1 SPC Sport Report Term 1, Week 5 Head of the Lake The 2018 head of the lake came close to being postponed due to forecast high winds but in the end proceeded. The rough conditions presented an added challenge for our crews, but in true SPC spirit all crews did their best on the day despite the difficult conditions with many of our crews on the tougher outside lanes away from some protection from the weed banks. The results were mixed but most crews performed to expectations. The highlight of the day was our all-conquering First crew winning the Head of the Lake comfortably from an unprotected lane 4 in very tough side water. SPC Swimming Carnival The swimming carnival certainly went very well last Wednesday. On a cloudy but fine day all boys competed well and got into the spirit of the day. A highlight was the continual chants and singing from the house areas. See below for the overall results and year level champions. Thank you to all the House Leaders who took on the responsibility of ensuring all students got to their event on time. Team 1 Rhys Mirtschin (lead), Oscar Jones (second), Ethan Kennedy (skip) won Team 2 Damon Carter (lead), James Molloy (second), Adam Hollingworth (skip) won Mr Garry Fitzsimons Cricket 1 st XI Cricket Our 1 st XI Cricketers defeated Ballarat Grammar quite comfortably last round. They are currently taking on BCC, if they win that we will host the final, starting on Friday March nd XI Cricket SPC Blue 2/117 defeated by Damascus College 4/122. Batting first SPC Blue put on a modest and defendable total of 117 in drizzly conditions. Adam Morrish 4 opening with James Richardson 47. Kento Dobell 59 showed power hitting until the final ball running himself out. As I said a total of 117 would be defendable IF we had 11 players in the field!! Again SPC Blue failed to fire with only 7 boys trying to fill all of the gaps on Hill Oval. Despit this it took Damascus until the 19th over to surpass our total.
4 Alex Byham was the best of our bowlers capturing 2/22, Hamish Irvin again captured a wicket 1/13 and Adam Morrish took 1/0. Next week is the final round of the 2017/2018 season and we play SPC Green who have remained undefeated all season. Mr Busscher SPC BLUE Coach Year 8 Cricket Match report SPC 10/102 def by BGS 10/113 With the SPC swimming sports occurring on the same day, the SPC Year 8 BAS cricket team entered the round two fixture against Ballarat Grammar with a significantly reduced playing list. The dual pitch format requires 15 players to run smoothly, 14 is ok, 13 means that you are one fielder short. We had 10. That meant that we had only 7 in the field, and just 6 when a wicket fell. However, the SPC boys put up a brave fight to restrict BGS to 113 from their 20 overs. The openers from BGS put together a very solid partnership of 50 runs, but then our boys reprised their chokehold of BCC from last week and only allowed one other batsman into double figures, embarrassing a few others with four ducks in their team. Confusion reigned between the BGS batsmen, as our boys prowled the field with conviction. Five catches were taken (no chances dropped) and three runouts effected. Not a bad effort with so few in the field. Will McCallum bowled very nicely at the death, taking two wickets in two balls and very nearly a hat-trick in his first game for SPC. The rest of the wickets were shared by Tristan Puddy, Lachlan Johns, Kai Davie, Darcy Keating and Alex Kerr. Over to our batsmen, and we were once again given a flying start by Kai Davie (25 ret) and Tristan Puddy (16). Tony Begbie (11no) chipped in at the end to get us close but we fell just short. Special mention must go to Tony Begbie, who captained the side for the day under very trying circumstances and did a wonderful job setting the field and encouraging his bowlers. Well done on a great effort lads, and good luck next week. Cheers Mark SPC 4/157 def BCC 3/86 The beginning of the BAS Year 8 cricket season always brings a level of excitement for the boys and this week was no different. We headed off to the lightning outfields of Victoria Park ovals 7 & 8 to face a Ballarat Clarendon College side eager to get their season off to a positive start. As keen as they were to start well, that did not eventuate as the SPC bowlers took an absolute stranglehold of the BCC batsmen. After 13 overs, there were only 5 scoring
