1 ST MARTINS LUTHERAN COLLEGE SCHOOL NEWSL ETTER THURSDAY 31ST AUGUST 2017 Website: I office@stmartins.sa.edu.au Principal: Mrs Dianne Eckermann A message from the Head of Primary Exciting News. As you may recall Brenda May and I did a fleeting trip to Northern Sumatra, Indonesia earlier this year with staff from other Lutheran Schools. The aim was to visit schools there to get a feel for the idea of setting up a partnership for service learning. I am pleased to announce that this week we have confirmed a partnership with a primary school in Pematangsiantar, which I guess is a suburb of the larger city Siantar, approximately 3.5 hours from Medan. The Primary school has 153 students from Year 1-6, as well as a small Kindy Room onsite. Early next term Brenda and I will return to the school to make future plans to strengthen our partnership. Following that we will invite Principal Purida Manurung and her English speaking teacher to come visit St Martins, hopefully around April next year, and then the real exciting part is planning to take a group of students and staff to Indonesia probably around September/ next year, spending 1 week in the school. I imagine the trip will be approximately 7 days in total, including the travel. The purpose of our trip next term is to plan transportation and accommodation within the area, get to know the school and the city, as well as sort an extra curricula program for the students and staff when they visit next year. We are also aiming for this service trip to be affordable for a larger group of students and we are certainly open to some parents attending also. Serving is such a rewarding experience, and in this case there is a worldly experience involved also. Please find some pictures of the school, children and staff below. 2 Page 2 BOOK WEEK EXCURSION During Book Week Foundation students went to the Mount Gambier Public Library. Our classes explored the Library and then escaped to Africa. We entered a special African themed room, watched a clip about children in Africa and read a story called The Patchwork Bike. Students then created their own bikes using the materials provided. Look at the bikes our students made below. 4 Page 4 INSTRUMENTAL EISTEDDFODS A large contingent of SMLC Music students recently competed in the Mount Gambier Music Eisteddfods. We had an unprecedented number of entrants in nearly every session this year; brass, woodwind and piano players featured heavily, with many students placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their section. Many of our students also worked together to present duets and trios with great success. For individual results, see Page 13 of the Newsletter. Special mention should be made of Annabelle Mossford MacGregor who was awarded the Lions Club Under 12 Encouragement trophy as well as the Under 12 Young Performers Scholarship for her piano playing. Results for our Junior Ensembles were as follows: Beginner Band (upper primary large ensemble) 3rd Step2Band (upper primary small ensemble) 1st Brass group (upper primary ensemble matching genre of instruments) 1st Woodwind group (upper primary ensemble matching genre of instruments) 2nd We are very proud of all our SMLC young instrumentalists and are looking forward to their continued success in BEGINNER BAND NIGHT Last week our beginner band students performed in front of a very enthusiastic group of parents and friends. The end result was a highly enjoyable and entertaining evening with a bunch of budding maestros.

