowling Club. All members are encouraged to come and try a new activity. All equipment and instruction will be provided by the club. Please wear flat soled shoes to preserve the quality of the lawn surface. Rick Sherwood will prepare a TRI TIP Barbeque dinner for the meeting. ($20) Bowling instruction and play will begin at 6 PM. Try to be there as early as possible. The Bowling greens are located in RIVERSIDE FAIRMONT PARK at 4020 BOWLING GREEN DRIVE. Boat Operators certificate On January 1, 2018, a seven-year phase-in of the California Vessel Operator Card (CVOC) requirements will begin. See below for the phase-in schedule. By 2017, the California St ate Parks Division of Boating and Waterways *SBW) will begin issuing the CVOC to boaters operating motorized recreational vessels on California waterways who can show proof of passing an approved vessel operator examination. The new law (SB941)promotes boating safety education for California boat operators. Once issued, the CVOC remains valid for the boat operator s lifetime. Where can boaters take exams? Boaters will be able to choose to take approved boating safety courses or challenge exams online, in the classroom or through home study.
