3 1. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE DYNASTY DANCE TEAM? The purpose of the Monarch Dance Team is to show and promote school spirit for the various school sports and activities on campus as well as within the community. To promote a positive and safe environment where leadership and work ethics are enhanced in every dance member. The Monarch Dance Team has gained much recognition from the students, faculty and staff and is now officially apart of the Athletic Department family. 2. WHAT IS EXPECTED OF A DYNASTY DANCER? A Dynasty dancer not only represents herself/himself but must also keep in mind they represent the University, Athletic Department, and the team, therefore Dynasty Dancers are expected to present themselves in a professional manner at all times. As a member of the Dynasty Dance Team a HUGE time & effort commitment is required of every member. Each member is required to: 1. Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA per semester. 2. Practice two days or sometimes three days a week. 3. Required to workout with the Head Conditioning and Strength Coach 3 days a week. 4. All freshman and upper classmen that have below a 2.5 GPA must attend study hall (minimum 6 hours a week). 5. Perform at all football games and basketball games (Monarch & Lady Monarch). In addition must travel to CAA Tournaments as well as NCAA Tournaments (Holiday Games are Mandatory). 6. Perform and/or support other University sporting events, Pep Rallies, Community Service appearances, etc. 3. WHAT STYLES OF DANCE DOES THE DANCE TEAM EXECUTE? The styles of dance that the Monarch Dance Team performs for various events on and off campus are Jazz, Hip-Hop, Pom, Lyrical, and Jazz/Modern. 4. DOES THE DANCE TEAM COMPETE AND/OR TRAVEL? When the Monarch Dance Team was under the Office of Student Activities & Leadership the dance team did compete with the National Dance Alliance (NDA) and Tremaine Convention/Competitions and has won various awards. Currently, the Monarch Dance Team is under the Athletic Department and does not compete nationally however the team does attend dance camp every summer hosted by Universal Dance Association (UDA) and competes with other Colleges and Universities attending these camps. In addition, it is Mandatory for the dance team members to travel and attend during the CAA and NCAA Tournaments. 5. DOES THE DANCE TEAM OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS?

4 The Monarch Dance Team does not offer scholarships, however semester stipends are given to select members. Selection may be decided upon by year(s) on the team, GPA, and enthusiasm and commitment to the team. 6. DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE DANCE EXPERIENCE? Although it is not required to have dance experience to audition for the dance team, dance experience is very important and may help to gain a position on the team. The dance team is a technically trained team in which all dancers have had previous ballet and jazz training. We strongly encourage interested candidates (current ODU students, incoming freshman and transfer students) auditioning for the dance team to attend the tryout clinics that the dance team offers first and second semesters prior to tryouts. In addition, every summer the dance team holds the Dynasty Dance Camp at ODU which will help prepare candidates interested in auditioning in the Fall. **Please take advantage of these resources** 7. WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE TO TRYOUT? Any Old Dominion University student is eligible to audition or graduating high school senior and transfer students (must mail in a copy of your admission letter with the tryout forms), accepted to Old Dominion University. If under the age of eighteen a parental or guardian permission form will need to be completed prior to or on the first day of Tryouts before the clinic officially starts (located on the Audition/Liability Form). Each individual must have a GPA of at least 2.0 and must be enrolled as a full-time student. 8. ARE THERE SPECIFIC TECHNICAL ELEMENTS THAT ARE REQUIRED FOR TRYOUTS? Each dancer auditioning will be required to demonstrate (may be subject to change): 1.Toe-touch (Russian) 2. Triple Pirouette 3. Pique/Fouette Combination 4. Axle Turns 5. Switch leaps 6. Side leaps 1. WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT MAIL THE FORMS BY THE DUE DATE FOR TRYOUTS? If the required forms are not mailed by the due date you can bring ALL four or five forms, (completely filled out) to the tryouts at the beginning. Please hand all forms to the Head Coach for her review.

5 2. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO BRING AND WEAR TO THE CLINICS? During the dance clinics offered in December and March and/or April, please print and fill out the Dance Team Registration Form & the Audition/Liability Form. If under the age of eighteen a parental or guardian permission form will need to be completed prior to the start of the clinic, which is located on the Audition/Liability Form. Please wear comfortable form-fitting dance clothes and bring dance shoes. Bring sneakers and a water bottle and be ready to work! 3. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO BRING AND WEAR DURING THE TRYOUT WEEK? During tryouts make sure you have ALL four forms completed and ready to hand in, if you have not already mailed the required forms in by the due date. Please note, if you are under the age of eighteen a parental or guardian permission form will need to be completed prior to the start of the clinic, which is located on the Audition/Liability Form. Wear a black sports bra and form-fitting jazz pants and or dance shorts. Bring dance shoes, sneakers and a water bottle. No excessive jewelry and baggy clothing will be permitted. On the final day of tryouts the Monarch Dance Team Uniform will be provided for every candidate to wear for the judges.

7 AUDITION/LIABILITY STATEMENT During the Monarch Dance Team Tryouts, if for any reason I will not hold any member of the Monarch Dance Team, The Athletic Department, The Monarch Dance Team Head Coach and/or Assistant Coaches, any Old Dominion University Faculty/Staff Member, or any student of Old Dominion University responsible for any injury that might occur. Factors that may determine acceptance of a member. The dancer s performance during tryouts, scheduling class conflicts, past or present attitude towards Coaches and other dancers, and/or ability to work and get along with other members. *The Monarch Dance Team Head Coach and Assistant Coach make the final decisions about any dancer auditioning. Judges score sheets are confidential! Score sheets will not be shown to any dancer, parent, or anyone other than the Head Coach, Assistant Coach and/or Athletic Department Supervisor.
