WETHERBY HIGH SCHOOL IN THE PAST Recently Wetherby High School was sent a 1967 newspaper clipping by a Mrs Jan Walmsley. It shows the school s Sports Day. So we ve added a few photos to show you what our school was like all that time ago. Around the time of this newspaper article Harry Fitton was Headteacher at Wetherby High School. He was actually Wetherby High School s first Headteacher, having been previously appointed Head of the former Wetherby County Secondary School when it was situated on Crossley Street in Wetherby. He moved over to the new Wetherby High School as Head in He is pictured here with some students getting ready for a sponsored walk. He retired in Some members of staff who teach here remember Mr Fitton. Mrs Iles was appointed by Mr Fitton and remembers him as a tall and commanding presence. Both Mrs Sagar and Mrs Kitchen were pupils under Mr Fitton s leadership and remember him as a firm but fair Head. Mrs Kitchen still has her school reports with his comments, all very positive of course. As you can see Wetherby High School still carries on certain traditions, the Ski trip for one; though the hairstyles are a little different these days. For those of you whose parents came to the school why not ask them about what Wetherby High School was like? 4
EPRAISE REWARDS On Monday May 11th the top ten e-praise students from each year were rewarded for all their hard work this term. During coaching, Years were rewarded with a coffee morning to give them a break from the preparation for their upcoming exams and a time to socialise informally. During period 6, the top students from Years 7-10 came to the Hall and enjoyed an afternoon of games, music and refreshments. They were rewarded (mainly with sweets) and it s fair to say everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. This is the last e-praise rewards that myself and Emma will be organising, and we re extremely proud of all the students that have been rewarded. Finally, we would just like to say good luck to everyone with upcoming exams, and keep up the good work! Sam Kerry and Emma Lees Head Boy and Head Girl 5

Sahar Yasin Year 13 Fine Art student is continuing to develop her interest in portraiture and produced this startling and powerful image as part of her final exam. It was based on the themed question of Facial Expressions. It s a portrait of Mr D Roylance one of our site team. Sahar s focus was looking at how images of different expressions can alter our own moods when observing art. 7
Help! I ve Found My Way HELP! I m lost, in the world of my imagination. Is someone there, to help me find my way back to reality? HELP! I m lost, in the world of my nightmares. Is someone there, to free me from my hell I am embracing? HELP! I m lost, in the world of my pain. Is someone there, to release the anger from inside me? HELP! I m lost, between reality and fantasy. Is someone there, to show me the way to the real destination? HELP! I m lost, day dreaming, staring into space. Is someone there, to bring me back to Earth? HELP! I m lost, in my vortex of distress. Is someone there; I am not free anymore. HELP! I m lost, in the gaping gap between humanity. Is someone there, to show me the way, to close the gap? HELP! I m lost, in the belief of religion. Is someone there, to show me the path to God, the path to belief? HELP! I m lost, sat in a burning room, trapped. Is someone there, to set me free, to release the inner beauty of what my life may hold? HELP! I m lost, whilst the evolution of life passes me by. Is someone there, to help me evolve so I am head to head with life and we can carry on? Help! I m lost, in the dungeon of my own body. Is someone there, to hand me the key, to hand me back my freedom? Help! I m lost, in the ever - unfolding revolution of faith. Is someone there, to make me see clearly once again? Help! I m lost, in the conscience of my own demons. Is someone there, to rescue me from my own fears? Help! I m lost, in the distinction between rich and poor. Is someone there, to recite that we are all equal? Help! I m lost, in the ever transforming universe. Is someone there, to show me what is meant to be? Help! I m lost, in the environment where you once fought your battles. Are you there, to guide me through what once was? Help! I m lost, in the sacrifices that you undertake. Are you there; the friendly face that once stood before me? Help! I m lost, trying to figure out your ever next changing sequence, trying to work out what pattern you are foreshadowing, your every move. Are you there still, the friendly face that I see in the mirror? Help! I m not lost; I m forever in your grasp. You are there for me. The friendly face that stands beside me in my times of trouble. I don t need help! I ve found my way back, back home; fought my nightmares. I am stronger. I am fearless, thanks to you. Your friendly face has given me back my freedom. I am free once more. Thank you. It s not our dreams which will make us stronger; it s our nightmares that will. Jacob Kirby Year 10 Jacob Kirby in Year 10 wrote this moving and dramatic poem about the power of the imagination. It uses some remarkable word images and techniques. 8

WHAT IS THUNDER? Thunder is the sound that accompanies lightning during a thunderstorm. Sounds simple enough, but why does lightning even make a sound? Any sound you hear is made up of vibrations. The vibrations travel as a sound wave through the air, until they reach your ear. Lightning is a huge discharge of electricity, and this electricity shoots through the air, causing vibrations to be formed in two ways. 1. The electricity passes through the air and causes air particles to vibrate. 2. The vibrations are heard as sound. 3. The lightning is also very hot and heats up the air around it. Hot air expands, and in this case the air expands very quickly, pushing apart the air particles with force and creating more vibrations. THUNDER FACTS To judge how close lightning is, count the seconds between the flash and the thunderclap. Each second represents about 300m (984.25ft). Thunder is not only heard during thunderstorms. It is uncommon, but not rare, to hear thunder when it is snowing. The word thunder originally comes from Old Norse-the Viking language. The God Thor was the God of Thunder: So it literally meant Thor s din. 10
