1 BOWLED OVER Scotch College Cricket newsletter Vol. 9 No Feb 2017 OPENERS SET UP SIXTH STRAIGHT VICTORY FOR SCOTCH FIRST XI Walking to the crease to open the Scotch innings for only the second time this season, Will Lovell (Left) and Charlie Loveridge (Right) were determined to get their side off to a solid start. Their partnership fell just four short of a century when Charlie was dismissed for a stylish 41. Their stand proved foundational for the Scotch reply to Xavier's 195. Will went on to record his half century before also losing his wicket but the pair had ensured that those who followed could take advantage of a tiring attack. Noah Croes and Captain Will Sutherland took the team past the Xavier score with no further loss and the first innings victory was secured. Now placed securely at the top of the APS ladder Scotch remains the only undefeated team and is in the box seat for an assault on the premiership. However, the boys are very aware and constantly reminded that there is no place for complacency. There is still work to be done and improvement to be made. Coaching staff are doing all they can to keep the boys grounded and focussed on the further development of their skills and the next challenge - Geelong College this coming weekend on the Scotch Main oval. GO SCOTCH!! VISITORS FROM KING EDWARD S SCHOOL Four boys from the UK arrived recently for their annual exchange. They and their Scotch hosts were invited to morning tea with Mr. Batty and TIC of cricket Gary Peckham who reportedly enjoyed the profiteroles on offer even more than the boys! 2 MATCH REPORTS FROM 10/11 FEB First XI (John Murphy and Jay Baker) Scotch 7/274 ( Croes 68, Lovell 54, Charlie Loveridge 41, Sutherland 34, Cheah 23no) defeated Xavier 195 (Sutherland 4/15, C.Loveridge 2/29, Cormack 2/48, Lovell 2/53) Xavier won the toss and elected to bat in beautiful conditions and amongst a very vocal, but respectful large home crowd. Will Lovell struck early having their attacking opener well caught at slip by Will Clark. While we beat the bat regularly in the next hour of play the opposition managed to survive and get a partnership going. Charlie Cormack struck with the score at 51 and we managed to keep it tight in the lead up to lunch with some consistent line and length bowling. Charlie Loveridge was called on to bowl following an injury to James Gray at training and he got a very handy caught and bowled just after the break. Xavier now had their most dangerous strikers at the crease with the score at 3 for 80. On cue the opposition raised the intent and runs flowed easily as they looked to take the game away from us. Will Sutherland battling some soreness took the ball with the team in need and delivered a crafty spell of bowling that turned the match on its head. Firstly he knocked over an aggressive boundary hitter LBW, then a caught behind to Croes and finally a clean bowled and the score had transformed from 3/118 to 6/124 and Scotch was back on top. With the game on the line Xavier dug in and while we continued to keep the pressure on it was clear that the wicket was definitely batsmen friendly. Charlie Cormack came back into the attack and broke the partnership with another quality catch to Clark in the slips. As day one drew to a close we tired a little and the opposition put together a handy partnership for the 8th wicket. As per usual in cricket there was one twist to come. Charlie Loveridge found the edge and the skipper Sutherland held the catch at slip and at the close Xavier were 8/186. After our match saving partnership in the previous game the boys were well aware of the dangers of taking the tail end batsmen lightly. With good intent we closed out the Xavier innings on day two having them all out for 195 the wickets to fall going to Lovell and Sutherland. Charlie Loveridge and Will Lovell opened the innings showing composure and clever shot selection against one of the quickest APS bowlers. They ran well between the wickets and played everything along the ground not allowing the opposition a chance. We passed 50 without loss and it was clear that the confidence was growing as Loveridge played some classical drives and Lovell worked the ball off his pads with ease. Scotch went to lunch 0/76 and in a very strong position. After the break the score ticked over nicely before Loveridge was out for 41. At 1/96 Noah Croes came to the crease and he immediately showed his intent to take on the spinners and rotate the strike. Lovell past 50 to the joy of his team mates but unfortunately was dismissed not long after