Equipment List: Rock Rescue Your equipment is the foundation for a positive and successful experience in the mountains. The weather in Colorado is fickle it can change drastically within a short period of time. Climbers often carry clothing and gear they rarely use, but in those rare circumstances, that gear is a life saver! Please read the following key points to consider when accruing your quiver of gear: Non Alpine: This gear list is for lower elevation rock climbing below the alpine environment such as Eldorado Canyon, Boulder Canyon, Flatirons, Clear Creek Canyon, Vedauwoo, South Platte, Black Canyon, and Lumpy Ridge. It also includes Moab, Red Rocks, and other desert areas for these desert areas, realize that their fall and spring are comparable to Boulder s summer. Also realize that Lumpy Ridge, the upper half of Boulder Canyon, and Vedauwoo are 2,000ft higher than the Boulder climbing areas. Quality: In the moment that you need the gear, you will usually wish you had spent the extra money and purchased the quality item instead of the lower end item that just barely gets you by or doesn t. Sizing: A medium in one brand will feel like a large or small in another. When possible, try on clothing in person. You can wait until you arrive in Colorado to visit one of our many world class mountaineering shops. The knowledgeable staff and the selection at Neptune Mountaineering (Boulder, CO) and Bent Gate Mountaineering (Golden, CO) are unsurpassed. Bring it all! Please bring everything on the list (seasonal and optional items are exceptions). It can be a drag when others in the course are waiting for someone to run to the store who did not show up prepared. Due to the immediate weather of the day, your guide may not require you to bring certain items on the list. This list is created to entertain any weather that could be possible for the season. Returns: If you purchase an item that you re not sure will get used on the course/climb, you can leave the tags on that item for a potential return post course. Ask: Feel free to contact the CMS office or your assigned guide for advice. Climbers love to talk about gear!
Rentals: Some of the items on the list are rentable. In the Rental column, if there is a price, that item can be rented. The first price (ex: $7.50) is the price for the first day of the rental. The second price (ex: $2.50) is the price for subsequent days of renting that gear. Rental Package: There are no rental packages offered for this course. Course Length: For multi day courses, adjust the quantity of the specific item to adapt (i.e. Baselayer shirts maybe you d want one per day if you tend to sweat a lot) Weight: With all of the items on the list, keep in mind that you will be carrying a 15 40lb pack, including group gear such as climbing ropes and equipment. Consider bringing travel sized items, such as a 1oz sunscreen versus a year s supply. Clothing Quantity Item Rental Example 1 Longsleeve/Short Sleeve T shirt (Co 㠴 on & Synthe 㰊浔 c/merino Wool) SUMMER For summer courses and spring/fall courses with short approaches, co 㠴 on t shirts are acceptable. Short sleeve synthe 㰊浔 c and merino wool t shirts are okay as well. For longer approaches in the summer, such as for Lumpy Ridge, and higher areas in Eldorado Canyon, you are encouraged to wear one shirt for the sweaty approach and bring a 2nd to put on for the climb/course. 1 Lightweight Baselayer Top Synthe 㰊浔 c or Merino Wool This is worn against the skin and is considered a "wicking" layer that facilitates the movement of moisture away from the skin and through the layers. Hooded baselayers add extra versa 㰊浔 lity. 1 Midweight Baselayer SPRING/FALL Synthe 㰊浔 c or Merino Wool Marmot Salt Point V Neck SS Marmot Women s Aero SS Marmot ThermaClime Pro LS 1/2 Zip Marmot Thermo Hoody
