3 page 3 Letters to the Editor Here s where your helpful and constructive ideas could be exposed to the light of day. XO Brett Nunnally, AP May Log Darrell Sausser, SN Log Editor, P/C, etc SKIPPER BOB S FAMOUS (almost) CUISINE AN OLD SOUTHERN APPETIZER FRIED DILL PICKLES I served these at a log bending party and they were all gone in no time. 1 egg well beaten 1 cup milk 1 tbs flour 1 tbs Worcestershire sauce 6 drops hot sauce (or to taste- I like a little more) 3/4 tsp salt 3/4 tsp black pepper 3 1/2 cups flour 1 quart sliced dill pickles wesson or canola oil for frying combine the first 5 ingredients, stirring well. Set aside. Combine 3 1/2 cups flour, salt and pepper, stirring well. Dip pickles in milk mixture and then dredge in flour mixture. repeat process, deep fry in hot oil, 350 degrees until pickles float to top and are golden brown. drain on paper towels serve hot or cold I hope you all had a good time at the Castle Meditrreanean restaurant.. Our next stop is Mimi Restaurant in Moreno Valley. Remember to call me to let us know you are coming to the meeting. Well it s that time of year that the Newport to Ensenada Race is going on. Arrowhead had two boats entered from arrowhead But Darrell Sausser s Escapade had to pull out. due to engine problems. Hal Gayer in Insouciant crossed the finish line at Ensenada in 23:13:39 hours after the Newport start. No corrected time. Good work. Now back to the things we might over look. We often overlook the boat cooling system. When was the last time you changed the coolant in your system? It needs to be changed so it can protect the system. It also helps combat corrosion along with lubing the water pump. And at the same time you change the coolant you get a good look at those clamps and hoses that could need replacing. Remember Boating with confidence Thanks again XO Brett Nunnally a couple of scenes from the April meeting. Sandy and Jan chatting over dinner; Our speaker for the evening

By 2017, the California St ate Parks Division of Boating and Waterways *SBW) will begin issuing the CVOC to boaters operating motorized recreational vessels on California waterways who can show proof of passing an approved vessel operator examination. The new law (SB941)promotes boating safety education for California boat operators. Once issued, the CVOC remains valid for the boat operator s lifetime. Where can boaters take exams? 6 SAFETY ON THE WATER Arnold Rowe, AP, Webmaster and Safety Officer CURENT STABILITY TESTING OF BOTH GASOLINE AND ULTRA-LOW SULFUR DIESEL page 6 Practical Sailor contributor, Chesapeake Bay sailing blogger, and chemistry guru Drew Frye is back in the lab with his beakers, test tubes, and mason jars investigating fuel additives, this time fuel storage additives. Current test involves both gasoline and ultra-low sulphur diesel. The fuel storage additive study is proving to be a tricky one, partly because treated gas is capable of being stored for very long time in the right conditions. Samples in our accelerated lab testing were still within the recommended octane specifications after the equivalent of two years of storage. Diesel, in the right conditions, can be stored even longer and still stay within specification. Sometimes it is not what has been added to your fuel that matters, but what is missing. The most obvious difference between gasoline and diesel during vented aging tests is that gasoline samples evaporated and required replenishment at the mid-way point. Studies by BoatUS and the EPA have shown that anywhere between 5 to 20 percent of the contents of a portable or installed polyethylene tank can vanish during the course of a year, the result of breathing losses and permeation. The remaining fuel is lower in octane, contains fewer of the volatiles that are so essential for easy starting, and has reduced solvency for gum and varnish. It often looks perfectly good most of our samples did but is perfectly rotten and potentially harmful as fuel. There are several things you can do to ensure that fuel doesn t go bad over the off-season, or during periods of long-term storage: Reduce permeation. New EPA requirements for low permeation jerry cans, plastic tanks, and hoses are a blessing. The loss of vital volatile material is reduced and odors are reduced. However, our experience with the new jerry cans and portable tanks has been disappointing. Most of the designs we ve tried have serious flaws; we can only hope the market place will sort that out. Metal tanks have zero permeation. Store in a cool place. Keep jerry cans out of the sun whenever possible. Vent filters. The EPA mandated carbon filters on new boats and aftermarket silica gel filters reduce water absorption and reduce breathing losses. Over a typical 10-years life, these filters can pay for themselves in saved fuel alone (we checked the calculations depending on the boat you can expect to save 1-3 gallons per year), before factoring in reduced engine problems caused by corrosion and varnish and, for diesel fuel. Keep the tank full. A full tank does not breath, and fresh fuel renews the volatile content. Keep the vent closed when not in use (dinghy engines only). Water absorption and evaporation affect small tanks more quickly. Run the engine often. The silence of wind power is nice, but gas does not keep. Here is an easy method to determine if gasoline contains alcohol. 1. Find a tall skinny straight-sided clear bottle. If you can get a test tube like those used in a chemistry lab that s ideal. 2. Fill the bottom 15 to 20 percent of the bottle with clean water. 3. With the bottle exactly vertical place a strip of tape on the outside so the top edge of the tape precisely marks the top of the water. 4. Almost fill the bottle with gasoline and cap it. 5. Shake the bottle vigorously for about 30 seconds. 6. Hold the bottle vertical and wait a minute for the gasoline - water boundary to stabilize. 7. If the boundary line is higher than the previously marked top of the water then there was alcohol in the gas. The alcohol has been pulled out of the gas by combining with the water to increase the apparent volume of water.