to a blinder of a catch at slip. It was a quality innings and we hope to see many more before the year is out. Sutherland joined Croes and the leaders of the team took control of the game. The runs flowed with some excellent stroke making as Croes passed 50 and Sutherland crunched some nice boundaries. Scotch passed the total two wickets down for a very good victory. With around 40 overs still left in the day we pushed on in the thought of sneaking an outright result. A few wickets fell in the process as Sutherland was dismissed for 34, Bangs for 19 and Croes for a very well made 68. Matt Cheah made a breezy 23no and we declared 75 runs ahead. Will Fraser-Smith got his first wicket in the 1st XI which was a bonus as the game petered out. With Xavier 1/31 at 5.00 pm, it was clear the outright was near impossible, so play ended with Scotch comfortable victors on the 1st innings. Overall it was an excellent performance by the boys who need to keep the training standards high and strive to improve each and every week. Next up is Geelong College and with the competition so even and cricket being a funny game we must be at our best at all times. SECOND XI (Mark Rivett) With our confidence up due to our last 3 matches resulting in good wins we were relishing another tough, hard game against Xavier. Xavier won the toss and elected to bowl, openers Bromell and Stubbings again got us off to a good start until we lost a wicket at 46. First drop Lloyd and Stubbings put on a handy partnership until our second wicket feel at 90. Scotch were 2/95 off 26, any team would take those figures at the start of the day. Scores that followed our second wicket were 3, 10, 4, 0, 5, 1 and 0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As usual our bowling and fielding was very good. Openers Rubins 1/23 off 10 and Wynne 0/23 off 10 kept the Xavier bats in check. In his come back game Nehme had 2/16 off 9, Adams had 1/10 off 4, Morrisby had 1/18 off 6, Roseby 0/13 off 4 and captain Easton apart from a superb direct throw run out had 1/6 off 4. However defending 128 is probable but most time hardly achievable especially when the lads know that at 11 am we were 2/95 and at we were back in the sheds all out for 128 eating all the delicious fruit supplied by the Carson s. THIRD XI Scotch 10-65, 23.3 Overs (Luke Adams 12, Oscar Lund 12, Hugo Nash 7) were defeated by St Kevin s 4-145, 19 Overs (Charlie Shaw 2/11, Daniel Sheather 2/39) The 3 rd XI faced a tough assignment after being sent into bat on a dewy Saturday morning at Yarra Bend. While Luke Adams (12) batted patiently at one end, wickets fell regularly at the other. Adams was eventually dismissed in the 10 th over with the score at Though Oscar Lund (12) and Angus Manson rallied to put on 17 for the 6 th wicket, Scotch slumped to the unimposing total of 65 all out off just 23.3 overs. Unfortunately, the bowlers fared no better than the batsmen. St Kevin s passed our total in less than 10 overs without the loss of a wicket. Nevertheless, Daniel Sheather (2/39) later took two wickets in two balls after Jonty Lupson made a sharp stumping. Charlie Shaw (2/11) was also tidy with the ball. The game however, was a lopsided contest and gives the boys plenty to think about for next week.

3 10As (Tim Shearer) St Kevin s College 7 for 170 def. Scotch College 169 The 10As had a disappointing day at the office, losing to St Kevin s College in a tight match on the Meares Oval. Winning the toss and electing to bowl was not the best decision made by the coach, and we struggled to come to terms with some excellent early bowling from the St Kevin s frontline bowling. Whilst the conditions weren t favourable, they certainly weren t impossible, and some very poor decision making by our batsmen early was the first indication that we had not come to play with the right mindset. We need to be able to bat to all conditions, and leaving the ball well is an option that we consistently refused to take when the ball was moving around early. As the conditions improved and batting became easier, we started to work ourselves back in the game. Will Stevenson (48) played impressively with good shot making to all parts of the ground. He received good support from Tom Buchanan (25) and Jack Aird (26), but we paid the price when neither of these three managed to capitalize on their good starts. A constant flow of wickets saw us lose 6 for 46 in a very poor batting display, and we were all out for 169 in the 47 th over. Needing to bowl St Kevin s out to win the game we started strongly. Angus Parnham (1 for 