November 2017 FSU Facilities Features Employee Recognition Facilities First A Word From Our Sr. Associate Vice President It s been awhile since my last Facilities First article. Sorry about that. Safety First Design & Construction Update Master Craftsman Information & Reminders As you all know, we re more than half way through the fall semester, and things are so busy. That s a good thing, however. The football team started with high hopes of being a national championship contender. That s all I ll say about that. If you don t already know how the season has been going, you don t want to find out about it here. The campus looks very good! We have opened the last two new residence halls along Jefferson St. along with the new food venue If you ve not tried the food there, you need to do so. It s different and it s very good. We have finished the south end zone scoreboard project, and we ve revamped and rebuilt Langford Green. Again, if you ve not had the opportunity to look at these new additions, please do so. We will dedicate the new Labyrinth located between the College of Medicine and the Psychology Department on November 2 nd. If you ve never seen a labyrinth or if you don t know what one is, please visit. I promise you will be amazed. Parents Weekend is this coming weekend, and Homecoming will be here in a couple weeks. I am writing this on Halloween. The fall is moving fast, and the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season will be upon us before we know it. I hope you re having a great fall, and I hope 2017 has been good to you. Inside this issue: A Word from our Sr. AVP, p.1 Safety First, p.2 Smith Hall Demolition, p.3 Master Craftsman, p. 4 Information & Reminders, p.5 Reminders & Employee Recognition, p.6 Thank you for all you do for Facilities and for FSU! Dennis Bailey, Sr. Associate Vice President for Facilities

Page 2 FSU Facilities Ladder Safety We have all worked with ladders at some time in our lives, either at work or at home. The following are some tips that may make your interaction with ladders less hazardous: Before using a ladder, inspect it for faults, such as broken rungs or rails. If it is an extension ladder, inspect the pulleys, ropes and locks for excessive wear. Also, check the footings and pads to make sure they still provide a non-skid surface. If any defect is found, the ladder should be tagged unsafe and taken out of service. If it cannot be fixed, make sure it is disposed of properly. When setting up a ladder, make sure the ground it is set upon is level and stable. Do not set the ladder up on a muddy surface or you may find yourself falling over. Do not use bricks or other material to raise the height of the ladder. If it is not tall enough, you are using the wrong ladder. The ladder should reach a minimum of three feet above the "point of support" and should be secured at this point. When using extension ladders, abide by the 1:4 rule. This means if you are using a 12 foot ladder, the base should be three feet from the structure. Some ladders provide a picture guide on the ladder itself to assist you in this. When using a stepladder, make sure the folding cross braces are locked in the proper position before you step onto it. Always face the ladder when ascending or descending, and have both hands free to grasp it securely. If you need tools, they should be carried in a tool belt or pulled up with a rope once you have reached your destination. Remember the "3-Point Rule": At least two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand, should be in contact with the ladder at all times. Keep your body between the side rails of the ladder. This reduces the chance of tipping it over and/or falling off. Do not climb higher than the third rung from the top on straight or extension ladders or the second tread from the top on stepladders. By following the above rules, you greatly reduce your chances of being injured while working on ladders. Remember, the life you save will be your own! Fall Protection Training a Success May was National Stand Down to Falls month. On May 16 th and 17 th a fall protection class was held at the Grainger store on campus. The training was conducted by Honeywell Industrial Safety. Both days saw a good turnout of FSU employees. Training included a demonstration of lanyards as well as how to properly wear a harness. There was a lot of good information presented in regards to fall protection. Environmental Health & Safety plans to arrange more of these trainings in the future. Thank you to Honeywell and Grainger for hosting the training. Thank you also to all employees who attended the training. If you have questions regarding fall protection equipment, please contact Jason Marconnet with EH&S at Marvin Simmons, Zone 2 supervisor, demonstrates how to properly don a harness.

FSU Facilities Design & Construction Update - Smith Hall Demolition As many of you have noticed, Smith Hall has been demolished to make way for future growth of the NW quadrant of the main campus. The demolition was executed by Cook Brothers Inc., as the Construction Manager and Crowder as the Demolition Contractor. The Project completed on schedule and work performed has been done professionally and coordinated properly. FSU Facilities appreciates the cooperation for those affected, and hopes to finish strong and have the site opened back up towards the end of this year. FSU PM: Justin Shafer CM: Cook Brothers Inc. DC: Crowder

Page 4 Master Craftsman Studio Master Craftsman Studio was honored to have had the opportunity to work closely with President Emeritus Talbot Sandy D Alemberte and Patsy Palmer to design and fabricate this spectacular 35 x 101 stained glass window in honor of Sandy, dedicated on Monday, October 2, 2017 in the FSU Heritage Museum, Dodd Hall. This piece incorporates multiple glass processes, including traditional leading, as well as kiln forming, hand staining, and cast glass techniques. The four pendant pieces highlight specific parts of Sandy s career which he identified as most meaningful for him, and are set in the same blue glass field as the side windows in the museum. They include his family home which was located directly west of the capitol, and was Sandy s birthplace. The Florida Capitol, where he served in the House of Representatives from , the FSU Law School, where he served as Dean from and continues to serves as a professor, and The FSU Medical School which was established in 2000 as one of his many contributions to the advancement of the University. Sandy s portrait was hand painted in vitreous enamels, and a detail of Westcott is seen in the background, as if reflected from the original window at the head of the room. The architectural details indicate both the architecture of the room as well as reference the façade of Dodd Hall. Sandy was pleased to learn that several students had the opportunity to work on this piece, as experiential learning was his vision for Master Craftsman Studio, which he established in 2000.

Page 5 November 2017 Information and Reminders FSU United Way Campaign Last year, I had the pleasure of assisting Kim Ball with coordinating Facilities involvement in the campaign. This year, I will be assisting her again. Kim has been representing Facilities by coordinating our portion of the campaign for many years. Together, we are here to assist with collecting your donations, completing forms, or answering questions. Again we will try to share information about some of the important programs supported by United Way and the statistics which show how even a small contribution can make a really large difference. Over the years, Facilities has been very generous to this campaign. Throughout the region in fiscal year 2016, United Way of the Big Bend provided the following: 10,371 Persons received Basic Needs & Emergency Services (food, clothing, shelter, etc.) 132,345 pounds of food or 105,876 meals were provided in Leon County 47,051 Persons Received Health Care Services $2.2 million was the amount UWBB invested in Human and Health Services in Leon County Over the next few days, you will be receiving your contribution form. If you choose to make a contribution, please complete the form and return it to your department admin or you may bring it to Angela Crawford in MMA 116C. If you have any questions, please contact Angela Crawford at FSU Veterans Appreciation Walk is Nov. 8th!
