Machines in Motion by Emma Owendoff In February, the 6 th grade was assigned one of the biggest projects yet. They had to build their own simple machine using either a lever, a wheel and axle, a pulley, an inclined plane, a wedge, or a screw. The projects were great! One of the machines was the bed making machine designed by Tyler Stivala and Caitlin Zaccardo. The machine consisted of a pulley which pulled the sheets up towards the pillow that made the bed. I think the whole 6 th grade loved it. Bed-making simple machine by Tyler Stivala and Caitlin Zaccardo Did you know that Mr. and Mrs. Begley welcomed a new baby girl on Wednesday, May 30, 2018? They happily welcomed MacKenzie Grace Begley to their family. God bless the Begley family! Page 2 Paw Print

The 2 nd Grade Retreat by Emma Owendoff On April 9 th and 10 th, the 2 nd grade had their First Holy Communion retreat. The 2 nd graders from CCD also participated. They did many activities including: made a cross necklace, watched a last supper movie, bread tasting, a wine tasting, and had a prayer service. During the "wine tasting" they tried different types of juice like apple and grape juice. They were ALL very happy they did it. Run Horsey Run! by Skylar Zolek and Riley McNamee Have you ever met a girl who won a state horse race competition? Let us introduce you to Grace Kreft, she is a 10-year-old girl who had a dream and it came true when she won state Horse Championships. She has been riding since kindergarten. Grace has been riding for six years. Grace is really talented and dedicated to her sport. She did one of her competitions at the American Quarter Horse Regional Championship. Grace was in the thirteen and under division. She has won many medals and she is proud of her accomplishments. Grace has been riding on the same horse. Grace said that when she grows up she would like to be a professional rider. Page 3 Paw Print

Tennis Team by Maebh McCarthy Our school has not had a tennis team in two years, until now. This team includes 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade students. The oldest person on our team is our captain. This year our captain is Bridget Incantalupo. We learned how to keep score at our first practice. The team will have some matches with local schools such as Oak Hill. Everyone works hard to do their best and they still have fun. This is a fun team. The team includes girls and boys. We get along great and play well together. Tennis is a great sport to play and a great way to stay active. Thank You Ms. Lamberti! by Vincent Calvacca Ms. Lamberti was the fifth and sixth grade science teacher. She was a very good teacher and all the kids will miss her very much. She made class really fun. We did a lot of projects. We will miss her very much. However, she is at another good school and she will still pray and remember us in her heart. We now welcome Mrs. Folk who promises to be a great science teacher. Did you know that the JV Boys Baseball won the entire Shore Parochial League? The team was undefeated! Congratulations Lions for another good year! Page 4 Paw Print

CELLS, CELLS, THEY'RE MADE OF ORGANELLES!!! by Aedan Petrocelli This year, the 6 th grade will be doing the Cell Project! They will make either a plant cell or an animal cell out of the materials listed on their rubric. They can use Styrofoam, clay, stickers, foam, and all sorts of materials. Their project is due on April 17, They have a choice to either work alone or work with a partner. They chose who they want to work with, as long as they are working. Part of the project is to label the parts of the cell so that Ms. Folk can tell which organelles are which. The students must also provide a key that states the purpose of the organelle, the name, and the building material they used to make it. Cell yeah!!! Dear Mom by Skylar Zolek and Riley McNamee On May 11, 2018, the 5 th grade class had a Mother s Day service. The day started with Church in the morning. In the beginning, the 5 th graders read from the Sacred Scripture and then the kids sang the closing song Because You Loved Me. After the prayer service the children walked over to the gym with their mothers to have lunch and take pictures. When the day was over, the kids left early with their mothers to spend the rest of the day with each other. Mother s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in The day was traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the goddesses Rhea and Cybele. We hope all the moms had the best Mother s Day!!! Daniel Albano s animal cell model The AAC is set up for the Mother s Day Luncheon after the Prayer Service Page 5 Paw Print

