March 6-8, 2014 Manhattan, Millie Dillmount steps off the train from Salina, Kansas. Surrounded by a throng of fabulous flappers, Millie's a fish out of water, until she bobs her hair and sheds her Sunday best for a higher hemline and a hotter look. As she walks along the street Millie is mugged. She seeks help from Jimmy Smith, but all he provides is unsolicited advice for her to make a U-turn and return home. A week passes, and we're at the Hotel Priscilla, where a bevy of stage-struck hopefuls are starting their day. Enter Miss Dorothy, and she and Millie quickly prove that opposites attract. Meanwhile, in the laundry room, Mrs. Meers, the owner of the hotel, plots to kidnap Miss Dorothy. Why? Mrs. Meers runs a white slavery ring, targeting orphans whose sudden disappearance goes unnoticed, and Miss Dorothy fits the bill. Mrs. Meers barks instructions at her immigrant henchmen, Ching Ho and Bun Foo. The two brothers quarrel over Ching Ho's crisis of conscience, but Bun Foo reminds him that crime is the only career that pays well enough for them to bring their mother over from Hong Kong. Later that afternoon, Millie begins her job hunt, or rather husband hunt: Millie's "modern" plan is to find work as a stenographer to an eligible bachelor and wind up his wife. On her list of potential bosses/hubbies is Trevor Graydon III at the Sincere Trust Insurance Company. Back at the hotel, Mrs. Meers tries to dope Miss Dorothy with a poisoned apple, but is repeatedly interrupted. Millie takes the Priscilla girls out on the town to celebrate her new job, and she runs into Jimmy Smith. He gets them into a speakeasy, and though Millie is initially standoffish, they eventually join in a dance. By the time they are raided and land in jail, Jimmy reconsiders his assessment of Millie. Jimmy asks Millie to a Yankees game, but she reveals her plan to marry her boss. Saving face, Jimmy pretends that his interest is platonic, suggesting that she bring Miss Dorothy along. A trio is formed for nightly excursions to, among others, the glamorous penthouse of Muzzy Van Hossmere, Manhattan's most celebrated chanteuse.
6 Later that night, on Muzzy's terrace, Jimmy needles Millie about her plan to marry a man who thinks of her as "a typewriter on legs." Their quarrel escalates until Jimmy kisses Millie passionately. He exits in a panic, leaving her alone to sort out her feelings. She returns to the Hotel Priscilla in a state of bliss, which is quickly shattered when she sees Jimmy sneaking out of Miss Dorothy's room after what appears to be a late-night tryst. ACT II SYNOPSIS The next morning, Millie is miserable. She wills herself into wasting no more time on Jimmy Smith. Instead, she redoubles her efforts to seduce Mr. Graydon, until Miss Dorothy drops by and she and Mr. Graydon are immediately smitten. Jimmy appears on the window ledge outside of Millie's office, where he declares his feelings for her. Millie, too, is falling in love, as are Mr. Graydon, Miss Dorothy and Ching Ho, whose heart has belonged to Miss Dorothy since the moment they met. Meanwhile, Mrs. Meers is more determined than ever to get Miss Dorothy. Ching Ho tries to stop her, but she reminds him of her promise to import their elderly, ailing mother in exchange for their evil-doings. Millie and Jimmy go to Café Society to hear Muzzy sing but they can't pay the bill so they are put on dishwashing duty. Millie realizes that the unemployed Jimmy is as far from her plan to marry well as a girl can get, so she flees the kitchen and heads to Muzzy's dressing room for some sound advice. Muzzy explains that though she herself married a multi-millionaire, she had no idea he was rich until after their engagement, when a green glass brooch he gave her turned out to be emeralds. Muzzy leaves Millie alone in the dressing room to mull over her advice. WHO S WHO IN THE CAST Sarah Wier (Class of Alice) is thrilled to be in her first LC production! She recently appeared in Spokane Civic Theatre's Grease and Happy Days, as well as many shows at North Central and SCT. Sarah would like to thank Mr. Pschirrer, Mrs. Maguire, the cast and crew of Millie, and the rest of this incredible department for this wonderful opportunity, their warm welcomes, and their loving attitudes. Mr. Graydon shows up at Café Society in a drunken stupor: Miss Dorothy has checked out of the Hotel Priscilla with no forwarding address. Putting their heads together, Millie, Jimmy and Mr. Graydon realize that Mrs. Meers must be running a white slavery ring. They persuade Muzzy into checking in as a new-orphan-in-town. Mrs. Meers takes the bait and is exposed as the mastermind criminal she is. Love abounds as Millie and her new found friends all find truly wonderful spouses as a throng of flappers appear. Through them walks another girl from nowhere, ready to take her chances in the never-ending tale that is New York City.
