Friendly: St Patrick s College 10/105 defeated by Melbourne Grammar 9/182 Melbourne Grammar (50 overs) defeated St Patrick's College Travelling down to Melbourne on Sunday morning the day was always going to be difficult one with very strong winds going directly down the ground making one bowling end a nightmare and with temperatures reaching 30 degrees our boys really suffered having had little exposure at this early stage of the cricket season. Winning the toss and thinking that the deck would have some early juice in it and that with the heat it would settle down for the second batting side we chose to bowl. The Melbourne Grammar openers proved difficult to remove and despite a very slow run rate proved that waiting for the right ball was the best approach to take. The best of our bowlers were Taylor Sutton who bowled exceptionally well to capture 4 for 24 off 9, Toby Hutt 1 for 19 off 20, Mitch Walsh 1 for 14 off 4 and Nicholas Strangio 1 for 50 off 10. Despite two catches going down we did hang on to some great catches and forced a run out to have Melbourne Grammar on 182, a score that was achievable with solid batting and consistent run making on our part. As we went in to bat it was obvious that the wicket was deteriorating and that the ball was going to be difficult to face. The Melbourne Grammar bowlers took great advantage of this and bowled with intense pressure and accuracy only allowing 5 extras for our innings! Partnerships did not eventuate for the opening batsmen and as the game continued the run chase continued to blow out adding further pressure on our lower order batsmen. Jake Wilkie held our side together for the longest duration scoring an excellent 38 off 66 deliveries. Jake was assisted by 21 off 31 deliveries and Bailey Van de Heuval 12 off 37 deliveries to leave us well short all out for 105. Thanks to all boys for the early Sunday departure and a special thanks to both Melbourne Grammar for the opportunity of more turf wicket cricket and our parent supporters who joined us in Melbourne.. Friendly: St Patrick s College 6/68 defeated The Geelong College 9/65. In our annual friendly against The Geelong College, SPC got off to an unbelievable start at home, reducing Geelong to 7/30 after 12 overs courtesy of an unbelievable spell from Toby Hutt. Hutt finished with figures of 4/2 from his 4 overs. Geelong managed to get to 65 from their full 20 overs, with Jake Wilkie the other multiple wicket taker with 2/12. In reply no SPC batsmen stood out, but were able to reign in the total 6 wickets down with still 7 overs to spare.. BAS Round 1: St Patrick s College 2/59 defeated Ballarat High School 6/49 After a wet and miserable week of weather, the SPC 1st XI put in a dominate display on a tricky wicket to claim the points in the first round of the 1st XI BAS T20 Competition. Winning the toss and putting BHS in to bat, SPC bowled tight lines and put early pressure on the BHS batsmen. Toby Hutt was the pick of the bowlers with the exceptional T20 figures of 4 overs 2 maidens 3 for 4. Taylor Sutton (1/5 from 3) and Nick Strangio (1/9 from 3) were the other wicket takers. In reply, SPC got off to a watchful start, however, the runs soon began to flow courtesy of Billy Jones' 33 not out (37 balls). Congratulations to Sam Jackson (Year 9) and Jack Lalor (Year 8) on their excellent 1st XI debuts. Many thanks also to Peter Button for his work against all the elements to get the turf wickets up in time for the game. BAS Round 2: St Patrick s College 3/53 defeated Ballarat Clarendon College 8/49. SPC put in a dominate display to move to 2-0 in the BAS T20 competition. SPC were tight with the ball and scoring was difficult for BCC as Taylor Sutton (2/3 from 4) and Mitch Walsh (2/1 from 2) tore the heart out of the BCC innings. In reply SPC got off to a slow start and a couple of quick wickets had the boys on the back foot, however a run-a-ball 40 partnership from Jake Wilkie (19

from 20) and Sam Jackson (20* from 18) saw SPC over the line to claim victory with 9 overs still to spare.. Crusaders T20 Competition This season saw yet another innovation in the First XI Cricket Programme. Unlike in previous years where we have travelled down to Melbourne on two consecutive mornings we created an opportunity to expose our team to High Performance training and recovery strategies as part of this competition. The squad participated in a training session in the MCG indoor training facility conducted by Cricket Victoria Bowling Coach Mr Tim McCaskill prior to our two day competition. In what is an excellent competition we played against Melbourne Grammar, Brighton Grammar, Trinity Grammar and the Crusader Knights all of which are considered elite cricket sides in the Melbourne competitions. Cricket Victoria Premiers Shield A new innovation by Cricket Victoria, was the introduction of the CV Premiers Shield, a T20 competition between the winners of all the different competitions around the state. As winners of the BAS competition last season, SPC was offered a place in the competition. Conditions for the tournament were very ordinary with torrential rain forcing the cancelation of matches. SPC managed one game on the first day, defeating Salesian College in a rain reduced 10/10 game. SPC batting first made a fantastic 4/97 off 10 overs, courtesy of an outstanding 55* (from just 29 balls) by Blake Thomson. Year 12 students Blayde Baker and Aden Nestor each picked up 2 wickets to restrict Salesian to 8/64 from their 10 overs. The next day again saw many rain affected matches as SPC struggled to recapture the form from the previous day, losing both of their morning matches. Br. H.T. Breach Cup: St Patrick s Launceston 10/144 defeated St Patrick s Ballarat 10/119 The Br Breach Cup took on extra significance this year with the passing of Brother Breach and the game was definitely one to remember. Bowling first the Ballarat boys got off to a great start with Tom Martin taking three early wickets to put Launceston on the back foot. A couple of 40 run partnerships through the middle overs helped push Launceston towards a solid total before Tom Martin returned to complete one of the most remarkable bowling performances in SPC Ballarat history. Tom s second spell was almost unplayable, claiming 5/6 in a 3 over spell, to finish with overall figures of , bowling Launceston out in the 39 th over for a respectable 144. In reply Ballarat was cautious in their beginning making their way to 1/67 on the back of Mitch Crosier (18) and Michael Snaith (39). However both batsmen fell quickly and Ballarat suffered a middle order collapse to fall to 4/75. Billy Jones and Taylor Sutton were able to steady the side before Sutton fell to leave Ballarat 5/90. Another few quick wickets meant that Billy quickly ran out of partners, leaving him stranded not out on 28 and Ballarat 25 runs short of victory, with still 9 overs to spare. Queensland Christian Brothers Cricket Week The Queensland Christian Brothers Cricket Week took place in late January this year and was kicked off with the annual Br Breach Cup between St Patrick s Ballarat and Launceston (report above). Our second game was against home side Nudgee College, where SPC got off to a dream start to thanks to Bailey Van de Heuvel (4/40 from 10) and Tom Martin to have Nudgee 4/20. Some big hitting quickly took Nudgee to 70 before SPC again took multiple quick wickets to have Nudgee reeling at 7/74. However some late order big hitting saw Nudgee recover to post a formidable 10/190 from 44 overs. SPC again was solid at the top courtesy of Mitch Crosier (29) and Billy Jones (17), but again a lack of restraint in the middle order saw SPC collapse to be all out for 128 with still 13 overs to spare.

