2 Statements Statements Mission The Osceola County Historical Society collects and preserves the county s history, and provides educational, research, and recreational opportunities to foster an understanding of the area s cultural and natural heritage for residents and visitors. Impact Accomplishments: 1. The annual Pioneer Day celebration was held in vember 2018 with all of the enthusiasm, energy, and positive responses of previous years. A steady increase in the number of visitors from year to year, is indicative of the success of this event over time with many guests coming back again and again. Enhanced survey tools, expanded advertising and the simple request for donations to this "free" event, helped to ensure that the audience's perceived value was positive. 2. A continuing effort to reach out to the Hispanic community in Osceola County was evidenced through all special exhibit marketing materials and signage being presented in Spanish and English. 3. OCHS has established a new, regional partner with the addition of the Soldier City (St. Cloud) Chapter of the main organization. 4. As mentioned, a major staff change in 2018, with the hiring of a new Executive Director after 10 years, has resulted in a number of subsequent changes in During the second half of 2018 and into FY 2019, major efforts to operate economically and with an eye to the bottom line have resulted in a much improved financial picture and thus a "cleaner" and clearer presentation of programs. Needs The organization's needs include: 1. Support for digitizing its unique archives including documents, photographs and ephemera representing over 100 years of Osceola County history. Digital printer and/or digitizing cost: $12, A digital tour experience for Pioneer Village that allows visitors to gather information from their phones with video enhancements and narratives. Cost: $ Upgraded security for the Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek to protect it from vandalism. Current sensors are not effective and an upgraded system is needed. Cost: $10,0005. Volunteers to assist with programming and operations at the Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek, the Osceola County Welcome Center and History Museum, and the Spence Pavilion and Research Center. Volunteer needs include tour guides, gardeners, maintenance persons, living history re-enactors, archive organizers, and individuals who can help with data entry. 2

3 Background The Osceola County Historical Society (OCHS) began when Charles and Twylah Hartley of St. Cloud and Alma Hetherington of Kissimmee chartered the organization October 29, Beginning in the 1960 s, the Historical Society displayed artifacts and other historical items in a wing of the Osceola Center for the Arts building. Two donations made in 1987 grew the organization. Ross & Willa Lanier donated their historic 1889 family home (known as the Lanier Cracker House ) and Carl & Ruth Yates Spence donated four acres of land including their family home by Shingle Creek in Kissimmee. OCHS moved the Lanier Cracker House to the donated property and called it the Osceola County Pioneer Enrichment Center. The opening of this Center helped mark the 1987 Centennial Celebration for Osceola County. Three years later, OCHS moved its growing collection of objects, artifacts, photographs, and archival materials related to Osceola County history from the Osceola Center for the Arts to the Osceola County Pioneer Enrichment Center. An Inter-Local agreement between the Historical Society, Osceola County, the City of Kissimmee, the City of St. Cloud, and the Osceola County School Board in 2006 funded hiring the first OCHS full-time employee, an Executive Director. As more historic structures were donated to the Pioneer Enrichment Center, the dream of the OCHS Board of Directors to display 1800s pioneer life in Osceola County through a village layout led to its new name: Pioneer Village. In 2010, the Pioneer Village was moved a few miles north to the county s new Shingle Creek Regional Park. Partnering with the County, OCHS opened the Osceola County Welcome Center, an interactive History Museum in Kissimmee, just over a mile from the Pioneer Village along a hiking/biking trail beside scenic Shingle Creek. Two years later, in 2014, the Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek Regional Park opened on 10 acres leased from the county for 50 years. OCHS relocated its four historical structures from the existing Pioneer Village at Bass Road to the new Shingle Creek park location. These included the Tyson House, the 1892 home of a farming family; the Lanier Cracker House; the 1890 Cadman Citrus Packing House & the Cadman family Boy s Room. Four historical structures from throughout the county were moved as well; a caretaker house & barn from Henry O. Partin s ranch in Kissimmee & the kitchen & main house from the Cadman s property in Narcoossee. In 2016, through a state grant, a screened pavilion and four replica structures were constructed at the Village: an 1800s Church, Schoolhouse, Train Depot, and Sawmill. A replica of an 1800's General Store was added in 2017.Today over 17,000 people a year learn about the rich history of Osceola County by visiting the Osceola County Welcome Center & History Museum & the Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek. OCHS attractions are the setting for a wide range of activities including private parties, weddings and events, business & team-building meetings, living history demonstrations, exhibits, educational programs and field trips. Additionally, the OCHS curator oversees research using the collection of artifacts, historical documents, & archives located in a climate-controlled facility at the Spence Pavilion and Research Center, formerly known as the Pioneer Enrichment Center. CEO/Executive Director Statement The Osceola County Historical Society (OCHS) is an ever-evolving organization led by an enthusiastic team of Board Members, Staff, and Volunteers. In the past year, a number of changes have occurred with result being a fresh perspective on the existing mission. With a new staff and leadership in place, efforts to preserve the unique history of Osceola County and to share that history in many diverse and engaging ways with the residents and visitors of our county is functioning more efficiently and enthusiastically. We are continuing to take great pride in the organization's accomplishments and look forward to the making history, in the future! Board Chair Statement The Osceola County Historical Society is rebranding as Osceola History for our 70th anniversary in We believe that this name change will more easily identify the organization's mission to the public. Our Board of Directors is made up of community members who hold or have held many high-profile positions within our community and believe in preserving our history for future generations. Exemplifying that belief is the Board s desire to consistently add to our historic holdings through our archives and our structure inventory at our Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek. We believe that visiting our historical sites helps the visitor understand our past and present. Areas of Service Geographic Areas Served 3

In 2018, changes in the leadership of the organization and the focus of the Board has resulted in operations that make maximum usage of the funding available to the organization through the support of the City of Kissimmee, Osceola County, Experience Kissimmee, etc. Indicators Our new strategic plan was approved by our Board of Directors in 2018.A new experienced Executive Director was hired October 1, Progress Progress will be based upon benchmarks set in the strategic plan approved by the Board of Directors in

6 Programs Programs Traveling Trunks Description Class Code This educational program is designed to promote the area's history by bringing the history to the children. This opportunity is provided to Osceola County teachers who are able to borrow the "trunk" filled with artifacts, books, and other teaching aids to complement the teacher's lesson plans on the subject. The trunks are provided at no cost to the area teachers. This is a great resource to enable teachers to have history become alive, as some schools and classes are not always able to participate in the field trip program to visit the grounds themselves. We currently offer three trunks: Florida Cowman trunk, Seminole Indian Trunk, and Early Learning Historical Trunk. 7 Art in the Archives Description The Art in the Archives programs are designed to combine art and history to create an immersive program for adults or children. The organization's first Art in the Archives programs were in conjunction with a Florida Highwaymen Paintings exhibit, and field trip groups who chose this special Art in the Archives option were able to create their own artworks in the Florida Highwaymen style. Seeing success with this initial program, the organization decided to offer this program with each of its temporary exhibitions, and added special after-hours programming for adults to visit the museum to view these temporary exhibitions and create their own works of art following the instruction of an expert artist. The organization hosts Art in the Archives adult programming 3x per year, and will continue to offer the activities associated with these programs as an option for field trip groups.
