Bethel Allstars Wrestling Club We are happy to welcome all wrestlers and parents/guardians to the Bethel Allstars. We are hopeful that this will be the most exciting and rewarding wrestling season yet! Our goal is to develop well rounded young men and women who learn not only the fundamentals of wrestling, but self-discipline, teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship and life lessons. Success is the by-product of physical and mental preparation, execution and quality instruction. Our program s motto, Hard Work and Discipline is stressed in the practice room and we believe that hard work equates to success in competition. We win in the third period! We are disciplined and we will not be out conditioned! We will always have more heart! As coaches, we strive to work with everyone to reach their maximum potential. We understand that each wrestler is both an individual and team competitor. Your child s safety is our top concern. The challenge is to also build confidence, desire, and both mental and physical preparation for wrestling. Winning is important, but performance throughout the season is our coaches and wrestlers main goal. We want your wrestlers to feel successful and have fun. Marty Plumb is the Head Coach and Club Director. He started wrestling for Bethel Allstars as a 10 year old in He won the League Championship in 1975 as a 103lb 13 year old. He was a Varsity wrestler for Bethel High School all 3 years (10 th -12 th ). Marty wrestled in Germany in 1981 as part of Team USA. He then continued at Highline as a Varsity wrestler in and Marty then took over Bethel Allstars in We are excited that he is celebrating his 30 th year overseeing Bethel Allstars. His passion for the sport and seeing the kids get those ah-ha moments is seen on and off the mat. Marty has seen a lot, knows how to speak with your children and always has your child s best interest in mind. Marty has 3 firm rules on the mat. 1) No crying on the mat. It is okay to cry, but you must step off the mat. 2) Listen with your eyes and ears 3) No bullying The Sport of Wrestling Wrestling is the oldest sport in the world. There are many forms and styles of wrestling including Freestyle, Greco Roman and Collegiate (Folkstyle). Bethel Allstars compete in the Pierce County Junior Wrestling League which is Collegiate style wrestling. The style is used in most junior high, high school and college competitions. The Pierce County Junior Wrestling League is regarded by many a one of the best, most competitive youth leagues in the United States. You often hear, to be the best, you wrestle against the best. Wrestling is a great sport which with hard work, anyone can achieve success. Wrestling is the only sport. Everything else is just a game. The Bethel Allstar Coaches The Bethel Allstar coaches are a group of volunteers who love the sport of wrestling. They share the desire to teach your wrestler the skills to work their way up the ladder to a successful competition. There is nothing more rewarding to a coach than seeing your wrestler set and achieve goals during the wrestling season. Please be mindful that most coaches have a child on the team. Although, they love coaching your child, as a parent we have to make it a priority for dad coaches to watch their own children wrestle (mentor before, coach and support/celebrate afterwards). We have other coaches and dads need to be dads first and coaches second.

A Bethel Allstars Wrestler A Bethel Allstars wrestler has many traits: o Desire An Allstars desire is their determination to overcome their opponent o Intensity An Allstars wrestler harnesses the power called intensity, by focusing on their goal and converting it into a positive outcome o Courage An Allstars wrestler displays the highest level of courage for stepping on the mat, knowing that two enter but only one leaves victorious o Dignity An Allstars wrestler is sportsmanlike and gracious in defeat. Defeat is not failure, refusing to learn from it is o Self-Reliance An Allstars wrestler knows that his or her own skill and training will bring victory or defeat. None but he/she can assume the blame for their defeat nor take credit for their victory. o Hard Work and Discipline The Allstars Mantra Once an Allstars Always an Allstar Goal Setting This year, the coaching staff would like every wrestler to set and achieve a personal goal. It can be the shortterm goal of executing a great double leg takedown, or the long-term goal of winning a league championship. Goals should be specific, challenging and realistic. Goal setting requires commitment on the part of the coaches and parents as well as the athletes. The Allstars Parent Parents are very important to the success of their wrestlers and the team overall. Coaches and parents must communicate and work together with mutual respect. Please let us know if a child is struggling with a family situation, problems with school/school work, or especially with a teammate that is constantly distracting or abusive. This will not be tolerated! Emotions can run high in the sport of wrestling, whether it is a bad call on the mat, an exciting overtime match, or being in a stuffy gym for 8 hours. Passions must remain in check and maintaining the proper perspective must be a