The third game was our first against one of the international teams, Rosmini (Auckland). Bowling first again, SPC repeated the performances of the first two days by reducing Rosmini to 4/30 early thanks to a tight spell from Taylor Sutton (2/28). However a 100 run middle order partnership threatened to take the game away from SPC before Tom Williamson picked up two key wickets to keep Rosmini to 179. SPC again was solid at the top, but similar to previous days, didn t have someone go on with it, and despite having 6 player make it past 15, weren t able to threaten the total. SPC again bowled out with over 10 overs to spare and only 30 runs short. The guys then had a day off to rest and relax, in a way, with a trip to Dreamworld and White Water World, before resuming the following day with a game against Gregory Terrace (Brisbane). Batting first this time, SPC lost opener Tom Williamson in the first over, however this brought Mitch Crosier and Michael Snaith together who put on a rapid 50 run partnership before Crosier fell for 32 (20 of which came from 5 consecutive boundaries). Snaith continued on, however found himself in the all to familiar situation of running out of partners, before he found an ally in Will Madden. The two put on 55 runs (54 of which were from Snaith), before Snaith fell for a fantastic 68. SPC managed to get to a competitive 150. In reply though Gregory Terrace made SPC pay for 2 early dropped catches, losing only 2 wickets in their chase. The fifth game of the tournament saw SPC come against tournament favourites and number one side St Peter s (Auckland). Bowling first Tom Martin struck second ball, however this brought to the crease the tournaments leading run scorer. SPC gave him every chance, dropping 3 straight forward catches, before the golden arm, Michael Snaith, came on to bowl. Snaith produced an amazing spell of 6.5 overs 3/7, which was the catalyst which saw St Peter s go from 1/47 to 7/80. The last two wickets rallied somewhat to get St Peter s to 138, with Taylor Sutton (2/21) and Lewis Compton (2/17) the other multiple wicket takers. In reply Mitch Crosier (47) and Tom Williamson (38) got SPC off to the perfect start, combining for a 91 run opening stand from the first 19 overs. However, everyone suddenly became nervous again, as both fell within 6 balls of each other. Middle order wickets quickly fell, losing 5/10, before Daniel Phyland and Bailey Van De Heuvel steadied ship and saw SPC to victory, with still 19 overs to spare. The final day of the tour was reduced to a T20 match due to the heat as SPC took on St Edmunds (Canberra). Bailey Van de Heuvel was particularly devastating claiming 4/17 from his 4 overs. However this was undone by one particular St Edmunds batsman who smashed 99 from 44 balls (10-fours and 7-sixes) before Bailey returned to knock middle stump out. SPC did well to recover from 2/140 in the 12 th over to restrict St Edmunds to 162. In reply SPC batting with a somewhat mixed up order, got off to a slow and steady start with Bailey opening up and combining with Tom Button to put on 30 runs from the first 6 overs. SPC seemed to far back to make a run at the total before Daniel Phyland (52 from 30 balls) and Liam Jess (29 from 20 balls) combined for an exciting 80 run stand from just 40 balls to put SPC in a position to take the game. In a thrilling finish SPC, however couldn t quite manage the 6 runs needed from the final over to finish an agonisingly 2 runs short of victory. Dr P.M. Casey Cup: St Patrick s College vs St Kevin's College St Kevin s College were unavailable to play our annual challenge in BAS Round 3: St Patrick s College 5/88 defeated Ballarat Grammar 7/86. Round 3 saw a shorthanded SPC take on Ballarat Grammar at home in cold conditions. Bowling first, SPC struck early and kept BGS quiet restricting them to just 18 runs from the powerplay overs. A quick partnership then pushed Grammar along quickly before Toby Hutt (2/13) and Tom Martin (1/10) slowed things down to restrict BGS to 86 from their 20 overs.

