A valued member of the Trinity Family from , Sylvan has been busy in the interim running her own very successful dance school in County Mayo, the Sylvan Kelly School with her sister Shakira and highly-qualified staff. The Sylvan Kelly School has won countless World Championship titles in both solo and ceili dancing, and Sylvan herself is regarded as one of the foremost choreographers in the world of competitive Irish dance today. We are delighted to have them back! The dates for the Summer Workshops, both Core and Accelerated, are still being finalized, but we are asking families to hold the week of July 11th-21st for our inaugural Sylvan & Shakira Kelly Workshop! 3 Dear Parents, Trinity s 2nd Annual Black-Out In preparation for the upcoming Lavin-Cassidy Black-Out Feis (March 3rd), as well as other themed feiseanna in our region, we will be hosting a Black-Out week IN ALL CLAS- SES, February 26th-March 2nd (WI Accel/Plus on Wednesday 3/1 IL Accel/Plus on Thursday 3/2). Dancers should come to class dressed exactly how they would for a Black-Out Feis or Special (Hair Included!). Trinity s guidelines for the theme are listed below. To be clear, we do not want to burden our families by having you purchase any clothes for your dancer that you would not otherwise for the feis, or for everyday wear. Due to the increasing popularity of these competitions, it is recommended that the dancers maintain suitable apparel to compete in, but none of it should be expensive or outside the dancer s ordinary scope of clothing. While we are asking ALL DANCERS (except Pre-Beginners) to participate in our Black-Out Theme Week, regardless of whether they are planning to compete at the upcoming Lavin-Cassidy Feis, we understand that not everyone plans to ever participate in one of these themed competitions. If your dancer is not planning on competing at the Black-Out Feis, we ask that you do your best to adhere to our guidelines for this class but we realize that you may not be 100% in line (i.e. black shorts with white piping, black shirts with small logos or designs, etc.) Just do your best and have fun with it! BLACK-OUT GUIDELINES FOR GIRLS: BLACK SKIRT/SKORT OR SHORTS Skirt/skort or shorts should be matte black cotton or cotton blend. No shiny lycra or sequins, no tutus. (If you wear the Trinity Kilt skirt, you can pin the competitor number over the sequin buckles--it works fine) Skirt/skort or shorts should be short but modest (about mid-thigh) and skirts need to be worn with black spankies. For older girls (U13 & up), the popular Lululemon skirt does not work! Judges have indicated it is too short. Please find a different dance skirt to wear for feiseanna. BLACK SHIRT/BODYSUIT Short or long sleeves are fine, NO TANK TOPS. Plain, matte black cotton or cotton blend, no shiny lycra or other embellishments. Crewneck or turtleneck preferred, no v-neck or deep scoop-neck please. NO WIG Hair should be pulled back neatly in a ponytail, bun, or braid unless too short. Short hair should be neatly secured away from the face with a bow or clip. Plain black bows may be worn, no embellishments. POODLE SOCKS Socks should be glued below the calf, no knee socks! BLACK-OUT GUIDELINES FOR BOYS: BLACK PANTS OR SHORTS Pants or shorts should be plain, matte black. No shiny lycra and no stripes or designs. No baggy track pants. Shorts should be knee length and tidy. BLACK SHIRT Short or long sleeves are fine. NO TANK TOPS. Plain, matte black cotton or cotton blend, no shiny lycra or other embellishments. ACCELERATED SERIES All ages and levels are required to tryout for Team Trinity. CORE SERIES (The below age groups are as of January 1 st, 2017). PRE-BEGINNER: Dancers at this age and level would naturally not yet possess the skills necessary for this level of team dancing. Please look forward to this opportunity in the future! BEGINNER: Dancers at this level are still very new to the skill set necessary for this level of team dancing, however there may be a handful of students that teachers feel are able at this time. Y ou have to be invited by your teacher in order to tryout. BEGINNER 2: Any dancer U13 and younger is eligible to tryout. NOVICE/PRIZEWINNER/PC: Any dancer U13 and younger is eligible to tryout. U14 and older are eligible to tryout if you were on a 2016 Oireachtas team, or by invitation from your weekly teacher. 4

