She was built in 1933, and races with a crew of 26 sailors. The crew member shown, a jib sheet trimmer was constantly doused with warm ocean water, the photographer was holding on tightly with one hand while taking the photograph with the other. 2 page 2 Cdr Mark Gunn A view from the bridge OUR STATUS BE PROUD I had the opportunity to spend some time with a Coast Guard licenced Captain who has extensive experience in the waters of Puget Sound, Canada and Alaska, mostly on pleasure yachts owned by him or his family. I was very interested in speaking to him because I want to charter a trawler and cruise in Puget Sound and/or the San Juan Islands. I picked his brain on the sea conditions, weather, etc. He told me he sought the Coast Guard Captain s License because he was going to be cruising from Washington to Alaska and back in different boats and wanted the education. I was curious as to how our USPS education stacks up, so I asked a few questions about his education, trying not to make a quiz out of it. I must say that the impression I received was that our advanced grade courses go into much greater detail than the course work he encountered. I came away with the thought that I would defer to him in most practical situations in his native Pacific Northwest, however, I also came away with the impression that I would trust most any USPS Advanced Pilot, Jr. Navigator or Navigator to plot a course or fix a position. Our courses are top notch! SAFE BOATING WEEK: Our Chief Commander Frank A. Dvorak has reminded us that it is the official position of USPS to support efforts to mandate life jacket use in open boats under 26 feet and to support federally mandated education. Once again, USPS is in the lead. We are part of a proud and prestigious organization in the world of boating. After all, boating is fun, and we take the lead in showin em how! Mark Gunn, JN, Commander VSCs at LAKE SILVERWOOD Fellow Vessel Safety Examiners! Lake Silverwood is doing things a little different this season. They have a separate mussel inspection location - and they prefer we not set up shop there. They suggest we set up on the right side of the launch ramp with the lake s inspectors. Just check in at the Main Gate and proceed to the Launch Ramp. You must not park in the tow vehicle/trailer area! There are a few spots in the trailer area for single vehicles plus there is the Marina Store parking lot. At best it will be a 50 yard walk to the ramp. There are benches and some shade in the boat launch prep area. We can set up a 10 X10' canopy there if we wish. Lake personnel are GLAD to see us back again this season! 3 Along the Fo c stle of the good ship SEO Hal Gayer - - Good News: Advanced Piloting Class with Instructor P/C John Walker, SN has graduated four new Advanced Pilots. Bev Kelly, Robert Kelly and Arnold Rowe can now wear the AP insignia. Debbie Neal can as soon as she completes Seamanship. More Good News: The desert Piloting Class with Instructor P/C Rick Sherwood, JN is in testing. Class members are Wendy Sherwood, Becky Ray and Thomas Ray. I know they will do well. New Classes: Sail Class with Instructor Stf/C Jerry Ervin will start as soon as he gives a date. He has room for five students in this class. Class will be at the Ervin residence in Riverside. Call Jerry at (951) Anchoring Seminar by Instructor P/C John Walker, SN is in need of persons of interest in learning the proper techniques of anchoring. If you are interested call John at (909) ABC3 Class at Lake Perris on 11 June had to be rescheduled to 25 June The Lake Administration required the move. Class is still in Lot 9. page 3 Needs: A Seamanship Class. An Engine Maintenance Class. An Operations Training Class. I will need instructor volunteers and students. Let me know if you are available and when. Information: I went to Sun Country Marine in Ontario and met with the General Manager Jim Cabral. They are the local Branswick Dealer in our area. Their hours of operation do not lend to night classes for us but we may be able to conduct Seminars in the daytime on Saturdays. More to come later. Admin s Anchorage Soundings from AO Arnold Rowe Our speaker for the June meeting will be Richard Rodman M.A.Ed., Associate Professor, Automotive Technology, Riverside City College. Our daughter, Aimee, worked for Richard and has often spoken about the research Richard has conducted on various alternative fuels for motor vehicles. Richard will be speaking to us on the topic of great importance to all of us, namely the fuels (both gas and diesel) that we use every time we are out on the water. Be sure to attend and learn about the latest info on possible alternative fuels such as biodiesel and other potential sources of energy that may be useful and available to all of us in the near future. On a personal note, last week Phyllis & I bottled, corked, sealed and labeled (and continually tasted to ensure a high level of quality control!) our completely fermented California Sarah at the Winery at Canyon Crest. You ll recall our guest speaker and wine-tasting expert for April was Kevin Craig from the winery. So, to add to the excitement of our raffle this month we ll donate a bottle of this especially selected blend for you to enjoy so be sure to buy lots of raffle tickets! Even at this early stage of its life, the wine is really quite excellent. Arnold

4 page 4 XO Expoundings & Ramblings... L/Cdr Wendy Sherwood, S It is hard to believe that June is here already. Seems like Labor Day and the start of school was yesterday. I m excited to begin our cruising season. Hopefully the weather will be warmer this year at our favorite island - Catalina. We have several cruises planned, and we hope that we will have good participation in these fun events. As I write this, I am visiting my daughter and grandchildren in Sacramento. I can t wait to have them join in the boating experience - for several years we have had our granddaughter Cassidy for our dinghy captain, and I am looking forward to adding 8-year-old Alexandra to our crew. It occurs to me that boating is truly a family affair - and our squadron will be stronger the more we spread our love of the water and boating knowledge throughout our families. Let s get our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren out on the water and teach them safe boating. Maybe they will catch the bug and be the squadron leaders of tomorrow. That said, I want to thank Debbie Neal for volunteering to be the cruise master for our Catalina Harbor trip June It should be a fun weekend in a beautiful calm harbor. Please contact Debbie to book your passage. If you would like to take charge of the Little Harbor cruise in July, or the District 13 barbecue weekend cruise to the Isthmus, please let me know. Our vessel safety Examiners are hard at work. Pat Rogers has all the materials you need, and if you would like to become an Examiner, contact him for all the information. We have excellent classes and instructors, and I encourage each of you to sign up for a class - they are informative, fun, and help us all be safer on the water (not to mention the insurance discounts!) I look forward to seeing you at our June meeting - and on the water! Wendy Join me for a Gulf Island cruise I m planning a trip into the Gulf Island area of Canada next summer, leaving August 14th.