In reply most of the SPC batsmen got starts, but no one was able to go on and capitalise. However Mitch Walsh (17*) steered SPC to victory with 1 over to spare, with some help from Toby Hutt (18) and Nick Strangio (13*). Friendly: St Patrick s College 10/100 were defeated by The Crusaders 4/213 After a string of SPC victories over the Crusaders, the visiting Crusaders came in full force and showcased their abilities. Old Boy's Matt Begbie, Justin Graham and particularly Matt Short and his recently signed Melbourne Renegades teammate Sol Mire were devastating with the bat. Toby Hutt bowled well without luck and Taylor Sutton bowled well picking up a couple of wickets before Matt Short took to him. In reply Jake Wilkie was outstanding with the bat, making 50 against some fast and tight bowling. SPC Director of Sport, Chris Gleeson, was devastating with the ball, yes I'm for real, for the Crusaders picking up 2/8 from his 6 overs. An invaluable experience for all involved and the match continues to be a highlight on the SPC cricketing calendar. BAS Round 4: St Patrick s College 4/154 defeated Ballarat High School 3/101 Batting first SPC got off to a flying start thanks to some big hitting from Jonah Healey (42 off 37, inc 2-fours and 2-sixes) and Mitch Crosier (31 off 26, inc 3-fours and 1-six). Both fell quickly but the run rate stayed around 8 and over thanks to Blake Thomson (36 off 18, inc 2-fours and 2-sixes). Mitch Walsh was solid with 27* (30 balls) to see SPC post a formidable In reply some tight early bowling meant that BHS were never really going to get close to the SPC total and only some late hitting got them to 101. Dan Phyland had the pick of the figures with 2/6 and Nick Strangio (1/10) the other wicket taker. BAS Round 5: St Patrick s College 6/136 defeated Ballarat Clarendon College 8/73 Round 5 of the BAS season saw SPC away against BCC. Batting first SPC got off to a quick start before BCC was able to reign in the run rate. However, once his eye was in, Mitch Walsh tore apart the BCC attack to finish with 63. He was supported by Blake Thomson (24) and pushed SPC to a dominate score of 6/136 from the 20 overs. In reply the SPC bowling was tight and any hope that BCC had of chasing down the total were quickly struck down by some excellent fast bowling by Toby Hutt (4/10 off 4) and Tom Martin (1/15 off 4). Nick Strangio (2/13) and Sam Jackson (1/1) continued the tight lines as SPC restricted BCC to 8/73. BAS Round 6: St Patrick s College 10/87 defeated Ballarat Grammar 10/65 After a troubling start on a difficult deck losing Crosier, Thomson, Wilkie and Jones for 2 runs each, a couple of quick cameos from Mitch Walsh (12), Michael Snaith (11) and Sam Jackson (21), SPC managed to scrape together 87 off their 20 overs. In reply, SPC were almost perfect with the ball and in the field allowing BGS to only score 19 runs off the first 10 overs, despite BGS only losing the 1 wicket. In the chase for quick runs, they lost

quick wicket courtesy of 3 run outs and 3 wickets each to Toby Hutt (3/11 off 3.3) and Tom Martin (3/11 off 4). Taylor Sutton was also excellent with the ball picking up 1/7 off his 3 overs. BAS Round 7 St Patrick s College 2/58 defeated Ballarat High School 10/43 Bowling first, SPC set the tone early taking early wickets from which BHS were never able to recover from. All bowlers contributed well throughout the innings... Toby Hutt 2/9 (3 overs) Tom Martin 1/15 (3 overs) Nick Strangio 1/8 (4 overs) Billy Hoye 2/5 (4 overs) Taylor Sutton 1/3 (2 overs) Jake Wilkie 2/2 (2 overs) With the bat, the runs we're never in doubt with Blake Thomson (33* off 26; inc 2-4s and 2-6s) seeing SPC through to the end in 10 overs. BAS Round 8: St Patrick s College 3/152 defeated Ballarat Clarendon College 6/98 Batting first SPC got off to a steady start with Jack Lalor (10) and Mitch Crosier combining for a 35 run opening stand. After Lalor fell, Crosier and Blake Thomson then upped the run rate putting on 48 off just 35 balls before Crosier fell for an excellent 54 off just 44 balls (inc. 5-fours and 2-sixes). Thomson and Jake Wilkie then continued the free flowing innings by combining for 69 off the last 7 overs to push SPC to a formidable 3/152, with Thomson bowled off the last ball for 54 (38 balls inc 2-fours and 3-sixes) and leaving Wilkie not out on 21 (18 balls inc 1-six). In reply Jed Millard was excellent in his 1st XI debut taking a scalp with his 4th ball to put BCC instantly on the back foot and finishing with 1/9 off his 3 overs. Billy Hoye (1/20 off 3), Michael Snaith (1/6 off 2) and Taylor Sutton (2/5) were the wicket takers for SPC as BCC made it to 98 off their 20 overs. BAS Round 9 St Patrick s College2/72 Defeated Ballarat Grammar 10/68 In the final round of the BAS T20 season, SPC were near perfect with the ball. Toby Hutt (1/10) and Taylor Sutton (3/9) ran through the BGS top order to leave them reeling at 6/30. BGS rallied somewhat before Billy Hoye then removed both set batsman, as well as producing an amazing run out to restrict BGS to 68. In reply Mitch Crosier (33) and Michael Snaith (27) quickly set about chasing the runs down putting together a rapid 60 run partnership from just 6 overs, before both fell just a couple runs short of the target. However the damage was done and Blake Thomson saw SPC chase the total down in just 8 overs. BAS Grand Final: St Patrick s College 6/113 defeated Ballarat Grammar 7/112 The Grand Final was an absolute thriller and SPC was able to come away with the premiership by the smallest of possible margins, one run, courtesy of a direct hit run out off the last ball of the game. SPC was put into bat in cold, wet conditions, however got off to a flyer courtesy of Mitch Crosier (25 from 17, 3-fours and 1-six) and Michael Snaith (15 off 27). However once Crosier fell, the runs dried up and wickets fell quickly before Mitch Walsh (15 from 18) steadied ship and combined with some late boundaries from Toby Hutt (13 from 11) pushed SPC to a solid 6/113 from the 20 overs.

