Brighton Grammar played some extraordinary matches against Wesley at Scotch Glen Centre, BGS came away with 7 to 5. Congratulations to Harrison as he has well deservingly won the most improved out of the teams. A mention to Oscar and Victor for their enthusiastic effort and their good team work in their doubles match. And one more shout out to Jules, Leo and Charles for their extremely long match. A solid performance by Victor and Harrison has secured the win for BGS in the end, very positive signs for the season ahead. Men of the match: Dan Hurd 17 retired, Sam Flockart 2 for 2 off 4 overs Ryan Agg won the toss and elected to bat on a beautiful batting wicket at Haileybury. Openers, Lachy Zissis (14 retired) and Henry Munnings (2), were solid in their defence, but could have been a little more proactive in their approach on a ground that did not give full value for shots. The middle order s positive initiative allowed the BGS innings to gain momentum at the backend. Dan Hurd (17 retired) and Josh Badge (14) in particular were outstanding in their ability to put the pressure back on Haileybury s bowling unit. The rotation of the strike forced the bowlers to change their lines and lengths, which then allowed Hurd and Badge to take advantage of the loose deliveries. Haileybury started well in their reply, keeping the good ball out and rotating the strike continuously, which kept the BGS bowlers from building consistent dot ball pressure. To the bowler s credit, they again toiled all day, but failed to bowl consistent line and length. Sam Flockart was the exception, finishing with the sensational figures of two for two off four overs. Early wickets will be our goal next week, which we will continue to work on at training during the week.

Man of the match: Callan Cummins 18 not out and ½ off 2 overs Jono Hick (12) and Lachy Miller (19) got BGS off to a flyer due to positive running between the wickets. Harry Harte (7) and Oliver Lally (21 retired) picked up where the openers as punished any loose bowling. Aaron Aloi (7) and Toby Marsden (7 retired) kept the runs flowing, before Nathan Moore (21 retired) hit his first three balls to the boundary. Callan Cummins (18 not out) finished our innings with a couple of fours, to help post a very competitive 155 off 30 overs. After the innings break, a different team appeared to being playing. Scotch batsman picked apart our bowling attack due to bowlers being unable to hit their line and length and some poor fielding. Callan Cummins was the standout with the ball, taking ½ off 2 overs, while Nathan Moore (1/10 off 2 overs) and Aaron Aloi (1/16 off 2 overs) picked up the other wickets. Geelong Grammar won the toss and batted first, setting BGS a score of 112 to win off 20 overs with only 10 players. Our fielding was not as outstanding as previous weeks but the boys were given a very difficult task of managing with one short on a bigger ground than usual. Sam Funston lead from the front and bowled extremely well from the start, taking a wicket with his first ball and ending up with 2 wickets in total for the day. Tom Redpath also challenged the opposition with his fast bowling and was rewarded with 3 wickets. Our batting struggled at the beginning but Harrison Fulton steadied the ship, retiring and then coming back in to then get run out on 24, top scoring for the day. Sam Funston also put in a gallant effort with the bat and his powerful hitting helped him score a quick fire 20. Tom Redpath was unlucky not to get us across the line at the end, finishing on a handy 9* to back up his good excellent bowling spell.