5 GALLWAY RACES Anne Bloom was not only a very talented World Champion dancer, featured in this story, she also leads our Trinity Teams to victory in numerous competitions. Anne s teams have never come home without a gold medal! She will now be taking a choreography to Compete in the 2017 World Championships in Dublin! This story isn't remembered because the team won, but as a reminder of what team trinity is all about-the bonds we make here at Trinity. Galway Races is a four-part narrative about 48 hours during the 1994 World Irish Dance Championships when all seemed lost for Trinity Academy of Irish Dance s Under 13 Figure Choreography team. Central to the story is Trinity Associate Director Anne McCarthy, who is now coaching Trinity s Under 13 Figure Choreography team bound for the 2014 World Irish Dance Championships in London, and Trinity Instructor Katie Hughes whose spirit and dedication during the 1994 competition, and beyond, inspired an annual award for Trinity dancers. The current team will compete on April 15 this year, two decades after Anne and Katie took to the world stage themselves for the same competition under the direction of a young coach, now Trinity s Anne McCarthy takes a moment to pose for her proud father, Dan McCarthy, before her solo competition at the 1994 World Irish Dance Championships in Dublin. Part One: Chasing Gold In the damp, cold hours of a Dublin morning, Anne McCarthy wakes before sunrise. First, she must deal with her hair, always the hair. At 12, Anne has traveled to Ireland for the World Irish Dance Championships with her father, Dan, who is a passionate booster of all things Irish, particularly his daughter s school, the Trinity Academy of Irish Dance. But a hair stylist he is not. Just before 6 a.m. on this Sunday in April 1994, Anne steps out of her room and meets a Trinity mom who carefully unrolls 120 pink sponge curlers from Anne s long, thick brown hair, then separates each curl into two or three more tight ringlets. Within a few hours, Anne will dance in her first solo competition on the world stage! While her stomach is aflutter with butterflies, Anne is even more excited about the next day s competitions. Monday will start with a Ceili, an eighthand traditional folk dance of uniformity and precision that has been passed on for generations of Irish the way other cultures teach their young to toss pizza dough or skip across a high beam. No American team ever has come close to winning the Ceili competition. In fact, the notion that an American team could place in this category or most others in 1994 is considered so far-fetched by European hosts at this time that the Irish Dance Commission still awards an Overseas Award for non-european dancers and teams. The consolation prize is a nod to their effort, if not their skill. Anne likes the Ceili but she knows that she and her teammates have a better chance of wowing the judges later tomorrow night with their innovative figure choreography dance, called Galway Races. The choreography begins with dancers standing in two straight drill lines, a dramatic variation from the traditional half circle or horizontal lines of most choreography. The dancers then leap out in pairs, like horses shooting out of the starting gate. They move on to a series of complex patterns requiring extraordinary swiftness and no room for error. For Anne, such team dances capture the soul of a shy girl who gradually has become more social and outgoing through Irish dance. She loves working toward a common goal, enjoys those fleeting moments on the dance floor when she faces one of her teammates now all of whom are friends and they make eye contact. The choreography team is comprised of the best 11- year-old and 12-year-old dancers from Trinity, and it puts Anne, from the Milwaukee suburb of Wauwatosa, together with dancers from Chicago, including that fun, wisp of a South-side girl, Katie Hughes. Katie, the youngest of four, laughs and jokes easily, but Anne mostly knows her as the best Trinity dancer of her age group. Katie is the daughter of a Chicago Police Officer and lives near Midway Airport. She shows up early to practices, stays late, and often earns the top spot on the podium at feiseanna. Anne and her teammates know they ll each need to take on Katie s work ethic and drive if they are to have any chance at beating their peers from the British Isles. Trinity Head Coach and Choreographer Mark Howard wants nothing more than to triumph over his ancestors children on the dance floor. He already has tasted victory, with Trinity winning several World medals for team dances, including the first two golds for the United States in the Drama Category in 1987 and The team runs through Galway Races in a hotel hall in Dublin days before the competition.