In reply Grammar got off to a dream start, with Will Mills smashing the SPC bowlers all around the ground, pushing Grammar to 0/56 off just the first 6 overs. Nick Strangio then produced a marvellous spell of leg spin bowling (which in hindsight proved to be match winning) to claim both openers along the way to figures of 4 overs 2/14. SPC was then able to dry the runs up, however Grammar were still in a comfortable position requiring just 20 runs from the final 5 overs. However Blake Thomson, Jake Wilkie, Toby Hutt and Tom Martin each bowled tight overs leaving Grammar requiring 11 runs to win from the final over. The last over saw the game change hands at least 3 times. First ball the batsmen missed - 11 off 5. Next ball a big hit to the outfield, but the batsmen came back for a suicidal run leading to a run out - 10 off 4. The next ball was smashed at a fielder who misfielded leading the batsmen to run two - 8 off 3. The game then changed again, out of nowhere the Grammar batsman smashes a 6 over cover leaving Grammar needing only 2 to win (1 to draw) off the last two balls. A big swing but a miss off the penultimate ball left Grammar needing 2 off the last ball to win or one to send the game to a super over. The last ball again drew a big swing but another miss, however the batsmen went for the run, Billy Jones the keeper throwing the ball to Toby Hutt the bowler who turned and threw down the stumps at the bowlers end to bring on wild celebrations from the SPC players and supporters

Season Summary 2013/2014: 2 nd XI BLUE Coach: Mr Joseph Carmody Players of the Year: Bowling: Batting: Best Player in Grand Final: BAS Round 1: SPC Blue 9/135 defeated Damascus College 10/56 SPC Blue easily accounted for Damascus College recording a crushing first up victory. Lachlan Snaith 29, Sam Jackson 26 including one enormous 6, Tom Button 19, Andrew Milroy 11 and Tom Martin10 highlighted the batting strength of SPC Blue as similar to SPC White where all boys were able to make a valuable contribution to what was an outstanding team score. With the run chase beyond a run a ball the Damascus boys had no easy start to get themselves settled in at the crease. Tom and Nick Martin opened the bowling and both captured a wicket each, Nick 1 for 4 and Tom 1 for 6. Sam Jackson, on top of his batting display, captured 2 for 9 off 3 overs. Keogh bowled controlled line and length to record 2 for 13 and Andrew Milroy took 1 for 12 to end the Damascus College innings well short of the required runs. Training continues each Monday after school and I encourage all members of SPC Blue to avail themselves of this valuable opportunity to improve their cricket and put pressure on members of the First XI for their place in the side. BAS Round 2: SPC Blue 8/111 defeated Ballarat Grammar 10/55 SPC Blue won their second game of the season with a comprehensive win over BGS. Having won the toss and batting first, SPC Blue made 8/111 from their allocated 20 overs. Top run scorer was Captain Michael Snaith who made 45 from 47 balls. Andrew Milroy also chipped in with 15 from 9 balls. SPC Blue bowlers dominated early as BGS found themselves at 6/10. BGS were eventually bowled out for 55 with great efforts from Tom Martin and Michael Snaith who both took 3 wickets. BAS Round 3: SPC Blue 5/120 defeated SPC White 7/116 In a tight encounter SPC Blue defeated SPC Green by 4 runs. Having won the toss and batted first SPC Blue posted a score of 5/120.Chief run scorers were Sam Jackson with 40 and Lachlan Snaith with 24. SPC White's run chase started poorly losing two early wickets. It then gained momentum with a fantastic innings from Paddy Collier who scored 47 including 4 big 6"s. Taylor Sutton also batted very well with a well compiled 36. Unfortunately, SPC White's run chase hit a hurdle when these two platers lost their wicket. Best of the bowlers for SPC Blue was Andrew Milroy who took 3/18 off his allocated 4 overs. This result leaves SPC Blue undefeated after 3 rounds. BAS Round 4: SPC Blue 3/167 defeated Ballarat Clarendon College 5/108 SPC Blue continued their unbeaten run with a resounding victory over BCC. After winning the toss and electing to bat SPC Blue piled on the runs to post a total of 3/167. Major contributors were Jonah Healy with a blistering 67 not out while Connor McKee made a well compiled 42 not out. SPC Blue used 9 bowlers with keeper turned batsman Jacob Brown claiming 2/16 off 2 overs. Opening bowler Nick Martin continued his good form claiming 1/1 off 3 overs. BAS Round 5: SPC Blue 3/108 defeated SPC Green 7/76 SPC Blue continued its unbeaten run winning in convincing fashion against SPC Green. SPC Green batted first and made 7/76. Will Madden made a well-constructed 32 while Daniel Rioli made a sparkling 22 which included 4 boundaries. In reply, SPC Blue was in early trouble at 3/28.

