2 page 2 Cdr Wendy Sherwood A view from the bridge At this writing we are putting the final touches on arrangements for our CELE- BRATE 50 dinner in honor of our own Lee Tracy s fifty years as a member of Arrowhead Squadron. The reservations are brisk, and we are looking forward to a great turnout. Look for photos and a recap in next month s Log. about your course requests. Summer is nearly over, and it is time for school to begin not only for the kids but also for our members. We are gearing up to begin our courses again. Please be sure to communicate with our Squadron Education Officer, Hal Gayer, September also means a return to our regular monthly Squadron meetings. Please get your reservations in for the September 12 meeting at the San Bernardino Elks. Our Administrative Officer Debbie Neal is providing excellent programs. The meetings are a good opportunity to re-connect and swap sea stories. Please think about the role you would like to fill in our Squadron next year it is just around the corner. As a volunteer organization, we only survive if our members participate. Please step forward and communicate with Mike Mann to let him know how you would like to be involved, and what activities you would like to have included in the calendar. September and October are some of the most beautiful boating months on our Southern California waters. So, WEIGH ANCHOR LET S GO BOATING! Gail Walker is at it AGAIN! A comedy in Redlands is scheduled for Sept 6-23 at Redlands Footlighters. Call for info re The Remarkable Mr Pennypacker. A cast of 9 children & 11 adults, set in 1890 s Delaware, deal with the very progressive Mr P. His large Delaware family discovers he has another family with 9 children in Philadelphia. More info next month re dates involving understudies in some roles. (not Gail - she s always on) We believe in safe boating - take an Arrowhead class
3 Along the Fo c stle of the good ship SEO Hal Gayer - - Greetings, Just a short note from education. page 3 An ABC3 class will be held at the Scuba Locker on Mondays at 7:00 pm to 9:00pm starting on 10 September and continuing for the next 4 Mondays. A Piloting class is being planned to start after the middle of September. There will be three students, Is anyone else interested? I wish to thank all the Squadron Members who sent get well messages after my hip replacement. They were well appreciated. I have one more week of physical therapy. See you on the water soon Hal The Sea Scouts just finished their second recruiting drive and now boast an increase in membership - both youth & adults. A 3rd one is set for September 26. Location TBD - probably in the Riverside area. They also plan to attend the Cardboard boat race - but will camp in the adjoining Boy Scout camp instead of the Regional Park. I have no update on whether they will enter a boat or not. Hopefully Kyle Gonering (Ship s Boatswain) will return from his Northern Tier canoeing adventure in time to send in an article. Northern Tier is a BSA national High Adventure Base that has canoe trips passing between Minnesota and the Provincial Parks of Canada. He & Paula Boothe joined one of the expeditions and are currrently out of contact. (Gee, no Internet connections in a canoe in the Canadian wilderness! Go figure.) 4 - -Admin s Anchorage Soundings AO Debbie Neal, AP page 4 If you have ever wondered what a trip through the Panama Canal would be like, you will soon have the opportunity to find out. But only if you attend the September 12th Arrowhead meeting. At our upcoming meeting, we will have the honor and privilege of having former Arrowhead USPS member, Wolfgang Kutter, speak to us about the Panama Canal. Wolfgang and his wife, Karin, took a 4400 nautical mile trip through the Panama Canal to Cartagene, Columbia. Their exciting 14 day adventure concluded in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Wolfgang will take you through the canal s history and will expound on new developments taking place there right now. Arrowhead members will have the opportunity to enjoy an 18 minute video of Wolfgang and Karin s transit through the Isthmus of Panama. I am certain that it will be a memorable evening. Wolfgang joined the Wilmington, Delaware USPS in 1978 where, in 1984, he assumed the position of Commander. In 1983, he became Senior Navigator. Many of you know that that is no small accomplishment. After Wolfgang s retirement from Du Pont Chemicals in 1992, he and Karin moved to the high desert and transferred to the Arrowhead USPS. During his stay with our Arrowhead group, he served on the Executive board and was very active in the Cooperative Charting Program. Wolfgang and Karin left Arrowhead USPS and joined the Balboa USPS when they moved to Orange County. Wolfgang continues to be active in the Cooperative Charting Program (9 times on the National Honor Role) and currently is serving on the Executive Board. Wolfgang first began boating on the Chesapeake Bay with his 28 foot cabin cruiser. After owning that boat for 8 years, he decided to switch to sailing. At that point in time, sailing became his passion. He sailed all over the Chesapeake Bay for many years. He even took some side trips to the Bahamas, British Virgin Islands, and