7 SYRIAN SHRINE UNITS Antique Caravan As we start a new year, and 2015 comes to a close, we reminisce about all the incredible things The Antique Caravan accomplished throughout the past year. We are grateful for each and every one of you for your year-round commitment to The Antique Caravan and Syrian Shrine, and for continuing to make our Unit and Shrine Center such a big part of your life. Our 1 st 2016 parade is this month, and we look forward to having 13 cars on the street Gary Well it is hard to believe it is 2016 already just whizzed by. We have a Circus and Conventions coming up. In case you have been living under a rock our circus is the last week end in February. Congratulations to our new Potentate Art Weingartner and his Divan and Trustees. Congratulations Particularly goes to our own New Trustee Hillbilly Jack Ramsey who is also recovering very bravely from Cancer. Also Congratulations goes to our now Past Pote David Reese for a fine year. The annual ISCA, International Shrine Clown Association, Convention is in Sioux City Iowa February Please let Barrels and I know if you are interested in Going Hotel Rooms are about $90 a night. Registration is $150 per Clown. If that one is too much and too far please attend the GLSCUA convention in Dayton April 7-9.Our Director is 1 st Vice president.our unit will be hosting next year. Let s support the Antioch Funsters, Our Director and President Ed Peters by competing and participating in force! It will be held in Downtown Dayton at the Crowne Plaza. Please check your Clown Chatter for details. Keep this thought during the Circus, What is the gooey red stuff between an elephant s toes? Slow clowns. If you see a child with no smile, give them yours Andy Chillie Mellman Director s Staff Cool February is here!! Buck our Director, is currently sunning in Florida while Mr. John Miller is trying to keep the staff under control Look for the Director Staff at the Circus again this year on February 26th, 27th and the 28th selling peanuts and activity books. Directors are ready to hit the year with many Parades, our early picnic and the monthly fellowship business meeting as well as our nice Christmas party. Upcoming meetings will take place at numerous restaurants to be announced by our director Buck. Directors Stall annual Convention: 2016 Melha Shriners Springfield, MA April Director s Staff history: It doesn t matter how many times we ve done it, the Nobility loves us. Instituted in 1886, this Unit organizes the stunts and goodnatured fun which highlight the initiation of candidates. This unit is the one that organized the many stunts which highlights the initiation of candidates. Our unit meets monthly for planning programs and social times. Unit members include many talented backgrounds all of whom contribute their know how to provide ceremonial entertainment The Syrian Director s Staff currently has 22 members, totaling years of Shrine service. Still counting Your brother in the Shrine Flying Fez Our second month brings back the exiting moments of our officer installations January the second, starting as early as 1:00 PM we had two Shriner limousines, a Ford One Ton Van driven by yours truly and a GMC driven by Del Tope, picking up our Ladies and Nobles bringing them to the Masonic center on 5 TH Street. The first main event took place that day starting at 3 PM. Our new officers for the year 2016 took place on this day where our new Ill.Potentate Art Weingarten, were sworn in to serve Syrian Shrine. Later that evening, after a great dinner, our Unit Directors were sworn in. May God s Speed be with our new leaders? Looking further into our leadership is the heart of our parades, the Parade Marshall Randall Proctor and his Assistant Barrels. You all know these two, so be prepared for one busy parade season and I do look forward to it. All those new officers do need our support and help. The parade season is one of my favorite time of year but it does have its down side, time spent preparing for it and taking the time to be a part of it. This is the best form of advertisement for Syrian that we can present to the world especially when close to home. This brings me to a Shriner story when the wife hit him with a frying pan on the head. What was that for? The man asked. That was for the piece of paper I found in your pants pocket with the name Jenny the wife answered. When I was at the races last week, Jenny was the name of a horse I bet on The wife apologized and went back to her housework. Three days later the man was watching TV when his wife bashed him on the head with an even