WONDERS OF THE WORLD THE TERRACOTTA ARMY AND THE TOMB OF CHINA S FIRST EMPEROR Workers digging a well outside the city of Xi an, China, in 1974 struck upon one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in the world, life-size clay soldiers poised for battle. The diggers notified the Chinese authorities, who dispatched archaeologist to the site. The archaeologists found thousands of clay soldiers, each with unique facial expressions and positioned according to rank. And though largely grey today, patches of paint hint at once brightly colored clothes. Further excavations have revealed swords, arrow tips, and other weapons, many in pristine condition. The soldiers are in trench- like, underground corridors. In some of the corridors, clay horses are aligned four abreast; behind them are wooden chariots. The Terracotta Army, as it is known, is part of an elaborate mausoleum (a type of Tomb) created to accompany the first emperor of China into the afterlife. Who was the Emperor who had this made? He was called Ying Zheng and he took the throne in 246 B.C. at the age of 13. By 221 B.C. he had unified a collection of warring kingdoms and took the name of Qin Shi Huang Di the First Emperor of Qin. During his rule, Qin standardized coins, weights, and measures; interlinked the states with canals and roads; and is credited for building the first version of the Great Wall. Emperor Qin ordered the mausoleum s construction shortly after taking the throne. More than 700,000 laborers worked on the project. It is estimated the tomb complex covers 170,000 square meters. To date, four pits have been partially excavated. Three are filled with the terracotta soldiers, horsedrawn chariots, and weapons. The fourth pit is empty, a testament to the original unfinished construction. Archaeologists estimate the pits may contain as many as 8,000 figures, but the total may never be known. The unexcavated Tomb The great tomb itself remains unexcavated. A contemporary describes the tomb as, Filled with models of palaces, pavilions and offices as well as fine vessels, precious stones and rarities. This same account says the tomb contains replicas of the area s rivers and streams made with mercury flowing to the sea through hills and mountains of bronze. Precious stones such as pearls are said to represent the sun, moon, and other stars. Modern tests on the tomb mound have revealed unusually high concentrations of mercury, lending credence to at least some of the historical account. Chinese archaeologists are also using remotesensing technology to probe the tomb mound. The technique recently revealed an underground chamber with four star-like walls. An archaeologist working on the site told the Chinese press that the chamber may have been built for the soul of the emperor. Experimental pits dug around the tomb have revealed dancers, musicians, and acrobats full of life and caught in mid-performance, a sharp contrast to the military poses of the famous terracotta soldiers. But further excavations of the tomb itself are on hold, at least for now. 11
This week we have some new reviews from our students THE THIEF OF TIME BY JOHN BOYNE RATING What s the book about? The Thief of Time is about someone who never gets old. The book opens in 1758 and Matthieu Zela is fleeing Paris for Dover, having witnessed the murder of his mother by his stepfather. But Matthieu s life is going to get very unusual before the 18th century ends; he discovers that his body has stopped ageing. Two hundred and fifty years later, at the end of the 20th century Mathieu s is able to look back on a life lived to the full. He has been an engineer, a rogue, a movie mogul, a soldier, a cable TV executive, and a lover to many. It s a pretty amazing life. What I liked about the book. The book spans two and a drama filled half centuries and is full of excitement and action. The Thief of Time manages to weave in Hollywood in the 1920s, the Great Exhibition of 1851, The French Revolution, The Wall Street Crash and much more. This is a great read. You may have heard of John Boyne, he wrote The Boy in the Stripped Pyjamas. I would recommend this book to anyone. WE WERE LIARS BY E LOCKHART RATING What the book about? This book is set in America and is all about a very wealthy family, the Sinclairs. Cadence Sinclair is the eldest granddaughter of a family so rich that they never mention money. Every year, the Sinclairs spend their summer on a private island, where the grandparents have built four houses for themselves and their three daughters, plus a smaller building for their cooks and cleaners. The Sinclairs are unlucky in other ways though. The have had their fair share of tragedies, however privileged. They just tuck them away behind their strong chins and perfect smiles. Raw emotions are hidden by a curtain of politeness. I don t know what happened, Cadence says of her aunt s divorce. The family never speaks of it. Cadence is close friends with two of the other grandchildren, Johnny and Mirren, and with an outsider, Gat, who joins them every year. Aged 15, Cadence falls in love with Gat. But at the end of that summer, she has an accident, a breakdown, or some kind of illness, but she can t remember what happened, how or why. All she knows is that she was found on the shore, the sea washing over her. She simply can t remember anything. What I liked about the book. This is a clever, sometimes disturbing read. It is very entertaining and the writer really brings out the personality of the main character. RATINGS GUIDE FANTASTIC GOOD OKAY NOT VERY GOOD POOR 12
