2 Introduction Welcome to a brand new year for the Cottondale High School Band! I am excited to be your new band director here at Cottondale. For years, the Pride as a band program has worked hard to exhibit the pride that Cottondale has as a school and a community, and this year will be no different. As we begin a new year, I want to present you with this handbook in order to lay the groundwork for what the year will look like, as well as our tentative schedule and expectations for all band members. If you find yourself thinking of questions that aren t answered by this handbook, please feel free to contact me. The band office number is , extension 232. We also have a new Facebook page set up ( Cottondale Band ), and all info is also posted on the band page on the school website. I have also set up an account through Remind 101, which if you re not familiar with it, is a handy app that allows me to send band info directly to your cell phone. Again, I am excited to start a new year with the Cottondale Band. Together we can accomplish so much to help you grow musically and individually. Let s work hard and make this a great year! 4 Band Camp Because the band will have a more rigorous performance this year, our band camp schedule will take a different shape. The schedule is listed below, and is arranged in such a way as to avoid the worst of the summer heat, but to take advantage of all the time we have. Attendance at all band camp events is required for all 8 th grade- 12 th grade marching band members! We will have a sufficient number of water breaks. - Wear plenty of sunscreen, a hat, lightweight athletic clothing (gym clothes), and comfortable tennis shoes (not flip-flops, boots, sandals!!). - Please DON T wear jeans or other long pants, long sleeved shirts, or jackets/hoodies. You ll burn up! - Eat breakfast and lunch every day (but you probably want to avoid having milk with your breakfast, as milk + heat = a big mess). - The band will meet in the band room and walk across the street to the practice field together- not individually! These guidelines are useful for you to follow not just at Band Camp, but for all outdoor marching band rehearsals.

5 Attendance - All students wishing to participate in Cottondale Band activities must be enrolled in a band class. - It is imperative that all band members are present at each and every band function. Faithful attendance of all band members is crucial to the success of the program. - Band Function may be defined as: all rehearsals, sectionals, performances, trips, or other events as scheduled by the director. - Every student counts! If you re not at a rehearsal or game or other event, your absence hurts the entire band. - There will be a call time for each rehearsal and event. You are responsible for getting yourself to each rehearsal and event in plenty of time to prepare. You should give yourself ample time to unpack, gather your music, put on your uniform, etc. before the scheduled call time. Early is on-time; on-time is late; late is unacceptable. - Tardiness simply should not occur, nor should any absences. You must be dedicated and committed to be here. Discipline yourself to do so! - Students arriving late to any rehearsal or event will be marked tardy. - Tardiness will only be excused if prior discussion has occurred or in extenuating circumstances, at the discretion of the director. - Unexcused tardiness may result in the student being asked to stay late after the event or arrive early for the next event to make up lost time. It may also result in the lowering of the student s weekly grade. - Tardiness in excess of two times may result in the student losing his/her privilege to perform at halftime during the next scheduled game. - Absence from the rehearsal before any performance (games, concerts, etc.) will result in the student automatically losing his/her privilege to perform at the next scheduled event. - Excused absences: Your grade in the Cottondale Band program will reflect your active participation in all rehearsals and performances and your success as a musician. Coming to rehearsals or performances prepared continues to be of the utmost importance, enabling you to enjoy a successful and prosperous musical experience. Excused absences are limited to the following: Medical emergency (doctor s note required) Death in the family - Advanced notice of any absence should be given at least 48 hours before the scheduled rehearsal/performance. A written note should be given as documentation. - If the student is unexpectedly absent from a rehearsal/performance, the director should receive a written note or of explanation within 48 hours following the absence. Without question, academics remain the top priority of all students at Cottondale High School, but excuses of I had a lot of homework last night or I had family over, etc. will not suffice as an excuse. It s up to you to plan and balance your time responsibly! Students involved in multiple after-school activities should notify the director early and often about any potential conflict so that things may be worked out beforehand.

