1 SPC Sport Report Term 1, Week 6 Head of the Lake After an eventful week in rowing the Senior Boys Head of the Lake was raced, for the second time, on Wednesday March 1 in glorious conditions. With Clarendon College and Ballarat Grammar challenging early the SPC boys certainly had to work extremely hard to finally pull away in the last 500m. The win was very satisfying for all involved in the Rowing Club. No doubt a lot has been learnt by the experiences of the past week but we congratulate the boys who represented themselves, their families and the College with much pride and humility. SPC were able to win the boys premiership on Sunday, February 26, this shows how much depth the College has and augers well for the future. The rower s attention now turns to the state and national regattas, we wish them all the best. State Championships Wrap On Saturday four SPC crews made the journey up the Hume to Nagambie Lakes for Victorian State Championships. The temperature was up and the competition was hot. The water conditions were near perfect and presented some great racing. The standout crew for SPC was once again our 3rds, winning Division 3 of the school coxed four event with our fourths crew rowing a great race to finish with the silver medal a length and a half behind the thirds. Well done to both crews and their coaches. The open 2nds finished a gallant second place behind the strong Ballarat High crew, which has been the lead boat in this division all season. The seconds continue to prepare for a good showing at Nationals in three weeks time at Penrith NSW. The open firsts were disappointed not qualifying for the A final. They rowed a controlled race to win the B final ahead of St Kevin s. The crew has now put its focus towards being very competitive at Nationals and is training hard. Well done to all. A reminder that the Rowing presentation dinner is scheduled for the 20th of March. More details regarding this event will be forwarded to everyone later this week or very early next week. Cheers BAS Swimming The 2017 BAS Swimming Carnival gave great opportunities and experience to all of our new and continuing swimmers. There were a number of outstanding performances across all age groups for our boys. Ben Gibcus, in his first BAS competition, broke the 2009 BAS record for the under 12 s 50m Freestyle in a time of Swimming Vice Captain, Kaiyn Humphries, swam a personal best time in his Open 50m Freestyle. Finishing only 0.4 seconds off the BAS record. Finally, the boys under 16

2 Division A freestyle relay (Aiden Wijbenga, Josh Stahl, Rhys Elliot, Josh Canny) put in an outstanding effort to hold off a very strong team from Ballarat Clarendon College. In the overall team results. St Pat s took home second across the junior, intermediate and senior age groups, finishing in second place behind Ballarat Clarendon College in the overall team placings. Thank you to St Patrick s staff members Miss Tina Benoit, Mr Gavin Webb, Mrs Louise Klopak, Mr Chris Gleeson and Mr Keenan Waterbury for all of their administrative work and support for our swimmers in their training and in the lead up to BAS. James Elford (Co-ordinator of Swimming) McNeil & Benoit Cup On Monday, March 6, the preliminary rounds of the McNeil (Senior Boys) and newly named Benoit Cup (Junior Boys) were held at the Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre, Wendouree. Before play commenced Sharyn Canny (BAS Executive Officer) held a short ceremony to acknowledge Rob Benoit, father of SPC Staff Member and Sport Administrator Tina Benoit, and the role he has played in developing many young tennis players in the region. To be recognised by having a trophy named in your honour is something to be very proud of. The boys who represented the College were Hugh McManus and Max Olver in the juniors and Broden Haintz and Marcus Tilley in the seniors. All boys progressed to the finals, which were held on Thursday, March 9. Cycling The eleventh edition of the Otway Odyssey confirmed its status again as the most challenging yet rewarding mountain bike marathon in Australia, courtesy of the thirst-building single track terrain. The premier 100km race continues to attract an impressive lineup of riders with over 1,200 mountain bikers taking to the Forrest trails, with the event also catering for novice and junior riders. Over 200 riders took on the 30km Odyssey Rookie designed specifically for novice mountain bikers and developing juniors. This year St Patrick s College was represented with a number boy s and their parents making the trip to Forrest on Saturday morning 25 February to compete in the Rookie event. First across the line was Lachlan Huf, closely followed by Joel Boucher who was second with Nicholas Huf finishing fourth overall in the Rookie event. The Boys finished first, second and third in the junior under 16 age division. Well done to all the boys who completed in this event and thank you to the parents who support their son s interests.