Computer Club by Paige McManus Have you ever worked your brain on puzzles and tricks? Well, if you like them, computer club is for you. Students meet every Monday in the Computer Lab and work on puzzles and brain teasers. These brain teasers and games help you to work out strategies and are very good for your brain. You can also play games and do tests on the computers, which is not only good for you, but is fun! Brady O Connor and Tyler Stivala take part in brain games during Computer Club Save the Rainforest by Paige McManus On Grand Day, the 3 rd grade classes put on the annual Rainforest play. The play was about why you should save the rainforest. They made hats and costumes in art, and made a huge tree out of paper in their classrooms. They each were assigned an animal and a part. The animals ranged from sloths to jaguars to toucans. They also created a PowerPoint on the layers of the rainforest. The students worked in pairs and each created a slide. The grandparents enjoyed the whole event. On Monday, May 7, 2018, the parents were invited to see the play and the PowerPoint. It was a beautiful and interesting presentation. Third grade students getting ready to perform the play Page 6 Paw Print

Principal of the Day! by Isabella Furnari and Juliana Lucas The Principal of the Day this year was Romeo Guida; he was the Principal of our school for the day. He was able to walk around the school and into the classrooms. He did the announcements for the day and went in the office. He said he had a lot of fun. He went around and did an inspection of the lockers. He wrote a letter explaining the locker inspections. At the end of the day he made other announcements before we were dismissed. Grand Day by Anna Martin On Grand Day many of the students grandparents came to our school and visited with their grandchildren. The children were allowed to leave early or stay the rest of the half day. To start off the day, the grandparents went for coffee in the AAC. Next, they came to see the students in whatever classes they were in. The students were allowed to do interviews with their grand friends and play board games. Later, we went to Mass with our grandparents. After all the fun was over the kids were allowed to leave with their grandparents. Grand Day is always fun at Saint Leo s. Next year, remember to bring your grandparents to school with you. Romeo Guida sits at Mr. Begley s desk Grand Day Mass Did you know that the whole school is looking forward to Field Day on June 12, It s outside with bounce houses, smiles, and a lot of fun. 8 Mock Trial by Alexa Koopman The 8 th grade students have been working very hard on the Mock Trial. Every year, the Mock Trial Club gets together and decides on a case to submit. The moderator of the club is the 7 th and 8 th grade science teacher, Mrs. Tommolino. The legal advisor to the club was Mrs. Hanlon. After practicing this case, they presented it to the school. The students in the audience acted as the jury and the club members were up on the stage, acting as if it were a real trial. Presiding at the trial was the lawyer Mr. Noble. The cases this year were The Edge of Success and The Candy Catastrophe. Once they finished the trial, the students had to vote which side was innocent or guilty. In the trial, The Edge of Success, most people voted that the girl was guilty. In the trial, The Candy Catastrophe, most people voted that the mom was guilty. On May 16, these students went to present their case at the New Brunswick Law Center. If you want to be a lawyer when you grow up, you should definitely join the Mock Trial club when you are in 8 th grade. Did you know Students in the Mock Trial club perform one of their two cases onstage in front of their fellow students that the sports teams showed off their skills in the Spring Pep Rally on Thursday, May 24, 2018? The Lions did a great job of performing and all the teams had great seasons. Go Lions! Page 8 Paw Print

Easter Eggs to Dye For! by Riley McNamee and Skylar Zolek On March 26, 2018, the kindergarten children and the 8 th grade students went outside to do an egg hunt. The hunt took place near the basketball court. Also, the Easter Bunny was there! The kindergarteners went looking for eggs with their eighth grade buddies. Every child hopefully found at least one egg. In each egg there was a piece of candy which the children loved. After that they took a class picture with the bunny. When the egg hunt was done they all went to their classes and ate their candy. The Easter Bunny meets with the Kindergarten students A Fun-Filled Day by Maebh McCarthy On Thursday, May 31, 2018, there was a fun-filled day, the Kindergarten Picnic! They had their picnic on the fields behind the basketball courts. The kindergarten children did lots of fun things, including games, crafts, and water balloon tosses. They were even visited by a magician, Magic Mike! He made balloons for the kids in different shapes. They got to sit under a shady tree to rest their weary bodies and laugh at the magician. The kids had Goldfish for a snack. They also had lunch outside followed by ice pops for a treat! They created marvelous memories that will last a lifetime. Everyone will remember the fun picnic that they had in their kindergarten year. Sharks in the Fourth Grade by Alexa Koopman The fourth grade has been learning about sharks in Mrs. Berman s science class. Since they are learning about sharks, she decided to give them a project. The project was to bring in materials and build a shark. Some of the students felt that this was a very hard project. Others thought that it was a fun project. Some of the materials included cups, rubber bands, tinfoil, and foam. This required a lot of thinking and brainstorming. Another requirement during this project was that their shark had to have a tail and a fin. Their shark couldn t sink, but the fin was the only thing that could be showing and sticking out of the water. Overall, this was a very fun project for fourth grade. Page 9 Paw Print