priority. We must ALL set a good example for our children. An Allstars parent encourages good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all wrestlers, coaches and officials at every match, practice or other wrestling events. An Allstars parent provides support for coaches and officials working with their child to provide a positive, enjoyable experience for all. An Allstars parent remembers that this program is for the kids, not for the adults. An Allstars parent will ask their child to treat other wrestlers, coaches, fans and officials with respects. An Allstars parent promises to help the wrestler enjoy this experience within their own personal limitations by assisting with coaching, being a respectful fan, or however else they can contribute. An Allstars parent agrees to show respect to the coaching staff at practices by keeping their voice to a whisper and by taking personal matters outside the practice room (phone calls, family matters, distracting children, etc.). An Allstars parent agrees that there are circumstances in which they may be asked to leave the practice room. An Allstars parent agrees to allow only coaches to talk to officials about rule applications. An Allstars parent agrees that problems with coaches or board members do not need to be a public spectacle (in person or on social media). They will discuss, in person, problems in a mature fashion, away from kids and parents, at a time when emotions don t overshadow common sense. Failure to do so, could result in expulsion from the club. Note: Please meet with coaches after practice. They need as much time to spend with the wrestlers as possible to get them prepared for matches.

Practices Practices are the most important part of being a successful wrestler. At every practice, new skills are taught and problem areas corrected. Repetition of fundamental moves and more time on the mat result in more success for your child. Wrestlers will be at a disadvantage by not being at practices on time and on a consistent basis. Please read the Practice Rules and understand that your wrestler must attend 2 PRACTICES every week or they will not be allowed to challenge for a JV or Varsity position. Excused absences from practices (illness, family emergencies, etc.) are to be reported to bethelallstars@gmail.com. *Please note that practices can change at any time due to school closures or availability! Be sure to stay up-to-date by frequently checking our website (bethelallstars.com). Information is also shared on our Facebook page (Bethel Allstars Parent Page) and via and text messaging. In the event of a last-minute change, it is much faster to update Facebook or the website. Practice Rules Practice begins promptly at 6pm. We ask that your wrestler arrive at 5:45pm so they can put on their shoes. We ask that parents help roll out that mats at the beginning of practice and roll mats up at the end of practice. Beginner practice refers to newer wrestlers and will be held on Mondays/Wednesdays from 6-8pm. Advanced practices are for advanced wrestlers and will be held on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 6-8pm. Advanced wrestlers should attend a Monday or Wednesday practice of their choice. If you are unsure of which wrestler you are (beginner or advanced), please see Coach Marty. Beginners may be invited by Coach Marty to attend advanced practices if the coaches feel that child will benefit from wrestling more experienced wrestlers. If you have children that should be attending beginner and advanced practices, see Coach Marty to determine your practice needs. Female wrestlers must be moderately attired (wearing sports bra or undershirt if necessary) while wearing a singlet. If you are sick, please stay home. Wrestling is a close contact sport and we do not want you on the mat spreading germs to others. Skin conditions if you child has a skin condition, they must have a doctor s note clearing them to practice. Skin conditions are extremely contagious. Attendance will be taken at practice. If your child wants to challenge for a JV or Varsity position, they must attend 2 practices a week. Per League rules, There will be no more than six (6) hours of practice per wrestler per week to include any challenge matches. Time spent at practice meets and scheduled meets will not count towards this total. Middle school wrestlers wrestling for their middle school do not need to attend Allstars practice as their middle school practice will count towards Allstars practice. It would NOT be in the best interest of a Middle Schooler to practice for 4 hours a day. Weights will be taken weekly at practice. Your child must weigh in. This is done for 2 reasons. Children should not be significantly cutting weight and we need to monitor this as a club. Secondly, it helps determine what weight brackets we will have wrestlers in when challenges occur. We are aware that most children weigh 1lb more at night than in the morning). We will have 1-2 challenges (depending on the need) to determine our JV and Varsity wrestlers for each group. If your child choses to challenge, it is extremely important that your child arrives on time! Once the 1 st round is complete for that weight group, we cannot go back, your child will have forfeited the spot.

