Nepal - Geography Have you ever stood inside a tall building and looked out a window? Have you and climbed a tree? Maybe you've even flown in an airplane ond looked down at the ground. Can you remember the feeling of being in a high place? Now imagine being in a place that is higher than anyplace else on earth. This place is a mountain in Nepal. It is called Mount Everest. Nepal is a country in Asia. It is bordered by India in the south and China to the north. Its capital is a city called in Nepal's Kathmandu. There is a mountain range called the Himalayas In Nepals north. This group of mountains has many of the tallest mountains in the world. The tallest of these mountains is Everest. Mount Everest is many times tallest than the tallest building in the world. It is about 8850 meters or feet tall. Can you imagine climbing something that tall? Until about 60 year ago no one Had ever climbed everest. Imagine if you were going to spend weeks climbing up and up and up. What would you need to take with you. Food a tent lot of rope hooks and lots of warm clothes of course! It stays very cold on Everest. Even in the middle of summer the average temperature on top of Everest is -19 degrees Celsius. You can imagine it would be very har to climb so high.

3 One of the first people to climb Everest was a man from Nepal named Tenzig Norgay. He helped a man from New Zealand named Edmund Hillary to reach the top. They didd this on May They werent the first to try but they were the first to succeed. Of course climbing a mountain as tall as Everest is very dangerous. Many people have died trying to get to the top. In people died trying to get to the top of Everest. On May a terrible storm on Everest killed another eight climbers. It was the deadliest year ever on Everest. Remember that Everest isnt' the only tall mountain in the Himalayas. The Himalayas are home to the secondand third-tallest mountains too. A mountain called K2 is 8611 meters tall. Mount Kanchenjuga is 8598 meters tall. And if you can believe it all these mountains are Still growing. How is that possible? Mountains are formed when giant plates of rock deep underground press together. The edges of the plates break and move upward. The Himalayas are between two plates that are still moving. Scientists say that the mountains are rising at 8 to 10 centimeters every year. But wind and rain wear rocks down. So the Himalayas are only growing 2.5 to 5 centimeters every 100 years. No matter how they grow the Himalayas are the tallest mountain in the world. And they make Nepal a place like no other on earth. Did you make at least 8 corrections? If not take another look.
