1 Introduction PA Toppers is dedicated to technical skill development for female athletes in Prince Albert and area. We serve approximately 135 athletes per year, ages 11 through 18. The philosophy and goal of this club is to aid athletes in attaining the highest level of volleyball skill through training, teamwork and dedication. Toppers will provide an atmosphere that reflects good values and teach lifelong skills through sport. The club is run completely by volunteers. The number of teams formed is dependent on the number of coaches that volunteer their time as well as the number of players that tryout for the various teams. The benefit of joining the club, in addition to improving your volleyball skills, is to meet new friends from other schools and towns. Toppers Committee Cheryl Mullner Director Randy Emmerson Deputy Director Wendy Hoffman Finance Pam Grassick Registration Nancy Wagar Coach Development Website: Address: (this will send to all)

2 History The Toppers Volleyball club was started in 1982 by school teacher Howard Gange who wanted to better develop the high school volleyball program. The club started out with 1 Midget team and grew over the years to at one point consist of 13 teams in the Bantam (14 & under), Midget (16 & under) and Juvenile (18 & under) categories. At one time Toppers included boy's teams, but they have gone on to form their own club. Our program runs from January until the end of April or early May, with tryouts being held in November/December. Our coaches usually hold practices once or twice per week. We operate on an annual budget of approximately $55, All of our coaches and executive members are volunteers but we like to cover the coach's expenses for hotels and meals at tournaments. We are proud to have the Prince Albert Optimists as our club sponsor. The Optimist Creed Promise Yourself To be strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others are you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

3 Toppers Teams Our 13U/14U teams will focus on learning to play the game with an emphasis on skill building and learning to play team volleyball. We make every effort to ensure every girl in this age group makes a team, however we also rely on volunteers to coach and if we don't have enough coaches, we may not be able to place each player on a team. The 13U teams will play triple ball. Our 15U-18U teams will be focused more towards tactics and overall performance of the game. Teams are selected as follows: En Fuego will consist of the top twelve high performing athletes who will practice 2-3 times per week, which includes strength and conditioning training as determined by their coach. Teams will practice from January to April/May and will attend a number of out of town tournaments, Provincials and possibly Nationals (depending on location). Esprit will consist of the next twelve high performing athletes who will practice 2-3 times per week, including strength and conditioning training as determined by their coach. Teams will practice from January to April and will attend a number of out of town tournaments as well as Provincials. Cascata, Fuerza and Peligro teams will be chosen from the remaining athletes to create a balance of developmental teams. These teams will practice 1-2 times per week from January to April and will attend at least three tournaments during the club season. We make every effort to ensure every girl makes a team, however we also rely on volunteers to coach and if we don't have enough coaches, we may not be able to place each player on a team.

4 Coaching Information All of our Toppers coaches, executive and administrative people are volunteers. Coaching assignments will be determined by the Toppers Executive. Teams with a male head coach may be required to have a female assistant coach or on-bench manager. You will need a clipboard or binder. All Toppers team members are required to sell Optimist raffle tickets. Cheryl will hand these out, you may want to get a parent to handle the distribution and returning of the tickets, or you can do it yourself. Home tournaments will be held for most age groups. If there is not a home tournament for a specific age group, then teams will be entered into the higher age group home tournament. You cannot trade the home tournament for another tournament. If your team cannot attend one of the Sask Cups (due to shortage of players, etc.); you will be able to trade this tournament for another tournament. When you attend Provincials, you need to provide a copy of each player s proof of age (birth certificate or health card). These copies will be handed out to coaches just prior to Provincials. Please remember, this information is CONFIDENTIAL and should be treated as such. Either return the information to the parent, or DESTROY the copy either by shredding or burning. DO NOT throw these copies the garbage!!! If your team wants to attend Nationals your team will be required to cover all costs (entry fee, coach s expenses - travel, hotel, meals). NOTE: if you are coaching a younger age group (15U and under), please ensure you stay with any athletes that are still waiting for a ride after practice!