22 off 10 overs) and Tom Hunt (3 for 31 off 8 overs) bowled superbly with the new ball. In the 26 th over St Kevin s were 5 for 58 and we were right on top. Sadly, in keeping with our game day mindset, our bowling really fell away and we consistently bowled poor deliveries that were rightly dispatched. Tom Buchanan, however, bowled superbly (2 for 16 off 10 overs). We need to follow Tom s example and get back to 11 out of 12 when we are bowling or we will pay the price again. St Kevin s had two batsmen who went on with it and capitalized on their starts, and they rightly won the game. This performance, which had a touch of arrogance about it, served as a great reminder that sport is a great leveller and that we ultimately get what we deserve. Here s to a big week at training where we address our deficiencies with honesty and hard work, and to a much improved mindset when we play Geelong College down at Geelong next Saturday. Will Steventon 48, Jack Aird 26, Tom Buchanan 25, Tom Hunt (3 for 31 off 8 overs), Angus Parnham (1 for 22 off 10 overs), Tom Buchanan (2 for 16 off 10 overs) 10Cs Despite a less than impressive turnout, the 10Cs took to the rugby oval to play the first game of the year against the rivals from across the ditch. With a severely undermanned team due to a variety of reasons, we just had to make do with who we had. Skipper for the day Trent Mackenzie won the toss and bowled first and we started in brilliant fashion landing 2 early wickets in the first two overs. Trent and Tom Gordon produced a fine spell of early bowling with Tom Gordon the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets. Our fielding was particularly impressive with 9 of the 10 wickets being caught. This fielding effort was lead by our captain who made sure all the boys were in the right spots and concentrating in the field. We matched St. Kevin's slow start by one of our own, with a few early run outs causing us to be 4 down for not very many. Once again it was left to skipper Trent and Josh Downs, who played probably his best innings of the season, to chase down the small total of 70. By rotating the strike and picking off singles, the pair got us to 12 runs needed before they both retired. Tom Gordon then came in and blasted a quick fire 12 runs to finish the game off. A good start to this year for the 10Cs. Hopefully we can have a better turn out next game. Special mention goes to the 2 boarders who filled in for us. Much appreciated! 9As After a weekend of trials and a week of preparation and training, it was great to get off to a good start against St Kevin s College. Having lost the toss, we were put in to bat on what looked like a good, grassy wicket. Our two openers, Jack McNair and Hugo Boreham batted with patience and determination before Jack was dismissed LBW. Next in were Henry Hayman and Griffin Schultz who are highly talented cricket players, but unfortunately were dismissed in quick succession by full and wide half-volleys that were steered into the safe hands of cover fielders. Jesse Caston had to play a captain s innings which he did. He was the top scorer of the day making a solid 31 runs. He was accompanied by Varun Sinha who batted extremely well for his first game for Scotch College making a valuable 28 runs before being dismissed, caught behind. As a team, we did well to post a total of 148 runs in 43 overs. Knowing that we didn t have the biggest total on the board and did not bat out the allotted overs, the second half of the match was always going to be about taking wickets and putting St Kevin s under pressure through sharp fielding. We got off to a strong start with James Townsend and Jesse Caston bowling with discipline and intent. Scoring was difficult and we kept them to 2 runs per over for the first 15 overs of the innings. Henry Hayman came on next for an impressive, and match-winning spell of 3 wickets for 25 runs in 10 overs. He bowled with pace and hit good areas. Nicholas Bennett bowled extremely well and put an immense amount of pressure on the opposition, ending up with figures of 1 wicket for 5 runs in 5 overs! Yash, Griffin, Varun and Peter all bowled well to restrict the batsmen from scoring throughout the innings. Shaun Yue got a lot of turn off the pitch and the opposition battled to play him as a result. Jesse and Jack took two world-class catches in the field to help secure the victory. St Kevin s College were eventually bowled out for 126 runs. It got close in the end, but the Scotch boys never gave up and gave it their all - a good win to start the new year!

