Capital Wrestling PROGRAM RULES AND POLICIES Head Coach: Assistants: Jeff Mahana John Schroeck, Kirk DeVore, Dakota Ochoa, Steve Bartmess, Gabe Schroeck Practice Information The season begins November 19th. The Varsity team will be conducting Two a Day practice for the first 5 weeks of the season. Morning Conditioning 6:00 to 7:00 a.m. After School 3:30 to 5:15 Practices begin promptly at 6:00 a.m. for mornings and 3:30 for evening practices. Morning conditioning will consist of weight training, spinning, wrestling, and running. Morning conditioning will be paramount for our team s success and will be tapered back as we progress through the season. The evening practices will focus on wrestling technique and live wrestling. IMPORTANT: (REFER TO THE WRESTLING CALENDAR FOR SCHEDULED PRACTICE DAYS!) These calendars will be handed out to everyone at the parents meeting at the beginning of the season. Weight training and conditioning is a huge part of our program, and all wrestlers are expected to participate in this aspect of our program. ALL WRESTLERS NEED 10 PRACTICES BEFORE COMPETING IN THE FIRST MEET OR DUAL (ONE PRACTICE PER DAY ON 10 DIFFERENT DAYS). Consistent attendance is critical to your success and to the team s success! Students must be in school the day of a scheduled event. An unexcused student may not participate that day or subsequent days if on a weekend. They must also be in school the day after a scheduled event. All wrestlers are expected to be at practice every day and to be on time. If you are going to be late or are miss practice then A PARENT OR GUARDIAN MUST CALL ME BEFORE PRACTICE STARTS AT or call the Capital High Main office and leave Coach Mahana a message Otherwise, it will be considered an unexcused absence. Acceptable reasons for missing practice are medical reasons/emergencies and family emergencies. Makeup school work should be made up at times other than practice. If you are late for practice (school related or otherwise) then you will have extra conditioning after practice. Unexcused practices will not be tolerated: the condition will have to be made up and wrestler will be held out of the next competition. We will be practicing over both Christmas break and Thanksgiving break, so all wrestlers are expected to attend these practices. We understand if you will be gone for family reasons over these breaks, but please remember that we need to take advantage of every practice day we can get. Again, consistent practice is one of the keys to your success.
Practice and Wrestler Expectations GET YOUR PHYSICAL, COMPLETE THE MANDATORY CONCUSSION FORM, HAVE YOUR ACTIVITY FEE PAID FOR WRESTLING, AND TURN IN YOU ALCOHOL/DRUG FORM. All wrestlers need a physical in order to practice. Please be responsible and have these completed before the season starts. Show up on time, prepared, and ready to practice! WORK HARD IN PRACTICE. COACHES EXPECT A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND MAXIMUM EFFORT EVERY DAY! Set a goal for practice. Small daily goals are key to being successful and achieving your larger goals. Weigh-in and mark it on the weight board ever day before and after practice. Coaches need to keep track of where your weight is. Practice gear shirt, shorts, wrestling shoes, and headgear. Headgear is to be worn every practice. Keep up on personal hygiene - Use a new set of practice clothes every day. THE COACHING STAFF RESERVES THE RIGHT TO PULL A WRESTLER OUT OF A TOURNAMENT OR MATCH FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME DEEMED REASONABLE BY THE COACHING STAFF FOR UNSPORTSMANLIKE BEHAVIOR. THE COACHING STAFF WILL ALSO COMPLY WITH MHSA RULES ON UNSPORTMANLIKE BEHAVIOR IN REGARDS TO A WRESTLER. If this is an ongoing problem, then the coaching staff will remove the wrestler from the team. Focus on your school work. Treat your teachers with respect; turn in all your work, and work to get good grades. Weekly grade checks will be conducted, if a wrestler is failing a class they will not participate in competition or practice until they are passing their class. We are always Student then Athletes. Wrestle-Offs/Challenge Matches Wrestle offs will take place on days specified by the coaches. Coaches will set up challenge matches the first few weeks of practice to decide the varsity team for the first competition. After the depth chart is established: 1. Varsity wrestler will need to be beaten the best two-out-of-three to lose his spot. 2. Wrestlers must not weigh more than 5 lbs.( for 145 lbs. and below) of their weight and 8 lbs.(for 152 lbs lbs.) of their weight in order to eligible to challenge. 3. If there are more than two wrestlers per weight, a challenge match will first take place in order to determine who will challenge the varsity wrestler. 4. If there is a Tuesday or mid-week dual then there will be no challenges for that week unless specified by the coaching staff. The previous weeks challenge results will carry over to the next week. 5. All wrestlers are encouraged to challenge each week to determine the depth chart. Coaches may set up live matches during the week at any time and notify the wrestlers the result of the match will be used as a wrestle off. 6. In order to challenge, a wrestler must be in good standing: no late practices the following week, no missed practices, eligible with his grades, and injury free. 7. NOTE: THE COACHING STAFF WILL HAVE THE FINAL SAY IN ALL ROSTERS FOR TOURNAMENTS AND DUALS AND SET THE LINE-UP FOR WHAT IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE TEAM. WE WANT TO PUT THE BEST POSSIBLE LINE-UP ON THE MAT TO GIVE US THE BEST OPPORTUNITY FOR SUCCESS.
