1 Ten-Hut September 2015 I attended the District 1 meeting August 1st in Cannon Falls, Mn. We were informed that a change was made to the bylaws of the Womenʼs Auxiliary. The name was changed to Auxiliary with men now able to join. The thinking here was that a man whose wife is VFW qualified would not be able to gain membership in a post, especially one where a Menʼs Auxiliary does not exist. My understanding is that this change has been desired for some time. For all you connoisseurs of good food, the Friday meals will be starting soon. The first will be a shrimp boil. Be sure to check out the schedule of events that are going on during September. The food is always tremendous and itʼs a great way to support the club. There will be a chill in the air shortly so enjoy the rest of the summer. Commander s Corner Greetings, The picnic went very well with lots of good food and prizes. It was good seeing that Merlin Lidtke was able to attend. We all are wishing that he continues to do well. Another pleasant surprise was that the sale of the VFW raffle calendars went well. We almost sold out, however more calendars have been ordered and they should be available at the post almost as I write this column. Cost per calendar is $20.00 each with $5.00 of that going to Post While I am on the subject of the calendars someone purchased one at the picnic and did not fill out the stub at the bottom. If you are or know the individual that purchased the calendar, fill out the stub and drop it off at the post so that it can be sent in to be eligible for the drawings which start 01 January Also hanging on a wall in the club entryway is a limited edition print of a photo taken at sunrise in the fog of the Twin Towers in NYC sometime before 9/11. It is for sale and the cost is $ Ten percent of the profits from the sale of these prints will be donated to veteran and firefighter organizations. Until next month, Jim Lukaszewski Commander Post

2 Sick Call Chaplain s Corner fo r s i c k c a l l v i s i t s, c a l l Service Officer Al Stampka at Daniel B. Hoyt left this command for the forces of the Almighty Commander. Daniel had landed with the D-Day forces on Omaha beach. He had then been assigned to establish refugee/displaced person camps behind Allied lines as the move started across Europe. His camp became the model for those that followed throughout Europe. Your presence as a WSU history professor will be missed as sell as your membership at this post. Farewell, Comrade, farewell. Al didnʼt do any visiting this past month so there is no visitation report; however, Al did attend the viewing of Daniel B. Hoyt to represent Post [House Committee conʼt.] Live music returns on September 18 with Roger Buege and the Country Classics playing in the hall from 5:30pm-8:30pm. That means there will be plenty of room to dance Dustin will be cooking up his famous Dinner Baskets for your dining pleasure from 5pm-7pm. We would love to have your assistance during our Friday meals. We are asking for your help washing dishes during this fallʼs Friday Night meals. We have a really nice dishwasher in the kitchen, and weʼll be happy to train you to use the equipment Itʼs pretty easy and youʼll usually be done by 7:30-8pm. Contact Dustin or Maggie if you can help House Committee Report Summer is always a little slow at the bar but we made it through the summer and still have money in the checking account even after expensive insurance payments and all the usual fees that are just the cost of doing business. Thank you for your support this summer. Food on Friday Nights begins again on September 11, Patriot Day And to start the season with a bang weʼre having a Shrimp Boil with Extra Jumbo Shrimp, Crawfish, Smoked Sausage, Potatoes, and Corn on the Cob from 5pm-7pm The price is $11 and reservations for supper are encouraged. You can sign up at the bar or call during normal business hours to get your name on the list. Fall into Fall with Guest Chef Julie Kulas The First Day of Autumn is on Wednesday, September 23, and it also happens to be half-way to Saint Patrickʼs Day So weʼre celebrating Fall into Fall with a delicious Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner prepared by everyoneʼs favorite Guest Chef, Julie Kulas. Dinner will be served from 5pm-7pm and reservations are encouraged. [go to page 3, column 2] Remember if you want your Ten-Hut sent by , you must send your address to Mel Bailey at mclairbailey@yahoo.com. The website has moved to it's permanent location on the Internet. 2

5 Report: Post 1287 Annual Picnic August 8 turned out to be a beautiful day for our Annual Picnic The weather was perfect and the food was delicious. Plus all our members, guests, and loyal patrons made the picnic a great success. All the children attending received a nice door prize. Ninetyfive adults signed into the guest book to receive their tickets for a chance at the adult door prizes. Door prize donations from Hy- Vee, Bloedows, Athletic Club, and our members, brought smiles to all the lucky winners. The money collected from the Tanks for Tips and the silent auction items totaled $300 which was donated to the Building Fund for upcoming projects and to maintain the bar and meeting hall areas. Thank you to the generosity of the Ladies Auxiliary for their donation of $350 which paid for all of that free delicious food and beer and the great prizes. The success of the picnic was also made possible with the help of an Army of volunteers; Cheryl and Vinny Perez and their son Alex, Jim Lukaszwewski, Dustin Dahl, Jim and Ellen Lorenz, John Jacobson, Mike and Maggie Stalka, along with the support of all who attended. Thank you all Report: Purple Heart Day Open House In observance of Purple Heart day and to honor Purple Heart recipients, the Winona Area Purple Heart Veterans Group hosted an open house at VFW Post 1287 on Friday, August 7.