Challenges Challenges are for determining the Varsity and Junior Varsity positions at your wrester s particular weight. It is important for parents to access the Bethel Allstars website to review the Challenge rules and ask any questions you may have to Damian Cortez or Marty Plumb. Wrestlers who challenge and make the team must be committed to practicing and competing until January 27, They must be able to compete at the weight they made the team at. There will be a 1lb weight allowance after January 1 st. Per PCJWL: o Weight classes for varsity and junior varsity competition are: o Eight and under 42,46,50,54,58,63,69,78,90,110 (Age as of 1/1) o Nine and over 57,60,63,66,69,73,77,81,86,91,96,103,110,120,145,175 (Age as of 1/1) o A 110 eight and under wrestler shall weigh a minimum of 100 pounds and a 175 nine and over wrestler shall weigh a minimum of 145 pounds. o The maximum weight differential allowed between 110 eight and under wrestlers is twenty (22) pounds and for 175 nine and over wrestlers is thirty (32) pounds for any League match. Round Robin Tournaments Round Robin Tournaments are open to both beginner and returning wrestlers. Your child will be placed in groups of 4 determined by weight, skill level and age. Age is divided up between 8 and under (8u) and 9 and over (9o). They will then have the chance to wrestle each child in the group. Round Robins are fun and very important in developing and implementing the skills they have learned at practice. Mat time cannot be substituted, the more matches you have, the better you will be. You will be required to pay $1 at weigh-ins at all Round Robins. This money goes to pay the referees. Please see our website for the dates of our round robin tournaments. Varsity Dual Meets A dual meet is simply a competition between two wrestling clubs. We will have four varsity dual meets on December 9, JV will be required to weigh in and/or attend if the varsity wrestler does not make weight or cannot attend. How our varsity wrestler finishes at the dual meets will determine our seeding at sub-divisions. We will have JV round robin on December 16, Exhibition matches are held before the dual meet starts for all beginner and non-varsity/jv wrestlers. We strongly attend everyone to attend; once again mat time cannot be duplicated or substituted. Tournaments Tournaments are the most exciting days for wrestlers, parents and coaches. Some tournaments may be bracketed for returners while round robin style for beginners. These matches build your wrestler s stamina, physical and mental toughness, and establish a measuring stick for your wrestler s development against his/her competition. Be prepared, tournaments are an all-day affair. Proper rest, hydration and nutrition are all very important of your child. The tournaments we participate in are: Tough Guy (invite only) Friday 11/24/17 most advanced wrestlers will attend this Turkey Tournament Saturday 11/25/17 for those not attending Tough Guy Holiday Tournament Saturday 12/30/17 Everyone Rising Start Saturday 1/6/18 those not attending Sub-divisions (non-varsity/jv)

Fundraising/Volunteering Bethel Allstars have only one fundraiser a year. The Run-A-Thon is held at the beginning of the season and is vital to the present and future success of our club. Each child is required to raise $40. Past run-a-thon monies have gone towards the purchase of new uniforms and tournament entry fees. This year we will NOT be having a Run-A-Thon. Parents will be required to pay the entry fees to the Tough Guy and Turkey Tournaments in lieu of not having a run-a-thon. Volunteering will be especially crucial this year. We are hosting the Holiday Tournament as well as the Divisions Tournament. We will need help setting up beforehand and cleaning up after both events. Help will also be needed to move and set up mats, escort groups of wrestlers to the correct mat, at the scoring table and concessions. We will have sign up forms and you will need to volunteer for a minimum of 2 hours to be refunded the $25 volunteer fee. Awards/Rewards Hard work and discipline does not go unnoticed by our coaching staff. Over the course of the season, patches will be given out to wrestlers: o Gray Practice Stars: for showing up and working hard at practice. Also, a year star, since this patch will be received each year your child is with the club. PLEASE NOTE: We are aware that none of these were passed out for These will be handed out this year so your child will receive 2 this year. o Maroon Match Stars: awarded for executing a move they learned at practice or coming from behind to get a win during a round robin or tournament. o Pin Stars: given for pinning an opponent in a match. At the end of the year, we will have a banquet with several achievement awards for wrestlers, and hopefully a League Championship Trophy. Winning All sports have measurements of success. Losing is tough. In just one day, emotions in wrestling range from the highest