The Junior House Sport in particular is a great way for Year 7 s to meet new friends, get to know their teachers and participate in a sport they may never have played before. SPC Athletics The SPC Athletics Carnival will be held on Wednesday March 22 here at the College. The House Assemblies were held on Tuesday Feb 28. After the completion of the SPC carnival other BAS Athletics inquiries can be directed to John Richards or myself. Western Highway Late Bus The college will continue to offer a late bus service, leaving at 6:00pm, for students who participate in after school co-curricular activities here at the college, not just sport. Application forms are available from Student Services in the ERC. Once registered students need to place their name on the late bus register no later than recess on the day of travel. All inquiries please contact Glenis in the ERC. This service will not be offered in the first and last week of term. SPC Sport Uniform All sport uniforms can be purchased at the College Shop. Students need to ensure they are in the correct uniform to participate. The general sport uniform is the navy blue polo top, navy shorts and white socks. Certain sports will require very specific clothing e.g. 1 st XI Cricketers require SPC Whites, SPC cricket shirt and SPC cricket cap. Students should check with their coach as to what is required. Also remember to wear sunscreen at all times.

Cricket Follow SPC Ballarat Cricket on Facebook for detailed reports and live scores. 1st XI BAS 2-day competition 1st XI: Round 3 SPC 7/347cc (45 overs) defeated BHS 8/80 (29.1 overs) A very interesting deck greeted us for day one of the round three 2-Day clash between SPC and Ballarat High School. Unfortunately, this game lost a bit of its sting before the toss with three late withdrawls from the BHS side leaving them with just 9 on the field. SPC won the toss and electing to bat first piled on the runs early before Connor Ronan (12 from 16) fell to a loose shot. This brought the Jack duo of Riding and Lalor together again the two destroyed the BHS attack putting on 180 runs from just 144 balls before Riding fell for 81 (from 76 balls incl. 7-fours and 3-sixes). Lalor then combined with Richy Dell (40) and then debutant Isaac Wareham (30) before posting a superb 124 ret from 89 balls including 14-fours and 4-sixes. SPC finishing fast with Jai McHenry (37 from 23) to post a mammoth 7/347 from 45 overs. The second day of the clash saw BHS head into chase on a very dead track and initially the put up a strong fight, resisting the SPC openers of Godson and Tuddenham and moving to 0/25 after the first 10 overs. However the introduction of Jai McHenry (1/8 from 4) triggered an inevitable collapse with Jack Lalor (2/29), Richy Dell (2/16), Curtly Wilson (1/2) and wicket keeper Tom Lyon (1/3) all getting amongst the wickets. It was far from a clean effort however with several sharp but normally takeable catches going down throughout the innings, but with 347 on the board, the win was never in doubt, however heading into the Grand Final it will be these sorts of things we must improve upon. 2 nd s Cricket SPC Blue 9/102 were defeated by SPC Green 8/113 In the final game of the home and away series SPC Blue has had its bubble burst going down in a fantastic game of cricket against the boys from SPC Green. Once again a magnificent wicket was produced and the weather was in our favour for a very competitive game between the two SPC sides. Bowling first SPC Blue were unable to break the opening partnership which posted over 50 runs between them. Dylan York bowled very well once again capturing two wickets for 8 runs off 3 overs. Our other wicket takers were Josh Findlay 1/10, Declan Murphy 1/14 and Dylan Davies 1/30. With almost a run a ball required for the run chase a combination of big hitting and well-crafted singles was going to be required. Unfortunately SPC blue were unable to maintain any lengthy batting partnerships and went down to SPC Green by 11 runs. Sam Cashin led our batting chase scoring 27, Dylan Davies

6 made a solid 16, Sam Tipper showed some class with a 14 and Kyle Faulkhead made a crafty 11. As I have stated previously SPC Green outplayed the SPC Blue boys so the Grand Final effort in two weeks time will have to see a return to form for all boys. Next week there is no game so the Grand Final will be played on March 9 and at this point in time it looks like the game will be played at St Patrick s College. Mr Michael Busscher SPC Blue Coach Yr 8 BAS Cricket Round 2 BHS 1/107 def SPC 5/105 Over to Victoria Park for Round 2 of the BAS junior cricket competition and on a hot day BHS won the toss and decided to bat first. They posted a very competitive total with two of their top three batsmen scoring plenty of runs and retiring. Riley Kenny was the lone wicket taker, providing some hope early in the innings, removing one of their openers thanks to a very good catch by Connor Madigan. Lots of no balls and byes hurt our chances of a successful run chase. Riley Constable and Isaac Hucker got us off to a good start but regular wickets cost us dearly. Three run outs proved costly but we were still alive right up until the last ball with Jas Singh needing 3 off it to win. Unfortunately he was caught and bowled to leave us an agonizing two runs short. Riley Constable finished with 27, Isaac Hucker 18, Jesse Cairns 24 and Jas Singh 20 scored valuable runs. Round 3 SPC 1/85 def DC 4/64 We took a long bus trip to Mt Clear College to play against Damascus in Round three of the BAS junior cricket competition. Damascus won the toss and put us in to bat on a very fast and small outfield and our openers Riley Constable and Thomas Latrobe wasted no time getting stuck in. Thomas scored a very rapid 21 before being bowled by a very good delivery, while Riley retired late in the innings on 32. Lots of extras pushed the score up to 85 off just 10 overs. The Damascus innings started in a similar way to ours with plenty of boundaries but Bryn Thompson came on, removed one of the openers, and it all went south for DC after that. Deegan Willingham took and Connor Madigan one to halt DC s run chase and left them 21 runs short. Well done boys on a great win. Mr. O Loughlin