7 page 7 ~~~ Winefest ~~~ At Two Harbors, the Catalina Isthmus. P/C Jan Freeman The Santa Catalina Island Company & the Avalon Rotary Club are pleased to announce the 15th annual Summer Wine Festival, a tasting extravaganza featuring the finest in local and imported wines! Taking place on the beach in beautiful Two Harbors, Catalina Island, on Saturday, June 4, 2016, the Summer Wine Festival has become one of Two Harbors most popular events. Complete with a silent auction, live music, complementary appetizers, and unlimited tastings of all of our participating wineries, this is an event you won t want to miss. There are usually a couple of breweries there too. Tickets are $45 per person, and go on sale May 1st. This event sells out, so advance purchase is strongly recommended. This cruise is one of Arrowhead s most fun cruises. You can bring your own boat or hop on the Catalina Express and come over for the day. Catalina Express has added an additional boat back to the mainland at 6:15 pm so you won t miss any of the fun. For those of you who want to bring your own boat, the Freemans will be hosting a mini-get together on board the Fan Sea Free on Friday evening. Granted, it won t be as grand as the one on shore and I m sorry to say there won t be a silent auction or live music but there will be food, libation, and most importantly, lots of camaraderie and lots of laughs. We hope you can join us. If you plan to join us, please let Jan Freeman know at Jansfreeman@verizon.net or at (909) To purchase tickets go to: Select Store on the upper right side of the page. I was told it would probably be on the 3rd page. Tickets do not go on sale until May 1 and they do sell out. The tickets will not be mailed to you, you can pick them up the day of the festival in front of Visitor Services. If you want to come over on the Catalina Express, go to their webpage to purchase tickets. Hope to see you there! new Arrowhead lifers (life members) at Fall Conference: Mike Mann, Ken Griffing, Ronnie Mann

8 In Memoriam LEE TRACY page 8 It is with much sadness that I am announcing the passing of Lee Tracy last Tuesday. Lee was Past Commander of Arrowhead and a Past District Commander for District 13 not to mention an avid supporter of all things Arrowhead. He was instrumental in designing and building our cardboard boat which Arrowhead captained in quite a few cardboard boat races. I spoke to Nan Tracy this morning. She said the family is planning an open house/remembrance at the ranch in Reche Canyon but have not determined a date. She will let us know when the date is set. Nan is doing well considering. She is blessed to have a very supportive family who are there with her. Please keep Nan and her family in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with this tremendous loss. Jan Freeman KAUHSULE is the name of the 11 foot cardboard boat Lee designed and helped build. The name is Navajo for AR- ROW. He drew the full size plans, 12 arrowhead members gathered in the plantation barn to laminate the 4 layer 9ft x 13 ft cardboard sheet. No screws or other metal fasteners were used - only glue. Lee also negotiated for cardboard sheets from a box factory in Redlands -no cost to the squadron. Cardboard boats usually last for 1 race. Kauhsule has done 4 and is ready to go again.