This layer adds extra warmth and protec 㰊浔 on from the cold and wind without crea 㰊浔 ng a moisture barrier as a jacket would. Having at least one baselayer that is hooded adds versa 㰊浔 lity, protec 㰊浔 ng the neck and ears from cold winds. 1 Softshell/Fleece Jacket SPRING/FALL So 㜳shell is the preferred fabric for climbing and mountaineering. It is water resistant, windproof, very durable, yet it "breaths," which means it allows moisture to move through. Hoods are ideal. There are mul 㰊浔 ple thicknesses of So 㜳shell jackets. For rock climbing, a lightweight or medium weight jacket is preferred. Fleece jackets are acceptable. This jacket should fit over all of the above men 㰊浔 oned layers. 1 Waterproof Shell Jacket Non insulated, Gore Tex, Dermizax, Event, or other waterproofing system is required. Mostly, this jacket sits in the bo 㠴 om of your pack and comes out when the weather gets nasty with precipita 㰊浔 on. This jacket should fit over all of the above men 㰊浔 oned layers. 1 Synthetic or Down Puffy Jacket SPRING/FALL This jacket fits over all of the other layers and is worn in the early morning cold during rest breaks and on or near the summits in the higher eleva 㰊浔 ons. Synthe 㰊浔 c puffies are more durable, are easily laundered, and dry out quickly if wet. Down puffies are lighter weight, pack smaller, and provide excep 㰊浔 onal warmth, but once wet, they stay wet so they must be taken good care of while out in the elements. 1 Sport Bra Women 1 Baselayer Bottoms SPRING/FALL Synthe 㰊浔 c or Merino Wool Lightweight or mid weight are recommended for colder days. Marmot Leadville Marmot Women s Vapor Trail Marmot Artemis Jacket Marmot Calen Hoody Marmot Women's Jena Hoody Marmot Women's layer Upper Sportsbra Marmot ThermaClime Sport Tight
1 Climbing Pants, Shorts, & Capris WEATHER DEPENDENT For all seasons co 㠴 on, loose fi ㄊng (or 㰊浔 ght, stretchy) pants are usually acceptable for rock climbing. Shorts are acceptable during the summer though shorts expose the knees and shins to abrasions. New climbers are encouraged to wear pants or capris. In the spring and fall, though co 㠴 on may o 㜳en be appropriate, a synthe 㰊浔 c material (such as so 㜳shell pants) may be required by your guide due to poten 㰊浔 al rain storms. So 㜳shell material is stretchy, wind proof, water resistant, and endures the abrasions that come with climbing. Typical thin, nylon "hiking pants" are generally not tough enough to withstand the abuse that comes with rock climbing the crotch seams o 㜳en blow out. If your pant zips off into shorts, they are probably not the right pant. Marmot Arch Rock Pant or Echo Rock Pant Marmot Women s Sonia Pant or Everyday Knit Capri 2 Socks Co 㠴 on Socks are acceptable for most rock climbing days. Synthe 㰊浔 c and merino wool socks tend to be too hot and make climber s feet sweat excessively. Consider wearing synthe 㰊浔 c/merino wool socks when the forecast calls for rain and you are doing a longer approach into Lumpy Ridge. 1 Beanie/Fleece Hat SPRING/FALL Should cover the ears and fit under a helmet. Hats with fluff balls on top do not work under helmets. Marmot Lightweight Merino Beanie 1 Sun Hat A billed hat for the hike in and out. Personal Items Quantity Item Rental Example 1 Sunglasses Julbo Stunt
