2 Welcome Welcome to Ypsilan Township Recrea on Department s Youth Dance Program! We have been offering youth classes for over twenty years. As mes change, we have also experienced a change in the style and types of classes offered. We are on the cu ng edge with a variety of classes that are available to your child. Our classes are taught by experienced, highly qualified instructors who are dedicated to the art of dance. This handbook contains key informa on about our dance program that will be helpful throughout the year, including important dates, rules, costume informa on and class descrip ons. Please contact the recrea on department at , or Angie Wa s, Dance Coordinator at ypsilan dance@gmail.com with any ques ons. You may also Angela Verges, Recrea on Services Manager at averges@. Our Fall-Winter program includes an annual dance recital in late April. Students focus on technique during the fall session. During the winter session, students concentrate more on rou nes in prepara on for the recital. Policies 1. Class placement - Instructors have the right to place students in the appropriate level of class, according to their age and ability. 2. Class schedule - days and mes are subject to change depending on enrollment. You will be no fied of any changes. 3. Changing classes - The cut-off date for students to add or change classes is the end of the 4 th scheduled class of the year. 4. Class refunds - refunds requested prior to the halfway point of the session will be pro-rated. No refunds will be granted a er the session is past the halfway point unless for medical reasons. 5. Costume refunds - will not be granted for any reason. Costumes are ordered specifically to fit your child and the companies will not allow returns. 6. Dance bulletin board - For your convenience; important informa on, notes, and dance class cancella ons will be posted on the dance bulle n board. The dance bulle n board is located in the hallway outside of the dance studio. Parents are responsible for all informa on posted on the dance bulle n board. 7. Attending class - Only registered students are allowed to a end dance classes and all class fees must be paid before the student can attend the class. 8. Parent Watch Days - Parent watch days are the first class of each month in October, November, February & March. (No class watch days in September, December, January, or April) 9. Class Attire & Hair - Dancers need to have proper a re and shoes with hair pulled back. (NO JEANS) Please see class descrip ons for required shoes and a re.

3 Meet our Dance Instructors Angie Watts, Dance Coordinator: Angie has been teaching dance for over ten years. She was a member of the EMU dance team and an instructor for Universal Dance Associa on. Angie danced for 17 years and was trained in Jazz, Hip Hop, Tap, Pom, and Baton Twirling at the Sandusky Dance Academy and Kide e Baton Corp in Ohio. A er receiving her bachelor's degree in educa on at EMU she stepped away from dance to become a teacher at Hillside Middle School in Northville for seven years. While there she also coached cheerleading and girls basketball. She finished her Masters in Educa on in 2009 from the University of Michigan. Angie now resides in Brighton with her husband and young boys. She has a passion for teaching and is excited for the upcoming season! Carrie Musolf, Instructor: Carrie has danced for over 15 years in ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop and lyrical. She con nues to perform and teach at recitals and community events. She is a part of her church s dance team and former member of Movement Ar sts' Guild. She con nues to learn and grow in all forms of dance. She received her Business Degree and works for the University of Michigan. She is looking forward to sharing her knowledge and joy for dance! This will be her fi h-year teaching at our facility. Kayla Chavez, Instructor: Kayla has been dancing since the age of 3, first taking classes at her preschool and later con nuing at local dance studios. She has trained in ballet, tap, jazz, acroba cs, Hawaiian, Tahi an, kick line, lyrical, contemporary, and hip hop. Aside from learning in a dance studio se ng, she also performs in musicals with the Downriver Actors Guild, and has o en been dance captain for these musicals, giving her numerous opportuni es to showcase her abili es onstage. Through theater, she has choreographed 7 children s musicals, which has allowed her to form bonds with her students and learn useful teaching methods to use outside of the theater. She is so excited to start this new adventure and to pass on her love for dance in this program! Kayla Harrell, Instructor: Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Kayla is currently a senior at Eastern Michigan University majoring in dance. She is on the pre-dance therapy track hoping to pursue her Masters in Dance Movement Therapy. Kayla grew up training at a Chris an dance studio called Leap of Faith Dance in Columbus for 13 years. There she trained in ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, and liturgical dance. She has also choreographed for her church Christmas programs, high school Majore e