1 SPC Sport Report Term 1, Week 2 Welcome back Hello to all and welcome back to the 2017 school year. It has been great to see all the students return eager to participate in Term 1 BAS and House Sport. The morning notices have been full of sport information (key dates, meeting times etc.) and some meetings have already been held and have been well attended. In January the annual rowing camp was held for Junior, Intermediate and Senior crews. I would like to thank Jamie Bobrowski, Brendan Scott, Alex Thompson, Steph Parsons and the parents for all their help and organisation. The crews are looking strong and have already competed in some regattas in the lead up to the Head of the Lake, which is on Sunday Feb 26. Our 1 st XI cricketers have returned from a week long trip to Tasmania where they competed against fellow Edmund Rice Schools, St. Kevin s Toorak, St. Virgil s Hobart and St. Patrick s Launceston. The match against SPC Launceston doubles as the Br. Breach cup. Unfortunately, we were not able to win a game but were competitive in each match (more details below). I would like to thank Luke Corden and Mark O Loughlin for looking after the boys in Tasmania, a very enjoyable trip was had by all. BAS Sport The majority of Ballarat Associated Schools (BAS) competition sports for term one commence in week three. Students need to ensure that they listen to the morning messages and attend meetings so that they are organised know where they need to be. Always communicate with your coaches if you are unavailable or for general inquiries. The Junior House Sport in particular is a great way for Year 7 s to meet new friends, get to know their teachers and participate in a sport they may never have played before. SPC Swimming The SPC Swimming Carnival will be held on Wednesday February 22 at the Eureka Pool. The Junior and Middle School will commence at 9:30am with the Senior School commencing at 12:30pm. In preparation for this the House Assemblies were held on Tuesday February 7, it is here students were able to sign up for events. The BAS Swimming Carnival will be held on Thursday March 2 at the Ballarat Aquatic Centre at 10:30am. Any inquiries regarding swimming please don t hesitate to contact James Elford or myself. SPC Athletics The SPC Athletics Carnival will be held on Wednesday March 22 here at the College. The House Assemblies will be on Tuesday Feb 28. After the completion of the SPC carnival other BAS Athletics inquiries can be directed to John Richards or myself. Western Highway Late Bus The college will continue to offer a late bus service, leaving at 6:00pm, for students who participate in after school co-curricular activities here at the college, not just sport. Application forms are available from Student Services in the ERC. Once registered students need to place their name on the late bus register no later than recess on the day of travel. All inquiries please contact Glenis in the ERC. This service will not be offered in the first and last week of term. SPC Sport Uniform All sport uniforms can be purchased at the College Shop. Students need to ensure they are in the correct uniform to participate. The general sport uniform is the navy blue polo top, navy shorts and white socks. Certain sports will require very specific clothing e.g. 1 st XI Cricketers require SPC Whites, SPC cricket shirt and SPC cricket cap. Students should check with their coach as to what is required. Also remember to wear sunscreen at all times. I wish all students and coaches the best in Always play the game in the right spirit, wear the correct uniform and respect the facilities, home and away. St. Patrick s College is steeped in sporting tradition and you are encouraged to add more chapters to our past endeavours.
3 Please do not hesitate to contact myself or Sports Administrator Ms Tina Benoit at the College with any questions. CRICKET TOUR TASMANIA Wrap Up Whilst not our most successful tour, missing out in all three of the games, it was certainly one of the most enjoyable ones I ve been a part of over the years with plenty of highlights, banter and good humour throughout the tour. We were competitive in all three games and at stages in all the games, had the game within reach, however it was not to be. Special thanks to skipper Tom Godson and his deputy Richy Dell for the way in which they led this team throughout the week. Below is a short-ish summary of each of the games. Game #1 against St Kevin s saw us post a really competitive 7/181 from our 50 overs on the back of opener Jai McHenry s 74 (120 balls) and some lower order hitting from Tom Godson (15) and Sam Pilgrim (27*). We were in the hunt early with the ball with Godson, Pilgrim and Cashin picking up a wicket each early to have St Kevin s 3/30 after 17. However two dropped catches in the space of a couple overs provided a life to the opener who went on to post an unbeaten hundred and get St Kevin s the win by 6 wickets and 8 overs to spare. Game #2 against St Virgil s threatened to get away from us early despite an early wicket from Tom Miller-Schmetzer before a flurry of wickets saw SPC bowl out SVC for 191 in the 48th over. Miller-Schmetzer the pick of the bowlers with tidy figures of He was supported well by the rest of the attack with 6 different bowlers taking at least one wicket. In reply the new opening duo of Richy Dell and Tom Godson did well to see off the new ball, but scoring was tough on the big ground and a lack off hitting through the middle order saw the run rate climb towards 