Keen to get back on the winners board, the 7As were breathing fire at Grimwade. Yet again the Tonners lost the toss this time by Tom Howden and we fielded first. It took until the introduction of Bowen in the 13 th over, striking twice dismissing the opening batting pair with two ripping legbreaks. He had a third in his next to have MGS on the ropes at 3-55 after 15 overs. Jamie Hope came on from the other end and had three wickets in the space of nine balls. Ben Edmondson bowled tight and we restricted MGS to on a very small ground at Grimwade. We knew we had to get runs in the top order and Lachlan McCluskey tasked himself with the job, scoring 36 from 37 balls. At the 10 over mark we were 0-43 after both openers had retired. Elliot Perkins (16) survived a close shout for caught behind before smacking three boundaries. Jamie Hope (17) also found the boundary pushing the run rate up. It was Noah Hartman however who turned the game when we required six an over for the final 10 overs. Hartman smashed 37 from 26 balls, with three fours and three sixes in a breathtaking innings. Jules Lohan and Luke Travers both past 20 and the Tonners collected the victory with three overs to spare. It was a very smart team batting performance ensuring the bad balls would hit the boundary, whilst knocking singles off the good balls. The BGS boys returned after the bye to play Melbourne Grammar at Fawkner Park. Flynn, captain for the day won the toss and elected to bat. This decision turned out to be beneficial as we got off to a flying start, with openers Tom Rohan and Archie May both retiring once they passed 25. Flynn and Darcy then came in, Flynn hitting some great shots and retiring on 29 after only being in for 3 overs. Darcy continued to bat well, assisted by Cam McKenzie and Liam Coleman who all retired. BGS lost our first wicket in the last couple of overs and ended up on 209 after 25 overs. The MGS batsmen batted well quite early however our ability to constantly get a wicket continually but us in control of the match. MGS ended up on 122 after the 25 overs with some great bowling performances from the entire team. This provided BGS with a convincing win and our first of the season.

The 7C1 cricket team had their first match on the Mitchell Oval. We won the toss and elected to bat first. After the loss of an early wicket both Jack Stewart and Lachlan McCurry constructed very strong innings displaying a range of powerful shots. Tom Stretch, Tom Jackett-Smith and Samsom Adams (11) continued to push the score along by making the most of some loose bowling by Scotch. A few cameos at the end by Noah Hunt (8) and Jackson McKenzie (10) saw us push the total to over 200 for the second consecutive week. Oscar Noble provided an early breakthrough in the second over but Scotch dug in after that and put a high price on their wickets making it hard to obtain a breakthrough for the bowlers. Jordan Secatore and Thomas Stretch provided the crucial wickets when needed and Tom Jackett-Smith bowled quick to claim another two middle order wickets. Declan Bakker and Jackson Mckenzie bowled tidy to help restrict Scotch to 9/98. Another fantastic team performance to keep the 7C1 team undefeated! This week we faced strong competition as we were heading to Scotch College in Hawthorn. Once we arrived, we watched Scotch complete their warmup. It did not intimidate us, but made us more pumped to get in the pool and beat them! Throughout the day, many Middle School swimmers had the opportunity to participate in many relays and individual events due to the Year 9 s being on camp. This allowed for some great swims from the team, such as: the U14 relay team winning the medley and freestyle relay, and a great 50m and 100m freestyle swim by Graeme Gouws (Y8). Even though we were defeated by Scotch College, it was another week of great swims by the Brighton Grammar swim team, keep up the good work! With David Canta selected for his time in the 1sts our top 4 in the order had the challenge of moving one spot up the order. These players acquitted themselves well being victorious in 4 out of the 6 rubbers. We went down in 2 out of the 4 tie breaks for the day. The lower order finished 21 games to 34.. In the end 4 tie break points going our way would have seen the result reversed. Hugh Moir was successful in both his sets Harley Chessell had epic tie break battles at Number 1 winning a doubles but narrowly losing his singles. Other winners for the day, all engrossing matches, were Ajay James, James Capp and Adam Larkin

