Les Miserables is without question one of the most emotional musicals I have encountered. Musically it literally grabbed my heart with beautiful, haunting melodies. The story is triumphant in mercy and redemption of the law and justice. It is a reminder that although evil may appear to be the victor for the moment, eventually all will be put right. Love, mercy and redemption will take the place of war, law, and punishment. Do you hear the people sing? They will walk behind the plowshare they will put away the sword. They will harvest, not fight. The chains will be broken and all men will have their reward. Not what they deserve, for we all deserve justice, sometimes we deserve punishment, but we will have our reward. Mercy will grant us forgiveness and a new life. I cry each time I see Les Miserables, but, I am joyful at the promise of the future. I am proud of our students who have risen to the challenge of undertaking such a BIG show. I am privilege to have watched them grow both musically and emotionally. Do you hear the people sing? I can! Kim Kroeger Vocal Music Director 5

9 Synopsis ACT I PROLOGUE: 1815, DIGNE Jean Valjean, released on parole after 19 years on the chain gang, finds that the yellow ticket-of-leave he must display condemns him to be an outcast. Only the saintly Bishop of Digne treats him kindly and Valjean, embittered by years of hardship, repays him by stealing some silver. Valjean is caught and brought back by police, and is astonished when the Bishop lies to the police to save him, also giving him two precious candlesticks. Valjean decides to start his life anew. 1823, MONTREUIL-SUR-MER Eight years have passed and Valjean, having broken his parole and changed his name to Monsieur Madeleine, has risen to become both a factory owner and Mayor. One of his workers, Fantine, has a secret, illegitimate child. When the other women discover this, they demand her dismissal. The forman, whose advances she has rejected, throws her out. Desperate for money to pay for medicines for her daughter, Fantine sells her locket, her hair, and then joins the whores in selling herself. Utterly degraded by her new trade, she gets into a fight with a prospective customer and is about to be taken to prison by Javert when The Mayor arrives and demands she be taken to a hospital instead. The Mayor then rescues a man pinned down by a runaway cart. Javert is reminded of the abnormal strength of convict Jean Valjean, a parole-breaker whom he has been tracking for years, but who, he says, has just been recaptured. Valjean, unable to see an innocent man go to prison in his place, confesses to the court that he is prisoner At the hospital, Valjean promises to the dying Fantine to find and look after her daughter Cosette. Javert arrives to arrest him, but Valjean escapes. 1823, MONTFERMEIL Young Cosette has been lodged for five years with the Thenardiers who run an inn, horribly abusing the little girl whom they use as a skivvy while indulging their own daughter, Éponine. Valjean finds Cosette fetching water in the dark. He pays the Thénardiers to let him take Cosette away and takes her to Paris, but Javert is still on his tail , PARIS Nine years later, there is a great unrest in the city because of the likely demise of the popular leader General Lamarque, the only man left in the government who shows any feeling for the poor. The urchin Gavroche is in his element mixing with the whores and beggars of the capital. Among the street gangs is one led by Thenardier and his wife, which sets upon Jean Valjean and Cosette. They are rescued by Javert, who does not recognize Valjean until after he has made good his escape. The Thénardiers daughter, Éponine, who is secretly in love with the student Marius, reluctantly agrees to help him find Cosette, with whom he has fallen in love. At a political meeting in a small café, a group of idealistic students prepare for the revolution they are sure will erupt on the death of General Lamarque. When Gavroche brings news of the General s death, the students, led by Enjolras, stream out into the streets to whip up popular support. Only Marius is distracted by the thoughts of the mysterious Cosette. Cosette is consumed by thoughts of Marius, with whom she has fallen in love. Valjean realizes that his daughter is changing very quickly but refuses to tell her anything of her past. In spite of her own feelings for Marius, Éponine sadly brings him to Cosette and then prevents an attempt by her father s gang to rob Valjean s house. Valjean, convinced it was Javert who was lurking outside his house, tells Cosette they must prepare to flee the country. On the eve of the revolution, the students and Javert see the situation from their different viewpoints; Cosette and Marius part in despair of ever meeting again; Éponine mourns the loss of Marius; and Valjean looks forward to the security of exile. The Thénardiers, meanwhile, dream of rich pickings underground from the chaos to come. Intermission ACT II PARIS The students prepare to build the barricade. Marius, noticing the Éponine has joined the insurrection, sends her with a letter to Cosette, which is intercepted at the Rue Plumet by Valjean. Éponine decides, despite what he has said to her, to rejoin Marius at the barricade. THE BARRICADES The barricade is built and the revolutionaries defy an army warning that they must give up or die. Gavroche exposes Javert as a police spy. In trying to return to the barricade, Éponine is shot and killed. Valjean arrives at the barricades in search of Marius. He is given the chance to kill Javert, but instead lets him go. THE BATTLE The students settle down for a night on the barricade and, in the quiet of the night, Valjean prays to God to save Marius from the onslaught that is to come. The next day, with ammunition running low, Gavroche runs out to collect more and is shot. The rebels are all killed, including their leader, Enjolras. Valjean escapes into the sewers with the unconscious Marius. After meeting Thénardier, who is robbing the corpses of the rebels, he emerges into the light only to meet Javert once more. He pleads for time to deliver the young man to a hospital. Javert decides to let him go and, his unbending principles of justices having been shattered by Valjean s own mercy, he kills himself by throwing himself into the swollen River Seine. A number of Parisian women come to terms with the failed insurrection and its victims. Unaware of the identity of his rescuer, Marius recovers in Cosette s care. THE WEDDING Valjean confesses the truth of his past to Marius and insists that after the young couple are married, he must go away rather than taint the sanctity and safety of their union. At Marius and Cosette s wedding, the Thenardiers try to blackmail Marius. Thénardier says Cosette s father is a murderer and, as proof, produces a ring, which he stole from the corpse in the sewers the night the barricades fell. It is Marius own ring, and he realizes it was Valjean who rescued him that night. EPILOGUE Marius and Cosette go to Valjean, where Cosette learns for the first time of her own history before the old man dies, joining the spirits of Fantine, Éponine, and all those who died on the barricades. 9