bigger frying pan, knocking him unconscious. Upon re-gaining consciousness the man asked why she had hit him again. Wife replied Your horse phoned! Essalamu Aleikum. Samuel Mattar Oriental Band Dan Depenbrock, Director The Syrian Divan for 2016 was installed January 2nd at the Temple and the Oriental Band was especially proud as Members and Associates of our Unit were placed in line. Art Weingartner was installed as the Illustrious Potentate, Rob Smith, Chief Rabban, Greg Pelfrey, Assistant Rabban, Tim Redrow High Priest & Prophet, and Jerry Ulm was elected as the 2016 Oriental Guide. Let s support all of our Officers, especially Jerry and Judy as they lead us in February marked the month for the O.B. to start holding our Meetings and Practices every Wednesday night leading up to our annual Jamboree which will be held in early June at Flint, Michigan. Lots of Temple activities coming up especially our annual Shrine Circus being held on February 26 th thru February 28 th at the BB&T Arena on the Campus of Northern Kentucky University. As most are aware, this event is our Temple s Major Fundraiser and we need all Nobles and our Ladies help in making this event a successful one..until Next Month, Take Care! John Longsworth, O.B. Scribe

8 SYRIAN SHRINE UNITS Hospital Host Greetings Nobles and friends. We would like to invite any Noble interested in volunteering some free time, we can use you in this working Syrian Shrine Unit. Most of the Hosts spend two or three days each month performing various tasks at our Shriners Hospital for Children. None of the tasks are strenuous but they are rewarding to knowing that you are contributing to the function of this remarkable institution. Unit meetings are twice each month, the second and fourth Tuesday, 9:30 A.M., usually over by 10:30 A.M. We meet in the hospital auditorium and parking is convenient in the attached hospital garage. Check us out, you ll be glad you did. We are looking forward to the annual Syrian Shrine Circus, and the Hospital Hosts Unit will be transporting patients and hospital personnel to one of the performances. A task performed by this Unit each year. In addition, we will assist in manning a special table, at each performance, passing out the good news regarding the wonderful work performed at our hospital. Now a story or two. Seems an elderly Noble was stopped by the police around 2:00 A.M. and was asked where he was going at that time of night. He replied, I m going to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body, as well as smoking and staying out late. The officer asked, Really? Who s giving that lecture at this time of night? The Noble replied, That would be my wife. Then the one about the bookseller conducting a market survey asked a Noble s wife Which book has helped you most in your life? She replied My husband s check book. My friends live life laugh often love much, and keep on smiling. Dick Manifold Ishtar Temple No. 54 Daughters of the Nile Wow! What a wonderful installation of the 2016 officers, and congratulations to our Potentate s Lady Kathy who wowed everyone with a Fabulous Furs show while the men had their meetings. It was enjoyable being at the Scottish Rite Center downtown there are so many beautiful rooms. The whole afternoon and evening were memorable. Don t forget our Annual Purse Party on Saturday, February 20 th at Montgomery Lodge at Noon. All ladies are invited call our Princess Royal Karen Armstrong ( or ) for reservations. This is your opportunity to purchase a new or slightly used handbag for a small amount of money. And who doesn t like purses? Mark your calendars now for the annual Installation of Officers on March 26 th at 2:00 pm at Norwood Masonic Center. We will be installing Karen Armstrong as our new Queen of the Nile along with her newly elected and appointed officers. Come out and join us at this open installation of officers. Have a great Valentine s Day give your sweetheart a perfect gift! Marian Baird, Past Queen right next to a burning fire that gives warmth to all that are there. If you considered a Shriner Club and live in Green Township or close to it come up to the Nathaniel Greene Lodge on 6394 Wesselman Rd. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month on the second floor, doors opening at 4:00 PM and the meeting starts at 6:00 followed by our dinner that has been very good since we changed caterers. Also available with our meal is a variety of drinks from camels milk, soft drinks, water, wine and coffee. The membership dues are only $15 a year. The cost of meals will change as to what we are having that month but very reasonable. So come on up to the West Side and enjoy the games led by the one and only Howard Abraham that take place after dinner. The left, right, center is what seems to be the most exiting time with the screams and laughter echoing across the halls of the lodge. Come on up and join us and have a great time. In closing I would like to ask you a simple question. Do you know that awesome feeling when you get into bed, fall right to sleep, stay asleep all night and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world? Yeah, me neither!! Your Scribe Sam Mattar Hillbilly Clan #5 The Hillbilly Clan is making plans for the coming year, starting with the St Patrick s Day Parade on March 12th. April is the annual trip to Pikeville, Kentucky for Hillbilly Days. Please get with Judy Ulm to make your room reservation, if you are planning on attending Pikeville April The hillbillies also be serving at one of the fish fry s in March at the Shrine Center, more detail on date to be announced. We welcome visitors to our meeting if you are considering joining the club and share in our fun. Roadsters We would like to wish Art and the Divan/Trustees a successful year. The annual Business Meeting and Installation Party was well attended with good food and friends. The ladies program was very nice - Kathy did a good job. February 9, the Mardi Gras Parade will be our first of the season. More details coming. The Shrine is getting busy with events such as the Fish Fry s and the 95th Shrine Circus. 9 MEMBERSHIP UP COMING / FUND EVENT RAISING Fundraising Committee We have great expectations for the new year of 2016 with some of our successful fundraisers in the past and with some new ones for the future Our first meeting on Jan.5th was very informative with some new ideals We will keep the nobles informed throughout the year. Yours in faith Tim Redrow and Lady Linda Membership Committee We need nobles to step up and join one of the most important committee of the Syrian Shrine, The Membership Committee. Please contact Bruce Pendleton for further details. Thanks to all the new Shriners that came out to our January meet and greet the Pote, Divan, Trustees and Unit Directors. Was a great night by all. Our list of non- payments for 2016 is high due to a later release due this year. Dues cards are new this year. They are plastic and there is some delay in sending them out to all, but they are on their way if you have paid your 2016 dues. As always Dues are needed to continue running the needs of OUR Temple. Please send that check or credit payment in to Sue or Debbie at Syrian office, at The Membership Committee is STILL reaching out to all Units/Clubs (one member) to sign up to be a Shrine Ambassador. New Shriners will be assigned to each unit to be mentored for their first year as a noble. Please contact Bruce Pendleton ( ) to be a listed mentor, supporting your club or unit. Great things happen when units and clubs recruit, active membership rises. The best way to enjoy your membership in the Shriners fraternity is to participate, and a great way to participate is to join a club or unit. Look for our upcoming rush party s in 2016 Why we are Shriners!!!!!! Hunter Woodhal He plays basketball, football and soccer; he wrestles; he runs track, snow skis, swims and roller blades, all with two prosthetic legs. Hunter Woodhall, 13, was born with fibular hemihelix of the left leg. The condition is a shortening or absence of one of the two bones in the calf, which may require amputation or bone-lengthening procedures to correct. In addition, his right ankle was fused. The Woodhalls had a difficult time finding information about Hunter s conditions. After exploring options that offered no real hope, the Woodhalls contacted Shriners Hospitals for Children. After consulting with a team of experts at the Tampa, Fla., facility, the Woodhalls proceeded with the amputation of Hunter s feet. After his surgery at just 11 months old Hunter was soon walking and running around. He hasn t stopped since. Later, the Woodhalls moved to Syracuse, Utah, where Hunter became a patient of Shriners Hospitals for Children Salt Lake City. Hunter is a straight A student and an accomplished athlete. The team of experts at Shriners Hospitals for Children Salt Lake City has always provided options to help Hunter be able to do anything he wants to do, including fitting him with some of the first Flex-Foot Cheetah custom feet that the hospital had ever provided, as well as special liners for wrestling, in addition to his prosthetic legs for daily use.
