SIXTH FORM PAGE NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY - STRESS AND REVISION Katie, from Northumbria University, came to look at stress and explained that some stress is good for us and but the key to managing stress is prioritising, time management, making sure you eat well, exercise and having enough sleep. She also explained that stress is quite natural. Katie also went through revision techniques, how to write notes, Cornell method and the use of the Pomondoro technique of revision when you have a chunk of information to learn. Feedback from the students was that the information was useful. Please try to make use of the information that she shared as we approach the GCSE re sit exams first week back and also the next assessment point 2 the week beginning the 12th November. 5
HOLOCAU ST SURVIVOR IBY KNILL WITH JOURNALIST FRANK GARDENER VISIT TO WETHERBY The Upper school were privileged to witness the moving story of Iby Knill and her vivid recollections, as a survivor, of Nazi occupied Europe. Iby s story involved the description of her childhood broken by war. Her life during this period involved many months of hiding, labour in work camps and infamously imprisonment in Auschwitz. Her account developed our understanding of the tribulations faced by the many millions who endured this terrible event in history. Iby s story took us though her personal experience and as such made our knowledge of the Holocaust more immediate. Most importantly it also allowed us to remember and recognise the enormity of so much loss of life. The experience was moving and a memorable moment in my school life. It brought to life the reality of what we had studied in our History lesson and was a sobering reminder of what can happen when evil takes hold in society. 6 AT A G LA NC E / T HE COAC HING C HR O NIC LE / I S S UE 1 0 6
The first term of the Young Enterprise Challenge has already been and gone which has meant the team have had to step up their preparations to create their own business. In order to raise money to develop a YOUN G E N T E R PR I S E C H AL L E N GE T E AM prototype of their product, the team tirelessly baked Halloween themed treats over the weekend to sell in school in the run up to half-term. A grand total of 126 was raised and this has now been put into the business s own HSBC account and it will be put towards funding the production and the packaging of their product. The product is yet to be fully finished and then we will reveal what the team will be creating so listen out and watch this space for these budding entrepreneurs! Miss Jennings FLP MU SICA L T H E AT R E This year we launched a new FLP club - MUSICAL THEATRE, in which students can work on songs and dance pieces from musical shows. This term these 9 students have been working on a dance from The Greatest Showman. They have worked together to create and rehearse an exciting modern piece of dance. The contemporary dance included unison, canon and level changes. They have dedicated themselves to choreographing a brilliant piece to This is me by Keala Settle. Well done ladies! MUSICAL THEATRE club runs on Tuesday lunch times in the Theatre, all new members welcome. 7 AT A G LA NC E / T HE COAC HING C HR O NIC LE / I S S UE 1 0 6
COACHING PAGE UK PARLIAMENT WEEK UK Parliament Week is an annual activity which takes place from November 12th-18th each year. During the week organisations across the UK run events and activities, aiming to engage people from across the UK with Parliament, by exploring what it means to them and empowering them to get involved is a special year for UK parliament week as it marks 100 years since the UK parliament passed a law which allowed the first woman, and all men to vote in elections for the first time: the Representation of the People Act However, it wasn t until a full ten years later, in 1928 that women and men over the age of 21 were given the right to vote on an equal basis, thanks to the Equal Franchise Act. During assemblies and coaching over the next two weeks you will be exploring the impact of the UK s parliament on you, your community and your school life. REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY POPPIES AND WHY THE ACT OF REMEMBRANCE MATTERS Every year in November, the nation marks the wars that have scarred our past and the bravery of the men and women who fought them. Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday is a chance to remember not just those who fought, but what they fought for. ORIGINS OF ARMISTICE DAY Armistice Day, held on November 11 every year, commemorates the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany at 11am on 11 November the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Although hostilities continued in some areas, the armistice essentially brought an end to fours years of fighting in the First World War. In Britain, it is tradition to pause for a two minute silence at 11am on November 11 to remember those killed in the two world wars and the British servicemen killed or injured since The armistice was signed in Ferdinand Foch's railway carriage in the remote Forest of Compiègne, north of Paris, at 5am on 11 November 1918, and came into force at six hours later, at 11am. (Incidentally, in 1940 Hitler forced the French to sign an armistice on German terms in the same railway carriage.) French military commander Foch was in charge of leading the negotiations and signing the agreement which made it impossible for the German army to recommence fighting. The Treaty of Versailles signed six months later acted as the lasting peace treaty between the nations. The armistice forced the Germans to evacuate invaded countries and territories within two weeks. They also had to surrender a significant amount of war material, including five thousand guns, 25,000 machine guns, 1,700 planes. Germany, exhausted by war and with a nation of hungry citizens, reluctantly accepted the terms. continued on next page 8
