5 Tournament: Before you Leave Home Note weigh-in times: Recommend allowing extra time for warm-up and snacks Wrestlers generally wear a singlet / wrestling shoes / headgear If you don t have these items for your wrestler, see one of us or one of the coaches and we can talk through options Nails should be clipped (so they don t scratch other wrestlers) Tournaments usually cost around $10-$15 for wrestlers and $2- $5 for fans. Most tournament hosts accept cash and check Most tournaments have concessions but you can pack your own sandwiches, drinks and healthy snacks for after weigh-in s Plan on about ½ day spent at tournaments

6 Tournament: When you arrive Complete a registration form for your wrestler. If your wrestler is new to the sport note them as beginner and feel free to add a note stating 1st tournament Follow signs for Weigh ins Usually a period of time (30 60 minutes) before wrestling. Wrestlers can stretch out and warm up on the mats Wait for an announcement by grade of wrestlers to report to staging (often the weigh-in room or hallway near the gym.just follow the crowd). If you choose, you can leave your belongings in the stands when called. In staging, wrestlers will be called by name into a group (bracket) and the group will walk together to the assigned mat. This is the group of wrestlers that your wrestler will compete against. wrestling mom goggles

7 Wrestling Matches Wait near your assigned mat for your wrestler to be called out to wrestle Before the match, each wrestler checks in at the scoring table and is given an ankle band of green or red (corresponding with the referee wrist bands for point assignment) Win can win via a PIN or via points. If in doubt and you lose track of who has how many points the ref will raise the hand of the winner at the end of the match. 3 periods usually 1 minute in length (older wrestlers may see 1.5 minute periods) Most tournaments are a 4-man round robin, so your wrestler will most likely wrestle 3 matches at a tournament

8 Wrestling Matches At the beginning of the 1st period, both wrestlers start up (both standing) The ref will flip a disc and whoever wins the toss will choose if they would like to start the 2nd period both up, Up, Down, or defer The 3rd period, the wrestler who did not win the toss will have the choice Our program tends to have our beginner wrestlers choose down so they have the chance to score 1 point for an escape. [Need to check to see if this is still the coaching practice]

9 When the match ends The match will end: If the referee smacks the mat indicating a Pin When all three periods have ended and one wrestler has more points than the other wrestler If, at any point during the match, one wrestler has 15 points more than their opponent that is a tech win If you d like to learn more about how points are scored, please review information in the handbook which can be found on Waconiawrestling.com

10 After the matches After your wrestler has wrestled all their matches: May need to stay beside the mat while the rest of the bracket finishes wrestling (there is often a few brackets assigned to one mat so wrestlers have time to recover before wrestling their next match) When the bracket is complete with wrestling, they will walk as a group to the awards area After your bracket has received their awards, you can gather your belongings and go about the rest of your day or you can stay and watch friends compete Remember to have your wrestler shower as soon as possible after a wrestling match and to wash their hands before eating after they have been on the mat

11 Other things to know: Wrestling is both a physical sport and a mental sport You may see tears from your wrestler It s O-kay! They put it all out their on the mat and there is only one winner each match You may feel emotional while watching your wrestler (yes, some of us have teared up while sitting matside) - It s O-kay! Many other parents have been there and are here to support you You may begin carrying nail clippers with you everywhere you go You may find yourself yelling, squeeze!!!! or That s 2! or Back Points when you have never uttered these words before you in your life. It s O-kay!
