(Photo by XP Ranch Photography) Hope this newsletter finds you all very well. As you may be noticing, a lot of things are changing within the NCA and hopefully to your satisfaction. Because lets all be honest, this organization is about you and your needs as a dogging community. We are here because of you and the promotion of our dogs. First and foremost, we had a good Finals. The cattle were great. The weather was a little uncooperative at times, but for the most part was acceptable. The courses were challenging and progressively got tougher and really challenged the dogs and the handlers. The fellowship with friends and family will be unforgettable. We crowned 4 new national champions. Brian Jacobs of California dominated the Horseback class. That was my first experience to be around Brian, and clearly, he is a class act and will undoubtedly help the NCA in the new director position as well as the promotion of the working cattledogs. So proud papa moment, my son Seth Mahurin won the National Title in the Intermediate class. This boy has been working extremely hard over the past year and he handled his dog and the cattle very well. It was a very exciting Intermediate class. We will watch this Intermediate class very closely in the coming years expecting great things. You all should be proud. Welcome to the Open class, Seth. My good friend Steve Knipmeyer won the Nursery National Title with Nikki. This class was loaded with great dogs and great handlers. The young dogs handled the pressure of the open field and a very challenging course as well as Open dogs. Our Open National Champion, one of my mentors, is Kent Herbel and the great dog XP Sweep. What a showing this dog made with again another class full of tough competition and able handlers and dogs capable of completing and dominating these courses. Great job to all our National Champions! So, with that being said, the board has decided that it was such a good thing this year, that by planning early maybe it can be made into a greater thing next year. NCA National Finals will be held in Cheyenne Wyoming at the Archer Complex June So, plans are being made to help improve upon what was clearly a success this year, to make even a better finals next year. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Please contact any director for anything you as a member would like to see different. We are welcoming Duane Packard to our Board of Directors. Duane has a lot of great experience and ideas to help expand the NCA and improve it. Please give Duane a call or catch him at a trial and visit with him. I can attest that Duane is ready to listen and help in any way he can. On a sadder note, we are losing our Executive Secretary, Tresea Briggs. What a truly wonderful person she has been for the NCA. Such knowledge, help, and sheer push to get the job done and keep things moving, as well as a very good friend just to talk to when we needed someone to listen. Tresea, you will be missed. But to add, we have hired Carrie Pottinger as our new Executive Secretary. Carrie is excited to be added to the team and we as an organization are lucky to have her. She will help so please all welcome her to the doggin world. To close, many things are changing, but one thing that binds us all remains the same. The push, the constant pursuit to better and promote the working cattle dog. That is what binds us all, and will only keep the NCA together, but grow beyond all our expectations. Keep them Doggies Rollin!

3 2018 NATIONAL FINALS CHEYENNE, WYOMING by Lori Herbel Cheyenne may have been made famous for their Frontier Days Rodeo, but the Cowdogs came to town in June to make a name for themselves. The NCA National Finals were held at the Archer Complex, just a short drive east of Cheyenne. Home to the Laramie County Fair, the complex boasts two outdoor arenas and an open field for competitive cattledog events. Tuesday was check-in day at the centrally located office between the arena and field. Rigs started rolling in from all around the United States and Canada. Old friends were reunited and new friends were made this week, as the cattledogs took the field to compete for a piece of the over $30,000 in cash and prizes just waiting to be awarded. The cattle were commercially bred black heifers from a ranch owned by Curt and Patty Epler, located just a few short miles from the Finals location. The nearly 200 head of heifers came in looking good and worked well in sets for the entirety of the five day event. Jimmy Walker and Pippa were the first to take the Open field on day one, Wednesday, at 8 a.m. following a handlers meeting and the presenting of the US and Canadian flags and anthems. The Walker team started the nationals off on a high note, earning a full score of 240 in 7:55. The Wyoming wind made a fierce appearance throughout the day, causing some hearing issues for the dogs in the tall grass on the Open field. The handlers were facing into a wind that was at times over 30 mph as they directed their dogs on the outwork in the 12 acre field. It was a tough round but the handlers upped their game to offset the difficulties. The first round of the Intermediate class kicked off in the east arena at 10:30 a.m. Thanks to a lot of volunteer work and a few paid hands, the days went smoothly in both the area and the field. A Handler and Sponsor Appreciation dinner was held in the M Building at 6 p.m. One of our many sponsors, the Laramie County Cowbelles, served as hostesses for a delicious brisket dinner with all the fixings plus an entire table of incredible desserts. A new and well-liked tradition that started in 2017 with the Afton Finals is the NCA benefit auction, which followed the meal. Thanks to the generosity of several of