PSA Results - SUMMER TERM, 8th &9th March 2013 Vs Guildford Grammar Team Result Score Comments Basketball 1st V SC Win It was a solid all round performance from the Scotch 1sts against Guildford on Saturday. The boys had worked hard to iron out some issues in the team structures and consequently executed their systems to good effect. Defensively the boys worked hard which was very pleasing while at the offensive end of the floor the guards shot the ball well. Arresting runs of turnovers is an area that Scotch needs to improve upon. Ruben Proud led the Scotch scorers with 17 points with Conor Hey adding 14, Nic Argento 11 and Yannick Livingstone and Aman Nasir 10 each. This reflects an equal spread of scorers which augers well for the team for the remaining games. 2nd V SC Win The 2nds first win was a hard fought one especially against a much improved opposition. All the boys put in a gutsy and determined effort which was a very pleasing aspect of this game. Scotch still have lots of work to do but improvements are showing with every game. Again there was great leadership from Alex Triglavacann with Riley Kelvin and Harry yet again giving a solid performances. Thanks Liam and Alex from the first team for giving us the extra help. 3rd V SC Win th V SC Win Grit. Zest. Endeavour. Grace. These are words not usually mentioned when describing a game of 4ths PSA Basketball. But that is exactly what was on display for the lucky crowd of two on Saturday March 9th, 2013 at the Scotch College outdoor courts. The match was delayed due to Guildford s difficulty finding the courts, and once it was underway the delay continued on the court, with Scotch taking eight minutes to post its first score. Nevertheless, with this shot the proverbial floodgates burst wide open and Scotch surged to the lead, up at half-time. The game remained tight for the second half until a signature Nina-fest saw the Scotch team take a commanding eight point lead. At this point, the referee turned up and Mr Graziotti was finally able to abandon referee duties to go and coach. In a suspicious sequence of events, as soon as Mr G gave up the referee s whistle and returned to the bench Guildford went on a run and managed to whittle Scotch s lead back down to two points. Thankfully Scotch s defense would hold on, and the team retained its unbeaten home record with a hard-earned two-point victory. To name individuals would be pointless, because this was a triumph for teamwork itself, but special congratulations must be made to Andrew Fung, who had a sterling debut for the 4ths. SC1 V SC Win SC2 v SC3 v Rrobin RRobin 10A SC Win B SC Win The boys played strongly in the first half, holding a 10 point lead at half time. In the second half, an injury and with some players in foul trouble, the Scotch team was left with only one on the bench. A strong fight back from Guildford in the final quarter and a huge 3 from in the final few minutes gave Scotch a lead. It came down to the final few seconds for the boys to clinch the win by one point. 10C SC Win D RRobin 10E SC Win a GG Win b SC Win The hard work the boys have been putting in at training finally paid off with the team s first win of the season. After being down by 3 points at half time the boys rallied to come back for a 7 point victory. The win came from the team s ability to perform lock down roles on Guildford s better players and improve their shooting in the second half. Playing without two of their main guards in the backcourt all the boys worked together to get the ball up the court through impressive passing and running. There were lots of positive signs in this game with the boys starting to understand and utilise the skills that they have been practicing at training. 9c AC Win 48-18
8a GG Win b SC Win The 8Bs had a great victory against Guildford. Malachi Cornwall almost single handedly won the game in the last quarter. 8c GG Win d SC Win a SC Win 42-5 The boys played very well jumping to an early lead with tenacious defence up in the lane and up on the ball. The boys had control of the game from the first tip and didn't let go until the final siren. It was a solid effort for all the boys but they need to continue working on their discipline as a team. 7b SC Win 27 to 8 It was an excellent four-quarter effort by The 7Bs. All players made a solid contribution offensively and ran out the game extremely well. Congratulations to Jack Buller on his impressive debut performance for the Bs. 7c SC Win Cricket Result 1st XI DRAW 5/241Dec-9/214 Scotch was sent in on what looked like a very green wicket and put together 30 for the first wicket, before Bloch was caught for 17. Bevan Bennell and Declan Hardisty put on 80 runs before Dec was dismissed late in the day for 27. Scotch ended the day on 2/130. Quick runs were needed on day 2 and Scotch eventually declared at 5 down for 241. Bennell cracked a magnificent 127 in the innings. Scotch got steady wickets throughout the day but just couldn t get the 10th wicket with 3 overs left. Guildford finished 9 down with Cameron Green again the standout