Graham was desperately searching for two additional players on the mornings of the match, and eventually found a couple of recruits, including Dean Bass from Little Bardfield. In an old fashioned friendly dependent on time rather than overs, Halstead batted first and made 213 for 6 in 41.5 overs. Guest players Dean Bass was the pick of the Mersea bowlers with 4 for 25 from his eight overs, the other wicket takers were Ali Husnain (1 for 34) and David Fahie (1 for 5). In reply Mersea slipped to 42 for 4 and seemingly heading towards another friendly defeat. Dean Bass (58) steadied the ship, and capped a fine match by securing the club s first half century of the season. A partnership of 59 with Mel Hughes (23) for the fifth wicket seemed to steer Mersea away from defeat, but when both were dismissed within six runs of each other, the demons began to re-appear. Ali Husnain hit a rapid 29, but was 8 th man out with the score on 149. David Fahie and Adam Porter edged the islanders towards a draw, although Fahie did attempt to run his young partner out on more than one occasion. Porter was eventually bowled with two balls remaining in the game, Graham Smith valiantly defending the last two balls to see the match drawn.

Batting first Mersea made 185 for 8, with Adam Rutter contributing the bulk of the total with an excellent 60. Five other batsmen all got starts, getting to double figures, but no other batsmen was able to score more than 20. Mersea struggled to get any momentum in their innings, with the bowling of Jack Sambrook (5 for 27) restricting the pace of the innings. Witham were never really troubled in their reply, with Mike Headley (73) leading the way in a perfectly paced innings. When Luke Conway did dismiss him on his way to figures of 2 for 31, Kaan Hawes took up the Witham baton with an unbeaten 40 to see the hosts home with 13 balls to spare. New skipper Matt Wilkin lost his first toss and in a break with tradition Mersea found themselves batting first. The innings centred around James Tilsley at number three who made an excellent 73, there was good support from Luke Conway (36) and Matt White whose innings was short and sweet with 20 coming from four scoring shots (2 fours, 2 sixes). Mersea were bowled out in the 38 th over for 191, with Tommy Garwood 4 for 73 and George Sambrook 3 for 23 the pick of the visitors bowlers. In reply Witham never recovered from a fine opening bowling spell from Donk Williams, who bowled four of the opening six batsmen to reduce the visitors to 46 for 5. Stuart Facey (78) batted with some assurance at the top of the order, but with little support the visitors were eventually bowled out for 165 in the final over. Ricky Provan and James Rutter both claimed two wickets a piece, whilst Donk returned in an attempt to claim his first five wicket haul for the club, but failed. Nevertheless his fourteen over spell returned commendable figures of 4 for 36. MERSEA MAN OF THE MATCH : JA Tilsley

Shockingly, Goodridge lost the toss, and Mersea found themselves condemned to the field in the first innings. Luke Conway was the pick of the Mersea bowlers returning 4 for 25 from his ten overs, whilst Trevor Vince was the model of economy after his first over was dispatched for 11, his next nione overs yielded just 13 runs. The Bishops were indebted to a fifth wicket partnership of 50 between G Booker (29) and Martin Talbot (38*), and then a sixth wicket unbeaten stand of 55 between Talbot and James Billington (34*) to get them up to a competitive 181 for 6. In reply Mersea lost Graham Bowers and James Rutter cheaply, but Nod Goodridge (63*) and Ian Young (72) then put on a match winning stand of 122 for the third wicket. Luke Bruce added a quickfire 19 from eight balls to see Mersea to victory in the 34 th over. MERSEA MAN OF THE MATCH : IR Young

Batting first Mersea made an excellent start through Adam Rutter (33) and James Tilsley (33), the pair putting on 60 in eleven overs for the first wicket. However, a middle order collapse which saw Mersea reduced to 111 for 5, briefly threatened the innings. Tom Sanderson (37) then joined Digs Taylor (84) and the pair enjoyed a match winning stand of 116 for the sixth wicket to see Mersea over the 200 mark. An attempt for quick runs at the end of the innings saw the side bowled out for 236. In reply Coggeshall never really threatened the Mersea total as Luke Conway 4 for 27 ripped out the middle order. The home side were eventually bowled out for 118. MERSEA MAN OF THE MATCH : DC Taylor

Mersea batted first and slumped to 10 for 3, before Neil Goodridge (37) and Ed Johnson (58) put on 98 for the fourth wicket. Adam Passfield (32) and Luke Conway (33) added some quick runs at the end of the innings to see Mersea up to 215 all out in the final over. In reply a century opening stand in 21 overs saw the game in the balance. The partnership was broken by Luke Conway, and then the Mersea players had the joy of seeing Earls Colne debutant Kevin Hewes dismissed for a duck to a looping beamer, which to everyone s surprise was not called a no ball! The Colne opener Harry Callaghan retired after reaching his century and from that point the total was never really threatened. Rory Green with 2 for 17 was the most successful bowler, although there were encouraging spells from Callum Drage and Adam Passfield as Mersea won by28 runs.

