1 Developing an Initial Understanding 4 th Grade Reading Goal Sheets Character Sleds and Cocoa by Judith Miller One sunny winter morning, Momma said, "Would you like to go sledding today?" I was so excited! We were going to see our neighbor, Mrs. Bixby. She had a big hill behind her barn. I wanted Momma to tow me on my sled behind the car. Daddy sometimes pulled me behind the tractor. Momma said, "The hill is too far. The car goes faster than the tractor. When I stop the car, you might slide right under it and get hurt." So we loaded my sled into the car and left. When we got there, another neighbor, Mrs. Kirby, was there with her little girl. Mrs. Bixby had a little boy. He was ready to go sledding, too. Mrs. Bixby had made popcorn balls. They were warm and sticky. We trudged across the snowy fields and through the piney woods until we came to the big hill. We pulled our sleds to the top and slid down the hill. We did this over and over. I loved sliding down the hills as fast as my sled would go, but I got tired from pulling my sled up the hill all the time. I was lying on my tummy on my sled, watching the other kids slide down the hill and licking snow off my mittens. I stuck my tongue out and touched the metal steering bar on my sled. My tongue got frozen to the metal bar. I could not get it off! I made yelling sounds. Momma came running to see what was the matter. "What have you done, Janet?" she asked. "I got my thung thuck," I said. "Help!" Mrs. Bixby and Mrs. Kirby came over to see what the fuss was all about. Mrs. Bixby said, "I brought some warm cocoa. Pour a little on her tongue. That should melt it." Momma opened up the silver metal tube with warm cocoa in it and poured a little on the tip of my tongue. I pulled back. My tongue came unstuck! Mrs. Bixby had made a lot of warm cocoa. We all sat on the sleds and enjoyed a nice little cup full of warm cocoa. It felt pretty good on my sore little tongue. adapted from "Another No No" by Judith Miller, reprinted with permission of author 1. Janet's mother and Mrs. Bixby are A. cousins. B. sisters. Play in the rain? Melana asked. Sure," said Mom. "Think of it as nature s water park. I especially like it because admission is free. Kelly and Melana stared at Mom to make sure she was serious, and Mom finally asked, Well, what are you two waiting for? With that, Melana and Kelly scooted out the door. Setting Wanda and Jerry were the two best soccer players in Ms. Jackson's class, and everyone knew it. Wanda's team would face Jerry's team in the big game during recess after lunch. All morning, the kids in Ms. Jackson's class could talk about nothing else. "Please!" yelled Ms. Jackson. "We must learn about grammar! There will be time enough for soccer at recess!" At the back of the class, Jerry wadded up a piece of notebook paper and threw it two rows up at Wanda. It hit her right on top of her head. Immediately, she knew Jerry had thrown it. He was trying to make her mad. She turned around and glared at him. Jerry had his hands in front of him on the table, and he was looking up at the ceiling and whistling a little tune. Wanda was about to say something when the lunch bell rang. She'd save it for the game. After lunch on the soccer field, the game was under way. Wanda had already scored twice, and Jerry was having trouble keeping up with her. "What are you waiting for?" she called over her shoulder as she kicked the ball ahead of her. "Aren't you going to try to stop me?" She kicked hard, and the ball flew forward, right past the arms of the diving goalie. Jerry collapsed and tried to catch his breath. "That's the last time I mess with her before a game," he said to himself. 3. What would someone wear if he or she were going to visit Ms. Jackson's class at recess the day of the story?