"Wrap Around" style sunglasses with 100% UV Protec 㰊浔 on are preferred by guides. Keeper straps are not required, but are preferred by many. Any pair of sunglasses will do for most rock climbs/courses. 2 Lip Screen SPF 15 or higher. Non SPF rated lip balms can actually increase your chances of ge ㄊng burned. Bring two these tend to get lost easily. Keep one in your jacket or pant pocket and the other in your pack. 1 Sunscreen SPF 30 or higher. Travel size. Kiss My Face SPF 30 Dermatone Sunscreen SPF 36 w/z Cote 1oz Food Most climbs/courses will offer opportuni 㰊浔 es to eat a prepared sandwich or pre cut salami and cheese for lunch. Energy bars are recommended to fill in the gaps. For mul 㰊浔 pitch climbs, keep these in pockets so they can be accessed easily at belay anchors. Only bring fruit for cragging days when most of the 㰊浔 me is spent standing and si ㄊng at the bo 㠴 om of the cliff. Gels and energy gummies are great sources of quick energy, but YOU WILL crash very shortly a 㜳er ea 㰊浔 ng them, so be though ㄶul about when you use them. 2 4 Water Bottles Bring 2 4 Liters/Quarts of water for rock days, depending on your tendency to sweat. 1 Liter Nalgene bo 㠴 les are the standard. Bladders such as Camelback and Platypus are acceptable for rock climbs and rock courses however, be careful with your drink tube nipple and with sharp items in your pack. Many climbers have lost their en 㰊浔 re water supply from losing the nipple or puncturing the bladder. 1 Quart Gatorades and Powerades are acceptable as part of your hydra 㰊浔 on supply, but plain water should comprise most of your supply. Nalgene 1 First Aid Kit
Your guide will have an emergency First Aid Kit. You should bring a small kit including blister preven 㰊浔 on and care products such as a role of athle 㰊浔 c tape and Mole Skin. Your kit should also contain a few Band aids, some Tylenol and Ibuprofen. Personal Care Items Allergy medica 㰊浔 ons and other medica 㰊浔 ons, glasses/contacts, feminine products, etc. 1 Emergency Toilet Kit Some 㰊浔 mes nature calls in the most precarious of places and moments. At minimum, bring a small Ziploc with toilet paper. Consider bringing a travel sized package of hand wipes. Ideal purchase, or for free from the RMNP Backcountry office, bring a "Rest Stop." The Rest Stop, known as "Blue Bags" in the Pacific Northwest, or the "Wag Bag" in other areas, are poop in a bag systems that include toilet paper and a sani 㰊浔 zing hand wipe, along with a bag to poop into. This bag is then carried out to the trailhead and discarded in the trash. Climbing Gear Quantity Item Rental Example 1 Climbing Pack Liter pack. Packs smaller than this tend not to be able to carry the necessary amount of equipment and clothing. Large backpacking packs are acceptable. 1 Multi pitch Pack ROUTE DEPENDENT This small Liter pack is carried on mul 㰊浔 pitch climbs. One s approach shoes, water, food, extra layers, and toilet kit go into this li 㠴 le pack. This pack should completely close so that items cannot fall out. $7.50/ $2.50 Marmot Eiger 42 CAMP M4 40L $5.00/ $2.50 Marmot Kompressor Plus or Ultra Kompressor CAMP M2
1 Harness With belay loop and gear loops. Any rock climbing harness will do. Some climbers prefer adjustable leg loops. Women specific harnesses have clips that make dropping the leg loops easier. The waist belt should fit over 3 layers of clothing. Lightweight alpine specific harnesses are not acceptable for ver 㰊浔 cal rock climbing. 1 Helmet Should be large enough to fit over a beanie. Plas 㰊浔 c helmets are more durable, but heavier. Foam, bicycle type climbing helmets are lighter, but more easily damaged when carried in a pack. 1 Rock Climbing Shoes Technical rock shoes fit snug to the feet and have s 㰊浔 cky rubber on the bo 㠴 om that make them climb ver 㰊浔 cal rock be 㠴 er than regular shoes or boots. For beginning climbers, having a looser fit is advisable. In this case, loose means that the toes are touching the front of the shoes when standing, but they are not forced against the front of the shoe. There should not be enough room for the toes to curl under. Generally, socks are not worn with climbing shoes. However, if comfort is your aim, you would not be the first person to be caught wearing socks in climbing shoes. In colder weather, thin socks inside climbing shoes are great! Climbing