Travel/Hotel Policies Dress code for bus trips are semi-formal business attire. If you are not dressed appropriately you will not be allowed to travel with the team. We are taking school buses on all our trips this year, including state. We need to do this due to budget concerns. Buses only seat 45 passengers so we will determine who rides the bus according to the depth chart. No movies with an R rating. Movies must be cleared with Coach Mahana or another coach who is on the bus. You must have a note, signed by a CHS administrator, before we leave for the trip in order to ride home with your parents. It needs to be signed by the administrator, no exceptions. PARENTS/WRESTLERS PLEASE TAKE NOTE: ALL WRESTLERS ARE EXPECTED TO STAY UNTIL THE FINAL WRESTLER IS DONE. WE GO ON THESE TRIPS TO COMPETE AND SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER. WRESTLERS MAY RIDE HOME WITH THEIR PARENTS AFTER EVERYONE IS DONE COMPETING. THIS APPLIES FOR TOURNAMENTS AND DUAL MATCHES. Overnight Trips/Tournaments: 1. Only team members are allowed in rooms. 2. No loitering in the hotel hallways. 3. We represent Capital High, so conduct yourselves accordingly and be class-acts. 4. Please keep your rooms clean. When we leave I expect all rooms to be picked up: garbage picked up, towels in the tubs, pillows and sheets on the beds, etc. Failure to do so will result in extra conditioning. 5. REMEMBER We are on the trip to wrestle hard and compete for the entire time. We can have fun, but remember we are here for a purpose. 6. Wrestlers will be assigned to rooms and there is to be no room swapping. 7. Follow all curfews. Coaches will tell you what time you are to be in your rooms, and what time lights are to be off. You need good rest in order to compete well. 8. Wake up calls will be made by the coaches for each room. The prices for equipment lost will be as follows: Equipment and Gear Warm-up Top $65.00 Singlets: Newer $75.00 Hoodie $30.00 Singlets: Older $55.00 Bottoms $30.00 Headgear $30.00 Each wrestler will be issued a locker and a lock. You are responsible for keeping you gear locked up. Any lost gear issued to you will result in a fine. Each wrestler will be issued headgear, warm ups, and a singlet for competition. Varsity will have two singlets: 1 for the first day of competitions, the other for championship day. Captains will choose which singlet they want the team to wear for duals. Warm ups are to be worn only for competitions, not to school or other events. Do not alter the warm ups or gear. You will be responsible for washing and caring for your gear. Again, any damage done to them will result in a fine. PLEASE WASH THE SINGLETS SEPERATLY. DO NOT WASH THEM WITH OTHER COLORED CLOTHES BECAUSE IT WILL DAMAGE THE COLOR OF THE SINGLET.