team, and college dance organiza on, Supremacy. Kayla dreams to dance professionally on a Major League team and use her passion of dance to work with children with mental illness and use dance as a coping mechanism and eventually open a studio for all ages and abili es. Makaiah Smith, Instructor: Makaiah is a fourth year student/second year dance major at Eastern Michigan University. Her passion for dance started here at YTRD, at 6 years old she started dancing and was trained in many classes including ballet, tap, Pom, hip-hop, baton and gymnas cs. Makaiah was a member of the Detroit School of Arts dance program where she studied ballet, modern (Dunham), and African as well as taking African master classes. In 2014 her workshop was invited to perform and par cipate in the annual IABD dance conference. Makaiah is currently dancing on the Supremacy dance team at EMU and finishing up her degree in dance ( ballet, pointe, and modern (Humphrey)) with a focus in Studio Management. Krysta White, Instructor: Krysta s interest in dance began while taking Zumba classes in high school in Rochester, MN. As her Zumba skills became refined, Krysta expanded her dance abili es with classes in jazz, modern, ballet, tap, and ballroom. She con nued on to complete a dance cer ficate program at Rochester Community College. As both a dance and fitness enthusiast, she became cer fied and began teaching Zumba classes for adults in 2011 and later Zumba Kids and crea ve movement classes in Her passion for working with children and teaching them valuable movement skills has con nued a er moving to Michigan while working both in childcare and coaching preschool classes at Infinity Gymnas cs in Brighton. Krysta is excited to bring her experience and passion to the YTRD dance program.

4 Class Descriptions/Requirements Pre-Classes - Students must be 3-4 years of age when classes begin. No previous experience is required. Level I - Students must be 5-6 years of age when classes begin. No previous experience is required. Level I classes introduce the student to beginning dance steps. Students normally spend two years in Level I classes. Level II - Students must be 7-9 years of age when classes begin. No previous experience is required. Dance steps become more complicated in Level II, basic steps, technique and vocabulary are mastered. Students should spend two years at this level before moving to level III classes. Students younger than 7 need to have instructors approval before registering. Level III - Students must be 9-12 years of age when classes begin. The student has mastered steps, techniques, and vocabulary from level II. Intermediate classes move at a much faster pace than Level I and Level II. If students are younger than 9 please consult with the instructor before registering. Students should spend two years at this level before moving to level IV classes. Level IV - Students must be years old. The advanced classes move at a fast pace and have higher expectations. Ballet - Technique, vocabulary, strength and flexibility will be developed through the format of a traditional ballet class; beginning with exercises at the barre, moving into center work and finishing with movements across the floor. Required: dance tights, solid colored leotard, and pink leather or canvas ballet slippers. Hair pulled back. Baton - Twirling is a great activity for young children because it helps them develop spatial awareness, fine motor skills, as well as hand-eye coordination. Twirling combines dance and gymnastics while manipulating one, two or three batons. Competition students must audition. Additional $20 baton fee for new students Required: black jazz shoes, tight fitting clothing (tank top, leotard, capri yoga/dance pants, jazz pants, etc). No Jeans!!! Hair pulled back. Batons ($20) must be paid for at registration, instructor will order batons. Competition - Students must have taken at least one year of dance. Choreography becomes a priority with a strong emphasis placed on proper technique, dance vocabulary, muscle memory, strength and flexibility. Students must audition and instructor will place students. All Competition students must enroll in at least one other dance technique class. Required: Please see instructor for shoes required, tight fitting clothing (tank top, leotard, capri yoga/dance pants, jazz pants, etc). Hair pulled back Creative Movement - This class is the perfect introduction to movement and dance for your child. Children learn movement, coordination and rhythm in an atmosphere that is playful, creative and encouraging using a variety of props. Parents are welcome to sit in class for the first few weeks and will slowly transition out when students are ready. Required: comfortable clothing & tennis shoes. Hair pulled back