shoes are best fit in person try on as many different types as you can and choose the one you like best. 1 Approach Shoes These are hiking shoes specifically made for approaching and descending from a climbing venue where scrambling is necessary. They have s 㰊浔 cky climbing rubber on the bo 㠴 om and a formed fit to influence be 㠴 er climbing abili 㰊浔 es while scrambling. Consider high tops for those with weak ankles. $7.50/ $2.50 Included in Rental Package $7.50/ $2.50 Included in Rental Package $7.50/ $2.50 Included in Rental Package CAMP Laser CR Women's Camp Supernova CAMP Titan La Spor 㰊浔 va Tarantula La Spor 㰊浔 va Mythos La Spor 㰊浔 va TC Pro La Spor 㰊浔 va TX2, TX3, or TX4 La Spor 㰊浔 va Boulder X or Boulder X Mid GTX 5 Locking Carabiners CAMP HMS Nitro
Pear shaped carabiners are most versa 㰊浔 le and useful. Most climbers prefer screwgates over twistlocking gates. 6 Non locking Carabiners Most climbers prefer wire gated carabiners due to their lower weight and other useful characteris 㰊浔 cs. These carabiners will be used to organize your cordelle 㠴 es, prusiks, runners, etc. on your harness. 1 Belay/Rappel Device Plaque 㠴 e style devices with assisted braking func 㰊浔 ons are most useful. CAMP Nano 22 CAMP Piu 2 2 Cordellette 㜳 sec 㰊浔 on of 7mm diameter nylon cord. The cordelle 㠴 e is used for building anchors, making fric 㰊浔 on hitches, and various other uses in rock rescue. 7mm diameter cord is the standard for rock climbing, while 6mm cord is acceptable for alpine and ski mountaineering due to the lower forces involved. 5mm tech (kevlar, specta) cords are acceptable for building anchors, but they do not work as fric 㰊浔 on hitches. Try your best to break in the cordelle 㠴 e before the course so they can work well as fric 㰊浔 on hitches. 2 Prusik Cord 6 㜳 or less of 6mm diameter nylon cord 㰊浔 ed into a loop to be used for fric 㰊浔 on hitches. Tech cord (kevlar, spectra) is not acceptable. Sterling makes pre measured and sewn loops the 6mm Autoblock and the Hollowblock. Sterling 6mm Autoblock Sterling Hollowblock 1 Climbing Rack & Alpine Quickdraws 1 set of cams, 1 set stoppers (shoulder length) runners with non locking carabiners. You may need to build anchors, and even mock a lead climbing scenario for rescue prac 㰊浔 ce. If you do not own a lead rack yet, that is okay. Others on the course and your guide will come prepared.
2 Double length Sewn Runner 48" or 120cm. This tool is used for rappelling, making leashes, and rescue. CAMP Express Dyneema Runner 11mm x 120cm Op 㰊浔 onal Items Quantity Item Rental Example 1 Buff/ Neck Gaiter "Buffs" have become very popular among modern climbers. They are quite versa 㰊浔 le in their uses. They can be used as light beanies, neck warmers, and can offer face protec 㰊浔 on from the cold wind. 1 Belay Gloves Leather gloves, either full fingered or fingerless. These protect your hands from rope wear when belaying or rappelling. They also keep your hands warm at belay anchors in colder temperatures. Any standard gardening glove will do. Climbing companies also make climbing gloves with holes in them for clipping to a carabiner. 1 Headlamp w/extra batteries These are used for "alpine starts," or early morning starts in the dark, as well as if unplanned circumstances increase the length of your day and you get caught out a 㜳er dark. These are always carried in the pack by guides. For most rock climbs/courses, these are not necessary. Buff Marmot Basic Work Glove CAMP Axion Belay Gloves Black Diamond Storm Headlamp 1 Camera (Optional) Smartphone ba 㠴 eries tend to shut down in the cold and folks are le 㜳 without photos from their trip. If using a Smartphone, keep it in a chest pocket and consider ge ㄊng an O 㠴 erbox they provide insula 㰊浔 on from wind and from dropping phones on the rocky ground.