our association members, we had two tables of items to auction off. By the end of the evening, the NCA had taken in $6,500 and several people went home happy with their new possessions, a couple of which were young Border Collie prospects. Our thanks to auctioneer Chris Probst. The second rounds of Open and Intermediate were held Thursday. The weather cooperated for us a bit better, and made for a great day of working dogs. Our announcers, Kim Allen and John Green of Hot Springs, South Dakota, kept the crowd and exhibitors entertained and apprised of the run order and scores. Our thanks to Kim and John for putting in the long days and doing a great job. The Cowbelles came through for us again Thursday night, serving us a lasagna dinner prior to the Annual Meeting and Awards Presentations. We had three new awards this year, in addition to the high point dog awards. Our first inductee into the NCA Hall of Fame for Handlers is Bob Wagner of Nunn, Colorado. Bob was a founding member of the NCA back in 2012, and has been on the board of directors since then. The first recipient for the NCA Distinguished Service Award was Tresea Briggs, our Executive Secretary, who will be retiring later this month. Tresea has put in a lot of hours for the NCA and will be greatly missed. Our third new award is the NCA Hall of Fame for Dogs. Our first inductee is JR Red, owned by Juan and Joni Reyes of Wheatland, Wyoming. Red has definitely put his stamp on the cattledog world, in fact a large percentage of the competing dogs at Finals this year have JR Red in their pedigree. Our High Point Dogs of the Year were also recognized. These are the dogs that finished in the number one spot in their respective classes, by earning points throughout the trial year. Earning the Pete Carmichael Award for the High Point Open dog was Tanya Williams and PR Zeke. The Red Oliver Award for High Point Nursery dog was awarded to Andrew Schilke and Banks. The High Point Intermediate Award went to Miles Bailey and Fancy. Our Open Rookie Award of the year was earned by Chris Timmons. Friday and Saturday found the Nursery and Horseback teams taking the field and arena. The Nursery class was held in the Open field, Horseback was held in the arena. Our course directors came up with some challenging courses that added a higher level of difficulty each day to sort out the best dogs. Scores and times from the first two go rounds were combined for each class to determine the top 40% eligible to come back for the third and final go round. Eighteen Open dogs came back, eleven came back in Nursery, thirteen in Intermediate, and six in the Horseback class. The course directors upped the ante by designing challenging, but doable courses. The weather turned chilly, with wind and moisture. Spectators scrambled for sweatshirts and rain gear and gathered beneath the large tent provided by the Archer Complex to watch the Final runs. The rain caused the course committee to implement Setout Plan B as the truck and trailer were not able to get into the field due to the soft ground. The crowd stayed in suspense until the last dogs had made their final run. After all three scores were accumulated, the winners were determined. The Intermediate Championship was earned by 16 year old Seth Mahurin and his dog Quita, of Thayer, Kansas. Intermediate Reserve Champion was earned by Michael Truesdell and Hank, of Nowata, Oklahoma. In the Horseback class, both Champion and Reserve were won by Brian Jacobs with his dogs GS Romel and GS Levi, from

4 Wilton, California. Our Nursery Championship was earned by Steve Knipmeyer and Nikki of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, with Reserve going to Brian Jacobs and Klem. In the Open, the championship was earned by Kent Herbel and his dog Sweep, from Putnam, Oklahoma, with Reserve going to Steve Knipmeyer and Pete. It was a fun-filled five days of good dog work and excellent handling by some of the top dog/handler teams in North America. Quite a few locals came out to watch the dogs work, with several inquiring about the possibility of adding a dog as a ranch hand. The cowdogs will return to Cheyenne in The board has already taken action to contract the Archer Complex for June Meanwhile, the dogs have already gone back to work. For t h e m, i t s n o t about the ribbons or checks, it s just about one thing working cattle. 9 The Sterling Whistle An NCA Newsletter Staff Award One Special Person! There are people in the world that are known by just a single name, whether it be their nickname, first name or last name. Just the mention of that one name and everyone immediately knows who it is. Einstein, Lincoln & Elvis are just a few examples. Within the NCA we also have one of those people that are known just by one name, a first name. In fact, if asked, most members would struggle to remember the last name of this person. And when you are as well-known as this person, there is no need for a last name. And that one name? Tresea! Tresea has been the executive secretary for the NCA organization from almost the beginning, going through a new organization s growing pains, countless Directors, answering any members with questions and a source for info for the newsletter staff. At the end of July, Tresea will retire from her position within the NCA. For someone that doesn t have a need for a cattle dog, she put her all into the job, learning about the cattle dogs as she went and even got so involved with the dog s usefulness that two of her brothers now have dogs to work on their ranches due to encouragement from her. It s also fitting that her last Finals was at Cheyenne, close to where she grew up. In tribute to Tresea, it would be appropriate to list a few of her attributes