However, a superb innings by Nick Martin ensured victory for SPC Blue. Nick made 61 not out which included nine 4's and one massive 6. BAS Round 6: SPC Blue were bowled out for 32 while MCC were bowled out for 75 BAS Round 7: SPC Blue 1/124 defeated Ballarat High School 10/53 Nick. Martin 40 not out Jed. Millard 37 not out Lachlan. Snaith 28 Nick. Martin 4/9 Jed. Millard 2/8 SPC Blue lost the toss and bowled first against a young BHS side. Nick Martin was outstanding with figures of 4/9 off 4 overs. Jed Millard also bowled a consistent line and length and finished with figures of 2/8. Those two boys also contributed considerably with the bat with Nick Martin making 40 not out and Jed Millard 37 not out. Lachlan Snaith backed up his good keeping effort with a well compiled 28. BAS Round 8: SPC Blue 6/110 Defeated Damascus College 7/92 Liam Jess 27 Nick Martin 21 James Halloran 3/17 Evan Green 2/11 SPC Blue continued their winning ways with a well fought victory against Damascus College. With only 8 players SPC bowled well restricting Damascus to 92. James Halloran took 3/17 while Evan Green took 2/11. After being 2/8 SPC Blue recovered well with a fine innings from Liam Jess 27 and Nick Martin 21. BAS Grand Final: SPC Blue 7/109 defeated Ballarat Grammar 10/56 SPC Blue continued their dominance of the 2nd X1 Competition taking out the premiership in commanding fashion. Undefeated until Christmas, SPC Blue overcome two losses to host the grand final. SPC Blue lost the toss and was asked to bat first. Nick Martin and Lachy Snaith contributed a 36 run partnership with both players striking at a run a ball pace. A steady contribution at the end of the innings helped the team reach a competitive total of 7/109 of the allotted 20 overs. Nick Martin and Jed Millard had BGS in early trouble at 4/8 after 7 overs. Richie Dell demolished the tail taking 4/1 including a hat trick to finish the game. During the season Nick Martin stood out with his pace bowling and strong hitting. Lachy Snaith kept wickets extremely well and made some solid contributions at the top of the order. Liam Jess captained the side for the majority of the season and he also made some solid contributions with both bat and ball. The Millard brothers, Jed and Tom were great additions to the side in the New Year with their steady batting. Jed opened the bowling and Tom displayed fine skills with his leg spin bowling. Overall, a very successful season. Many thanks to all players who represented the college going back from last October to late March. Thanks to the parents that came to support their sons during the season. Thanks to Mr. Michael Busscher and Mr. Luke Corden for their organisation of teams.

Thanks to Mr. Chris Gleeson, Miss Tamara Westwood and Mr. Xavier Vearing for fixture and equipment organisation. And finally, many thanks to the maintenance team at St. Pat s that provided the boys with some fantastic turf wickets on both the Hill Oval and Main Oval to play on. 2 nd XI WHITE Coach: Mr Michael Busscher Players of the Year: Bowling: Jacob Coxall Batting: Paddy Collier BAS Round 1: SPC White 8/119 defeated Ballarat and Clarendon College 4/109 Batting first SPC White was able to score at near a run per ball which was always going to put pressure on the BCC batsmen. The majority of the SPC White batsmen were able to make a contribution again highlighting the strength of the Cricket Programme and the evenness of our side. Taylor Sutton 13, Jarrod Kemp 20, Jacob Coxall 23, Lachlan McIntyre 23, Laurence Cashin 16 and Lewis Compton 13 all showed their flair with the bat despite it still being early in the season. Despite only being able to capture two wickets with the opening batsmen both being forced to retire under BAS rules the bowlers did their job and restricted the run rate with the assistance of our fielders. Jacob Coxall 1 for 5 and Damon Prestwood 1 for 9 were our wicket takers. Training continues each Monday after school and I encourage all members of SPC White to avail themselves of this valuable opportunity to improve their cricket and put pressure on members of the First XI for their place in the side. BAS Round 2: SPC White 7/104 defeated Ballarat High School 6/98 In yet another game transferred to Victoria Park due to the non-availability of the BHS turf wicket at least we saw the sun for the first time this season! Bowling first SPC White was able to restrict the BHS batsmen to a score under 100 which was an improvement from our previous bowling effort. Taylor Sutton and Liam Jess opened with the ball for the first 6 overs with Taylor capturing one wicket and both boys restricted the score to 19. Lawrence Cashin was our main destroyer bowling exceptionally well to capture 3 wickets for 12 runs off 3 overs and thus break the back of the BHS batting line up. Lawrence was also ably assisted by Jarrod Kemp 1 for 12 off 2 overs and Lachlan McIntyre 1 for 6. With a score to chase down of less than 100, SPC White were always in the best position but as is the nature of the game of cricket you still have to make the runs!! Taylor Sutton opened the batting and batted very well to remain retired for 36 but his partners were failing around him. Recording three duck s in a 20/20 match meant that we were not able to record a victory until the 19 th over. Resistance to the BHS bowling attack came from Damon Prestwood 17 and Dom Slater 11 Not Out. In our next fixture I am hoping that we can both bat and bowl well in the same game as we encounter SPC Blue who also remains undefeated at this point in time! BAS Round 4: SPC White 3/148 defeated SPC Green 6/42