5 Page 5 SSSSA MIXED HOCKEY FINALS IN ADELAIDE THE BUS DRIVER S PERSPECTIVE With late notice I was asked to drive the bus for the Mixed Hockey students and Miss Lennon to attend the Secondary School Sports of SA Mixed Hockey Finals in Adelaide. I am always keen to help out in whatever way I can, so I jumped at the opportunity, even though I had no real understanding of how good our students were. On game day I drove to the pitch with no real expectation of what was to follow. Our first game was against Concordia College. The students warmed up and practiced some short corner plays before the game. The Concordia team looked well-drilled, and won 4-1. Our team showed good promise, and the goal came on the back of some strong team-work. Our second game quickly followed the first. From our experience with Concordia, we knew that the game against Clare would determine if we would finish 2 nd or 3 rd in our Pool. In the first half, our students peppered the goals without being able to put the score on the board. Finally we were able to put the finishing touch on a couple of plays and ran out winners 2-0. Again, it was a very strong defensive effort ably led by our goal-keepers, Chelsea and Jaylob. After the lunch break it was time for the Semi-Final against the team that topped the other Pool, Pembroke High. If the students were nervous, they were keeping it well in check. This game would determine if they would play in the Grand Final or not. The students played very well defensively for most of the game, stopping many attacking forays and foiling short corners. In the last 2 minutes of the game a counter-attack proved effective with the ball shooting past Pembroke s keeper for the winning goal. We tensely watched the remaining minutes from the sidelines as each attack was repulsed, but the final score remained 1-0. The Grand Final was a repeat of our first pool match where we matched up against Concordia. In the end, we were beaten 5-1, but the game was played in a good spirit, and the students could hold their head high after a fine effort on finishing the Tournament as Runners Up. Special thanks must go to Miss Lennon who coached and organised the substitutions in such a way that we always had at least 5 male and female students on the pitch at all times. The team consisted of: Chelsea Meulders (Goalkeeper), Nicole Moran, Jade Delaney, Neave Delaney, Emily Tully, Caitlin Tully, Agnes Doyle, Jaylob Lobley (Goalkeeper), Hugh Berry, Aiden Pallant, Joe Dow, David Dow, Toby Maddern, Harry Maddern, and Matt Becroft. Congratulations to the SSSSA Mixed Hockey Runners Up, Jason Buckland

6 Page 6 SECONDARY CHINESE Last week the Year 9 Chinese class had the opportunity to do some cooking. We got into 3 groups and cooked 3 different Chinese dishes. One of the dishes was Steam Chicken Buns, made by Hannah, Lucy and Maddison. Cooking this dish was a very long process. We had to make the dough the day before in order to have enough time to let it rise and make the filling on the day, putting it all together. Steaming the buns took a bit longer than expected but other than that, it all went smoothly. In the end, it looked and tasted delicious, as did all the other dishes prepared. The second dish was Pork and Wombok Dumplings. These were made by Brady, Royden, Francois and Lachlan, with some help from Stella. Everyone enjoyed wrapping the dumplings, which we fried and boiled. The last dish was General Tso s Chicken, made by Sophie, Aria and Lianne. It was fun and easy to cook and it turned out delicious. We worked well within their teams, with everyone having their own jobs to do. It was a great learning experience for students to learn how to cook some simple Chinese dishes, as well as using chopsticks. I really enjoyed making the Chinese dumplings and I would love to do it again Lachlan Smith. INDIAN FEAST During the week Year 9 Food and Nutrition students selected, prepared and made Indian food as part of their unit on Indian Culture and Food. Students made naan bread, butter chicken, kofta, samosas, vegetable chapatti and sweet mango lassi to drink.

SCHOOL STREAM UPDATE Recently our survey on School Stream gave us the following feedback which allows us to make changes to make it more user friendly Would be good to be able to put multiple children on the absentee/late arrival form- instead of doing each child individually. Yes we can do that, we will update the form to add up to 4 children! We want to be able to make it specific to my child's classes only Yes we will regularly update the app to show each classroom FG, FD, 1C etc. I would like notifications every time something is updated on the app. Notifications will be sent each time an article is published. If you would like to opt out of the notifications for certain classes or group, please go to the home screen then slide right and tap Setup Groups (pictured). School Stream is our way of getting information to you in an easy and cost effective way that allows you to receive information directly from the Front Office instantly. Our hope is to in future use the School Stream App to replace all paper notes and consent forms from within the College. We hope you ll download the App and let us know what you think!

Due to the involvement of the Wet Noses Animal Rescue, the theme for student s entries is animals. Students can create a new animal or monster, a model of their pet, a house for their pet, a vehicle to transport their pet, even a rocket ship to take their pet to the moon. The possibilities are endless! The following are the rules and regulations for the event: Three different age categories: Foundation and Year 1 Year 2 to Year 4 Year 5 to Year 7 Students need to use their own LEGO to build their creation All entries must be completed by a student and not built by an adult All entries use only LEGO parts Entries cannot be an official LEGO set All entries must be an original creation in line with the theme There is no size limit, however, be aware the bigger creations are more likely to break From Monday 18th of September (Week 8) we will be receiving entries for BrickGambier.