5 shots played by their batsmen, with the rest of the score to that point coming from sundries. This spell of frugal bowling reached its zenith when Lachlan Johns took a double wicket maiden, closely followed by Sam Quinn taking a scalp of his own to ensure a low score from the BCC team. Our batsmen took a much more positive approach to the game on the other oval with Will Quinn (22) and Bailey Ryan (22 ret) getting us off to a flyer. Some lower order hitting from Alex Kerr (34 ret) who belted 5 fours and a six ensured we had a competitive total. Well done boys Mr. O Loughlin Junior House Cricket Junior House Cricket Report Keniry House Round 1: Keniry v Nunan Keniry 96 defeated Nunan 63 Glorious conditions met the Keniry and Nunan teams for the first day of the opening round of the 2018 House Cricket Competition. Keniry skipper, Adam Jirik, won the toss and strategically chose to bowl first. Tight bowling in the early overs saw Nunan reeling at 5/19 off 8 overs. Some wayward bowling allowed Nunan to bolster their total, eventually being bowled out for 63 off 18 overs. Leo Turnbull-Gent, Kade wells, Soren Anderson, Nyjo John, Lochie Johns, Tristan Roberts, Adam Jirik and Jake Chiswell all captured a Nunan scalp. Keniry were left with 10 minutes to begin their run chase. With runs on the board, Nunan felt confident and were rewarded with two wickets before the end of the first day s play. Keniry left the field at 2/4 off 2 overs, with the game well and truly in the balance. The second day was always going to be tougher given that the lads had spent all day at the swimming carnival. Nunan s bowling attack was relentless, snaring three more Keniry wickets in the first four overs of the day. The game was up for grabs with Keniry at 6/33 of 8 overs. Strong partnerships by Kade Wells (13), Soren Andrews (10) and Adam Jirik (13) saw Keniry steady and close the gap on the scoreboard. Keniry eventually overtook the Nunan total in the 12 th over. Tristan Roberts showed great flair in amassing his 15 runs. After 20 overs, Keniry was eventually bowled out for a total of 96, giving them a first innings win. It was a pleasure to be part of a game played in such great spirits. Congratulations to both teams on such a positive start to the competition. Round 1: Ryan vs Galvin Ryan 76 defeated Nunan 51 Blustery and cool conditions met the players as they undertook this round two, one-day fixture. Ryan won the toss and elected to bowl. Many bowlers observed good line and length to restrict Nunan to 51 off their allocated 13 overs. Clarke Alaimo, Lukas Pegg and Noah Ryan contained the flow of runs with very tight overs.
6 In reply, Will Lalor and Lukas Pegg got Ryan off to a handy start with both opening batsmen retiring after their allocated overs. After that point the run chase never looked in doubt with Noah Ryan and Lachie Wills seeing the team home with some blistering stroke-play at the end of the innings. Ryan moves on to a match up with Keniry next week on the Hill Oval. Round 2: Keniry v Galvin Keniry 3/72 defeated Galvin 45 Blustery winds made for challenging conditions in the second round clash of Keniry versus Galvin. Galvin won the toss and elected to bat. The Galvin openers looked comfortable until Kade Wells broke through with two wickets in his first over. Wickets kept falling at regular intervals throughout the innings, with Galvin eventually scoring 45 runs off 14 overs in their allotted time. Kade Wells claimed three Galvin scalps, Soren Andrews secured two wickets, while Leo Turnbull-Gent, Adam Jirik, Isaac Hucker and Logan Moffatt captured a wicket each. Keniry began their run chase aggressively, putting on a quick 20 runs before Jack Jeffrey (11) fell to a well judged outfield catch. Kade Wells made his intentions known early by striking two boundaries off the first two balls he faced. Kade eventually retired on 20. Adam Jirik (8 retired) and Leo Turnbull- Gent (8 retired) made valuable contributions to the innings. Keniry eventually overtook the Galvin total in the eighth over, going on to score 72 runs by the close of play. BAS Swimming The BAS Swimming Carnival was held on Thursday, Feb 28, at the Ballarat Aquatic Centre. Well done to 35 students who represented the College. Thanks must go to Louise Klopak and Jake Clark for managing the team. At the time of printing the overall results were not available. Students need to ensure they are in the correct uniform to participate. The general sport uniform is the navy blue polo top, navy shorts and white socks. Certain sports will require very specific clothing e.g. 1 st XI Cricketers require SPC Whites, SPC cricket shirt and SPC cricket cap. Students should check with their coach as to what is required. Also remember to wear sunscreen at all times. I wish all students and coaches the best in Always play the game in the right spirit, wear the correct uniform and respect the facilities, home and away. St. Patrick s College is steeped in sporting tradition and you are encouraged to add more chapters to our past endeavours.
