1 Wire Rope Slings: Instruc ons for Care, Use, Inspec on and Repair INSTRUCTIONS FOR CARE, USE, INSPECTION, AND REPAIR CARE Store in a dry, clean area away from chemicals, dust, grit or elevated temperatures. USE Check weight of load. Check sling rated load for type of li & angle of leading (see load angle chart). Sling shall not be twisted, ed into knots or joined by kno ng. Be sure that the load cannot cut the sling during the li by padding corners, edges, protrusions or abrasive surfaces; use materials of sufficient strength and thickness. If hook is a ached to sling, center load on base (bowl) of sling hook unless sling hook is designed for point loading. Balance load. Maintain load control. Avoid jerking the load. Be alert for snagging of load. Avoid dragging sling over rough surfaces and from under the load. Choker hitch must choke on sling body, never on a splice or end fi ng. Stand clear of load at all mes. Persons are not to ride on sling or load. For use in abnormal condi ons of heat, cold, chemical ac vity, consult the manufacturer. Restrict use to temperatures below 400 F (fiber core wire rope below 180 F) and above 40 F. Important: A single leg sling with hand tucked splice can unlay and drop the load if allowed to rotate during a li. Always use a tag line. INSPECTION Before use: look for rope distor on, kinks, cut or broken strands, corrosion, heat damage, bird caging, or crushing. Look at the end a achments for cracks, wear or deforma on, hooks with twists or a throat opening increase. Look for broken or missing wires. For strand laid and single part slings, no more than 10 broken wires in a 1 lay or 5 in 1 strand lay in 1 lay. For cable laid and braided broken wire inspec on criteria, consult the manufacturer. If an inspec on reveals that such wear or damage is present, replace the sling. Frequent inspec on is done by the person handling the sling before each use and must include all of the before use items. Periodic inspec ons must be recorded at least annually for normal service, quarterly or more frequently if in severe service or nearly constant use. Periodic inspec ons are performed by a designated person who records the observed condi on and determines when further use would be hazardous. REPAIR Any hazardous condi on disclosed by an inspec on shall require replacement of the wire rope sling. Repair is not an op on when damage/wear seriously reduces the sling s capacity. Because of the greatly reduced li ing capacity, use extra when the horizontal li angle is less than 45 and do not make li s of less than 30 load angle. Example: A sling rated at and li ing 1,000 pounds will be damaged and could break suddenly when the li ing angle is less than 30 at which angle the sling s capacity is reduced to only 500 pounds. Important: Use a longer sling to increase the angle which will also increase the allowable capacity. For choker hitches, the li ing capacity is reduced by 25% or more, depending on the capacity 27

6 Introduc on to Wire Rope Correct Incorrect Correct Incorrect Incorrect Correct Incorrect Incorrect Correct Correct The nominal or breaking strength of a wire rope applies only to a new, unused rope. The nominal strength of a wire rope should be considered the straight line pull which will actually break a new, unused rope. The nominal strength of a wire rope should never be used as its working load. To determine the working load of a wire rope, the nominal strength must be reduced by a design factor (formerly called a safety factor). The design factor will vary depending upon the type of machine and installa on, and the work performed. For example, a design factor of "5" means that the nominal strength of the wire rope must be divided by five to determine the maximum load that can be applied to the rope system. Government and industrial organiza ons such as OSHA, ANSI and ASME have established recommended design factors for various types of opera ons. Wire rope should never be placed into service without an understanding of the appropriate design factor. Wire rope will fail if worn out, overloaded, misused, damaged or improperly maintained. In service, wire rope loses strength and work capability. Abuse and misuse increase the rate of loss. Wire ropes wear out. Nominal strength begins to decline the first day of service due to natural causes such as surface wear and metal loss and con nues to decrease with each use. Never overload a wire rope. Do not exceed the working load limit (WLL) of the rope. WLL equals nominal strength divided by the appropriate design factor. Never "shock load" a wire rope. A sudden applica on of force or load can cause both visible external damage and internal damage. There is no prac cal way to es mate the force applied by shock loading a rope. The sudden release of a load can also damage a wire rope. Lubricant is applied to the wires and strands of a wire rope when it is manufactured. If the rope is operated outdoors or in a corrosive environment, the lubricant is depleted and should be replaced periodically. Any fi ng a ached to a wire rope may reduce its working load limit depending on the "efficiency ra ng" of the specific fi ng and/or method of assembly. Efficiency ra ngs must be iden fied and understood to ensure safe wire rope usage. Wire rope will be damaged by extreme temperatures. Fiber core wire rope should never be exposed to temperatures exceeding 200 F and IWRC wire rope should never be used at temperatures above 400 F or below 60 F. 32