bowler with Scotch now must win their last remaining 3 games to have any chance of winning the Darlot Cup. 2nd XI GG win 5/174-8/170 Scotch lost the toss and was sent in to bat in humid conditions. George Gooch and Nick Steinapreis opened the batting and took the score to 32 before Gooch was out leg before wicket for 7. Ryan Murphy joined Steinapreis but he was bowled shortly afterwards. Matt Grice was out the next ball and Scotch was then 3/48. Nick was batting patiently until on 28, he was bowled. Henry Bantoch was batting with authority until he hung his bat out to dry, resulting in Scotch collapsing from 0/34 to 6/75. Spin twins Adam McLaren and Harrison Langsford came together and showed great determination and put on a fine, gritty partnership of 57. Langsford was bowled for a patient 16, while Adam made a fine 50 not out. James Porter put on a swashbuckling 16 doing the team thing. Batting Scotch 8/170 Nick Steinapreis 28 Harry Bantoch 16 Adam McLaren 50 no Harrison Langsford 16 James Porter 16 no Ryan Murphy and Harry Bantoch opened the bowling for Scotch, but found it hard to get a break through. Spin twins Harrison Langsford and Adam McLaren bowled well in tandem to contain the Guildford batsmen and finally grabbed a wicket each. Hayden Dick and Harry Bantoch came back and grabbed some wickets. Three great catches were taken one in the deep by Hayden Dick and two superb catches taken by James Poole in the gully and Adam McLaren in slips. Guildford passed Scotch s score at 5 / 174. Bowling Harry Bantoch Harrison Langsford Adam McLaren Hayden Dick Scotch s batting let them down again through a lack of concentration. The fielding was brilliant as usual and Scotch s bowling was really good at times. One thing I like is that the guys never give up which is a great quality to have in sport.
10A SC Win 9/ An unpredictable Guildford team turned up ready to play. They had the whip hand early and took to the opening attack. A good come back with the introduction of spin brought the boys back into the game, although self acknowledged poor fielding allowed the opposition to tick along. Whilst Guildford never looked like exploding the 158 was a solid score, closer to 190 on other grounds. All three spinners bowled with great confidence and the results came. A poor start and early wickets piled on the pressure early. With opener Mac Brady laid low with a back injury and a crippling headache hitting Hayden Wade, Mac stepped in to play the knock of the year. 54 off 138 deliveries crushed the spirit of a fiery Guildford side. Quick wickets after the break and a middle order collapse saw the team stumble badly. With 3 runs needed and one wicket left, Wade came to the crease and helped Mark take the points. It was not Scotch s best effort as a cricket team but a huge learning curve and a massive mental test over come for the boys. A big improvement is needed next week against Hale. 10B GG win 9/ Scotch won the toss and put Guildford into bat. They had some early success including an excellent outfield catch from Fraser Bulleid and an excellent bowling performance from James Wilson (2/4 off 4 overs). Other notable performers were Fraser Bulleid who got his first wicket, Nick Todd (2/11), and David Tomkin who bowled really well without luck. Unlike Guildford every Scotch player bowled their two overs and so their were some expensive overs. Guildford made 9/126 off their 25 overs, which seemed a relatively achievable total. Scotch batted poorly however with too many players going for the big hit before they were settled. Scotch lost 5 wickets in the space of a few overs for the addition of only 15 runs. Matt Inman was the notable exception and he batted patiently for 54 while the wickets tumbled around him. Nick Todd s innings of 14 was exciting but over too quickly, while Dylan Woods scored 12 and Oliver Cownie 11 not out which ensured that the tail wagged. While Scotch got to within 10 runs of the Guildford total they had thrown away too many wickets in the top order. Man of the match was Matt Inman. Middle Cricket 9a GG win 8/120-7/116 Scotch won the toss and batted first and made a poor start. After 5 overs the side was 2 for 10. Matt Todd joined Alex Crump at the wicket and they put on a terrific partnership. They both played some fantastic shots mixing powerful stroke play with quick singles to place the Guildford bowlers under pressure. They put on a 66 run partnership before both were out in short time trying to accelerate the run rate even further. Todd finished with 39 and Crump 30. Scotch lost a steady flow of wickets in the final overs and it wasn t until Braden Kerr joined Brodie Stephenson at the crease for the last four overs that another partnership was established. Brodie batted very well to finish with 20 not out and he was well supported by Braden, 10 not out. Scotch made 116 in their allotted overs, which would prove a competitive target. Zaine Welsh and Campbell Williamson opened the bowling and both produced very good spells. They were disciplined in the areas they bowled and they limited Guildford s run rate in the early overs. Two wickets to Braden Kerr in the 16th over had Guildford in trouble at 5 for 41. Despite a couple of superb run outs in the final overs Guildford s number 6 batted superbly to guide his side to victory in the last over. Scotch fielded well and all of the bowlers should be commended for the line and length they maintained throughout the innings. 