Remembering the Greatest Generation December 7th 2014 marked the 73rd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and America s entry into WWII. The number of survivors of that day and the greatest generation who keep the memory alive are quickly dwindling. Fortunately their offspring continue to keep the memory alive and teach new generations about the significance of Pearl Harbor. Among the sons and daughters of Pearl Harbor survivors are Rick and Bob Miller. We were honored to have them give a Pearl Harbor presentation at our November meeting. Rick and Bob s father, Clarence Miller served in the US Navy and was at Pearl Harbor on December 7th Mr. Miller served on the USS Ramsay, a light minelayer moored at Pearl Harbor the morning of the attack. The Ramsay was moored on the opposite side of Ford Island from battleship row. She was in a position to provide effective antiaircraft fire as Japanese planes climbed out from their attack runs on the battleships. The Ramsay was credited with shooting down one plane during the attack and escaped the attack undamaged. by Tom Reese In 1942 Mr. Miller was transferred to PC 574 a sub chasing patrol craft. After leaving the Navy at the end of the war Mr. Miller like most of his generation went on with life and didn t seek attention for their service to the country. In 1959 the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association was formed. Their mission was dedicated to insuring that this and future generations remain cognizant of the events of December 7, 1941 and that all Americans never are allowed to forget that Enteral vigilance is the price of peace. Their motto was Remember Pearl Harbor - Keep American alert. Mr. Miller joined in the 1970 s and remained a member until his passing in As the number of members of the association decreased Rick and Bob volunteered for board positions that did not require the person to be a survivor. Finally in 2012 the remaining survivors voted to disband the association. Rick and Bob then joined the Sons & Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. After the last offi-

The remembrance this month featured a keynote address by the commander of Great Lakes Naval Station. Their presentation at our November meeting included an impressive number of photos, graphic illustrations, scales models, newspaper articles, and maps depicting both the events of December 7th and their father s service in the Navy. Rick and Bob say that their association with both the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association has been the most gratifying work they ve done and that there was no better way to honor the memory of their father's service to our great nation. Our thanks to Rick and Bob for putting on this great presentation! The most recognized symbol of December 7th 1941 both then and now. The USS Arizona and the USS Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor.

But all the effort was worth the result in the end. Future for my gloss coat & an oil wash are my new favorite techniques! Walt Fink: This is Revell Germany s new F4U-1A Corsair built OOB for a Fine Scale Modeler review. Very sharp! Steve Jahnke: This 2015 Mustang is Revell s snapper kit. Normally I would have photographed this from another angle but the 5/32 aluminum tube that Steve used for the exhaust tips look really cool! Chris Gibson: Chris stepped out of his comfort zone building this 1/35 Cyber Hobby Early Tiger 1. Started a year ago Chris built this out of the box and added just the right amount of weathering. Chris says this is a great kit and highly recommends it.

At right is the USS Arizona which will forever mark our entry into the war. This is the 1/350 Banner kit to which Mike added photo etch details. Mike Kellner: Representing the end of WWII Mike displayed the B-29. This particular aircraft is Academy s re-boxing of the Minicraft/Academy tooling with new decals. Mike did this for an IPMS review. I think it looks mighty nice in OD green! Dave Haas: Here s a neat little kit. A Schneider Canon de 155mm. The kit from Ace has 80 parts believe it or not. Dave painted this French WWI cannon in the colors used by the AEF. Phil Pignataro: Phil continues to expand his collection of 1/72 armor with the Hasegawa Humber MK II. He add wire grab handles and antenna to Hasegawa s kit.

Clockwise from top left; 1/48 F4U- 1A Corsair by Tamiya, a Hobby Boss 1/48 F6F-5 Hellcat, and a 1/72 Hobby Boss Corsair. Very impressive! Art Giovannoni: Any just in case any of those fighter jocks takes a swim a fleet of Kingfishers stands ready to come to the rescue! Phil Pignataro: Making sure we keep an eye towards the future is Phil s White Knight & Space Ship 2. Phil built the Revell kit for a Fine Scale review. Dave Haas: Dave says this is a WIP but it looks pretty complete to me. This 1/700 Dragon USS Arizona was started by Ken Macke and is being given the Dave Haas treatment including anchor chains, fantail awning, blast bags, and the like. Ken would be proud!

Can t wait to see these finished! Tom Reese: The F- 107 is getting closer while the Hawker Sea Fury is just getting started. Larry Johnson: A quick and fun build requiring no paint was this Bandai Bear Guy. William Wallace: A couple of Gundam wing figures were displayed by William. Very colorful!

9 THE REPORTER THE OFFICIAL NEWSLET TER OF IPMS/LAKES REGION SCALE MODELERS PAGE 9 Book Review by Walt Fink Unsung Eagles By LtCol (Ret) Jay A Stout ISBN # MSRP: $32.95 My e-friend Jay Stout has penned another excellent book in his continuing series of nonfiction aviation works. As a former U.S. Marine fighter pilot, Jay is unusually adept at presenting stories by other airmen which put the reader in the cockpit and in the heart of the action. While most books concentrate on the famous aces and names from the fighting men of the Greatest Generation, Unsung Eagles concentrates on twenty-two ordinary men, plucked from society, who rose to greatness when the situations demanded it. By concentrating on the deeds of unheralded and largely unrecognized airmen, the author has written a book with all-new tales which equate---in a way---to seeing previouslyunpublished photographs. In fact, the photos in the book are mostly from the individuals own collections. A wide spectrum of aircraft and services are represented in the book: RAF Hurricanes, USAAC B-24 s, A-26 s, and P-38 s as well as Navy Wildcats, Avengers, and Hellcats are among the ones included. As with all collections of tales, there are elements of humor, disbelief, disappointment, elation, fear, relief, and a thousand other emotions wrapped up in some excellent flying stories---often featuring all of those facets in one chapter or one mission. Jay Stout is a prolific author, and his latest book is a real winner. Highly recommended, and great reading which will take you off the beaten path in lots of the individual stories. I obtained my copy through the Military Book Club for approximately $22.