5 Hip Hop/ Jazz Funk - This class incorporates jazz and hip hop dance styles, giving the dancer exposure to both genres. The dancing represents body movements that go with the beat and rhythm of hip hop music. Hip hop dancing is very dynamic and helps the dancers improve flexibility develop body balance, and coordination. R equired: black jazz shoes, tight fitting clothing (tank top, leotard, capri yoga/dance pants, jazz pants, etc). No Jeans!!! Hair pulled back Jazz - This high energy class is based on classical jazz technique layered with stylistic jazz movement. Students warm up with stretching, isolations, strengthening exercises, and across the floor exercises including turns and leaps. We ll incorporate a combination that is usually fast-paced, rhythmically-based and danced to traditional jazz music and uplifting popular music. Required: black jazz shoes, tight fitting clothing (tank top, leotard, capri yoga/dance pants, jazz pants, etc). No Jeans!!! Hair pulled back Lyrical & Modern - This class combines the passion of lyrical dance with the grounded technique of modern dance. We will focus on the connection to music and creativity, while gaining strength from a combination of modern technique styles, including Graham, Cunningham, and Limon. Students will be introduced to floor work and choreography exercises. Required: tan half sole lyrical shoes, dance paws, or bare feet. Tight fitting clothing (tank top, leotard, capri yoga/dance pants, jazz pants, etc). No Jeans!!! Hair pulled back Pom - Basic Pom and Cheer techniques are taught. Jazz progressions are incorporated such as jazz walks, kicks, combinations, jumps, leaps, and turns. Pom II and III classes may have the option of performing at competition and will be discussed with instructor. Additional $20 Pom fee for levels III & IV. Required: black jazz shoes, tight fitting clothing (tank top, leotard, capri yoga/dance pants, jazz pants, etc). Level I & II classes will use instructors poms. Level III-IV classes need to pay for poms ($20) at registration, instructor will order poms. (Black and silver poms, previous students do not need to buy new poms if already purchased last year) No Jeans!!! Hair pulled back Solos/Duets - are available to Level II - Level IV students with your chosen instructor on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact the dance coordinator for more information. Tap - Students learn to create rhythms with their feet. Classes focus on the development of a sharpened sense of rhythm, coordination, and clarity of sounds. These are incorporated in warm-ups, rhythm sequences, and movements across the floor. Required: black tap shoes, Tight fitting clothing (tank top, leotard, capri yoga/dance pants, jazz pants, etc). No Jeans!!! Hair pulled back

7 Costume Information Costume Measurements Measurements will be taken by the instructor during regular dance mes beginning in October. An inch will be added to each measurement to allow room for growth. If you would like your child moved to a different size, please let your instructor know prior to the last week in October. The size guide from the costume catalog will be available during this me. It is the parents' responsibility to verify their child s costume size. Any costume exchange fees or alterations will be the sole responsibility of the parent. Costumes can only be exchanged if they are available by the costume company. Costume fees Costume fees for the annual recital will be due no later than October 31 st. Costume fees are: XS Child-L Child, $50, XL Child-L Adult, $60, XL-XXL Adult, $65 Costume fees must be paid in full to place an order. Orders will be placed in November to ensure that all costumes will be received in me for the Spring recital. Any costume money received a er October 31 st will be assessed a $10.00 late fee. If the costume needs to be ordered a er the ini al order is already placed, addi onal fees associated with placing a separate order will also be assessed. A er a certain date, we will no longer be able to order costumes in me for the recital. This date changes from year to year. Proper costumes are required to par cipate in the Annual Recital. Costume refund policy There are no refunds on costume orders. Exchanges are based on availability and are at the cost of the parent. Alterations Altera ons and a achment of accessories are the responsibility of the parent or guardian. Please be aware that costumes some mes need altera ons to fit perfectly. Detailed costume informa on will be sent home prior to measurement day. Recital Information Recital is on Saturday, April 28 th at Saline Middle School. Dress rehearsal is on Friday, April 27 th from 3:30-9:00pm at Saline Middle School. A detailed rehearsal/recital handbook will be available in March. Every class performs at the annual dance recital; par cipa on at the recital is op onal. Please let your instructor know if your child will not be performing. Students are required to par cipate in the winter session in order to perform in the recital. The theme for the 2017 Dance Recital will be announced by the beginning of the winter session. Parents will be no fied in advance which show their child will perform in. The show will be professionally recorded. More informa on will be available closer to the recital date. Absolutely NO video cameras or flash photography will be permi ed during the performances. Ticket prices will be announced at a later date and will go on sale in April. Tickets will be sold at the door on the day of the recital if space is available.