Letter Requirements CAPITAL HIGH BRUIN WRESTLING LETTERING CRITERIA Any wrestler who earns 100 points by season s end will earn a varsity letter in wrestling. Points can be earned in the following ways: Attend two club practices during the high school season to help with the younger club wrestlers. Ten points will be awarded for each practice attended. This is an important aspect for the success and philosophy of our program. As a high school wrestling program, we are only as good as our feeder program. There are many youth wrestlers that look up to and aspire to be a Bruin wrester, and this is our way of giving back and showing interest in our future Bruin wrestlers. You may earn extra varsity letter points by attending more club practices. WAYS TO EARN VARSITY LETTER POINTS: 1. Competition in a Varsity Match or Tournament: Six points for a pin Six points for a forfeit or default Five for a technical fall Four points for a major decision Three points for a minor decision 2. Lifting attendance: 1 point for every lifting/conditioning session you make during the season. 3. Grades: 50 points/75 points. A wrestler who earns a 3.0 G.P.A during the 2 nd quarter will earn 50 letter points. A wrestler who earns a 3.5 or higher during the 2 nd quarter will earn 75 varsity letter points. OTHER WAYS TO LETTER: 1. Place in a varsity tournament. The divisional tournament will only count if you place in the top Earn a berth to the state tournament AND win a match at the state tournament. WAYS TO LOSE VARSITY LETTER POINTS: 1. Unexcused absences Lose 10 points (3 accumulated during the season and no varsity letter can be earned). 2. Unsportsmanlike Conduct in a match Lose 20 points (2 accumulated during the season and no varsity letter can be earned). 3. School suspension/drug or alcohol offense No varsity letter can be earned. Byes will not be counted towards points. Varsity team points can be scored in any varsity tournament or dual meet, even if either wrestler is a junior varsity wrestler. Points cannot be earned in a junior varsity dual meet or junior varsity tournament, but they can be earned when the junior varsity wrestles at small school varsity tournaments.
Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying Prevention Policy We take hazing, bullying, and harassment in our program very seriously, and do not tolerate such behavior. The following is taken from the Capital High School Student Handbook: The policy of the Board of Trustees of the Helena Public Schools is to provide students with a school environment free from harassment, intimidation and bullying. The Helena Public Schools will not tolerate harassment, intimidation or bullying in any form at school, school-related events (including off campus events), school sponsored activities, school buses or any event related to school business. Inciting, aiding, encouraging, coercing or directing others to commit acts of harassment, intimidation or bullying is prohibited under this policy. Intimidation, bullying and harassment include: (1) any gesture or written, verbal or physical act that is reasonably perceived as being motivated either by any actual or perceived characteristic, such as race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, sexual identity, culture, social origin or condition, political affiliation or a mental, physical or sensory handicap, or by any other distinguishing characteristic; and (2) acts that a reasonable person knew or should have known, under the circumstances the gesture or written or physical act (a) will have the effect of harming a student or damaging the student s property; or (b) will place a student in reasonable fear of harm to the student s person or damage to the student s property; or (c) has the effect of insulting or demeaning any student or group of students in such a way as to disrupt or interfere with the school s educational mission or the education of any student. Reporting: 1. The District encourages; (1) students who believe they are being subjected to harassment, intimidation, or bullying by anyone, and (2) students who have first-hand knowledge of such harassment to report the matter promptly to their teacher, counselor, bus driver, coach, principal, or any responsible adult who is not involved in the alleged harassment; or to the Helena Public School's EEO officer. Upon receipt of a complaint the District will conduct a prompt and thorough investigation. 2. Any adult school employees, adult volunteers, district contractors or agents who witness, overhear, or receive a report, formal or informal, written or oral, of harassment, intimidation or bullying shall report it in accordance with procedures developed under this policy. (Rev , ) Non-Discrimination Notice: The Helena School District #1 strives to comply with all federal and state rules and regulations. The Helena Public Schools do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender or disability. This holds true for all students who are interested in participating in education programs and/or extracurricular school activities. Inquiries regarding compliance and/or grievance procedures may be directed to the school district's Title IX officer and/or Section 504/ADA coordinator. Wrestling Inherent Risks of Injury/Concussion Information The coaching staff will follow the MHSA guidelines for concussions. Although they are infrequent, concussions do occur and are a serious matter. We will take all the necessary steps if we assume a wrestler has experienced a concussion. ALL PARENTS AND WRESTLERS NEED TO FILL OUT, REVIEW, AND RETURN TO THE HEAD COACH THE STUDENT-ATHLETE & PARENT/LEGAL GUARDIAN CONCUSSION STATEMENT. Wrestling is a contact sport and there are possible risks of injuries to a wrestler. Keep in mind that many wrestlers will have to wrestle with minor injuries which include mat burns, bruises, bloody noses, minor muscle stains, etc. Again, many are minor and the wrestlers can continue wrestling immediately after treatment. The on staff CHS trainer will make the final call on more serious injuries as to how the injured wrestler will proceed.