6 Conduct - All students are responsible for reading and adhering to the Jackson County School Board Code of Conduct. - Respect your instructors. Not just the band director, but all instructors at Cottondale High School. The band should be known as an upstanding organization. - Respect band parents. They are here to help you be a better organization. - Respect one another. We are a band family. We support one another and we stick for one another. - Respect property that isn t yours, anything that belongs to another band member or is a school-owned instrument or other school property. No student should be in possession of any other student s instrument or belongings for any reason. If it isn t yours, don t touch it! - Food, drink, and gum are strictly disallowed inside the band room. The one possible exception may be bottled water with a secure top. Exceptions may occur on occasion by special permission/direction of the band director. - The band room is a place of instruction and learning; it isn t a gymnasium! Students should carry themselves in the band room as they would a normal classroom, and should behave accordingly. Students should remain seated in the rehearsal area at all times unless given permission by the director to be elsewhere in the building. - Failure to show proper respect to the director or to those parents/chaperones who have been asked to assist with band activities will result in consequences to be determined by the director and/or administrator per JCSB policy. - All students must complete and turn in the required Off-Campus and Random Drug Test forms to participate in band activities. Students who are discovered in possession or usage of any tobacco products, drugs or drug paraphernalia, or any sort of alcoholic beverage will have at that time immediately forfeited the privilege to continue on as a member of the Pride. - Display of profanity, ill-temper, or other flagrant violation of established policy will not be tolerated. - Keep yourself to yourself! (hands, feet, objects, etc.) - Students should remember to leave things as they are found. Don t leave a mess for someone else to have to clean up! - Consistently or exceptionally bad behavior will result in expulsion from the band program, at the discretion of the director and/or the school administration. Members of the Pride of Cottondale should remember that they represent their school, their community, and to be general, they represent band programs everywhere. People tend to generalize- if they see one band student behaving badly, there is a likelihood they ll assume the whole band behaves badly. If the whole band behaves badly, people will tend to assume that all band students behave badly. Let s work hard to keep our image as one of selfdiscipline and hard work, and in so doing we will earn the respect of not only our community, but of the other communities around us as well.

7 Game Day - For home game days, all marching band students will meet at the band room at the specified time (see schedule above), wearing their band shirts, appropriate gym shorts, and long solid white socks (no socks with other colors or designs). - Every student will need to check out his/her uniform and get dressed, get instrument out and ready (along with anything you ll need such as music, reeds, etc.) On days where there is a threat of inclement weather, woodwinds will carry their cases to the stadium. - Remember, all performances will start and end at the band room. As such, we will march from the band room to the stadium together, and we will return in the same manner after the game is over. - The band will have 3 rd Quarter off each game in order to recover from the halftime performance, use the restroom, grab a snack, etc. Food/drink/gum of any kind is not allowed in the stands at all, the only exception being clear bottled water. - All band students should be seated back in the stands with two minutes remaining in the 3 rd Quarter. - 3 rd Quarter break is a privilege, and as such may be revoked under certain circumstances, such as inappropriate game behavior, tardiness returning from break, etc., at the discretion of the director. - Students may not be checked out from the stadium. All students must be picked up from the band room after the game. - Students who leave the band director without permission will be subject to the disciplinary actions explained in the Conduct section above. - Students will only be dismissed when the band room is set in order and all uniforms/equipment/instruments/personal belongings are stored accordingly. - Please remember that we should positively support and respect visiting band members and fans. If you can t anything nice, then just don t say it at all! Band nerds need to have each other s backs! Travel Guidelines (Away Games, Trips) In the past, the Pride of Cottondale has not traveled extensively to many away games, but this year, the Pride will be attending most of our away games (see the band calendar). There will be several travel opportunities throughout the year. - Students must travel to and from all events on the band bus. Any student wishing to arrive/leave with a parent must notify the director in writing prior to the event. - As previously stated, each band member must have completed and turned all necessary forms in order to travel with the band. - Conduct on the busses should be the same as in the classroom (i.e. remain seated, keep the bus clear of food, drinks, bags, etc., refrain from being loud or disruptive, no public displays of affection, etc.) - Students are responsible for making sure that their instrument/music/uniform and any other necessity are loaded before we depart Cottondale High. - Understand that all performances start and end in the band room- before we board the bus, before we arrive at the event, before the show.

