Newsletter of the Robert W. Klamm Assembly 38 / Society of American Magicians February 2010 Vol. 16 No. 2 Upcoming Meetings When We Meet: The Third Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. Where We Meet: The Fairmount Community Center, 217 S Cedar Avenue, Independence, MO Berniece Klamm Honored We had a pretty good turnout for a January meeting. Berniece Klamm received special recognition for her years of service. A drawing was held for members who renewed their dues. First place went Mark Stillwell for free membership dues for Second place went to Steve Steiner getting a member t-shirt, and, lastly, taking third-prize, Randy Denham won a SAM logo mug. A new yearly contest was announced. The contest will include a Stage, Close up and also a People s choice award. The newsletter s monthly quiz was covered and revealed that Thurston in 1920 had taken the heads off of a duck and chicken and switched the heads a variation on the duck decapitation and restored continued on page 2 Don t get to the end of your rope. It wouldn t be funny. As a matter of fact, it would be a tragedy if you were dropped from the KC S.A.M. 38 because you misplaced your dues notice. Dues are due Jan. 1. Please pay soon so your membership doesn t disappear. A year s worth of magic for just $20!
Rivera s Rants... Greetings Illustrious Compeers! I hope you are all having a happy February. It is just two months away from our contest. If you are interested in competing, you ll need to qualify within the next two meetings. It will be a very exciting competition, so make sure you mark you calendars for April 10th. Congratulations to Compeer Stillwell! He won the main prize in the raffle last month. Since he got the first place prize, he was refunded his yearly dues! How cool is that?! Other prizes went to Compeer Steiner who received a free S.A.M. T-shirt, as well as our Illustrious Incantator Randy Denham, who received an S.A.M. coffee mug. (Reminder: S.A.M. T-shirts are only $15, and all proceeds go to the club.) Hopefully you can all make it to our next monthly meeting on the 16th. We will have a special theme for this month. Mardi Gras magic! So, break out those beads! If any of you have any kind of Fat Tuesday/carnival type magic, please feel free to share it with your fellow magi. In addition, since it is the month of love, we will learn the correct way to make one of the greatest give-away items ever the napkin rose. As a bonus, we will also learn the torn and restored napkin rose (Torn and Rose-tored). I will provide specially printed napkins for everyone to learn. To top off the night, Krispy Kreme doughnuts will be enjoyed by all! Unfortunately, local dues need to be renewed. February s newsletter will be your last if you haven t renewed and you won t be able to attend the meetings. So please, continue to support your local S.A.M. Also, technically, you can t be a member of the local club unless you are a member of the National S.A.M. So, I would encourage everyone to join National. As I have said before, ask not what you club can do for you, but what you can do for your club. Finally, if you haven t joined Facebook, you need to! S.A.M. Assembly #38 has a brand new Facebook page. There are already numerous magic videos and dozens of pictures. Anyone can post pictures, videos, comments, and other information on the Facebook site. Go to and check it out. Anyone can join and not only is it easy, but it is free! Keep in mind that since we already had our board meeting for the month, we will not have one on the 16th. That means that we can show up to the meeting and have plenty of time to socialize before the actual meeting starts at 7 p.m. Remember, we have to be out of there at 9 p.m. If you are up for it, we will most likely gather at Denny s or Applebee s after the meeting for more magic and conversation. I hope to see you all on the 16th! Q: In 1886, The Ringling Brothers started their fi rst circus. Harry Houdini was interested in joining the circus. He jumped on a train planning to head to Galveston, TX. Instead, the train took him where? Most Illustrious, Shaun Rivera 2 ~ The Wizard s Sleeve
Berniece Klamm Honored... continued from page 1 acknowledged to Dedi. We ate birthday cake during the break to celebrate another free trip around the sun for Rod Sipe. We had a new segment in spelling of the volunteer s name. Rod Sipe performed a fun version of the Invisible Deck. A rare performance was done as Eddie Pease, performed as he had a deck the meeting on a round table discussion on most favorite tricks of all time and why. Tricks covered were torn and restored card, linking rings, snowstorm in China and coin matrix. Performances were started off by our illustrious Shaun Rivera, who did the 9-Card Problem by Jim Steinmeyer, where the selected card ended at the shuffled deck memorized and able to predict the chosen cards. Mike Melito did a mentalist effect with a freely chosen time revealed on his wristwatch. Phil King did a Tim Sponiza combination deck. Joe Zeman finished the night with a pretty neat linking ropes effect. Faithfully submitted Mike Melito The Wizard s Sleeve ~ 3