Mersea won the toss, and in glorious sunshine elected to bat. Adam Rutter and Two Counties debutant Stuart Mills set the tone of the innings with the 100 coming up in 12 th over, Mills was first depart with the score on 144 for 64. Rutter continued the onslaught reaching his century, and with brief cameos from Digs Taylor and Luke Bruce the team were handily placed at 280 for 3, when Luke Conway arrived at the crease. The pair then upped the tempo with Adam Rutter reaching the club s first ever double century, eventually falling for 206, which included a record eleven sixes. Luke Conway hit a rapid unbeaten 74, as Mersea closed at their own Two Counties record high of 410 for 4. The young Kelvedon side had little response to the accurate Mersea bowling, with Tom Sanderson 3 for 12, and Luke Conway 3 for 17 causing the main damage, the visitors were bowled out for 67, to see Mersea achieve their biggest margin of victory in any game of cricket. The partnership of the innings came between Green and Ed Johnson, the pair putting on 67 before Green was fourth man out for a career best 34. Ed Johnson then commanded the rest of the innings to end unbeaten on 86, as Mersea posted 184 for 7 from their 40 overs. The hosts coasted to victory inside 24 overs, with all four batsmen posting scores of over 30, the best being 56 by S Hughes. Jack Luckman and Tom Wargent claimed a wicket a piece as Great Sampford won by 8 wickets.

Copdock won the toss and unsurprisingly in the heat elected to bat, they promptly raced to 70 for 2 off of 13 overs. The game was then delayed for about half an hour due to the arrival of the police following the theft of Mel Hughes car from the ground. A very unfortunate incident, which soured the afternoon. Mel was replaced as wicket keeper by James Rutter, as he went to help the police with their enquiries. The introduction of Luke Conway (2 for 22 from 10) and Trevor Vince (3 for 42) who claimed the wickets of Ward (29) and Archie Wilkinson (40) then halted the home sides charge. Peter Phillips then weighed in with the last four wickets, all bowled, to see Copdock dismissed for 146. The highlight of the reply was Luke Conway s sensational 12 ball fifty (a club record), which included 30 off of one over. His 57, along with an unbeaten 39 from Ian Young saw Mersea to a comfortable victory, and the teams sixth on the bounce, which equalled a record set in Mick Laver also reached a landmark when scoring his 5 th run of the day, reaching runs for Mersea. MERSEA MAN OF THE MATCH : LV Conway

Some useful cameos at the end of the innings saw Mersea eventually reach 181. The Mersea bowlers were always on top as Eight Ash Green went about their reply. Matt Wilkin claimed 2 for 20, and Donk Williams (1 for 19 from 7) bowled a steady opening spell. However, it was Luke Conway who claimed the plaudits with 5 for 41 as the home side were bowled out for 141. MERSEA MAN OF THE MATCH : JI Rutter

After being reduced to 12 for 2, Mersea recovered through some excellent middle order partnerships between Adam Passfield, Lewis Johnson (17) and Jack Luckman (13). Passfield went on to record a career best 69, and with Graham Pryke scoring 32 late on the islanders got home with two wickets to spare.