Once again this season our scheduled turf clash has had to be transferred over to a Victoria Park hard wicket so that a game can take place. Special thanks to Ms Tamara Westwood for all of her coordination in organising new grounds at the last minute. As well as this, Tamara also organises the transfer of umpires and the movement of players via busses. This is very much appreciated by both the coaches and the boys. Due to examinations we had only a limited number of players which led to a 7 a side game which was always going to be interesting with a number of players playing BAS Seconds Cricket for the very first time! Batting first SPC Green were able to last for 10 overs scoring 6 down for 42. Their best batsmen were Daniel Briggs and Daniel Rioli who both scored 8. The chief wicket takers for SPC White were Paddy Collier 2 for 6 off 3 overs, Jacob Coxall 2 for 6 off 2 overs, James Waller 1 for 0 and Rhys Scott 1 for 19 off 3 overs. With 20 overs of batting ahead SPC White only faced the danger of throwing their wickets away in a frenzied run chase. This was not to eventuate resulting in a 3 for 148 final score line. All SPC White batsmen were able to make a start and valuable contribution to the sides final score. Paddy Collier 27 retired, Euan Cahir 26 retired, Laurence Cashin 15, Lewis Compton 25 retired, Jacob Coxall 21, James Waller 14 and Rhys Scott 20 not out. Wicket takers for SPC Green were Daniel Rioli, Patrick Fairhead and Adam Coles who each took one wicket. BAS Round 5: SPC White 8/78 were defeated by Mt Clear College 6/165 In our final game for 2013 SPC White were handed a significant defeat at the hands of Mt Clear College. This sends a timely reminder that the Second XI BAS competition is not going to be easy and thus training and full commitment to each of our remaining games in 2014 is paramount to SPC White achieving success. Highlights of this match were: Richy Dell making his debut and scoring 17 not out, Paddy Collier scoring 22 and Jacob Coxall 17 and the most outstanding outfield catch taken by Laurence Cashin. Zac Healey, Connor McKee, Jacob Coxall, Paddy Collier, Laurence Cashin and Jarrod Kemp each took one wicket. BAS Round 6: SPC White 5/101 defeated by Ballarat Grammar 3/102 Batting first SPC posted a modest total of 101 off their 20 allocated overs. Jarrod Kemp top scored on 27 not out. He was assisted by Euan Cahir 19, Paddy Collier 11 and Zac Healey 11. Out in the field luck did not go our way with a number of catches being dropped thus allowing the Ballarat Grammar opener to remain not out 33 and leading his side to a three over victory. Our two wicket takers were Jed Millard 1 and Laurence Cashin 1. The highlight being a direct hit wicket run out by Euan Cahir. Thanks to Sam Cashin who helped field on the day and to Jed Millard who has joined the side this year. BAS Round 7: SPC White 9/ 110 defeated Damascus College 6/69 Batting first SPC White was led by Angus Dundon scoring a whirlwind 66. He was assisted by Sam Perry 13 with minor contributions from everyone else. 110 was a more defendable score from what we made the previous week so we knew that we had a game on our hands. Zac Healy opened the bowling and bowled outstandingly to capture 2/7 off his four overs. Jacob Coxall bowled equally as well and he captured 3/3 off three overs to really break the back of the Damascus College batting line up. Our other wicket taker was Laurence Cashin who took 1/8 off two overs to round out the Damascus College innings well short of the required total. BAS Round 8: SPC White 10/77 were defeated by Ballarat Clarendon College 2/79 Batting first our only batsmen to make any attempt to stay and make runs were Jarrod Kemp 22 and Lewis Compton 17 not out. With a small score to chase down Ballarat and Clarendon College did so in relative easy on a slick out field at Victoria Park to score 79 in only 10 overs. Our only wicket taker was Paddy Collier with 2 for 21 off his four overs.

2 nd XI GREEN Coach: Mr Rick Balchin Players of the Year: Bowling: Daniel Rioli Batting: Jonah Healey BAS Round 1: SPC Green 3/87 defeated Mount Clear College 10/57. In artic conditions at Mount Clear College newly appointed captain Daniel Phyland won the toss and elected to bat in a reduced overs match. SPC Green flew off to a great start with openers Daniel Phyland (28n.o) and Jonah Healey (23n.o) attacking the opening bowlers and both eventually retired not out to enable potentially some big late hitting by the middle order. This didn't exactly go to plan but SPC finished the innings with 3 for 87 of 15 overs. SPC Green then controlled the innings of MCC bowling them out for 57. Tom Williamson's leg spin was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 5 from only 2 overs. BAS Round 2: The SPC Green defeated Damascus College The clash was given as a walk over due to Damascus College having their work experience week. BAS Round 3: SPC Green 6/41 were defeated by Ballarat Grammar 5/68 SPC Green was put into bat to get the runs on the board. Jarman Reid (21) and Tom Williamson (10) set a great standard early and looked comfortable at the crease. With only seven players, the target was to bat overs to ensure a competitive score. With the constant loss of wickets we managed to bat 12 overs for a total of 41 runs. Minimal fielders created huge gaps for BG to pick off the runs and they were able make our total quite comfortably. SPC Green bowled very well and claimed a few scalps but the lack of fielders made it very hard for the bowlers to tie the batters down. Pick of the bowlers was Daniel Rioli with 2/8 off four overs. BAS Round 4; SPC White 3/148 defeated SPC Green 6/42 Once again this season our scheduled turf clash has had to be transferred over to a Victoria Park hard wicket so that a game can take place. BAS Round 6: SPC Green 138 Defeated Ballarat High School 37.