Assembly 38 Dues $20/year S.A.M. #38 Meetings Why We Meet At each meeting there is magic and fellowship. We will discuss the business of the club, hear from local magic dealers and see some demonstrations of new magical effects or techniques. Then we get down to the real fun of performing, teaching, and learning effects and techniques. The membership is varied: professionals, semiprofessionals and amateurs joined together by their love for the magical arts. The atmosphere is light and supportive, which is a great place to try out new effects or to perform for the first time. Performance is not mandatory but is encouraged. Besides the monthly meetings other activities include... A Word from the Editor Hey, how did that guy get in the newsletter? Does he know the editor? Actually, he does, but that s beside the point! But how am I going to get myself into the newsletter? That s easy. Send me a good quality, high resolution photo of you performing, and I ll get it into the newsletter. Got a gig coming up that you d like to promote, or let everyone know about a successful gig that you d like to brag about, drop me a note, and remember the Five Ws: who, what, where, when and why. Getting into the newsletter is easy... with a few magical hand gestures on your keyboard. ~ Joe Zeman, Your Faithful Scrivener Bringing in various lecturers on the art of magic. Putting on an annual stage show called The Stars of Magic to raise money for the club. An annual banquet at which we have a nice dinner and see some magic. Occasional special projects like staging a fullblown magic convention called the Klamm Bake which brought in big names like Aldo Columbini, Johnny Ace Palmer, and Daryl to perform and to teach. 4 ~ The Wizard s Sleeve
S.A.M. #38 Web Site F.A.Q. What the Club Web Site Can Do for You Our club web site, Samkc.org, is there for many reasons. First and foremost, it helps to promote our club. It can help bring in new members. It can help us keep in contact with our fellow members. It can help national SAM members to find us when they plan on being in Kansas City. You can even promote your own shows by adding it to the Magic Events list (see below). If you have a magic related business or web site, you can have it added to the Magic Links page. If you have any suggestions on new features you would like to see added to the web site then send an to webmaster@samkc.org with the details. How to Log into the Members Area When you click on the Members Area link, the site asks you for a user name and password. The username is a single word made up of your first initial and last name (eg: Lance Burton s user id would be lburton assuming he was an active member of our local club). Your password is password. Once you log in for the fist time, you can update your profile and change your password to whatever you like. I strongly encourage you to do so. Once you get logged in, you should see a list of all of the clubs currently active members and their contact information. You should also see your name appear below the navigation links on the left side of the page, followed by some new links that you can use to read the club newsletters, update your profile, add current events to our Magic Events page, and get a list of accounts of all of the active members that you can cut and paste right into a new . How to Update Your Profile Log in and click on the Update Profile link. You will see a form that contains all of your contact information, such as address, phone number, address, etc. Please log in to make sure that your information is correct and up-to-date. You can use this page to modify your user name and password. You can even add a link to your own personal web site. How to Add Current Events When you select the Add a New Event link, you are able to fill out a form to add information about an upcoming show or other event that you think would be valuable to other members. Keep in mind that when you submit this form, it does not immediately appear on the sites Magic Events page. It will be automatically sent to a board member for review and approval. This helps prevent false, obscene, and unwanted events from being viewed by the general public. I encourage everyone to use this feature to its fullest. The Wizard s Sleeve ~ 5