7 Introduc on to Wire Rope Wire rope is a machine with dozens of individual wires which are formed and fabricated to move or operate at close tolerances to one another. When a wire rope bends, each of its many wires slides and adjusts to accommodate the differences in length between the inside and outside of the bend. The sharper the bend, the greater the movement. Wire Rope has Three Main Components: Wires The wires are mainly constructed from high carbon steel, but may also be formed from various metals such as iron or stainless steel. Carbon steel wire rope is manufactured in various grades, including: Core * Improved Plow Steel (IPS) * Extra Improved Plow Steel (EIPS) * Extra Extra Improved Plow Steel (EEIPS) Wire Rope Strand Wire This designates the nominal strength of the wire rope. EIPS is the most commonly used and manufactured grade today. Strands These are made with a number of wires that may vary from 3 to 91, with the majority of wire ropes falling into the 7 wire, 19 wire, or 37 wire strand categories. Core Usually a wire rope consists of a core member, around which a number of mul wired strands are "laid" or helically bent. There are two general types of cores for wire rope... Fiber Core (FC) and Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC). The fiber core may be made from natural or synthe c fibers. The purpose of the core is to provide support and maintain the posi on of the outer strands during opera on. Any number of mul wired strands may be laid around the core. The most popular arrangement is six strands around the core, as this combina on gives the best balance. Wire Rope Classifica ons 7x19 6x19 IWRC 6X19 FC 6X37 IWRC 6X37 FC 8x19 19x7 Wire ropes are iden fied by classifica ons based upon the number of strands and nominal number of wires in each strand. A 6 x 19 classifica on for example, includes six strands with each strand consis ng of individual wires. The six strands of a 6 x 37 class wire rope are constructed of individual wires. Other popular classifica ons include 19 x 7, 7 x 19 and 8 x 19. Wire Rope Finish Wire rope generally comes with a "bright" or uncoated finish but several other op ons are available. A galvanized, zinc coa ng, a n coa ng or a synthe c coa ng such as vinyl or nylon may also be applied to the rope's surface. Ropes with plas c coa ngs and plas cfilled interiors are also obtainable. It should be understood that these coa ngs can affect the characteris cs and breaking strength of the wire rope. Wire Rope Lays Right Regular Lay (RRL) Le Regular Lay (LRL) Right Alternate Lay (RAL) Le Alternate Lay (LAL) Right Lang Lay (RLL) Le Lang Lay (LLL) "Lay" of a wire rope is simply a descrip on of the way wires and strands are placed during construc on. Right lay and le lay refers to the direc on of strands. Right lay means that the strands pass from le to right across the rope. Le lay means just the opposite: strands pass from right to le. Regular lay and lang lay describes the way wires are placed within each strand. Regular lay means that wire in the strands are laid opposite in direc on to the lay of the strands. Lang lay means that wires are laid in the same direc on as the lay of the strands. Most of the wire rope used is right regular lay. This specifica on has the widest range of applica ons and meets the requirements of most equipment. In fact, other lay specifica ons are considered excep ons and must be requested when ordering. 33

8 General Purpose & Rota on Resistant Wire Rope Specs. 6x19 Class with IWRC Includes 6x19, 6x25 Filler Wire (FW), and 6x26 Warrington Seale (WS) 6x19 Classifica on Wire Ropes provide a balance between fa gue and wear resistance. It is a very popular, general purpose rope that will give long service with moderately sized sheaves and drums, and is o en used for hoists, boom hoists, and slings. Right Regular Lay (RRL) in all sizes. Lang Lay, Le Lay, and Alternate Lay is available in some sizes. 6x36 Class Warrington Seale with IWRC 6x36 Classifica on of Wire Ropes have a third layer of wires which make them more flexible, although less abrasion resistant than ropes of the 6 x 19 class. Each strand contains numerous, compara vely small diameter wires which offer superior bending ability. As the number of wires in each strand increases, flexibility increases. O en used on winches and as hoist ropes on overhead and mobile cranes. EIPS Wire Rope Core The 8x19 Classifica on Rota on resistant ropes are recommended for hois ng unguided loads with a single part or mul part line. The eight outer strands are manufactured in right lay, with the inner strands being le lay. These ropes are slightly stronger and significantly more rugged than the 19x7 construc on. However, the rota on resistant proper es of the 8x19 rota on resistant ropes are much less than those of the 19x7 construc on. The inner strands are le lay, while the 12 outer strands are right lay, which enables one layer to counteract the other layer's rota on. 9 Drop Forged and Malleable Wire Rope Clips Proper use of Wire Rope Clips 1. Refer to the chart in following these instruc ons. Turn back specified amount of rope from thimble or loop. Apply first clip one base width from dead end of rope. Apply U bolt over dead end of wire rope live end rests in saddle. Tighten nuts evenly, alternate from one nut to the other un l reaching the recommended torque. 2. When two clips are required, apply the second clip as near the thimble or loop as possible. Tighten nuts evenly, alterna ng un l reaching the recommended torque. When more than two clips are required, apply the second clip as near the loop or thimble as possible, turn nuts on second clip firmly, but do not ghten. Proceed to Step When three or more clips are required, space addi onal clips equally between the first two take up rope slack ghten nuts on each u bolt evenly, alterna ng from one nut to the other un l reaching the recommended torque. 4. Apply an ini al load equal to loads expected in use. Inspect for proper orienta on and spacing of clips and re ghten the nuts to recommended torque. 10 Open Wedge Sockets Crosby Terminator Wedge Sockets have an efficiency ra ng of 80% based on the catalog strength of XXIP wire rope. They are magne c par cle inspected and sa sfy all applicable ASME requirements. The Terminator wedge design eliminates both the poten al breaking off of the tail due to fa gue and the need for an extra piece of wire rope for installa on. These wedge sockets also feature a pin diameter and jaw opening that works with closed swage and spelter sockets. 36

11 Open and Closed Swage Sockets Forged from special C 1035 steel, fine grain, special bar quality. Spheroidized annealed for cold swaging. Sockets properly applied have an efficiency ra ng of 100%. This is based on the catalog strength of wire rope. 13 Galvanized and Stainless Steel Aircra Cable Specs. Commercial quality "aircra grade" cable is made from galvanized steel wire or stainless steel wire. Galvanized aircra cable provides high tensile strength and adequate corrosion resistance for most commercial applica ons. Stainless steel cable provides slightly lower tensile strength, but greater resistance to corrosion. Although its called Aircra Cable, it is not tested to meet the strict aircra tes ng standards.