SOUTH LEEDS SCHOOL ATHLETICS LEAGUE Well done to all those who competed at South Leeds stadium in the Leeds Schools Athletics League and Thursday May 14th. Stand out performances came from CV in Year 8 winning her 100m, LM in Year 10 winning his 200m and KW winning her javelin event. The intermediate boys and girls relay performed well both finishing 3rd. With overall results to be released, the squads did well and worked hard for each other. Success was also evident in a different form from the Year 8 s. All events were given everything by the junior teams who competed and never gave up, what a great attitude. Next meet after half-term. Mr Nightingale CHAMPIONS On Wednesday May 13th the Year 7 Tennis Team consisting of 4 teams of 2 players each travelled to Boston Spa for the Leeds Schools Timed Tennis Competition. The players were all beginners to tennis and were picked from their high performance earlier in the term in badminton. The Wetherby team were fortunate to have a one hour training session during Flexible Learning before the competition began. Each game lasted 15 minutes and followed the usual rules of tennis apart from each player serving twice in a row and the score being sequential. YEAR 7 FOOTBALL LEEDS SCHOOLS MERIT CUP SEMI-FINAL St Marys Menston 1 Wetherby 3 The winners of the North East faced the winners of the North West for a chance to make the Leeds Schools Finals one more time. After an enjoyable bus journey the heavens opened and the game was to be played in torrential rain. Wetherby started strongly and after a long period of sustained pressure JB slotted home from close range. Wetherby continued to dominate as the ball hung around in midfield. As the game opened up Menston used their pace to break free but it was Wetherby on a break who got a second. LD picked up the ball from the half way line and beat 3 men before slotting home. The second half resumed and Menston scored quickly to the annoyance of Captain JS. Wetherby absorbed some pressure and a fantastic save low to his right from JD kept one foot in the final. KW then came back on the pitch and used his strength and speed to win a free kick 20 yards out. LD struck the ball which KW directed into the Menston net from close range. The final whistle went and the boys were over the moon to get into the final albeit completely wet through. Man of the Match - LD (Simply Class) The girls league consisted of 8 teams with the champions being crowned consisting of GR and AS. The other girls team of CW & EP-G also playing superbly to finish 3rd. The boys league consisted of 12 teams and was broken down into two leagues, with the winners of each league playing a final to determine the champions. Both Wetherby Boys teams won their respective leagues with the final game being played by LD and BM against WH and SJ. In a fiercely fought contest LD and BM were crowned champions after winning Overall, the players picked up the skills quickly and used the correct tactics in every game played. Another great result from a very promising Year Group. Well done. Mr King 13
EVER THOUGHT ABOUT VOLUNTEERING? Perhaps you already do and don t realise what a valuable role you have decided to perform. Here is an article by the news-reader Martin Lewis from The Daily Telegraph The closest I came to doing my bit for charity during the first 15 years of my working life was popping a few coins in a collecting box outside Marks & Spencer. Being on the road as an ITN reporter left little time for anything else. All that changed, though, with an out-of-the-blue request for me to volunteer my time and what film-making talent I had to create the first promotional video for the (then) new charity Help The Hospices. That triggered a series of reports on News At Ten - the first time that hospices had ever featured on national television news in Britain. Other charities then reached out, and I found myself in a world of truly amazing people, among them thousands of volunteers whose dedication and attitude to life was a welcome antidote to the perfectly proper scepticism - and the sometimes less proper cynicism - of my chosen profession. Thirty years on, one of my current volunteering roles as chairman of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations has given me a helicopter view of the volunteering landscape. It is an awesome sight. Volunteers are estimated to contribute the equivalent of 42 billion to the British economy - more than the Defence budget. One in three adults gives time and effort to their chosen cause at least once a month. Of the 162,000 charities in Britain, more than 110,000 are run solely by volunteers. These are people of passion and commitment, who represent, for me, the closest our country gets to real democracy. That is because they have identified a problem or a need in their community, and cajoled friends and neighbours into doing something about it. The organisations they create provide our elected representatives with a key early-warning system for issues emerging at the grassroots of society, and an extra means of monitoring those already on the political radar. The story of this social army is one of repeated triumph over adversity, evident not only in the high-profile Pride of Britain Awards, Children in Need and Comic Relief, but also in a range of initiatives I have come to know and admire: the Beacon Awards; the UK Community Foundations; the Lord Mayor of London s Dragon Awards and, top of the tree, the Queen s Award for Voluntary Service, part of the honours system and the equivalent of an MBE. Questions Do you know anyone who regularly volunteers to help others? Have you thought about volunteering yourself and if so what might you do? Have you ever thought how valuable volunteering is? 14