9b SC Win 3/147-5/81 8a SC Win 4/ It was a great team effort and some excellent bowling allowed the team to earn a deserved win. With an outstanding batting effort, 3 players retired with Christian Benny and Hamish Mckenzie setting the benchmark with classy knocks. The team focused on holding onto the momentum set to the bowling innings with good intent with Jack Monoghan achieving early success. The introduction of spin took the game away from Guildford with Tom Menzies and Hamish ripping through the bottom order. A tough game awaits against Hale next week. 8b SC Win C SC Win 3/96-3/46 7a SC Win b SC Win 1/73-7/45 Tennis 1st VIII SC Win 24-0 Guildford presented Scotch with a challenge to focus on playing good aggressive tennis. The boys put into practice a strong serve, volley game. They dominated from the start and kept the pressure on, leading 12-0 at the change over with a final result of 24 sets to nil. 2nd VIII SC Win 20 to 4 Returning after a lengthy break the 2nds tennis team hosted Guildford. The boys got off to a great start being up at the break 9 sets to 3. There was some excellent singles play from Ben Hansen to win his match 6-1, 6-1 and the dynamic pair of Geordie Woodhams and Tetsuya Yakota contributed to the score line. It wasn t until after the break that Scotch really lifted, winning 11 of the possible 12 sets on offer. Overall it was a great effort by all of the boys. 3rd VIII SC Win 22 to 2 4ths VIII SC Win 17 to 9
10A SC Win 23 to 1 Coming off the long weekend the Scotch boys were keen to get back into some matches. The boys started very strongly against the Guildford side and demonstrated impressive hard court tennis. The boys won all of the first 12 sets with good wins going to Bailey at number 1 singles and Charlie at number 3. In the second half Scotch continued to dominate coming out strongly on top with a 23 sets to 1 victory. 10B SC Win 24-0 The Scotch boys started very strongly against the Guildford side and demonstrated some very impressive tennis. The boys were up 12 sets to 0 after the first half of matches with strong wins going to all the boys, with many winning without dropping a single game. The boys continued their form into the second half and ended up winning 24 sets to 0. 10C 10D 10E SC Win v CC 9a SC Win b SC Win c 9d 9e v AC V AC 8a SC Win The 8A tennis team continued their winning form with a 126 to 21 victory against Guildford on Friday. There were a few team changes, allowing all players to play both singles and doubles in higher positions than they normally would. The boys stepped up to the challenge and were never headed against a weaker opposition. Tom Warburton, Cameron McVeigh and Charlie Wandby were particularly ruthless, dropping only one game each in their combined singles and doubles matches respectively. The team has three tough matches to finish the season and will need to be at their best to defeat Hale this week at home. 8b SC Win c SC Win d 7a SC Win b SC Win Scotch had a decisive win over Guildford 96 to 30. Walker Daley showed leadership on the court supporting his teammate during their doubles match. Hamish Bruce was clever with his shot selection and Lawson Young bounced back from a defeat last week to have a significant win, 10 games to 2 against his opponent. The boys sportsmanship was impressive even when they realised they were going to dominate the competition. 7c SC Win Volleyball 1sts SC Win 3-0 It was a dominant display by the boys, showcasing what they can do. Scotch started well and took the first two sets easily. Strong defence at the net complimented a great run of serves by Sam Blakie, and Scotch s offence shone as Tom Gorter destroyed some spikes, set up nicely by Halden Horko. 2nds GG Win 2 to 1 3rds SC Win 3-0 4ths v SC 10B 10A SC Win B v SC 4ths 7/8/9A GG Win 3-0 The boys were very disappointing this week. There is lots to work on at training this week in the lead up to the game against Hale this Friday. 7/8/9B GG Win 3-0 7/8/9C TC Win 3-0
Waterpolo 1sts SC Win 19-0 It was a great performance by the boys producing a 19-0 result over Guildford. The boys stuck to the game plan throughout and built a solid platform with exceptional defence limiting Guildford to only a handful of opportunities. Lach Pethick was a standout scoring some fine goals and nullifying the Guildford attack. Rhys and Charlie Grant also played prime roles in securing the win. A great step moving forward into crucial games in up coming weeks. 2nds SC Win 13 to 1 3rds Draw 9 to 9 4ths RR The 4ths convincingly beat Wesley and only just beat Hale in the round robin at Scotch 5ths HS Win 6ths Draw 9 to 9 7/8/9A SC win 14 to 4 7/8/9B SC win 7/8/9C SC Win /8/9D SC Win 8 to 4