of highs, to the lowest of lows. As coaches and parents, we all want to see our wrestlers and our team win. Make no mistake, the goal for our team is winning our League Championship at the end of the year, but nothing in life is worthwhile unless you enjoy and gain from the experience. Positive reinforcement from coaches and parents, win or lose, is not an option, it is a requirement. A big smile with a pat on the back saying, Great job! will go a long way in your wrestler s career and their lives in general. All we ask from our wrestlers is that they do their very best. The goal should be improvement over the season for both the individual and the team. Nutrition/Weight Loss Wrestling is arguably the toughest sport a child can perform. Wrestling is about 80% mental and 20% physical. Proper nutrition and hydration, coupled with sleep/rest are essential to a wrestler s success. Bethel Allstars does not advocate or practice Cutting Weight. After the first two weeks of practice, your child s weight class should be established by his/her weight at that time. The goal of our wrestlers is to be physiologically and psychologically stronger than our opponent. As parents and coaches, we have a responsibility to make this happen. Closing Wresting is truly an art form. Watching a master technician flow from move to move or Chain Wrestle, will stop any admirer of the sport to watch him/her perform. The energy and excitement at the side of the mat or in the stands is an indescribable and overwhelming feeling. Our young wresters are motivated to learn the sport and succeed. It is fun to them; it must be, otherwise it is a chore. Let s face it, chores are no fun. Coaches, parents and kids, we all want to win, but in order to keep this greats sport alive and in a positive standing, we need the kids to love the sport.

Board Members We apologize for any confusion with the sign-ups this year. Most of us are all new to the positions on the board and are trying hard to put together the best year ever! Please reach out to 4 members with phone numbers listed with any questions or concerns. Club Director: Marty Plumb President: Matt Rose Vice President: Preston Hayden Secretary: Jodi Hayden Treasurer: Sarah Rose Director of Tournaments: Damian Cortez Other FAQs: Our season starts Monday 10/16/17 and runs through Saturday 1/6/18 for non-jv or Varsity and through Saturday 1/27/18 for JV or Varsity. We will continue to practice until the state tournament on Sunday 2/18/18. All wrestlers are invited to practice and participate in the state tournament. What is required to wrestle: wrestling shoes, headgear and a cap to cover hair that is shoulder length or longer. Wrestling shoes are worn on the mat ONLY. Wrestling shoes need to put on in the practice room and taken off immediately after practice unless you have slides to put over them. We clean the mats before every practice. Showering after practice your child needs to take a hot shower after practice. It is recommended to use an over-the-counter dandruff shampoo that contains selenium sulfide, such as Head and Shoulders or Selsun Blue as a body wash and shampoo as a prevention to Ringworm. The shampoo will not cure ringworm, but will prevent the spread of it. Finger nails MUST be trimmed prior to practice Blood spills are cleaned immediately Entry fees for round robins/duals tend to be $2 per person (non-wrestler) or $5 per family. Wrestling matches are divided into 3 periods. You can win by a pin/fall (shoulder or shoulder blades on the mat), points or technical fall (ahead by 16 points). A pin ends the match immediately. The time periods for 8 and under are seconds and 9 and over seconds. Why does my child need a USA card? It is for our insurance policy. We are a USA chartered club. USA events are other wrestling tournaments you can sign your child up for. We may or may not have coaches there. If you want to coach your child you will need to purchase a USA coaches card. Trackwrestling.com is the website most tournaments are run through. Tournament results are also kept there. Use the mobile application for your phone at tournaments. I want to coach: Coaches shall work on a voluntary basis, being a minimum age of eighteen (18) years old. A coach should have knowledge of and a strong interest in the sport of wrestling. Coaches shall attend and maintain a League approved coaches certification program that will include sport psychology and coaching techniques. Coaches shall possess and maintain a National Youth Sports Coaches Association current certification. USA Coaches cards are approved for the PCJWL use. Coaches shall fill out a Washington State Patrol Request for Criminal History information form for purposes of obtaining child/adult abuse information. Bring your friends. Online registration closes 11/2/17. All forms and monies due 11/2/17. We do need a copy of your wrestler s birth certificate. Late registration will continue in person with the board.