This is the first show James is a part of, and he s sad that it s his only one. Two years ago, James was privileged enough to travel across Europe performing advanced literature as a member of Oregon Ambassadors of Music, helping represent the musical talent within the state. After graduating, James will be attending Oregon State University as a music student, double majoring in music and education with plans to teach choir at the middle or high school level. Kyle Arbuckle (Montparnasse) Andrew Barrango (Conferyac) is a senior who is in his first musical this year. He has been in choir BIOGRAPHIES for a very short time, however has shown a lot of promise. He, after a lot hard work, made it into Crimsonaires this year. He is a talented guitarist and singer, and hopes to do a lot with these talents. He has been playing guitar for about 2 years and recently has taken an interest in classical style. He is looking forward to the rest of this year and also to college. He is hoping to double major in accounting and in music at a college on the west coast. He is someone who loves to sing and always has one song or another running through his head. He has been singing to the car radio all his life and doesn t plan on stopping any time soon. Ainsley Bigelow (Young Cosette) is a 6th grader at Hazelbrook Middle School. Ainsley enjoys singing and is having a good time playing little Cosette. This is her first time being in a musical and is looking forward to being in more musicals. While not on stage, Ainsley enjoys cheerleading and playing the piano. Mary Grace Bywater (Girl #2) 12 Chantal Chalumeau (Stage Manager) is working on her 3rd musical. She participated in Beauty and the Beast, Grease, and now Les Miserables. Les Mis is her favorite musical she has worked on because of how much she has been involved with the production this year. Besides working on musicals, Chantal has done work on numerous school plays including Arsenic and Old Lace, A Midsummer Night s Dream, and The Crucible. She is an officer for National Art Honor Society and Thespian Troupe She would like to thank Dan Murphy and Mrs. Kroeger for giving her a chance to stage manage Les Miserables her senior year. Miki Chong (Chorus) had her first performance in The Three Piggy Opera in her Kindergarten year. After all these years, she is now a senior and performing in her last musical, Les Miserables. Throughout her school years, musical performance has been a major part of her life: from an early age performing on cello in Orchestra, singing in Concert Choir, and taking part in school musicals. She would like to give a huge thanks to her family, especially to her mother, Peggy

13 Chong, who taught her about music. She would also like to thank Daniel Jansen, her best friend who has always been there for support and encouragement. Emily Deering (Chorus) is a senior this year. Les Miserables is the third musical she has participated in. She was also a member of the chorus for Beauty and the Beast and Grease. Emily has been involved in the choir program at Tualatin High School for 4 years and is currently singing with the Crimsonnaires. Emily began singing with the choir at Rolling Hills Church at the age of 5. She later spent 3 years singing with the Oregon Reparatory Singers Preparatory Choir. Singing has always brought her great joy and she enjoys sharing her love of music with others. She would like to thank Mrs. Kroeger, Dan Murphy and her mom. Without them she wouldn t be where she is today. Justin King (Babet) sings bass/ baritone and is playing several roles. He is a senior this year. Since he started school, he has continuously sung in the choirs. He was a member of the Salem All-City Middle BIOGRAPHIES, cont School Honors Choir for 2 years, sang and danced in Once Upon An Island, and competed with his Jazz Choir at Mt Hood Community College, where they won 2nd place. He was in last year s production of Grease, is a Thespian, and performs in Tualatin s various plays. This year, Justin is in Concert Choir, Crimsonnaires, and the Tenor/Bass Choir. And if that isn t enough, he spends most of his non-school time singing while he s doing everything else. He is planning to continue his love of music and theater as his major in college. Annie Kornberg (Fantine) is in her fourth musical production. She has played many chorus poarts, including a giant goblet in Beauty and the Beast, and a factory worker in Pajama Game. Annie has a passion for musicals. When Annie was younger, she could not stop singing. She would sit in her car belting out The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow!, which earned her the family nickname the tiny jukebox. Annie s acting career started with an eightyear-old rendition of Tristan and Isolde, where the actor s feet were the characters. Annie has her foot painted as Isolde, laid on a table, and recited lines from underneath a sheet. Annie plans to study Elementary Education in college and go on to join Teachers for America or a similar organization. 13 Mitch Matthews (Gavroche) is an 8th Grader this year. Les Miserables is his second performance, and he plans there to be more opportunities in the future to act and sing. He thanks his mom Beth, his sister Kayla, and his girlfriend Carolina as well as all of his friends for being there every step of the way since the beginning of junior year.