8 - Attendance will be taken each time we board the bus. If you are not on the bus before we depart Cottondale, you run the risk of being left behind. Don t be late! - We will leave the bus in better shape than we found it- no trash should be left anywhere on the bus. - If you are in doubt about any action whatsoever, just DON T DO IT!! - Our chaperones are with us in order to assist in keeping things running smoothly and to show concern for your safety. Chaperones help the band director in many ways, and all chaperones should be shown the same level of respect that the band director or a school administrator receives. Student Leadership The student leadership team will consist of Band Captain, Drum Major, Drum Captain, Quartermaster(s), and a Chaplain. Below are listed the responsibilities for each officer, listed from the highest rank: - Band Captain The band captain is the highest ranking officer in the band. He/she is directly answerable to the band director. The captain s responsibilities include providing the highest example of musicianship, serving as a liaison between the director and the band and working closely with the drum major, displaying the highest possible work ethic and level of commitment. He/she must be present at all band events (rehearsals, games, etc.) and must strive to be the epitome of what it means to be a member of the Pride of Cottondale. Practical responsibilities include assisting with drill at rehearsals, seeing that water is provided at rehearsals, helping to maintain the highest level of discipline at all band events, reporting to the director on the morale of the band, helping to see that band facilities and equipment are kept in good order, keeping the bus lists for away trips, and leading the visitation committee to welcome visiting bands to our home games. - Drum Major The drum major is the next ranking officer and serves as the field conductor of the band. Like the band captain, he/she must give the highest possible example of musicianship, displaying the highest possible work ethic, must be present at all band events and must strive to be the epitome of what it means to be a member of the Pride. The drum major must also work closely with the band captain in leading the band. Practical responsibilities include conducting the band on the field during rehearsals and performances, assisting with drill at rehearsals, conducting the band in the stands and on the field during games, serving on the visitation committee for home games, and helping to see that band facilities and equipment are kept in good order. - Drum Captain The drum captain is the section leader of the percussion section, and is of equal rank with other section leaders and quartermasters in the band. The drum captain must maintain the qualities listed for the above officers. He/she must give the highest possible example of musicianship, displaying the highest possible work ethic, must be present at all band events and must strive be the epitome of what it means to be a member of the Pride. The drum captain is responsible for working with the percussion section in assistance to the director. He/she is expected to help the percussion learn all their marching music, stands music, help them learn cadences, and assist with learning drill. The drum captain will also assist the director in selecting cadences for marching in and out of the stadium and for parades. The drum

9 captain will also function as a quartermaster in that he/she is responsible for making sure that all drum equipment is stored properly, all equipment is loaded when going to or coming from any away trip, and that the drummers are prepared (have their music, sticks/mallets, harnesses, etc.). - Quartermasters The quartermasters are the next ranking officers. They must give the highest possible example of musicianship, displaying the highest possible work ethic, must be present at all band events and must strive to be the epitome of what it means to be a member of the Pride. Practical responsibilities include assisting with the sizing, issuing and storage of uniforms, the loading/unloading of equipment, providing water for rehearsals, seeing that band facilities and equipment are kept in good order, and any other responsibility the director may ask them to take on. Quartermasters may also be tasked with serving as librarians, helping to maintain the music library and assisting with making copies and distributing music to the band. - Chaplain The chaplain is of equal rank with the drum captain and quartermasters, and will also function as a quartermaster (see above). He/she must give the highest possible example of musicianship, displaying the highest possible work ethic, must be present at all band events and must strive to be the epitome of what it means to be a member of the Pride. The main task of the chaplain is to oversee the morale of the band, and make reports to the band director whenever necessary. The chaplain will be asked to lead the band in a short time of prayer before each performance. All members of the leadership team are expected to maintain the highest level of behavior and discipline and must be totally committed to the band program. All officers are expected to be present and on time for each and every rehearsal, game, parade, and all other band related events. The director may call a meeting of the leadership team on occasion in order to discuss current issues and give updated information. Officers will also assist in making quick and orderly contact with the rest of the band as needed. Officers are not to compete with one another for authority- they are to all work with one another, with respect to rank, to maintain the discipline of the band and help us accomplish all our goals. The leadership team must take pride in being The Pride. Concert Band Students in grades 9-12 will constitute the Cottondale High School Concert Band once marching season concludes. The concert band will perform at the Christmas Concert in December, the District Music Performance Assessment in March, and the Spring Concert in May. Students in concert band will also be encouraged to participate in the District Solo & Ensemble Festival in February. The concert band will have several scheduled evening rehearsals in the time leading up to District MPA, and also possibly leading up to the Spring Concert. Sectionals may also be scheduled at the discretion of the band director.

