1 Vol. 5 Issue 2 February 2008 We meets the first Thursday of the month at Beth Sholom, 1050 S. Tuttle Ave. Sarasota FL Workshop at 6:00 pm. Officers meeting 6:30 pm. General meeting and presentation 7:00 pm. Visit our Web Site at We are fortunate to have the sitting International President of IBM, Phil Willmarth, in town for a few days. Phil Willmarth will be in the Sarasota -Siesta Key area for the next few days and he has contacted us to see if he could meet some of our members while he is in town. We have made arraignments for President Willmarth to be at Bennigans this coming Tuesday evening at 7 PM. To fellowship and teach. We have the entire back top section of the restaurant reserved from 5 PM on. Phil should be there between 6:30 and 7:00. Although it is a last minute decision, I didn't want to pass up this opportunity for our members to meet the International President. Phil has recently been on tour representing the IBM in such places as India, Malaysia and Hong Kong. I'm sure that this will be a memorable evening filled with some fascinating stories, not to mention that Phil will put on a lecture to boot! I hope you all can attend. 2 Magic Workshop Bill Bremner Coordinator Bring your favorite marked or gaffed deck. It may be hard to see but this is a marked deck. It happens to be the QH We are looking to finalize a presenter for the March 6th meeting. We will keep you informed of further developments. Let your Board know who you would like to see and they will attempt to book that performer From the President My fellow magicians I want to take this opportunity to make sure that everyone is aware of the recent changes to the Board of Directors for the Club. Approximately one week after taking office Dave Downer decided to resign his position as President of Ring 81. After talking amongst ourselves and getting input from previous Board members and Past Presidents, the balance of The Board members met; and, in accordance with our bylaws, appointed a new President. I am happy and pleased to announce that I, Bill Smith, am your new President. Jim Levell is now the Vice President and Bud Hedger will remain in the Treasurer position. We will be hoping to fill the position of Secretary as soon as possible. The Board in place now is optimistic and excited to get going. We have some ideas that we hope will bring more focus the common good of the Club. One of our goals is to get everyone in the Club involved. We want to foster an attitude of sharing our magic and having fun. I realize that this is a Club of many talented and diverse individuals. My hope is to bring out the best of everyone so that we can continue to grow as individuals and as a Club. The Club had many accomplishments last year which will be hard to top. Not the least of which was an amazing Gala at the Glenridge. I will be counting on everyone to help, participate and get involved. We can have a great year this year if we all give it our best. Let s be great in I look forward to serving as President this year, please feel free to contact me, personally, at any time my cell number is Stevie Dee Parties, Conventions, Graduations. 3 MAGICAL REMINISCING With Jim Peterson A MOMENT IN HISTORY There was a moment in the magic history of Sarasota when it all came together. The year was 1977 and the event was the opening of the Magic Moment Restaurant, by Jeff Rosenberg and Chris Moore, on Siesta Key. The Magic Moment was a restaurant with a magic theme, but first it was a topnotch restaurant that specialized in prime rib and live Maine lobster. Reviews of the food in the local newspapers were excellent; so were did the magic come in? First, if you chose Maine Lobster you had to order "Dante's Dream!" Other dishes ranged from "The Zig-Zag" to "Henning's Matrix" to "Keller's Catch." And then before or after your meal professional close-up workers would perform at your table by request. Many of the magic staff, at the Magic Moment, are members of Ring 81 and still perform today. Some names you may know are: Stevie Dee, Paul Cummins, Dan Dygert, Joe Fiorentino, Jonti, Dan Tong and Chris Moore. On the way out, after your meal and night of magical entertainment, there was a small magic shop adjacent to the restaurant where you could buy a Magic Kit or one of the many "Magical Mysteries." You guessed it. The Shop was run by Ed Kaczarek. 14 years after The Magic Moment opened, it's doors closed. That was a sad day in Sarasota history. The well-known Siesta Key restaurant, where waiters popped menus out of silk handkerchiefs and customers ordered such entrees as "Houdini's choice" was gone. Vanished replaced by up to 50 condominiums. Note: In 14 years The Magic Moment grossed $40 million, serviced over 2 million people and had about 2,500 employees who worked there. Because of it's magic theme, the restaurant did "hundreds" of birthday parties every week. Vol. 5 Issue 2 February 2008 Page 3
4 Trick of the Month. Appearing Money From the Practical Encyclopedia of Magic Nicholas Einhorn To perform this trick, you will need to wear a long-sleeved shirt or jacket. Take a banknote and fold it in half, widthwise, down the middle. Fig.1 Carefully roll the note tightly into a cigarette shape, starting at the fold. Fig. 2 Place the rolled up note onto the crook of your left elbow. Fold over the fabric to hide the note and keep it in place. Fig. 3 Show your right hand empty, simulating pulling up your sleeve with your left hand. This looks very natural, and will make your audience less suspicious when you repeat it. Fig.4 Repeat the motion with your left hand. However, as the right hand tugs the sleeve, it secretly grasps the rolled-up note from the crook of your elbow. Fig.5 The exposed vies shows how the left hand creates enough misdirection for this to happen. The right hand secretly retrieves the note, while the audience are focused on making sure that your left hand is empty. Fig.6 Bring both hands in a position in front of you, at about chest level. The rolled-up note is held hidden in the right hand. The top end is pinched between the thumb, first and second fingers. These fingers pull the rest of the note back and out of sight. Fig. 7 From the front, both hands look completely empty. This is a very convincing Illusion. Fig.8 Bring your fingers together and without pausing, use your right thumb to pivot the note into position which allows both hands to grip an edge each. Fig.9 Snap open the note. Fig. 10 Go into routine requiring a bank note. Fig.1 Fig.2 Fig.3 Fig.4 Fig.5 Fig.6 Fig.7 Fig.8 Fig.9 Fig.10 If you change your address or subscribe to a new one, please notify the club secretary. We communicate with the majority of our members this way and want to make sure that you re not left out of the electronic loop. Vol. 5 Issue 2 February 2008 Page 4