THE MAIN COMMEMORATIVE EVENTS Armistice Day is also called Remembrance Day and they both refer to November 11. This year Armistice Day falls on a Saturday. It's not to be confused with Remembrance Sunday which always falls on the second Sunday in November. This year it's a day later, on November 12. Schools, offices and churches up and down the country usually take part in a two-minute silence at 11am and hold services at war memorials on either or both days. November 11 is also marked around the world. After the Second World War, many countries changed the name of the day from Armistice Day to Remembrance Day, while the US chose to call it Veterans Day and made the day a federal holiday. TWO MINUTES OF SILENCE The first Remembrance Day in Britain and the Commonwealth was held in However, Australian journalist Edward George Honey is originally thought to have proposed the idea of a two-minute silence in a letter published in the London Evening News in May King George V later issued a proclamation calling for a two minute silence, it said: "All locomotion should cease, so that, in perfect stillness, the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead." The Royal British Legion says of remembrance: Great Britain still believes strongly in remembering those who fought not only in World Wars, but the more than 12,000 British Servicemen and women killed or injured since "The Royal British Legion supports silences observed during both Remembrance Sunday services and on 11 November, Armistice Day, itself. The act of Remembrance rightly has a place in - and impact on - our lives, no matter which day of the week it might fall upon." WHY WE WEAR POPPIES In the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, Canadian doctor Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields to write the now famous poem In Flanders Fields. His poem moved American teacher Moina Michael who began making and selling silk poppies to friends to raise money for the ex-service community. Before long, poppies made their way to the UK and became the symbol of the Royal British Legion when it was formed in The first ever 'Poppy Appeal' in the UK that year raised over 106,000 for war veterans. The following year, a poppy factory was set up by Major George Howson MC, giving jobs to disabled former servicemen. The bright red poppy is regarded as a resilient flower which managed to flourish despite fields being destroyed by war. POPPY POEM IN FLANDERS FIELDS by John McCrae, May 1915 In Flanders' fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders' fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high, If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders' Fields. WHICH SIDE SHOULD YOU WEAR IT ON? Some people say left, so it is worn over the heart. The left is also where military medals are worn. Others say only the Queen and Royal Family are allowed to wear a poppy on the right, which is an urban myth. But a Royal British Legion spokesman said there is no right or wrong side, "other than to wear it with pride". The poppies are made at the Poppy Factory in Richmond, Surrey where 30 workers (70 per cent of the workforce) are disabled or suffer from chronic illness. The public usually buy nearly 45 million poppies each year. In 2016, more than 11 million of those were produced at the Poppy Factory (along with 135,000 wreaths) and the rest were produced on machines at the Poppy Appeal s HQ in Kent. In 2014, the Poppy Appeal raised a record 44m for the Royal British Legion. 9

Source: BBC WHO NEEDS ARTISTS? Portrait painted (and signed) by artificial intelligence goes up for auction at Christie's in New York and could fetch $10,000 A painting created by a computer algorithm will be sold at Christie's in New York. The artwork is a portrait of a fictional character called Edmond Belamy. It is is one of a group of portraits created by a Paris-based trio of 25-year-olds. They fed the AI 15,000 portraits painted between the 14th and 15th centuries. Christie's, the auction house that has sold paintings by Picasso and Monet at record prices, is now poised to set another milestone with the first-ever auction of art created by artificial intelligence. The AI-generated 'Portrait of Edmond Belamy' depicts a slightly blurry chubby man in a dark frock-coat and white collar. His off-centre position leaves enough white space to show the artist's signature as 'min max Ex[log(D(x))] + Ez[log(1- D(G(z)))]. The painting - which will go under the hammer in New York - is expected to fetch as much as $10,000 ( 7,700). The artwork is one of a group of portraits of the fictional Belamy family created by a Paris-based trio of 25-year-olds. A painting created by an algorithm will be sold at Christie's in New York, marking the first time ever that a work of art by an artificial intelligence has been auctioned. Pictured is the artwork, which is titled the Portrait of Edmond Belamy. 'It may not have been painted by a man in a powdered wig, but it is exactly the kind of artwork we have been selling for 250 years,' said Christie's sale organiser Richard Lloyd in a statement. Questions How do you feel about a computer being able to paint pictures? What impact do you think A1 will have in society? Do you think Ai will get more sophisticated? 13