Australia. Currently, Wolfgang is crew on Darrell s boat, Escapade. I would like to say that Wolfgang is an impressive navigator. If you are lucky, he might even be willing to give you some pointers on the use of a hand held GPS. You will not want to miss this informative presentation. Afterwards, Wolfgang will entertain any questions you might have. Come and help us welcome former member, Wolfgang Kutter, and his wife, Karin. This is a meeting you don t want to miss. Debbie - - -XO Expoundings & Ramblings L/Cdr Mike Mann, N On 4 August District 13 had the Ed Wylie memorial BBQ at the Isthmus of Catalina. I am sure that Arrowhead had the most members present. As usual we were in charge of serving. Rick and Jerry did an outstanding job of cooking the tri-tips. I have been going to this cruise for many years. I don t know what they did to the meat but it was the best I have had, juicy and tender. For you VSC s I have decals. Let me know what you need. To date 46 VSC s have been completed. I noted that 5 of the VSC examiners are short of the 5 needed. Up coming events: USPS Fall Governing Board meeting 3-8 September in Detroit. It s September and our regular meetings will resume with the next one on 12 September. District 13 Fall Conference October in Laughlin NV. Rooms are cheep. Food is reasonable. Gambling - well you decide!. Log bending 30 September hosted by the Freeberg s in Oak Glen. Fair winds and Following Seas Mike

6 page 6 The Saga of the Fan Sea Free Continues Our weekend at the Isthmus for the annual District 13 bar-b-que was a great weekend. I had taken Monday off so we could extend our enjoyment of being on the water in such a beautiful, peaceful location. On Sunday morning we watched all our friends pack up and head home, gloating a little that we were staying one more day. The day was quiet, the harbor fairly empty and we enjoyed the coolness of the breeze mixed with the sun in the afternoon. Monday morning dawned bright and sunny. Why is it that the weather is always beautiful on the day you have to leave? We secured the dinghy on the bow, and got ready to depart for home. The sea was flat with barely a trace of a breeze and the sun was shining brightly. The trip was uneventful and we were cruising along at about 29 knots when we found ourselves approaching a dense fog bank. We were about 5 miles from the entrance to Angel s Gate and just as Barry started to slow down Out in the water there arose such a clatter, my heart jumped into my throat and the fog didn t matter. The clanking and noise of metal hitting metal was quite frightful. At first we thought we may have hit something in the water and then it dawned on us that the starboard engine was making that horrible clanking. Barry turned off the engine and we quickly cleared the cockpit and opened the engine cover. Once I realized we weren t taking on water my heartbeat slowed a little and I was able to breathe. When he tried to restart the engine, the noise was horrendous. The fog had closed in around us and we couldn t see more than 1/8th of a mile in any direction. Barry put the port engine in gear and we began traveling towards Angel s Gate at about 5 knots, sailboat speed! I had the horn out and was blowing a signal every two minutes. We already had our life vests on, we never make the crossing without wearing them. It was a little eerie traveling so slowly and not being able to see. When we reached the 3 mile mark I called Vessel Assist to alert them that we were coming in on one engine and would need help. The power steering in the boat is tied to the starboard engine so no power, no power steering. Captain Ken had side tied us by then and took us right up to the dock and we were able to thank him and send him on his way. I went to get the truck and trailer to de-launch the boat and everything was going quite smoothly. Until.I backed the trailer into the water and we were able to pull the boat up onto the trailer. Barry always uses the engines to get the boat up on the last foot of the trailer. As the boat pulled all the way up into the trailer, the bow support broke. The weld just gave. There was no way to secure the boat onto the trailer. Barry got out a couple of dock lines and tied them to the boat and the trailer. Of course I had visions of the boat sliding off the trailer when I pulled it up that steep ramp. (I wonder where that vision came from?) Well, the boat stayed on the trailer and truck, boat and trailer made the trip home to Chino just fine. And you all thought I had white hair because of my 10 grandchildren. No my hair is white because I have a boat! Getting through Angel s Gate was, again, a little scary. Luckily other ships were using their horns but I had visions of a huge tanker looming out of the fog heading right for us and us having no power and no steerage. Finally, after another call to Vessel Assist to tell them we were at Angel s Gate not Queen s Gate, Captain Ken headed our way and took us under tow. The fog refused to lift and visibility was next to zero. At one point a small Coast Guard boat came up behind us and followed us for about 20 minutes. As we got closer to the Queen Mary the fog began to lessen slightly and by the time we got to the launch ramp, it was clear.