5 Coaches will receive or be reimbursed for the following: Toppers coaches clothing. Coaches honorarium. See Coaching Honorarium section for details. Coaching certification. A coaches wind up supper meeting at the end of the season. Coaches who have a daughter playing are still required to pay the registration fee. Team Supplies Each team will be supplied with the following: Nine balls, ball bags and ball pump Med kit fully stocked 2018 Volleyball Canada rulebook 2018 Sask Volleyball Program Manual A gym to practice in Team labels for score sheets All team supplies need to be returned at the end of the season. Do NOT leave med kits or balls in your vehicle overnight. The ice packs go bad and the balls go flat!! If you require any refills for your med kit (tape, ice packs, etc.), contact Nancy to make arrangements. The SASK VOLLEYBALL program manual contains important information specific to the age group you are coaching as well as other information you will need to be prepared for the season read it! Team jerseys will be distributed as soon as they arrive, usually mid- January. If you are entering an early tournament (end of January), please contact registration@patoppers.com to ensure your jerseys are done first! Teams usually practice in local school gyms. We will discuss gym requirements at tryouts.

6 Coaching Certifications Toppers will pay upfront for Development coaching certification. Coaches obtaining Advanced Development and higher certification will be reimbursed once they complete all required components. Sask Volleyball aligns itself with Volleyball Canada's coaching requirement standards for all sanctioned club tournaments, Subway Sask Cups, and Conexus Provincial Championships. Head Coaches must be NCCP certified*. 13U 16U: NCCP Development Coach Certified 17U 18U: NCCP Advanced Development Coach Certified For first time coaches in 13-16U age categories, a one year grace period will be granted. This means for your first year of head coaching, you will not be required to be full Development Coach Certified in Volleyball. Please note that this is only good for the first year. By the following year at registration, all coaches will be expected to have completed the certification process for Volleyball. The Head Coach may register with only one team in an age category. All coaches must take Volleyball Canada s on line E-Modules as a prerequisite before you can register for the above In-Person Workshops. E-Modules can be completed at any time and the E- Module registration fee of $79.00 covers Development and Advance Development Coach Modules. New coaches that have not started their Development or Advance Development Coach Certification can register by going to and follow the steps as outlined. Once you have completed the E-Modules, you can register for the In-Person Workshop of your choice. The following workshops are also required to complete your certification: The Multi- Sport Workshop Part A is conducted by the Coaching Association of Saskatchewan check their web site for location and dates. Making Head Way in Sport generic version this is a concussion workshop - Making Ethical Decisions Competition Introduction -

7 Respect In Sport - this is a Sask Sport requirement and does not get recorded in the Locker but all coaches must take RiS. Coaches not fully certified prior to Sask. Provincial Championships will be fined. The amount of the fine will be determined by coach s level of certification. For more information, browse to Indoor Development Technical Workshops: Saskatoon December 9-10 or January Regina December 1-2 or January Indoor Advanced Development Technical Workshops: January 5-7, 2018 in Prince Albert 2018 Part A/B workshops TBD Maintenance of Certification Coaches who are Development Coach "Certified" now receive credit within the Locker database for approved professional development experiences. In order to maintain certification, Development Coaches will need to accrue 20 points over a period of 5 years. For those coaches Certified Level 2 and 3 in the old system - the 5 year clock to accrue points has not yet started. Once these courses have received final approval by the Coaching Association of Canada, the clock will then begin and coaches may receive credit for Professional Development (PD) activities. PD points can be earned through a multitude of activities that coaches already participate in, including: national and provincial sport organization conferences and workshops, elearning modules, NCCP workshops, coach mentorship programs, and active coaching. In most cases coaches are already earning their required PD points -- Maintenance of Certification Status is simply the introduction of tracking these points and recognizing coaches for their efforts. Please contact Nancy for information on how to register and for payment/reimbursement.