10 Grading Policy In the Cottondale Band program, grades are divided into Class Participation (33.3%) and Rehearsal/Performance Attendance and Tests (66.7%). These are classified by the following: Class Participation - Having your instrument in class each day - Being prepared (mouthpiece, music, other needed equipment) - Instrument/equipment stored properly Rehearsal/Performance Attendance and Tests - Rehearsal attendance - Performance attendance o Tardiness may result in the lowering of rehearsal or performance grade o Unexcused absence will result in a zero unless addressed by the criteria listed above under Attendance o Academic conflicts should be brought to the director s immediate attention so that alternative arrangements can be made - Playing tests o Students will be tested on individual playing ability (note accuracy, rhythm, tone, musicality and confidence, each worth 20 points) on scales, excerpts from classroom music, and other assigned exercises o Each of these 5 categories will be added together to form the final grade for playing tests Financial Obligations & Fundraisers Because of the additions to the band s performance schedule this year, band fees have been raised. All members of The Pride in grades 8-12 are asked to pay band fees of $50 by Tuesday, September 9 th. This fee will go toward covering the cost of dry-cleaning the uniforms, purchasing this year s band shirts, paying assessment fees, and assisting with the cost of hiring bus drivers for away trips. Per Cottondale High School policy, there will be no exceptions or refunds. All 7 th grade band students are asked to pay $10 by the above date for their band shirt. Extra band shirts will be made available for purchase if any parent wishes to purchase one. Also, any family that can is asked to please donate a 24-pack of bottled water for use during band camp and after school rehearsals. Students will also be required to purchase a pair of marching gloves at $2 per pair. These can be purchased from Mr. Toole. Because of the increased cost of band activities, we will begin hosting fundraisers this year. The funds raised from these endeavors will go directly to the cost of maintaining the band program (such as instrument repair, uniform repair, assessment fees, travel costs, music purchases, etc.).

11 All students are individually responsible for furnishing their own flip folders, lyres, reeds, drumsticks, and valve oil. Families with extenuating financial circumstances are asked to make contact with Mr. Toole as soon as possible. School-Owned Equipment The Cottondale Band program has some instruments that are available for rental for the year. Students using school-owned instruments are encouraged to purchase their own mouthpiece, sticks, neck straps, etc. Students who damage school-owned property beyond normal wear and tear will be assessed the cost required to repair the equipment. Damage will be assessed by the director or an instrument repair specialist and a bill will be sent to the student s home. Extreme cases may result in a discipline referral for vandalism and administration will be notified. Please treat all school property as you would your own personal belongings. Instrument storage spaces will be assigned to students during the first week of school. Only one person may use a space. These storage spaces are for storing band related items only. Books, book bags, papers, etc. should be stored in your hallway locker in the main building. Food and drinks are not to be stored in the instrument storage area, and all spaces are subject to search by school personnel. Uniforms Marching band uniforms will be provided by Cottondale High School and will be kept at the school between events. The uniform consists of the following: - Uniform Jacket - Uniform Pants - White marching shoes - Knee-high white socks - Current year Cottondale Band shirt - Gym/athletic shorts (no long pants/jeans or denim shorts) - White gloves - Helmet and plume - Solid white marching shoes Overall Uniform Guidelines - No jewelry (including but not limited to necklaces that are visible, bracelets, rings, any piercings) may be worn when in uniform, with the exception of small studs for the ears. - Hair should be kept up and inside the helmet when helmets are on, or up and not touching your collar when helmets are off. - Fingernail polish should not be worn when in uniform.

12 - Only a light application of makeup may be worn when in uniform (subject to the discretion of the director). - Helmets are to be worn by an individual only when the entire band is wearing helmets. - Your uniform is either on or off- not somewhere in between. When seated in the stands we will possibly remove only our jackets, but the jackets cannot be on but unbuttoned. It must be all the way on or all the way off. - Helmets and plumes are issued with your uniform. - The uniform you are issued must remain your uniform throughout marching season. Students should not trade out jackets or pants as they please; this should be done only if the necessity arises, at the discretion of the director. - Uniforms will be dry-cleaned at least twice throughout marching season. Your band fees will go toward the maintenance of the uniforms. When you are in uniform, you are not viewed as an individual but as a part of the overall group. It is important that we maintain uniformity while participating in any sort of performance. Most people will form an opinion of the entire Cottondale High School Band based on how they view one individual wearing our uniform. Uniform Do s and Don ts DO s - Do inspect you uniform completely. Report any torn seams, hems, or broken snaps immediately to director and/or parent uniform volunteer so the uniform can be repaired before the next performance. - Do keep track of all the uniform parts. Report any missing parts (buttons, snaps, etc.) immediately. - Do always check to see that you are indeed putting on YOUR uniform. If for some reason the numbers get mixed up, it is very difficult to find the right uniform once everyone is already dressed and on the buses! - Do hang your uniform properly and completely in the appropriate rack every time. Also make sure all parts are together when you hang it up. - Do put your name IN your band shoes with permanent ink. We will likely have a big trouble with misplaced shoes. Don t mark the soles of your shoes for ID- it shows when you march. - Do remember to bring YOUR shoes to every performance. In an emergency, old shoes may be available to borrow from the uniform room. - Do wear THE CURRENT YEAR show shirt, gym shorts, and knee-high solid white socks under the uniform. If by some strange turn of events your seams rip open, we want only white to show. If needed, the director will be glad to sell you white knee-high socks. - Do respect the uniforms we have and understand they are a HUGE financial investment that must last us more than a few years. It takes a lot of time and effort to maintain our uniforms. DON Ts - Do not drag your uniform on the ground. - Do not wad up your uniform and stuff it in your locker, bag, or in a bus seat.