2 nd Grade Quotes! by Isabella Furnari and Juliana Lucas The 2 nd grade hung up quotes all around the school. The meaning behind it was to spread kindness and to spread God s love to others. The second grade also made things that they loved into a drawing. They made a self-portrait and added what they love to do. They are able to inspire others around the school through the quotes they scattered around the halls. We can spread kindness by being kind to others and spreading God s love. Hopefully, by the end of the year, we will be able to spread kindness to others in and outside of school! Did you know A second grade quote that was hung in the hall that Kindergarten is going to Allaire State Park on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, Preschool is going to Dairy Queen on May 4, 2018, 8th grade is going to Liberty Lake on May 23, 2018, and 1st grade is going to the Crayola Factory on Monday, May 21, 2018? 11 Puppy Rescue Day!!! by Aedan Petrocelli On May 9, 2018, 7 th grade is helping an organization called The Puppy Rescue Mission. The Puppy Rescue Mission is about saving puppies that are lost in a warzone and have no one to care about them. The president of The Puppy Rescue Mission is Anna Cannan. She originally created PRM (Puppy Rescue Mission) in 2010 to raise money to help rescue "THE LUCKY SEVEN" out of Afghanistan where her fiancé was deployed. They do this for soldiers who wish they had their furry little friends safe in the USA. If you want to donate, you can mail checks to The Puppy Rescue Mission, PO Box 1516, Celina, TX Please donate and help these puppies and these soldiers. DO IT FOR THE PUPPIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 12 350? 100? 150? by Alexa Koopman Get your thinking caps on because the third grade is doing their jelly bean contest. They fill up a big jar with jelly beans and you have to guess how many are in the jar. The story that the third graders read was Beatrice s Goat. In this story, a girl is poor and she has always wanted to go to school. Heifer International made that dream come true because they gave her a goat. With this goat she could make money. After our third graders read that true story, they do a jelly bean contest every year. They donate the money to Heifer International to help kids like Beatrice. The winner will receive a chocolate basket from Suzi s Sweet Shoppe, a pass to Monster Golf, and another pass to Sky Zone. Please help the third graders to complete their Lenten Project by buying chances. The prices are 1 ticket for $1 and 3 tickets for $2. Fourth grader Conor Andree won the jelly bean contest with a guess of 1,569 jelly beans. The third grade jellybean jar that is used in the raffle Page 12 Paw Print

Sweet, Sweet Pi(e) by Emma Owendoff On Wednesday, March 14, was Pi(e) Day. Pi(e) Day honors the mathematical constant that we use in our middle school geometry. Even though Pi(e) is a mystery to all, it is a fun thing to celebrate. Pi(e) Day is celebrated by mathematicians and scientists, and the public! On Pi(e) Day the cafeteria sold 4 different flavors of pie: pumpkin, apple, cookie, and chocolate cream pie. In all, 316 people ordered pie. The cookie pie was the favorite pie of all. To celebrate Pi(e), the Student Council made posters and hung them around the school to let everyone know...it's PI(E) DAY! Three of the four types of pie that were offered on Pi Day Did you know From left to right: chocolate chip cookie pie, pumpkin pie, chocolate cream pie that March 14 is known as Pi Day because it symbolizes the first three digits of pi, The students celebrated this day by eating pie in the cafeteria at lunch. Mrs. Robustelli, our school librarian, works very hard to coordinate this event. It is open to grades K to 8. There are many varieties of books. When you re done shopping you can buy a bookmark or poster. The Saint Leo s Book Fair in the school cafeteria Thank you to the entire Paw Print Staff!