After an eventful bus trip to Geelong and a circuitous trek around the grounds of Geelong Grammar we found ourselves pitted against a strong but equally skilled team. Games were equally poised in many cases and turned on sudden death outcomes. Maxim Coste and James Tsindos fought a long doubles match to win out at 6 to 5. Charles Yao played some excellent shots only to miss out at 4 to 6. Alex Reilly and James Semenov both took advantage of play and returned service with well-judged placement of the ball and exciting volleys. Overall all players displayed excellent team spirit, patience and a positive attitude. Haileybury defeated BGS 3 sets 33 games to 9 sets 61 games. After a few wins in the previous weeks, we met our match. Our doubles games were an even field, with two wins to each side. Findlay and Hill having the best success in a 6:1 match with Findlay managing to put away many of rallies. Whilst the competition looked fairly even in our singles matches, it was tough to get to the end of each game and be just pipped after time in deuce. Special mention to McDougall who made a fantastic comeback to win 6:3, Heaton who finished off his game despite having a sore back 6:1 and Bourke who had a tough game against a fierce opponent to only just miss out in the end. Thankyou boys for being early with enough time to warm up. Let us see what the games following this week have install. It was fantastic to see the great sportsmanship the BGS boys had today, they played their best and even kept going in the face of a challenge. The doubles matches were evenly drawn with two wins each and a special mention the Cheng and Bessell who finished off the game with a 6:4 win. The competition in the singles was higher than in previous weeks, which was great for a challenge. Excellent work by Elliot in keeping his opponent on his toes with some fantastic serves and a special mention to Jack who managed a 6:2 win. Whilst we still have many areas to keep refining in training, it is great to see the boys taking pride in improving their shots.

The later start meant the sun was well and truly up by the time the 7C1s arrived on the BGS Middle School tennis courts on Saturday. The boys only had a quick hit before beginning their matches. Tim Shaw was new to our team this week, and successfully won his singles match; however, after that initial victory the rest of the team were unable to overcome the skill and power of the Haileybury players. Many of the games went to or deuce but each time the Haileybury students won the point in the end. It was a great effort by BGS in the heat, but by lunchtime it was clear we would only win one set overall. No matches for the next two Saturdays for 7C1s. With an early start at BGS the boys were ready to go. This week we welcomed a new member to the team, Massimo Brassachio, and indeed a valuable one. Although taking on a 6-2 defeat, Massimo and Will Field were sensational partners as they showed great effort and teamwork in their game. Will Stebbing and Isaac Lee impressed in the doubles as their serving had improved a great deal, helping them in their game. In the singles, Will Field and Isaac Lee were the only victors, both with 6-0 wins. A great game by both Isiah Delana and Bright Zeng showed there is some great potential. The boys will get a much deserved break this weekend.

MS1: It was a tough first half for MS1 losing majority of the half, but then the boy knew there was more in the tank and came back strongly in the second half to win. Good job to the try-scorers Stirling Findlay, Max Absalom and Ned Walker. It was a good all-round team effort. MS2: MS2 came out with another win holding an undefeated record so far this season. As the game progressed, BGS s defence was unbreakable with us coming out on top with a score of 7 tries to 5. Try-scorers for Brighton included Josh Hudghton with three, Max Linder and Edward Greenslade. MS4: This weekend MS4 faced off against Xavier College at one of the Yarra Bend parks. BGS played very well and took the win home with a scoreline of 6-1. BGS's defence was a brick wall, but our scoots have improved over the weeks. Try scorers: Lachie Barlow (3) with Andrew Penca, Harry Whiffin and Peter Tsiakos all taking 1 try each. MS5: MS 5 snagged its first win for the season against Xavier at Yarra Bend Park on the weekend, with the final scores 7-6. Great work to Tom Burnell for attacking offensively the entire game and Zach Carr for being reliable on the wing. It was a team effort. Try scorers: Zach Carr x2, Sam Sweet x2, Josh Jarick x2 and Sam Stewart. MS6 had a great game, especially in the second half. As a team we moved the ball very well on both sides of the field. We also rucked the ball up straight which led to many tries. A couple of things we could improve on is when we are in defence we need to move forward slowly as a group to fill in the gaps. Also, when we are on offence we need to have a dummy half ready as soon as we get touched to play the ball on quickly. Try scorers: Ben Sullivan 2, Zac Landsman 1, Nick Verga 1, Dougal Bland 1.

This was a well-deserved win, and should give us the much needed confidence and energy to take down other top tier teams in the APS competition.