James Rutter 4 for 43 pegged the visitors back, but with lusty hits from Brett McDonald (22) in the closing overs they reached 164 for 8. Graham Bowers top scored for Mersea with 27, but a mean bowling spell in the middle of the innings from Robin Carter 2 for 14, from eight and then decisive wickets from Martin Feaviour 3 for 13, added to some excellent outfielding saw the islanders slump to 114 all out. Steven Starling (54), Russell Lamb (45) and Doug Flood (39no) all making useful contributions, Luke Conway with 2 for 44 was the most successful Mersea bowler. The game was effectively over as a contest after an excellent opening stand of 150 between Adam Rutter and james Tilsley (47), Adam went on to record his second century of the season, scoring 102, as Mersea reached their target for the loss of four wickets and with 13 overs to spare. The innings was then dominated by an excellent innings from Jamie Glenn, who smashed an unbeaten 112, however, with little support from any of his team mates Maldon could only muster 151 for 9 from their 35 overs. Young returned late in the innings to claim figures of 4 for 26. Mersea coasted to 50 without loss with Adam Rutter (24 and Stuart Mills at the wicket. Mark Foster then claimed three quick wickets, although James Tilsley was unfortunate to be adjudged leg before to a ball that seemed to be high. With Alex Young caught and bowled for a duck to Glenn, Mersea were languishing at 62 for 4. James Rutter, who seems to revel in crisis situations, then joined Stuart Mills, and the pair gradually rebuilt the innings putting on a partnership of 58 before Mills was bowled for 61. Skipper Luke Conway then brought about a rapid end to the game by bashing 27 from just 9 deliveries, whilst Rutter was undefeated on 28 at the other end to see Mersea home by five wickets. Adam Passfield joined Lockhart and continued his good form by striking several deliveries to the boundary. Lockhart was second man out for a career best 46. Passfield took charge of the rest of the innings with 39 as Mersea posted 151 for 5 from their 35 overs. Chappel were dependent on opener Jerry Hadcock (36) for the majority of their runs, as almost all the Mersea bowlers claimed success as the visitors were bowled out for 95. Rayne won the toss and elected to bat on a good track. The two openers batted very sensibly adding 80 runs against some spirited bowling and fielding. All the bowlers performed well but debutants Tom Daines 4 overs for 15, Ben Hughes 4 overs for 15, Matt Smith only 9 years of age!! 4 overs for 21, supported by Graham Smith 8 overs for 39 and Dr Amit Tiwari 5 overs for 12. The introduction of Alex Pacey, playing his first game in over six years produced the breakthrough and there followed a steady procession of wickets as 2 other debutants Connor Green, 11 year old, took 2 wickets for 10 runs from 4 overs and Rosie Daines became the star as she took 3 for 21 from 5 overs. Backed up by two run outs from Dr Amit Tiwari the innings closed at 170 off 40 overs. With a very inexperienced side Graham Smith was promoted to open with Rory Green. After the early dismissal of Rory, Smith was joined by David Fahie and the two produced a great partnership of 77 runs, with Smith dominating the partnership with a career best for Mersea of 62. David Fahie would continue to the end of the innings finally running himself out off the last ball for 48 as Mersea chased 6 off the last ball for an unlikely win. As it was despite some little cameos the innings finished 5 short at 165 for 5, Amit 11 and Alex Pacey 15 adding some acceleration before Mersea fell agonisingly short. More important was the introduction of more young players who hopefully will go on to play for the club for many years.

Mersea batted first and the early momentum came from Matt White who blasted a rapid 31, which included three four and three sixes. Lee Cooper for the visitors was causing the home side all sorts of problems on his way to impressive figures of 7 for 36 as Mersea slumped to 93 for 8. James Rutter, a man for a crisis, as he was earlier in the season against Eight Ash Green, compiled an excellent half century and enjoyed a ninth wicket stand of 44 with Donk Williams who batted very sensibly for a valuable 3 runs. Rutter was last man out for 56 in the last over, but the Mersea score had risen to a respectable 154. The game was rapidly over as a contest as the visitors crashed to 30 for 7 Donk Williams 3 for 7 and Adam Rutter 3 for 26 causing the damage. Luke Conway bowled ten overs for just eight runs to add to the pressure. R Chenery (23no) and J Powell (47no) then put on an undefeated partnership of 78 to see the visitors close at 108 for 7, and deny Mersea full points. MERSEA MAN OF THE MATCH : JI Rutter

Harwich & Dovercourt were the visitors to The Glebe on 30 th June, and gave the islanders a small scare. Not for the first time in the last few weeks the Mersea batsmen failed to put a big score together with only Stuart Mills (45) showing any real resistance against the visitors bowling attack as Mersea were bowled out for just 126. However, the Mersea bowlers came to the rescue once again and with skipper Matt Wilkin and Darren Rumble reducing them to 0 for 2, wickets fell all too alarmingly. Luke Conway pitched in with 4 for 10 as Harwich were shot out for just 59. MERSEA MAN OF THE MATCH : S Mills
