Secretary ABOUT OUR RACE The General Clinton Canoe Regatta with its great 70-mile Endurance Race is now in its ninth year. The endurance race, the longest and richest of its kind, last year drew entries from 8 states and Canada. The Regatta is held each Memorial Day with the race course following the course of General Clinton's famous route down the Susquehanna River. In addition to a full slate of races during the day the Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce provides a big day at the finish I ine where there are water front activities, an old fashioned chicken barbecue and plenty of carnival activities for young and old. The race is given complete coverage by radio station WDOS of Oneonta, N.Y. and the Sidney and Oneonta Amateur Radio Clubs provide finish line officials and spectators with up to the minute results of all canoes on the river and at the various check points. The Village of Bainbridge hopes you will come and spend a day with us on one of our nation's greatest natural resources. We urge all contestants, especially in the Endurance Race, to solicit sponsors to advertise on their canoes and help defray expenses. There will be no additional-charge for this and it will increase race interest. RACE INFORMATION ENDURANCE RACE - Open Division - Entry fee $10 per canoe. Race starts at 8:00 a.m. sharp Monday, May 31st from Council Rock, Cooperstown, N.Y. Rule 3A applies for this class only. All other rules must be followed. Everyone finishing the race will be awarded finishers patch. All entrants will receive free chicken barbecue. Amateur Division - Entry fee $10 per canoe. Race starts at 7 :00 a.m. sharp Monday, May 31st from Council Rock, Cooperstown, N.Y. Rule 3C applies to this class. All other rules must be followed. There will be no cash prizes for this race. Large first, second and third place trophies will be awarded. All finishers receive a trophy and finishers patch. All entrants will receive chicken barbecue. Stock Division A (aluminum class) - This division of the amateur class will be for all aluminum canoes only. Trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places will given. Please signify on your entry blank your choice of division. Rule 38 applies to this class. GRAND PRIX RELAY RACE - Entry fee $10 per canoe. Race starts at 12:00 noon Monday, May 31st at the Route 23 Bridge in Oneonta where the first 2 members of the team sprint approximately 100 yards to the canoes on the river bank and paddle to Otego Bridge. Here they will change with the second 2 members of the team and they will paddle to the bridge at Wells Bridge. The third 2 men of the team will paddle as far as the upper bridge in Unadilla (junction of Routes 7 and 78) where they will be relieved by the fourth 2 members of the team that will paddle to the river bridge in Sidney and will change with the last 2 members of the team who will take the canoe to the finish line in Bainbridge. It is a team race with 10 team members and one canoe. Prizes will be for 10 man Trophy Race - 1st or 2nd place trophy for each team member. 10 Women Trophy Race - 10 first place trophies only. YOUTH RACE - Entry fee $2 per canoe. Race starts at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 30th at Hotaling's Flat in Sidney, New York and is sponsored by the Sidney Chamber of Commerce. There will be 6 classes with first and second place trophies in each class. Classes are ages (not yet 18 years old), boys only, girls only and mixed ages under 14, boys only, girls only and mixed. Rule 38 applies for this race. MUST DESIGNATE AGE & CLASS ON ENTRY BLANK. OPEN SPRINT RACES - Entry fee $4 per canoe. Starts at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, May 30th at Unadilla, N.Y. There will be 3 classes: all man team, all woman team and mixed team. First and second place trophies in each division. Rule 38 applies to this race. MUST DESIGNATE CLASS ON ENTRY BLANK. ONE MAN CANOE RACE - Entry fee $5.00 per canoe. Race starts at 11 :00 a.m. Monday, May 31st from a point near River in Otego, to finish in Bainbridge. Prizes - Trophies - 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Rule 38 applies to this race - with the exception of the use of two bladed paddle.

4 OFFICIAL RACE RULES 1. Only standard tandem canoes, single blade paddles permitted any length but not over 12 inches wide. If one person drops out, team is disqualified. Extra paddles are allowed. Two persons per canoe. 2. Canoes may be canvas, aluminum, fiberglass, wood or rubber. 3A. Applies to Open Division, Endurance Race, only. No Kayaks or olympic type racing craft will be permitted. Canoes must not be over 18% feet or under 13 feet in length and not less than a 32 inch beam. Canoes shall not be less than 27 inches wide at a point 3 inches from the bottom at the outside of the middle of the hull. Depth must not be less than 9 inches at the center of the canoe. There are no weight limits. Water pumps will be allowed in open class for the purpoase of eliminating water from the canoe. 38. Only Tandem, family-type canoes shall be used. Canoes shall be.14375' x length which shall equal the minimum width 4" above the keel at the canoe's maximum width. Canoes must not be over 18% feet in length or under 13 feet and riot less than 34 inches outside beam, Center depth shall not be less than 12 inches. No manufactured canoe shall be altered in any way to meet specifications. Decision of the judges shall prevail on all questionable canoes. Water pumps not allowed in stock races. 3C. This rule applies only to Endurance race, Amateur Division, Amateur Division (A) Aluminum Class shall use rule 38. These are United States Canoe Association rules. The maximum length shall not exceed 18 feet 6 inches. The minimum width at the four-inch waterline (draft, depth or dead rise) shall not be less than times the length of the canoe ( 14-3/8%), and shall be located within one foot of the center of the overall length. The transverse section of the canoe, at the location of measurement of the four-inch waterline, shall form a continuous curve of convex shape - without concave or ogee curves. If of Vee-Bottom or chine construction the canoe shall contain convex lines of straight lines with obtruse angles. Gunwales, sponsors, keels or bilge keels shall not be included in any measurements. whether added to or built into the hull. The minimum bow and stern heights shall be 15% inches as measured above the bottom amidships. The minimum depth amidships shall be 11% inches. The canoe may be constructed of any material or by any method, but the material or added flotation shall provide at least 25 pounds of buoyancy with the canoe swamped and awash. Most conventional cruising canoes meet these specifications. 4. No extra devices nor assistance of any nature from any source will be permitted. 5. All canoes shall carry, or occupants shall wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved lifesaving device in accordance with the New York State laws. 6. Can?es must remain in the river at all times except where necessary for log Jams, dams or bridges. You are required to return to the water immediately after clearing the obstacle. Overland portages are NOT ALLOWED. 7. Winner is first canoe to cross finish line at Bainbridge, N.Y. Individuals may enter only one race. 8. Entrants release the Chamber of Commerce of Bainbridge and their representatives from all liability. 9. All questions, whether under these rules or otherwise, will be referred to the Rules Committee and their decision will be final. 10. Application must be accompanied by entry fee. Deadline of entry is May 24, 1971, late entries will be charged additional $5.00. No entries will be accepted on morning of race. 11. Commonly accepted rules of sportsmanship will be followed at all times. 12. Chamber of Commerce will cease communications system and judging and will not take responsibility for any contestants who have not completed race by 8:00 p.m. 13. Each canoe will have a number (provided by the Regatta Committee on the morning of the race) taped on both sides of the front of the canoe, and plainly visible when canoe is in water. 14. Rules apply for all races. 15. All contestants who leave the race must report to officials at the nearest check point. 16.