At Hill Oval BHS were put into bat and from the outset, looked troubled. Jonah Hill and Will Madden opened and after 8 overs the scores were 2 for 8. This dominance continued for the remainder of the innings. Each bowler came on with accuracy and flair and SPC Green eventually bowled BHS out for 36. Conner Dowie (30) and Jacob O Beirne (30n.o) were the pick of the batters as SPC Green cruised to a comfortable victory with 138 runs. Man of the match was Jacob O Beirne with 2 for 4 off two overs, and 30 not out. BAS Round 7: SPC Green 5/135 Defeated Ballarat Clarendon College 114 BCC won the toss and elected to bat on Vic Park 9. From the outset SPC Green bowled attacking and secured early break throughs. Daniel Rioli and Dan Clark were the pick of the bowlers with three wickets each, and bowled BCC for a total of 114. Jonah Healey set the standard with the bat as he blasted his way to 37, with late hitting a spectacle from Dan Clark (47), with 32 coming from one over. SPC cruised to victory batting 14 overs for 135 runs. BAS Round 8: SPC GREEN (118) lost to Mount Clear College 8/126. On Hill Oval SPC Green won the toss and elected to bat. On a two paced wicket, most batters found it hard to get in. After taking his time to get set Jonah Healey blasted his way to an elegant 63 as SPC totalled 118 after the 20 overs. MCC came out firing and were in poll position early until they lost a few close wickets, led by Jack Bochen's left arm orthodox claiming 3-16 from three overs. It came down to the wire with MCC claiming the victory on their last wicket in the 19th over. Junior Development Squad Coach: Mr Peter Brady Best Players against St Virgil s Hobart: Richy Dell, Mitch Tuddenham Once again our Year 8 development squad was assembled at the commencement of term four to embark on a six week training program in preparation for two fixtures in early December against St. Virgil s of Hobart and Melbourne school, St.Kevins. Each Monday afternoon after school, the group practised with great enthusiasm and a strong determination to further develop their skills and understanding of the game. The squad comprised of Tom Godson, Brandan Creelman, Mitch Tuddenham, Tom Hynes, Aaron Johns, Tom Walton, Jack Worthington, Austin Constable, Connor Ronan, Bailey Medwell, Fletcher Brennan, Harry Murphy, Will Ringin, Jordan Johnston, Richie Dell, Tom Lyon, Jack Lalor and Jackson Hammond. All boys are to be commended on their approach to training. There was a terrific spirit developed within the squad and obvious talent to be nurtured. The intention was for each player to participate in at least one of the two organised matches a 20/20 game against our Tasmanian visitors and then the annual 50/50 over match at St.Kevins. Unfortunately the St.Kevins game was abandoned before a ball was bowled after persistent rain throughout the day made the wicket and ground unplayable. This was a most disappointing outcome as it meant a number of boys weren t able to take the field to represent the College in Year 8 cricket. Our 20/20 fixture with the St.Vigil s boys was played here on our main oval which was of course in excellent condition as was the wicket. We are certainly very fortunate here at St.Patrick s College to have an extremely knowledgeable and competent curator in Mr.Peter Button. Peter puts considerable time and effort into the maintenance of our sporting facilities and his understanding of what is required to prepare a good cricket wicket is second to none. On a pleasant afternoon in early December, St.Virgil s batted first and scored 8 for 89 on a very lush outfield. Our boys bowled and fielded particularly well restricting the opposition s run-scoring and taking regular wickets. It wasn t until a year 9 and a year 10 student came to the crease in the final overs that their scored gained some respectability. Our bowlers did an excellent job maintaining an appropriate line and length through the majority of the innings, with Jackson

Hammond, Jack Worthington, Mitch Tuddenham, and Tom Walton doing very well. They were ably supported by some sharp fielding and safe wicketkeeping by Tom Lyon. Our run chase was always going to be quite challenging as the strength of our batting is the excellent technique and good concentration of our batsmen rather than power hitting. A number of the boys are going to be even better players when they develop more strength which will enable them to score more freely. The opening partnership between Richie Dell and Will Ringin was very good with both boys retiring and showing that they will be excellent players in the future. Richie played some fine strokes and compiled 24 runs while Will displayed a correct technique and good concentration. Mitch Tuddenham also batted competently, defending well and scoring at every opportunity. Towards the end of our innings Austin Constable showed some aggression to give our score a boost. After our allotted overs, we fell some 25 runs short of the opposition s total despite still having a couple of wickets in hand. For young cricketers, 20/20 cricket doesn t always allow enough opportunity for some players and I feel that in the future, at this level, no less than 30/30 cricket should be played. Overall, the effort against St. Virgil s was very pleasing considering they had a number of year 9 and 10 boys in their squad. At the conclusion of the game the boys were satisfied with their efforts and were looking forward to the big game against St.Kevins, however as mentioned earlier, this game was abandoned due to persistent rain in Melbourne after we had travelled down with a very eager group of players. All boys are to be congratulated on their efforts and attitude during our training program and also on the manner in which they competed against St.Virgils. It was a pleasure to be involved with the group and to have the opportunity to help them develop their individual skills and teach them a little more about the game. Well done to all boys and I trust that you are able to continue to enjoy playing cricket, despite the guaranteed ups and downs that the game presents from time to time. Peter Brady. Year 8 Development Coach. Junior House Cricket Coaches: Mr Jarrod Ryan/ Mr Gerard Willis/ Mr Mark Emerson/ Mr Stuart Harridge/Mr Michael Busscher Players of the Year: Galvin House Most Valuable Player: House Coaches Award: Keniry House Most Valuable Player: House Coaches Award: Nunan House Most Valuable Player: House Coaches Award: Ryan House Most Valuable Player: House Coaches Award: Round 1: Keniry 7/93 defeated Nunuan 5/92 Blustery conditions prevailed for the first day of play on the Hill Oval in the Keniry v Nunan house cricket match. Joel Cadman won the toss and had no hesitation in sending Nunan into bat. The Nunan openers made a solid start, forcing Keniry to wait until the ninth over of the match before they had their first chance to celebrate the taking of a wicket. The Keniry bowlers kept a tight reign on the Nunan batsmen. Genuine scoring opportunities were limited thanks to a consistent line and length. Luck was with the Nunan batsmen early on as a few mistimed shots managed to narrowly escape the Keniry fieldsmen. One of the highlights of the day was a brilliant one-handed caught and bowled by Mitch Jarvis. At the end of the first day, Nunan scored 5 for 92 off the 28 overs that Keniry bowled. Top scorers for Nunan were Mitch Emmlin (14 not out), Curtly Wilson (13), Ben Loughnane(12) and Jack Jones (11). The wicket takers for Keniry were Riley Polkinghorne (2/ 6 off 3 overs), Jack Parente (1/3 off 2 overs), Jacob Pawlowicz (1/4 off 2 overs) and Mitch Jarvis (1/16 off 2 overs).