7 House Cricket: Ryan House 7/129 defeated Galvin House 10/108 Hot and windy conditions on the Main Oval were experienced by Ryan and Galvin House cricketers for the first game of Junior House cricket competition. Ryan won the toss and decided to bowl on what looked to be a fast wicket. Sam Newcombe and Spence Jenks opened the bowling attack with Spence taking a wicket in his second over. Will Quinlan picked up the second wicket and also took two excellent catches, one of which dismissed Galvin s Lachie Constable who battered brilliantly in his opening stand, making an impressive 34 runs. Noah Ryan bowled tightly and he also executed a great run out. Jyson Fawcett for Galvin made a respectable 22 before being bowled out by James Liston. Throughout the afternoon, wickets were also taken by Zac Kilburn, Tom Liston, Bailey Ryan and Noah Maggi. A great start by both teams and encouragement of one another throughout the afternoon was a highlight of the game. On the second day there was a real sense of eagerness by both teams to get underway and obtain a win for their House. Bailey Ryan and James Liston for Ryan established a solid start with the bat, Bailey retiring for 35 not out. The top order batted extremely well before a middle order collapse, which startled Ryan and gave the Galvin team momentum and confidence. With the ball, Ryan Densley didn t get a wicket but he bowled extremely well, bowling leg spin with the figures of 0/4 off his two overs. Lachie Constable was destructive in his bowling, grabbing three quick wickets, including a chance for a hat trick. It was great to see Sam Quinn pick up a wicket after a couple of hard earned overs. Despite the great efforts in the field, Galvin was defeated by Ryan. All boys are to be commended for their efforts, sportsmanship and levels of skill in what was an enjoyable first round of cricket. Nunan House 1/ 90 (15 overs) defeated Keniry House 10/85 (25 overs) Blustery conditions greeted players on the first day of our split first round match. Keniry captain, Aaron Cadman won the toss and elected to bat. A solid start by openers Declan Hart and Jack Richards looked promising for Keniry until Declan was given out LBW with the score on 12. Some elegant stroke play from Jack Richards, including a six from a delivery that was deftly helped on its way over backward square, saw the score click along to 30 before Aaron Cadman was dismissed. The game was evenly poised until a flurry of Keniry wickets had them in trouble at 6/35 off six overs. The Nunan players sensed blood in the water and did all they could to try to ensure they would get a bat before the day was out. Jackson Leech had other ideas and dug in bravely with great support from a disciplined Logan Moffatt to deny Nunan a bat. Some cavalier hitting form Adam Jirik late in the innings saw Keniry finish up all out for 85 on the last ball of the day. Best batsmen for Keniry were Jack Richards 17, Jackson Lech 15 and Logan Moffatt not out 7. The pick of the bowlers for Nunan were Cooper James 1/10, Tony Begbie 2/6, Josh Chandler 1/6, Dan Lalor 1/2, Josh Keddie 1/3 and Riley Fisher 1/4. The second day s play got underway with Dan Lalor and Nick Cushing opening the batting for Nunan. Aaron Cadman and Darby Frazer, the opening quick bowlers for Keniry, looked threatening in their first spell but couldn t manage to breach the defences of Dan and Nick.

8 Keniry had to wait until the eighth over to make their first breakthrough when Nick Cushing lofted an on drive in the direction of Adam Jirik who was up to the challenge of deftly moving to take the catch. Keniry leg spinner, Jackson Leech, was the only Keniry bowler to claim a wicket. A master class in stroke play was provided by Dan Lalor who dispatched any loose deliveries to the boundary on his way to an unbeaten 35 (retired). Cooper James (23 not out) was also impressive with an array of shots to all parts of the ground. Nunan were successful in chasing down their target in the 15th over of their innings, giving them a comprehensive and well-earned victory.

SPC Sport Report Term 1, Week 2 Welcome back Hello to all and welcome back to the 2017 school year. It has been great to see all the students return eager to participate in Term 1 BAS and House Sport.