that NCA benefited from by using the letters of her well recognized first name: Queen of all Trades: Even though her title was executive secretary, she really is much more than that, Supporter, Greeter, Organizer, Promoter and Public Relations are just a few of the roles she has played. Respectful: She has treated everyone with respect, no matter who or where they were from, what questions she was asked, or what kind of help they needed. To unite an organization and to keep an organization united, respect is necessary and Tresea did that to the nth degree. Efficient: Anytime someone juggles 2 jobs at once has got to be efficient. And she has also proven that at each Finals. How she can do all her Finals duties with a constant stream of people going in and out of the office takes a great deal of concentration, perseverance and effective use of time. Smiling: I would think there are times that the smile maybe a shade dimmer (she is human after all!) but has any one of us seen her without a bright smile for very long? That smile also makes her. Endearing: The definition for Endearing is feeling very fond of a person because of their behavior. With her warm, friendly greetings to people that she may only see once a year along with her many other attributes truly makes for an endearing person. Simply Awesome: That says it all! Thank you, Tresea, for the minutes, hours, days, months and years that you have graced NCA with. You have more than earned the Sterling Whistle. You may be retiring but will never be forgotten by the members that have had the pleasure to meet and work with you. It is us that have been blessed by knowing you. We hope you will come to trials but this time to relax, enjoy the company and actually see some runs. We d love to see you! (Oh, in case you are wondering, Briggs is her last name!)

I am honored that the NCA Board approved me to serve as your next Executive Secretary. I understand I have big shoes to fill due to Tresea s most excellent service she always provided to the membership and board. I will do all I can to serve you well with Tresea s training and guidance and the Board s support. I feel so very welcome! The NCA would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to NCA founding member Bob Wagner and Gene Check, Inc. for providing a location for the NCA office since the inception of the Association in Watch your s and the NCA website for updated contact information for the NCA as we make the office transition, effective August 1. THANK YOU!!! OBSTACLE HQ I live in Nogales, Arizona, and am married to Craig Pottinger. I trained and ran border collies at sheepdog trials for almost 20 years but over time moved into other interests and activities such as yoga, volunteer organizations and my expanding career. I earned my PhD in Adult Education, taught elementary school, and now work for Western Governors University (WGU) Teachers College. I am a local school board member and served as a President, Secretary and Treasurer for several volunteer organizations over the years. I believe my past experiences will serve me well to fulfill the Executive Secretary responsibilities of the NCA. Thank you for your support and I look forward to working with all of you in the coming years!!

11 PACKARD ELECTED AS NCA MIDWEST REGION DIRECTOR Duane Packard and his wife live in southeast Wyoming, where they are building a small cow herd and run a cattle hauling business. Duane has been a member of the NCA for several years, which has given him the opportunity to meet some very good dog handlers and stockmen from all parts of the country. In addition, it s given him a lot of enjoyment and created lasting friendships along the way. Since getting their first Border Collie, Duane and Dottie have come to use their dogs in just about anything they do with livestock. It s hard to imagine even trying to work cattle without the dogs to help, said Duane. As a dog handler, I take advantage of any opportunity to show our customers how useful stock dogs can be. Several of them even ask now if I have a dog along to help settle or move the cattle after they re unloaded. Duane s primary goals as the Midwest Regional Director will be to increase member participation and growth, and find more opportunities to show livestock producers and the general public about the benefits of using good, well-broke stock dogs. If you would like to visit with Duane give him a call at , or 57ranch57@gmail.com. Leave a message if he doesn t answer, the cell towers in Wyoming can be few and far between. He ll get back to you as soon as he gets back into service. Welcome to the Board, Duane! 12 First NCA Futurity held in Oklahoma by Sonny Mahurin The NCA futurity was held May 3rd and May 4th in Afton Oklahoma in the very nice Flying Cow Arena. The restrictions on these dogs were that they had to be born on or after April 1, 2016, and they could not have run in a trial prior to the futurity. We ran three full rounds and the champion was determined by the full cumulative scoring of all three rounds. Each course was designed to not only show the control of the dogs, but also the power and the versatility. Each course contained a fetch, several interesting obstacles and finished with a pen and sort which can be quite challenging to a young dog. Our payout was structured a little different as well too. We paid three moneys in the average, and paid holes in the day for money each day. The kicker with the day money is to be eligible for the day money you could not have won any hole in the average. This allowed for each contestant to be capable of winning a little money. DAY 1 DAY 2 DAY 3 1..Brent Daniel Jeff 1. Sonny Mahurin Beast 1. Brent Daniel Jeff 2 J.W. Newton Blaires Piper 2. J.W.