The second day saw Jack Riding and Jai McHenry open the batting for Keniry. Mitch Nicholson took the new ball for Nunan and showed great pace. Lachie Butler got an early breakthrough, clean bowling Jai for four with the first ball of the fourth over. A steady stream of wickets saw Keniry floundering at 3/19 in the 7 th over. Luckily for Keniry, Joel Cadman strode to the crease and took charge of the innings, compiling a well hit 35 before he had to retire. Riley Polkinghorne played a great support role in their partnership of 59 for the fourth wicket. By the time Joel retired, Keniry had put a decent dent in the total they had to chase. A no ball in the 24 th over saw Keniry surpass Nunan s score. Both teams will no doubt rue the free runs they awarded each other through extras. Jack Riding contributed 10 to the Keniry total, while Lachie Payne added a dashing six runs late in the innings to help set up the win for Keniry. Wicket takers for Nunan were Lachie Butler (1/6 off 2 overs), Nathan Achison (1/ 4 off 2 overs), Sam Hope (1/16 off 2 overs), Jack Jones (1/2 off 2 overs) and Jackson Walsh (2/13 off 2 overs). Ryan 4/97 defeated Galvin 7/47 Galvin batted first on the Main Oval. The unpredictable bounce and speed off the turf wicket which many students had never played on before made scoring quite difficult. The Galvin batsmen dug deep though and occupied the crease for as long as they could. They reached a total of 47 in 26 overs a target they knew would be hard to defend. Jarrod Curran top scored with 11.Best for Ryan s bowlers were Hamish Lyle with 2 for 9 off 3 overs and Brock Reid with 2 for 6 off 3 overs. The next day, Ryan batted on the much more predictable pitch and smaller boundaries of Victoria Park. The run chase was completed early on and with some lusty hitting, the Ryan lads amassed a total of 97 off 18 overs with the best being Brandon Cooper hitting 27 including 5 fours, and Clancy Dickson 24 including 5 fours. Best for Galvin s bowing attack were Liam Taylor with 1 for 6 off 2 overs and Liam Phillips with 1 for 8 off 2 overs. Round 2: Nunan 8/73 defeated Ryan 7/61 In a one day clash due to Year 7 Parent Teacher Report Night the Ryan and Nunan Junior House Cricketers were rearing to go on the SPC Main Oval. Winning the toss and electing to bat the Nunan boys were hoping to get their side off to a great start. Openers Jack Jones and Ben Loughnane was a terrific pair with Ben going on to make 9 whilst Jack Jones was the main stay of the Nunan innings recording 33 runs. Jack was further assisted by Mitchell Nicholson 9 who was spectacularly caught by Brock Reid on 9 and Charlie Martin who chipped in with a quick fire 8 to finish the Nunan innings off at 8/73 off eighteen overs. Brock Reid was the chief wicket taker for Ryan claiming 3/12 off three overs, with great assistance through Seamus Murphy-McKay 2/13 off three overs and Hamish Lyle 2/13 off three overs. With 73 runs to defend the Nunan bowlers new that they had to bowl tightly and restrict the run chase of the Ryan side. Openers Matthew Aikman and Jack Burgess were moving the score along nicely until Matthew Aikman lost his wicket for 5. Despite Jack Burgess going on to make 33 he was unable to have any significant parters bat through the Ryan innings with him as the Nunan bowlers continued to take wickets and restrict the run scoring opportunities. In the end Ryan fell short of the mark recording a final result of 7/61 off their eighteen overs. Great bowling was exhibited by main wicket taker Luke Cullen 2/4 off one over and Lachlan Buttler 2/7 off two overs with single wicket takers Jack Jones 1/7 off two overs and Cade Rieniets 1/5 off one over assisting the Nunan side to a close but comfortable victory. Keniry 5/77 defeated Galvin 31 Gloomy skies loomed over the Hill Oval on Wednesday, 5th March when Keniry took on Galvin in the second round of Junior House Cricket. After losing the toss, Keniry were sent in to bat. The opening pair of Jack Riding and Dean O Brien looked settled after the first over, however, their dreams of amassing a big score were shattered when Dean was clean bowled by James Crilly for 1 in the second over. Riley Hucker joined Jack at the crease and the pair added 27 before Riley was dismissed by Tom Simpson for a solid 8. Jack Riding continued finding gaps in the field and running hard before a flurry of boundaries saw him reach 38, forcing him to retire. Matt Weybury and Nate Rieniets both kept the scoreboard ticking over with 8 and 8 not out respectively. After facing 16 overs, Keniry found themselves with a very defendable score of 5/77.