13 - Do not handle the plume feathers with your bare hands. They are fragile and can be damaged by sweat and oil. - Do not put on or take off your uniform pants with your shoes on. Pant hems get torn out easily this way and the pants get dirty. Always put your shoes on AFTER your pants and take your shoes off BEFORE your pants. - Do not hang your jacket hanger (with jacket on it) on the front or back of your bibbers while walking to/from events. This will damage the bibbers - Do not switch uniform parts with any other student without permission from the director. For example, if you switch hats with someone and the hat is lost or damaged, YOU will be charged because that piece of equipment was your responsibility. - DO NOT USE YOUR CELL PHONE while in public when in uniform (Concert or Marching). You may use your cell phone once back on the bus, or in the band room. Cell phone use or the use of other electronics is prohibited otherwise. All band students are subject to uniform inspections by the director or by an officer so appointed by the director at any given time. Concert Uniforms The concert uniform for all band students in all grades will be the following: Ladies - Solid black dress pants or skirt (skirt must reach below the knee) - Solid white top/blouse - Solid black shoes (no flip flops, preferably no sandals or open-toed shoes, and especially no high heels) - Solid black socks if wearing black pants - Jewelry is allowed, but only tastefully so- not excessively. Gentlemen - Solid black slacks (no jeans) - Solid white button-up dress shirt or polo, tucked in - Solid black shoes - Solid black socks - A black or neutrally colored tie is allowed Middle School Band Students in grades 7 and 8 will constitute the Cottondale High School Intermediate Band beginning at the conclusion of marching season. The concert uniform is listed above. Students in the intermediate band will perform at the Christmas Concert in December, the District Music Performance Assessment in March and the Spring Concert in May. Intermediate band students will also be encouraged to participate in the District Solo & Ensemble Festival in February. Students in 6 th grade constitute the Beginner Band. Beginner Band students will participate in the Christmas Concert and Spring Concert. Concert uniform is listed above.

14 Stay Up to Speed There are several ways for band students and band parents to stay in the loop with what the Pride is up to. First of all, all information will be posted on the Band page on the school website (listed under Fine Arts), and will be updated as often as possible. Secondly, you may call the band office at ex. 232 or Mr. Toole at Also, it is requested that, if you have a cell phone and receive text messages, you take advantage of an app called Remind 101. You do not have to purchase or download anything; simply send a text to with one of the messages listed below: For marching band members (grades For intermediate band members (grades For beginner band members (grade By doing this, you will receive text alerts from Mr. Toole throughout the week reminding you of rehearsals, games, other events or important announcements (and it s free!).

15 Parent/Student Consent and Agreement Cottondale High School Band Please read, sign and date this form and return it to Mr. Toole before the beginning of the school year. All students must have this form, as well as the required Off-Campus and Travel forms, and the Student Information, Band Fees and Accessories Form, turned in to the director by the beginning of the school year. These forms are necessary to participation in the band program. Parent: I certify that I have thoroughly read and do understand the rules, policies and procedures as set forth in this hand book, pertaining to my child s membership and participation in the Cottondale High School Band program. I further understand the conditions and regulations as set forth in this handbook in regards to grading, attendance, financial obligations and student behavior. I do hereby grant my child permission to participate in the Cottondale High School Band program and certify that I agree to uphold the rules and regulations as set forth by the director.
