2 THE SCHOOL Training healthy dancers...mind and body The Syracuse School of Dance, under the direction of Mary Pat Speno, offers quality training in Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Modern, Tap, Hip-Hop, and Musical Theatre to children, teens and adults of all ages and skill levels. The philosophy at SSD is that one can train a dancer, mind and body...that people thrive in positive and nurturing environments. The teachers are experienced professionals possessing the unique ability of bringing out creative selfawareness in their students through personal attention in a relaxing, non-competitive atmosphere. Students at the School start with Creative Movement classes and progress to concentrated training in the other dance forms. Adult classes offer an appreciation of dance and an opportunity to maintain a flexible, strong and expressive body. Classes are diversified, challenging and designed to develop coordination, muscular strength, correct posture and flexibility in conjunction with technical skills and a sensitive awareness for creative bodily expression THE COMPANY The Syracuse Contemporary Dance Company (SCDC) was formed in 1972 and is currently under the direction of Mary Pat. The Company presents original choreography while providing technically advanced dancers an opportunity to perform in a professional setting. THE CURRICULUM PRE BALLET/ CREATIVE MOVEMENT Introduces children 4 to 5 years of age to basic Ballet concepts; gentle stretching, and locomotor movements. Students discover how their bodies can move; create their own dances, and learn to respond to music and rhythm. BALLET The foundation for all other dance forms offers disciplined training in classical ballet style, technique and vocabulary with emphasis on correct body alignment and proper use of weight-bearing muscles and joints. POINTE The highest extension of Ballet Style. It is offered to qualified students as determined by the instructor. JAZZ The Giordano technique, with emphasis on rhythm, coordination, fast movement, composition, strength and style. MODERN An asymmetrical form of Ballet which stresses the torso as the source of movement with emphasis on creative improvisations, locomotor movement and imaginative exploration of the body in space. MUSICAL THEATER/TAP Musical Theater is the incorporation and integration of various dance genres, especially tap, jazz and modern, into a performance-quality art form. Students develop their abilities in these genres of dance, while at the same time learning to act and perform while dancing.. Movement that has elements of poppin, lockin and breakin. As well as freestyle movement to give students the opportunity to develop their own sense of style.

3 MARY PAT SPENO, Owner & Artistic Director A popular, talented and energetic teacher, Mary Pat has taught at the SSD since its conception. She performed in musicals for Salt City Playhouse and Syracuse Musical Theatre and choreographed for the Festival of Nations, Jamesville-Dewitt Schools, was the creator and director of the Dance Workshop Ensemble; and participated in the Baldwinsville s Arts in School program. Mary Pat also choreographs for ice skaters and has been part of the Litz Team Skating Seminars in Lake Placid. A long-time student of Lorraine Havercroft and Gus Giordano (Chicago), Mary Pat has also studied at Le Ballet Jazz, Montreal, and Alvin Ailey, New York City. She will teach Jazz and Ballet, and serve as Artistic Director of the Syracuse Contemporary Dance Company. LOUISE BOVA Louise has taught at the Syracuse School of Dance for many years and is a member of the SCDC. She also studied Ballet and Jazz at the NYS Ballet Association where she studied Ballet with Trinette Singleton (Joffrey Ballet), Glenn Gilmour (National Ballet of Canada), and Jazz with Eva Von- Gencsy (Les Grandes Ballets Canadiens). LAURIE DEYO Laurie has taught, choreographed and performed with SCDC since She was dance faculty for Syracuse University and has a Master s degree in Dance and Dance Education from NYU where she studied Limon, Graham and Cunningham techniques. Laurie will also serve as the new office manager for SSD. HELEN MOORE Along with having her masters' degree in education from Syracuse University, Helen has studied dance on Long Island at the LeRoy School of Dance and with Muriel Daks. She has also studied at Ballet Arts, New York School of Dance and Steps in Manhattan. She continues a long affiliation with SSD. THE FACULTY WHITNEY MILLER Whitney has been dancing for over 20 years and teaching for 10. She earned a BA at SUNY Geneseo and an MS in Education at the College of St. Rose. In both locations she taught, choreographed and performed with the Orchesis, Geneseo Dance Ensemble, the Young Actors Guild, Maud Baum & Company and the eba Center for Dance. BARBARA LA NEVE Barbara has studied ballet, musical theater, jazz, modern, and tap locally and with Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, Rennie Harris and Garth Fagen. She received her degree in Exercise Science and Dance at Syracuse University and has a New York State Teaching Certificate in Dance Education. BRANDON JONES Brandon has been dancing and studying Hip Hop, Musical Theater and Jazz for the past 11 years. He has choreographed and taught for the Ballet and Dance Center, Dance Theater of Syracuse, Dominique s Dance Creations, Say Yes to Education, Peaceful Resolution and Lemoyne Upward Bound Summer program. ERIKA LINDBLOM-BENNETT Erika studied at the Draper Center for Dance in Rochester and was a principal dancer at Western New York Ballet. She has taught ballet, pointe, jazz, and tap. She was the Assistant Artistic Director at the Western New York Ballet & Odasz Dance Theatre where she crafted dance training programs and choreographed for the company. As the Artistic Director of the Queen City Youth Ballet & School of Dance she choreographed and implemented a technique based curriculum, including the professional ballet training program..

4 POLICIES CLASS PLACEMENT For new students only: On Wednesday, September 7th at 7pm, a Ballet placement class will be conducted, Adult Division and students under the age of 8 need not attend. Please call the school in advance to reserve a place in this class. REFUNDS For medical reasons ONLY; must have written verification from doctor within 2 weeks of injury. SNOW DAY POLICY The decision for class cancellation will be made by 2p.m. (if possible) and listed on all major television stations. When in doubt call the school s office. Please do not call your teacher. CREDITS AND MAKE-UP CLASSES Credits can be used only by the enrolled student and only in the form of make-up classes. Make-up classes cannot be carried into the summer session or be used for tuition credit. CLASS CARDS 10 classes for $ CANCELLATION OF CLASSES The school reserves the right to cancel a class at any time if enrollment falls below 5 students. Currently enrolled students will be placed in a new class or given a refund for the remaining classes. CLASS ATTIRE BALLET Children, Junior and Senior Divisions Females; All students in these divisions must wear pink tights and pink ballet shoes. Leotards for each class are: Creative Movement Pink (Simple leotards please; no attached skirts, appliqués, etc.) Ballet I White; Ballet II Light Blue; Ballet III Royal Blue; Ballet IV Red; Ballet V, VI and Children s Beginning Ballet Black Intermediate through Advanced Ballet classes Black Boys; Any color leotard or t-shirt, gym shorts, black jazz pants or black tights, white ballet shoes. Adults; Females: Any solid color leotard, pink tights, pink ballet shoes. Males: Any color leotard or t-shirt, black tights or black jazz pants, white socks, white ballet shoes. JAZZ & MODERN Females and males: Any solid color leotard and stirrups, footless tights or black jazz pants. Jazz 1 and 2 - bare feet Jazz 3 and up - tan jazz shoes* * Jazz sneakers must be approved by instructor. Appropriate dance attire. Instructor will discuss specifies at first class. Jazz sneakers required for Hip Hop. TAP Beginning Tap students do not buy tap shoes before the first class TUITION You will be registering for the entire year. Tuition may be paid in full at registration with a 10% discount, or the payment schedule below may be followed. This will reserve your place in class for the entire year.