8 an over. James Richardson was impressive in his 33 (54 balls) as he was supported by Liam Taylor (28 from 46) and Jai McHenry (27 from 20), but it was too prove too little too late as SPC was bundled out for 146 in the 48th over. Game #3 was for the Breach Cup which we won back last year against St Patrick s College Launceston (SPCL). It was tough going for the bowlers in perfect batting conditions as every batsman in the SPCL top seven faced at least 30 balls each and all getting good starts. However regular wickets restricted any one batsman from getting away from us and thanks to an amazing spell of bowling from Samuel Cashin, where he captured 4/6, we were able to restrict them to 193 from 57 overs. Having to bat 28 overs that night we got off to a less than ideal start slipping to 4/19 before Jai McHenry and Curtly Wilson set about resurrecting the innings seeing off the final 20 overs to get us to stumps at 4/48. Day two resumed with both batsmen picking up where they left off and seeming comfortable out in the middle. McHenry eventually fell to the first real chance of his innings spooning one to cover for a well compiled 40 (from 114 balls) and that set off a bit of a collapse with several wickets falling around Wilson who continued to fight it out. However a horrendous mix up saw him sent packing, run out for 37 (from 112 balls). The final wickets offered little resistance and we were eventually bowled out for 110 and had to return the Cup to SPCL. We now look to starting back in the BAS competition with the 1st XI resuming on the 3rd of Feb and the 2nd XI on the 2nd of Feb. A heads up for all those in year 9/10/11 our tours next year include our normal Mildura tour as well our trip to Queensland to take part in the Christian Brothers Cricket Week at Nudgee College, so one to definitely look forward to.
4 1st XI BAS 2-day competition Round 1 BCC 10/67 lost to SPC 2/213 It was a perfect day that greeted us for the first day of the first round of the BAS 2-day competition. SPC taking on BCC on the SPC Main Oval due to the BCC redevelopment. BCC won the toss and elected to bat on a tricky wicket and it was a decision they would come to rue. SPC with a full strength side were deadly with the ball early, picking up consistent wickets to have BCC reeling at 7/30 with all bowlers contributing. Openers Tom Godson and Sam Pilgrim (2/11 from 7) were lethal early giving nothing away and even once they finished their opening spells, Mitch Tuddenham (2/6 from 5) and Jack Lalor (1/11 from 5) simply picked up where they left off. A small nagging partnership then developed before the reintroduction of Godson destroyed any hope of the tail wagging. Godson finishing with the remarkable figures of 4/1 from his 6.3 overs to leave BCC all out for just 67. In reply SPC batted out the remaining overs of day 1 to finish within sight of victory at 0/43. At the resumption of play on day 2 the opening duo of Jack Riding and Connor Ronan put together one of the all-time great SPC partnerships in tricky conditions. The pitch was playing low and slow and in the heat they worked the ball all around the ground, without any risks to put on a massive 185 run opening stand. With the close of play approaching and both batsmen eyeing off centuries they lashed out a little but both ended up falling short, firstly Ronan for a superb 91 (from 119 balls including 9-fours) and then Riding for an equally impressive 80 (from 104 balls including 5-fours and 1-six). Jack Lalor (14*) and Richy Dell (10*) saw SPC through to stumps to finish at 2/213 after 40 overs. 2 nd s Cricket Round 4 - SPC Blue vs Damascus College SPC Blue 4/82 defeated Damascus College 8/79. After what seemed a long mid-season break over the holiday period, the SPC Blue boys were keen to continue their undefeated position in the Second XI competition. Round four saw SPC Blue and Damascus College face off as the two undefeated sides in the competition so far. After winning the toss and electing to bat Damascus College got off to a solid start with both openers reaching double figures on what could only be described as a bowlers wicket. Despite a number of missed opportunities with dropped catches SPC Blue were able to take regular wickets and severely restrict the flow of runs to remove an under-maned Damascus College for 79 runs. Sam Hope bowled magnificently to record outstanding figures of 3 for 1 off three overs. He was well assisted by Dylan York 1/1, Tom Miller-Schmetzer 1/3 Matthew Aikman 1/4 and Dylan Davies 1/20. Despite what appeared to be a low score with only a run rate of 4 per over required for victory I knew the run chase was not going to be so easy with the ball travelling through at a very inconsistent height with regularity. Callum Shaw was able to make a solid 23 which really formed the backbone of the SPC Blue innings. He was well supported by Tom Miller-Schmetzer on 15 but both boys lost their wickets in the same
5 over which gave Damascus College a glimmer of hope as the run rate had not got above the minimum 4 required. Declan Murphy and Jeremy Learmonth both formed a solid partnership to remain not out. Jeremy was 11 and Declan scored 9. Both sides conceded a large number of extras and as the season continues SPC Blue will need to make sure we get our line and length sorted if we are to remain undefeated for season 2016/17. Next round we face Ballarat Grammar away so we will need to prove our capability of winning away from home. Go SPC Blue Mr Michael Busscher SPC Blue Coach