8 Coaching Honorariums In 2016, we moved to an honorarium system for coaches expenses. The following will apply for 2018 season: 14U-18U each team will receive $2000 honorarium to be divided between the coaches as they see fit (head coach may receive more, etc.). 13U teams will receive $1500 because they have only two Sask Cups. Executive Honorariums: Director: $500 Deputy Director: $250 Finance: $500 Registration: $500 Coaching/Tournament Coordinator: $500 Defense and Serve Receive Recommendations Offense options 13U age group plays triple ball and has to play a 6/6 offense. 14U age group cannot run a 5/1 offense (one setter). We recommend running a 6/2 offense (two setters, they set when they are back row and hit RS when they are front row); but you can also run a 4/2 offense. 15U and up, we recommend running a 5/1 offense, or a 6/2 offense. Serve receive options - W, cup and three person receive. The option you choose will be determined by the skill level of your team Defense options we recommend using a 6 back defense. Do NOT use a 6 up defense!

9 Coaching Checklist Obtain a copy of all your players registration forms at the end of the last tryout. They contain contact information, any medical issue, possible conflicts with jobs or other sports as well as health card numbers. Review these forms! Be sure to make a parent letter explaining your expectations: Outline all information regarding expectations, practice times, cost, dates/locations, ticket sale expectations, hotels, etc.. (see appendix for an example parent letter). If your team has been selected before the final tryout ends, have a quick meeting with all your players and hand out your parent letter (see appendix for example of team meeting agenda). Team selections will be posted on your team page (patoppers.com). You will need to contact each family via phone/ to let them know practice schedules and parent meeting date/time. If ing, ask for a reply so you know who has received the information. Have a parent meeting at the end of your first practice (last half hour) to discuss the upcoming season, tournaments entered and if you want to go to more than the five you are already registered for, fundraising, team warm-ups, etc.. Record and travel with the players health card numbers, just in case a player is injured and their parents aren t there. Again, this is confidential information so ensure you either DESTROY your copy (shred or burn), or return it to the parent once the season has ended. Keep attendance (practices and tournaments) Plan exhibition games with other Toppers teams. This is a good chance for your parents to learn how to keep score and do lines. You can obtain scoresheets from Nancy. Complaints Any complaints regarding players or parents can be directed to executive@patoppers.com

10 Team Fundraising Each team is welcome to do their own fundraising to pay for entry fees to extra tournaments, team warm-ups, etc. Team fundraising should always be parent-driven (include this in your parent letter) and could include Coop gift cards, steak night, bottle drives. Coaching Resources Toppers coaches will require access to drills and coaching philosophies, there are many resources available on the internet. Sask Volleyball will again be offering a FREE membership to The Art of Coaching Volleyball: Please watch for information regarding new member registrations (for new coaches and those that did not register last year). Toppers volleyball club has its own website at Our website contains the following information: Tryout information Home tournament dates and results Forms (registration forms, entry forms for home tournaments, expense forms, etc.) Each team has its own team page that will be used to post tryout numbers for team selections, coaches contact information and tournament dates and schedules. This is a great resource for parents as well (include in parent letter!). Coaches can post pictures on their team page, send the information to Nancy. Sask Volleyball s website is which lists all sanctioned tournaments for each age group, tournament draws for Sask Cups and Provincials as well as results. If your team wishes to enter any extra tournaments (not already included), you need to collect from your players (or have a parent collect) and enter the tournament yourself. Contact information will be listed on the Sask Volleyball website tournaments page. Insurance/Injuries If a player is injured during a practice, scrimmage or a sanctioned tournament game, please contact Cheryl or Randy. More information regarding our insurance policies are located on SASK VOLLEYBALL s website:

11 Coaching Creed Be a resourceful person able to assist the athlete to develop his/her athletic potential and self-dependency. Recognize individual differences in athletes and always think of the athlete's long-term best interests. Aim for excellence based upon realistic goals and the athlete's growth and development. Lead by example. Teach and practice cooperation, selfdiscipline, respect for officials and opponents and proper attitudes in language, dress and deportment. Make sport challenging and fun. Skills and techniques need not be learned painfully. Be honest and consistent with athletes. They appreciate knowing where they stand. Be prepared to interact with the media, league officials and parents. They too have important roles to play in sport. Coaching involves training by responsible people who are flexible and willing to continually learn and develop. Physical fitness should be a lifelong goal for all Canadians. Encourage athletes to be fit all year, every year and not just for the season. Coaching Code of Ethics Integrity the coach must act with integrity in performing all duties owned to athletes, the sport, other members of the coaching profession, and the public. 17 13 Tryouts Each new season, we create a selection committee to ensure we have a non-biased approach to all selections. The 2018 selection committee will consist of all head coaches in the respective age group as well as Randy Emmerson, Cheryl Mullner and Nancy Wagar. For the 2018 season, tryouts will be run by Dale Regel. He will run the first hour of each session, coaches will have to run the last 30 minutes (session overlap). You may be required to attend more than one tryout, athletes that are born after September in their respective age groups are eligible to play down an age group. At the end of the first tryout, ALL coaches and selection committee in each of these age groups will come up with a list of the top athletes in each age group. The order of team selections will be discussed at the coaches meeting in the fall. We may also need to wait until tryouts so we know how many athletes we have in each age group. Jersey numbers will be required from your team after your first practice, otherwise your team will be assigned numbers randomly. Jerseys can be numbered 1-99! *Athletes that have already played triple ball (or regular), and wish to play regular volleyball will be allowed to play on a 14U team (if they choose). Note: there may not always be teams in all age groups.

14 When are tryouts? Tryouts for the 2018 season will be held on November 26 and December 3, 2017 at Carlton (CPAC and Red gyms) Specific times for each age group are as follows: SUNDAY, NOV. 27 and SUNDAY, DEC 4: Tryout time Year born Gym 10:00am-11:30am 1999* CPAC 11:00am-12:30pm 2004 Red Gym 12:00pm-1:30pm 2002 CPAC 1:00pm-2:30pm 2005 or later Red Gym 2:00pm-3:30pm 2003 CPAC *For 18U teams only, athletes born between September 1, 1999 and December 31, 1999 and are in Grade 12 for the 2017/2018 academic year for the first time are eligible to compete as an Overage Athlete, provided they have not been held back a year at any time during their schooling. For 13-17U teams, each age class will be expanded to include athletes born between September 1 and December 31 of the previous year. For example, athletes born between September 1, 2001 and December 31, 2001 may participate at the 16U age class. What happens after tryouts? ALL TEAM SELECTIONS WILL BE POSTED ON THE WEBSITE! This will avoid disruption having A-team players pulled out of the tryout before they are complete. Respect for ALL players. We can post contact information on your team page, or you will need to contact your players either by or phone (information available on the registration forms) so be sure to have a copy of all your players registration forms before leaving the second tryout! You also need to get your jersey order form with jersey numbers to registration@patoppers.com asap!

15 Appendix Sample Parent Letter Toppers team name Volleyball Team 2018 Congratulations on being selected to the Toppers team name Volleyball team. My goal as a coach this year is to develop and refine your skills, to represent Toppers in both a competitive and sportsmanlike manner and of course to have fun! Ensure you have the proper equipment to play the game. Let your coach know in plenty of time if you will be absent or late. Drugs and alcohol abuse will NOT be tolerated. Cell phones are to be put away during practices and games your main focus should be VOLLEYBALL! Most importantly, bring a positive, respectful, encouraging and dedicated attitude. List practice location and times and any other information required (no shoes, what door to go through, etc.) List tournament dates (as per SASK VOLLEYBALL website). Provide link to Toppers website (patoppers.com) Get copies of proof of age so you are ready for Provincials. You also may want to suggest a team fundraiser (Coop cards, Sobeys cards, bottle drive, steak night, etc..).