7 Another Saga - on the way to the Annual BBQ page 7 It was a beautiful Friday morning, the sun shining brightly, but zero wind in the slip. So that would mean motorsailing til the wind began it s usual midmorning startup in mid channel. Everything was on board, with sufficient ice onboard to keep the bountiful supply of food ready for the 3 days at Catalina s isthmus. After an early breakfast, Escapade cast off around 0800 hoping to join the USPS group already there. As usual we had stayed up til midnight Thursday evening, since weekend mooring reservations at the isthmus cannot be made until 12:01 am Friday morning, or after. We found that the only available mooring was at Cherry Cove a short dink ride from the Isthmus. That was disconcerting as we would be a distance from many of the USPS boats who had arrived midweek and had isthmus moorings. As we idled out the fairway we waved to Purrseverance (Phil & Judie Dee) anticipating a nice relaxing sail to the isthmus. Leaving the Los Alamitos entrance astern the engine rpm was increased to give us 6.2 knots SOG, and the autopilot was doing the steering for us. And then about a mile outside the Los Al entrance there was suddenly a loud clanking sound. It seemed to be coming from the stern, but my first concern was water did we have a leak!!! Quickly tossing things from the seat hatch to gain access to the engine bilge and stuffing box whew no sea water coming in! The prop shaft turned by hand ok, the transmission was shifting ok, so we limped back to the slip at idle speed. That minimized the clanking sound but what a long long mile plus back to the slip. Both the anchor and jib sheet lines were at the ready for instant use, fortunately neither was needed. A diver was called and he verified that the cutlass bearing was way loose, so as the prop turned that looseness allowed the shaft to bang around inside the Bronze strut bearing housing. The real question was this; did that looseness bend the prop shaft? We knew that getting to the isthmus was out of the question. Then the thought struck that we had part of the BBQ food and the big coffee pot onboard that HAD to get to the isthmus. Fortunately Purrseverance hadn t left their slip, so we gave them the supplies that were on board Escapade. That was a relief! Then it was time to make arrangements to haul the boat for the cutlass bearing repair. My plan was to haul this coming fall for a new bottom paint job, so it made sense to do both since the haul was necessary for the bearing replacement. Of course the yard had to drop the rudder out of the way to be able to pull the shaft, to make the bearing repair. The lower bearing on the rudder also had a lot of play, a Teflon shim fixed that. The yard was really crowded, with 5 boats waiting to be hauled. Long story short two weeks later everything was fixed and she was splashed on Saturday the day before we were to leave for San Francisco and a visit to our 8 month old grandson. Part of the time in the shipyard was due to the additional repairs done. The master battery switch handle broke off while up on the hard. Since the battery switch was original (1980 I think), it couldn t be replaced. So another location was found for the currently available switch. Of course that meant some cutting of bulkhead half inch plywood about 7 hours labor there. Then also some relamination of plywood around fixed ports was done plus rebedding the ports. The bearing failure had sent in motion a chain of work that took lots more time than a simple bottom job. Did I mention the large number of bottom blisters that had to be ground out, filled, and faired all prior to the bottom paint??? So she s back in the water after a frustrating 2 weeks, ready for the SoCal Ta Ta rally coming up September 9th to 16th. 8 page 8 Safety on the water Safety Officer, Arnold Rowe, AP WHAT S WRONG, WHAT S RIGHT WITH THIS PICTURE? First, thanks to all who read and responded to last month s What s Wrong With This Picture? question. The first person who correctly diagnosed the situation was Arrowhead s own Sailing Instructor, Jerry Ervin. Jerry correctly pointed out that the gentleman holding down the boom in light winds should actually be allowing the boom to raise a bit to act more like a parachute so as to capture more of the wind. Also Jerry pointed out that none of the three sailors was wearing life jackets. Secondly, continuing along in the theme of carefully observing boating situations, here is another interesting photo quiz for this month. Consider the interesting juxtaposition of two owner-installed items in the picture below aboard a Catalina 25 sailboat. As a USPS captain who has taken many of our boating classes, what comments do you have to make about this situation? your Safety Officer (arowe@dslextreme.com) with your astute observations and I ll post the results in next month s column. Northern Tier Leave No Trace training for C.I.E.C Sea Scouters Three Sea Scouters from Ship 195 attended the recent Leave No Trace Master Educator training at the Northern Tier high adventure base in Ely Minnesota. Two of the Sea Scouters, Kyle Gonering and Elliott Brooks, attended the course. The third Sea Scouter, Paula Boothe, is C.I.E.C s Outdoor Ethics Advocate and was the lead instructor for the course. The training took place at Northern Tier and was also attended by three members of Northern Tier s staff and a scouter from the Northern Star Council in Minnesota. Northern Tier s lead interpreter, Laura Gehrke, was the co-instructor for the training. Included in the training was two days of classroom lessons on the principles of Leave No Trace and a four day 35 mile trek in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of the Superior National Forest. During the trek, each participant led a 20 minute lesson on one of the seven Leave No Trace principles and were evaluated on their effectiveness. The entire trek adhered to Leave No Trace practices and teachable moments were used throughout the training. Having four members of the Northern Tier staff on the trek provided insight into the operations of one of BSA s three High Adventure bases. Kyle Gonering opened the student lessons with a presentation on How to Dispose of Waste Properly. He used examples of WAGBAGS, RESTSTOPS, and proper cat-hole construction. Elliott Brooks led a field exercise on Leave What You Find utilizing alternate methods of memorializing artifacts. Through the use of maps, drawings, photographs, and geocacheing, he expressed the alternatives to damaging or removing artifacts from cultural resource sites. BSA has a partnership with Leave No Trace and provides Master Educator courses at various locations including Philmont Scout Reservation and Northern Tier. P/SEO Paula Booth
