United States Power Squadrons Ventura Sail and Power Squadron Volume 62 May 2018 Number 5 Santa Barbara and they will join us on Friday night for the opening event of our Fathers Day Cruise. Remember that part of our mission as the USPS is fraternity among our members. Cdr Steve Johnston, P Commander s Corner The April class of the ABC graduated and I had the privilege to congratulate them and talk briefly about the benefits of membership. Fraternity, education and advocating for boating access and safety are the three legs of our group - Americas Boating club! Hello everybody, It seems to be a recurring theme here as this article is being written aboard the Norwegian Cruise Line Sun. We are starting a 21 day cruise that takes us through the Panama Canal. It s probably on a lot of folks bucket list as it is on ours. We cast off in Seattle and make our way down the west coast, through the canal and end up in Florida. The start of our Power Squadron activities is upon us and I hope to see you all at the events that are planned throughout the summer. I have talked to the commander at May Birthdays Joanne Beatty 1-May Phil Reid 2-May Kathryn Elroy 3-May Shawn M. Hoff 6-May Sheilla Leiman 7-May Dennis A. Doman 9-May Darrell O'Connell 9-May Ronald Broschart 14-May Steven Nagelberg 14-May
Lt/C Debbie Braun-Lawson Squadron Education Officer We have now completed the ABC class for the spring. I am very proud that everyone in the class passed with flying colors. The Engine Maintenance Class took their test on April 17. We wish them all the best of luck as the tests have been submitted to National for grading. take Jan Lawson s class. Ongoing is the Junior Navigation class with David Williams at the helm. The tests for that class have been ordered so we look forward to having some new JNs. The exam for the lone Advanced Piloting student has also been ordered. Our thanks to Rick Metheny for tutoring student Ted Bowler through it! So far the classes for the fall are the ABC class starting on September 11 and Cruise Planning with Pat Metheny starting also in September; the date to be determined. There will not be any classes this summer as we hope you spend time out on the water enjoying your boats! Thanks go to Robyn Miller for starting the Engine Maintenance class until Alan Gosselin could resume teaching the class. This was the last time for Alan to teach the Engine Maintenance class and we thank him for all his years of service. The Seamanship class has just begun, and we have 14 students signed up to
We decided to name her La Mouette pronounced la-mwet ) the French equivalent of the British mew or sea-mew, a sailor s term for seagull. When she comes out of the yard, we ll move our stuff aboard and I ll sail our Hunter down to Long Beach, where our old friend Steve Curran can find new owners for her. Lt/C Dan Coverdale Executive Officer Up InThe Air Judy and I are now in the middle of our transition to our new-to-us boat. Two friends* helped me bring the 1988 Roughwater 42 up from San Pedro to Ventura Harbor Yacht Yard, where she now resides, waiting for new prop shafts and bottom paint. (*There were even more friends who volunteered to help. Thank you all I m very grateful to you.) Being a project guy, I naturally have all sorts of improvements in mind for La Mouette, but we re going to move aboard and sail the boat first, before we start making changes. This is the Dark Side after all, and we have a lot to learn. We have to let our experience with the boat lead us in however we modify her. In the excitement and anticipation of our new life aboard, it s still hard to think of parting with our old boat, Coyote. Whoever it was who made up that joke about the two happiest days, etc. I don t think he was a sailor.

ic topics to be offered. One idea being considered is a Sailing class. Admin Officer Lt/C Lorna Londborg Lorna discussed the upcoming events for May: The Safe Boating Expo and the Picnic at the end of the month. Reports of Officers: SEO Lt/C Debbie Braun-Lawson Debbie reported that exams for the spring classes will be starting within this week and next. The fall class lineup is being developed. ABC class will be offered in the fall. Debbie is looking for other ideas of classes to offer. Members are encouraged to make suggestions to her if you would like specif- The June Santa Barbara cruise won t be coordinated by Gary Bright this year, so Lorna will be the contact person. Carolyn Cahn has volunteered to collect the money necessary for this event. Robyn Miller has offered Mariposas the host boat again this year at Santa Barbara. Watch for flyers with more detailed information. Treasurer Lt/C Dan Cahn The Treasurer s Report was ed to Bridge members recently for review, who reported that the new format was easy to review yet provided enough detail to understand. Dan reported that VSPS broke even last year (2017). He s still learning the job, particularly regarding the role National plays in our organization. National gives 20% of the renewal dues back to VSPS. Our present balance is just under $17,000. Secretary Lt/C Chris Stine Chris reported there were no outstanding minutes requiring Executive Board approval, as the March 05, 2018 meeting was cancelled, due to illness and other unavoidable reasons. Executive Officer Lt/C Dan Coverdale May is the month for the Boating Safety Expo at Channel Islands Harbor. We will
have a booth again this year. Our biggest challenge is getting volunteers. We have four shifts of two hours each shift. We have an Easy-up shade cover and folks who have helped with staffing the booth have reported that they have enjoyed it very much lots of fun meeting the public and sharing tips and ideas on boating safety. Members are encouraged to volunteer to help with the booth, as Dan said The more, the merrier!! This is a fun and educational family oriented time to learn and teach about boating. Commander Steve Johnston Absent no report Ongoing Business/Activities/Classes See reports already discussed above. Completed Business/Activities/Classes None Future Business/Activities/Classes None Meeting adjourned at News from Nationall THE POWER OF ONE If everyone recruited just ONE person each year we would double in size in about a year. Sounds so simple but, it is difficult because many of us don t like to ASK someone to join us (it is selling). The worst they can do is say no. ASK a friend. ASK the person whose VSC you did. ASK the person who wonders about the insignia on your shirt or cap. ASK the person who took a class or seminar. Just ASK someone! Robert Howd Membership.
