1 Issue Number 27 SPRING 2016 Celebrate Life Go For It Brigitte Theunissen Our theme for the year has focused on CHOICES: Life is an amazing journey and as you embark on this journey of your life - make a choice. Choose to give the world the best you have. It won't always be easy; but do it anyway. Life, your life, is an incredible gift and as an individual you have so much to offer the world and yourself. Don't be caged by your fears - either real or perceived; don't be limited by other people's expectations of you and most importantly don't merely endure this amazing gift of life. Throughout the journey of your life, you will encounter hopes, dreams, challenges, setbacks, new beginnings and the inevitable goodbyes. Yet despite all of this, you must choose to give yourself and the world the best you have. Give the world the best you have by putting yourself out there and living life. Don t merely be spectators. Sure, it may be safer, but nothing compares to living life, rather than merely watching it. Yes, it takes guts and daring and a willingness to take risks, but it'll be so worth it, despite the bumps and scratches and bruises that you are sure to receive along the way. INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Celebrate Life Go For It Pre-Prep: Sunflower Day Pre-Prep: Competition Boys of the Week Gr 0, 1 & 2: Sunflower Day Percussion Evening Gr 4: Soil Experiments Sport: Hockey Sport: WHPS Alicat Deli POP-UP Trailer The Three Musketeers Sunflower WHPS Cherish the amazing relationships in your life and worry less about who may or may not like you. Listen, really listen to others; have empathy and compassion, strive to always build people up, rather than break them down. Stop sweating the small stuff. Dirty footprints on a polished floor, grubby hands marking a crisp linen shirt as they encircle your waist in a hug, bad hair days, less than perfect make-up, expression lines deepening as your face starts to reflect life's experiences. Instead, try to laugh more, love more, forgive often, smile irrepressibly, be spontaneous and at times even impetuous, cry when your heart is breaking and reach out when your heart is overflowing. For it is this that will define your life! It is these qualities that will allow you to give the world the best you have. The people who will make the most difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money or the most awards and recognition. They are the ones who care. So, care enough to give the world the best you have and you will be giving the world a tiny miracle - small... yet hugely significant. 2 Pre-Prep: Sunflower Day Hope begins with you. With the facelift of the bandana, we now celebrate Sunflower Day! It is a day dedicated to creating awareness and handling the registration process for people to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry. The Sunflower Fund pays for the test costs of people joining SABMR. The stories on the Sunflower Fund website from stem cell transplant patients and Leukaemia patients makes one realize that being a donor is life giving. On the 24 th September you are able to join the Sunflower Fund for a fun 5km walk/trot through the Johannesburg Zoo, scheduled to start at Thank you to all our parents and pupils for supporting such a worthy cause! Our photos are evidence that it was a fun day at WHPS! Debbie Hinton / HOD Pre-Prep: Competition Competition details and entry form available on the School Communicator under General in the Resources section. Page 2. WHPS Newsletter, No. 26

4 Percussion Evening at St Mary s DSG Tshepang Letebele On Thursday, 15 September 2016, WHPS participated at the St Mary s DSG Percussion Evening. Crawford College, Southdowns College, and the St Mary s Junior and Senior Marimba Bands also performed. All of the schools performed well. WHPS s item was definitely the showstopper because of the amazing gumboot dance addition. This was the first time that the WHPS Percussion Band have added a dance element to the performance. We really enjoyed the evening ad hope to be invited to more Percussion Evenings in the future. We will be performing again on the 27th of September at the WHPS Music Extravaganza at WHPS. The Extravaganza starts at 18:30. Tshepang Letebele / Gr 7S Gr 4: Soil Experiments Vicky van Noordwyk The Gr 4s have been studying soil and this week they conducted experiments to determine the levels of acidity and alkalinity of the soil at WHPS. They also conducted a chemical reaction experiment using dry ice, water and dishwashing liquid which to the delight of the boys formed foaming gaseous bubbles. Vicky van Noordwyk / Gr 4 Teacher Page 4. WHPS Newsletter, No. 27
5 Sport: Hockey Our hockey teams had a very good round of matches against St Peter s this past weekend. The boys worked hard through the week to improve on certain aspects of the game. The games were played in great spirit and WHPS managed to come out on top in a number of matches. 6 The Three Musketeers The Three Musketeers performed by On-Cue Theatre was enjoyed by our Grade 1-7 Boys at the Waterkloof House Theatre. This modern interpretation of the classical favourite had a lot of interesting aspects to it. Upbeat music, choreographed dancing and multiple scene changes made for a very fun filled production. The boys enjoyed the many strange but funny costumes changes done by the actors. Even some of our teachers found themselves caught up in a scene against their will, but they ultimately gave in and played along to this interactive modern play. We are all left with the Musketeers creed still ringing in our minds: United we stand, divided we fall. All for one and one for all! Nokuzola Gololo / Drama Teacher Sunflower WHPS What a colourful day is was at school on the 16th of September. The WHPS pupils and staff all happily embraced and supported The Sunflower Fund s Sunflower Day. The boys and girls in the pre-prep loved trying on their topes in different ways. The junior and senior prep boys seemed to favour an "armsling" or a "ninja mask". #HopeBeginsWithYou #IAmHope Have a look at the WHPS Facebook page for more photos and videos.
