1 May / June 2015 A publication of the Friends of the Tyler Public Library Heroes coming to the Library for Summer Reading Club Summer Reading Club will soon be here and with it comes heroes of all shapes, sizes and identities. In keeping with our heroes theme this year, many of the Library programs will feature local, state and national heroes as well as heroes you might not expect. Summer Reading Club begins Monday, June 8, with a superhero kickoff party beginning at 1 p.m. in the auditorium. Participants up to age 12 will register for Summer Reading Club, make superhero costumes and have their superhero picture made. Summer Reading Club will end Friday, July 31, with a week of movies to follow from August 3 through August 7. New to our Summer Reading Club will be the ability for participants to track their summer reading online. The Library has partnered with ReadSquared to provide patrons of all ages with a fun, online Summer Reading Club experience. Beginning Monday, June 8, participants will have access to the website where they can set up individual accounts with fun avatars. As participants, young or young at Summer Reading Club Dates: June 8 - July 31, 2015 Kickoff Party June 8, 1-4 p.m. heart, log their reading, they will earn points which will allow them to level up in the program and earn badges. Once the participant reaches the appropriate level, he/she will receive a free book and an entry in the Summer Reading Club prize drawing. Participants can earn extra points, fun badges, free books and more prize entries by participating in library events, reading from special reading lists, playing online games, visiting Summer Reading Club sponsors and more. The wheels on the Tyler Transit buses go round and round to the Tyler Public Library this summer! Children, up to age 18, can ride a city bus for FREE to and from the Library from Monday, June 8 through Friday, August 21. Provide a library card and get on or off the bus at the bus stop closest to the Library located in front of the Fair Parking Garage near the corner of Broadway Avenue and Elm Street. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult, over 18, at all times. Transit and transfer passes are free for children up to age 18, only to and from the Library. Adult passes are $1 each.

Registration Required Toddler Time Each Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. For children up to age 3 All Story Time sessions are canceled the week of June 1 5. Story Time will resume on Monday, June 8. Beginning June 9, Toddler Time, Read Aloud Crowd and Child Care Story Share will move to the auditorium for the summer. Now meeting in the auditorium! Read Aloud Crowd Each Thursday, 10:30 a.m. Ages 3 and up in the Story Room.
3 LEGO Block Party! The American Girl Book Club and Lego Block Party will not meet during the summer. These events will resume Saturday, September 5. Need volunteer hours? No Problem! We provide numerous opportunities year round such as the Summer Reading Club, the Teen Advisory Council and other ongoing programs to earn hours. To be a youth volunteer, you must be 12 to 17 years of age and complete a youth volunteer application with the City of Tyler at Saturday, May 16 10:30 a.m. Rated G ~ 1h 19m Taylor Auditorium Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult, over 18, at all times. Free event; no registration required. Pillows, blankets and carpet-friendly snacks are welcome.
4 Teen Advisory Council Saturday, May 16 1 to 2 p.m. Ages 12 to 18 Taylor Auditorium This is a group for teens looking to take a more active role in helping to conceive and plan Library events for themselves and their peers. 5 2015 Kids Summer Reading Club at your Tyler Public Library Log 12 hours of reading to earn points, a free book and a chance at prizes. Go to and follow the Summer Reading Club link (available June 8). Set up an online account to log your reading time. Earn extra points by reading books from special lists, attending Library events, playing online games and more! More points mean more chances for prizes. Don t have internet access? No problem. Paper reading logs will be available at the information desk. Volunteers will help you log your time online when you visit the Library. For safety purposes, children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult (over 18) at all times. The teaching zoo that comes to you. Come see exotic animals! July 17 Four-Legged Heroes McGruff the Crime Dog, Therapet and the Tyler Chapter of the Dog Scouts will teach you how dogs are more than man s best friend. June 19 Owls: the Night s Silent Hunters Find out how owls hunt things that go bump in the night with the rangers from Tyler State Park. July 24 Heroes on the Rail Exciting stories and adventures with the Texas State Railroad. June 26 Bats, Texas Billion Dollar Aerialists Discover the wonder of bats with the rangers from Tyler State Park. July 31 Game Time Come play card games, board games and other games with your group at this fun event.

Learn about bees and beekeeping with East Texas Beekeeping Association Queen Willow Lancaster. Stories and crafts with active members and veterans of our armed forces. Learn about interesting creatures from the crew from Caldwell Zoo. Learn how astronauts live in space from the experts from NASA. Learn how firefighters put out forest fires with Texas Parks and Wildlife. Participate in a fire safety maze and water bucket race with the Tyler Fire Department. LEGO League is an open, creative play time with Lego and Duplo blocks. We provide the blocks, you provide the imagination.