7 Ms. Melina, When I watched your first leading role at the "tiny" age of 6, I knew we had a little star. Now, 10 years later, you are still wowing us!! Congratulations Ms. Muzzy. I know that you and your fellow castmates will be treating us to another fantastic and memorable performance. I am SO proud of you and SO looking forward to the show. In Boca Lupo Sweetie. Love you forever, Grandma THE 1920 s The 1920s, also called the Roaring Twenties or the Jazz Age, was a time of great change and prosperity. Shortly after the First World War, countries such as the United States and Great Britain had strong and thriving economies. In the United States, people increasingly moved from rural areas to urban cities, and the urban population outnumbered the rural population for the first time in history. Prohibition, the banning of alcohol, took place from 1919 to 1933 in Canada and the United States. Nevertheless, the illegal sale and consumption of alcohol was prevalent in speakeasies, popular drinking houses of this time. The classic American novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, chronicled this era, and it is for this reason that the 1920s are often referred to as the Gatsby era. Traditional women s roles were being challenged in the 1920s, with the emergence of flappers and women s suffrage. Women s suffrage, the movement to grant women the right to vote, succeeded in 1920 in the United States, where all women over the age of 18 were allowed to vote in elections. The term flapper refers to both a fashion style and a progressive movement for women. Flappers challenged traditional conventions; they smoked, drove cars, wore heavy makeup, and had a casual attitude towards sex. They rejected traditional female roles and believed that women should be granted
8 independence. They advocated for women s rights and supported feminist movements. Those less progressively inclined frowned upon the flappers, considering them to be improper and unladylike. Flappers took on their own fashion. They refused to wear restrictive corsets and raised the hemlines of their dresses. A boyish look was popular as flappers wore straight A-line and often baggy dresses and bobbed their hair. They wore lots of make-up and even powdered their knees. They listened and danced to jazz music and popularized the Charleston, a dance that involves the risqué kicking up and exposing of legs. There were differing degrees of flappers, as some women only adopted the flapper fashion and not attitude. The 1930s brought with it the Great Depression and an end to the flapper fashion and lifestyle. Although the flapper era did not last very long, these women set a precedent for future generations and contributed greatly to women s liberation. The Harlem Renaissance also took place in the 1920s. This renaissance describes the spread and influence of African American culture, especially with regards to music. Jazz music, originating from New Orleans, became extremely popular. Jazz is known for its improvisation and was thought to be liberating as it was not very rigidly structured. 11 Melina, Who knew you would do a roaring twenties show someday! Have fun with Muzzy. DIRECTOR S NOTES The educational experiences derived from being involved with a production like THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE reach far beyond performance skill. We are so proud of our current students with their multitude of talents and our alumni who continue to support from afar. This season, MILLIE was chosen to feature a classic yet modern musical. The thoroughly modern characters, the style of the times, and the enduring idea of finding true love are all worth showcasing. In creating the world of New York City, we also wanted this production to carry the flavor of the Northwest. Many of the design elements come from local architecture and inspiration. The design for the flying art deco panels is based on the windows of the Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park in Seattle and other scenic elements are based on the deco features in Spokane s own Fox Theatre. We are so proud of you, Mom, Dad, and Daniel As we move into the holiday season, we as a Tiger Drama department have much to be thankful for. First and foremost, we are thankful for the multitude of support and dedication shown by our students, parents, and community members. An entire metropolis of people helps bring the modern world of 1922 New York to you this evening. In this production you will see over 100 costumes, 40 wigs, 175 light cues, and 150 flying scenic cues. Our cast has been working tirelessly to perfect acting scenes and learn complex dance pieces and songs while our dedicated crew has been bedecking and lighting the stage, calling the cues, assisting with costume changes, organizing the preparing the props, putting on the makeup while the orchestra members have worked to refine complex musical phrases and instrumentation. Every set and lighting element you see tonight was created solely by students in our department and this production is the culmination of hundreds of hours of work by our dedicated LC Tiger Drama students. And to you, the audience member, for your continued support of Tiger Drama. Enjoy the show!