4 9Bs Scotch 9-125, 30 Overs (Sam McLellan 31*, Sam Harle 27) defeated St Kevin s 4-107, 30 Overs (Emil Ali 1/12, Reef McInnes 1-14) The 9Bs faced off against a strong St Kevin s side on what was a sizzling hot Friday afternoon. Observing the warm playing conditions, large ground and lightning fast outfield, Scotch won the toss and elected to bat. Our top order made an unconvincing start, as a number of ill-disciplined shots led to three wickets falling in quick succession. Sam McLellan s (31) arrival at the crease was a steadying hand, as he combined with Charlie Smith (9) to rebuild the innings. Exhibiting patience and temperament, Gill Roseby (17) playing an anchor role in his partnership with James Braddy (7). Sam Harle s (27) big hitting proved invaluable as he moved our total past one hundred. Posting the relatively competitive score of 9/125 from 30 overs, our boys were cautiously optimistic as they took the field. Joe Balderstone was economical early, while Reef McIness made the first breakthrough after Gill Roseby took a solid catch behind the stumps. Though St Kevin s kept wickets in hand throughout their innings, they certainly struggled to match the required run rate. Sam Harle bowled 5 consecutive overs of tidy off-spin, while Emil Ali s fast-medium bowling was ever-threatening. Despite a late innings flurry of runs, St Kevin s only managed a total of 4/107 from their 30 overs. Winnings by 18 runs, the 9Bs can be very proud of their efforts! 8As Two previously undefeated sides came up against each other as we travelled to Melbourne Grammar School early on Saturday morning. Skipper Alex Meggitt won the toss and decided to bat, and things looked shaky when we lost Luke O Brien and Tom Kelly early. At least Tom now has a batting average for the season, as it was the first time anyone has got him out! Alex then shared a long and steady partnership with Hamish Francis, taking the score from 2/10 to 3/67, when Alex was caught in the deep for 30 pushing the run rate along. Scott Beilby and those who followed then came in on a mission for quick runs as the end of the 32-over innings approached. Scott scored at a run a ball for 9 before being bowled by one that kept low, but then it was Jago Dick who shared a partnership of 45 with Hamish to take the score to 5/115, with Jago cleverly targeting the short boundary at third man for 27 runs off just 22 balls. Hamish also fell for 27. Sam Darcy and Henry Brown fell quickly chasing quick runs, but Hugo Birks and Tom Fish kept the scoreboard ticking over until the end, leaving us on a very competitive 9/130. The old adage that catches win matches proved to be true, with some excellent catches held by Scotch s fielders. Opening bowler James Meggitt, trying to catch his breath between overs at fine leg, started the trend with an excellent running catch off the bowling of Tom Steventon. This catch was followed by a diving effort by Hugo Birks and some bullets which were calmly held by Sam Darcy and Scott Beilby. Jago and the captain also held on to catches and there were two run outs to dismiss dangerous batsmen. James took one early wicket then returned at a very crucial point of the match. Grammar were always on target to reach the victory total in terms of run rate, so we just had to take all 10 wickets to make sure the game didn t slip away. With great support from Tom Fish (2/7 off 4 overs) and one wicket apiece to Scott Beilby and Henry Brown, James wrapped up the tailenders, finishing with 3/22. A great team performance to continue the A team s undefeated run for the season. 8Bs Scotch 3/114 (Robenstone 20*, Kunaratnam 19*) def MGS 96 (Bromell 2/7) Having won the toss, Captain Harry Jane had no hesitation in batting first on the Melville Oval's turf wicket. With many of the boys playing on turf for the first time, the Scotchies struggled to score as easily on the slower, less bouncy surface. However, Ethan Kunaratnam (19*) and Charlie Fergusson (14) combined for a 35 run partnership with Hamish Furphy (15*), Sam Meyrick (11) and Harry Robenstone (20*) contributing late runs to take Scotch to a competitive total of 114 for the loss of only 3 wickets. A tidy bowling performance was required in order to defend a small total. Leading the way were Will Edney (0/6 off 4 overs), Ed Fyfe (1/6 off 4) and Harry Mounas (1/9 off 3) making it difficult for the MGS batsmen to score with full and straight deliveries. Despite the good bowling, at times our fielding let us down with several chances not being taken including multiple catches and a missed run out. It didn't prove costly however as MGS were bowled out for 96 to give Scotch an 18 run win, with Hugo Bromell (2/7 off 3) the pick of the bowlers. 8C Reds Back for the first game of the season, the 8C Red's took on Carey at Bulleen in what was a very tight and exciting contest. We lost the toss and Carey elected to bat first. Opening bowler Hunter Rives bowled very well to kick things off and put a lot of pressure on the Carey batsmen, whilst Matthew Baird was excellent in his two overs picking up 2/10 taking crucial wickets. We look to have Carey on the ropes as they were 9/77, due to some excellent bowling by Hughie Byrne-Jones who took a miraculous 4/13 off 2 overs, however a loss in concentration and some poor fielding allowed Carey to get to a respectable total of 102 after 22 overs. Our opening batsmen, Phillip (15) and Simon (11*) got us off the great start and we were cruising after the first 8 overs. Padgham was the pick of the batsmen making a superb 25*, and we looked to be making the runs comfortably as we were 4/66 after 10 overs. However, a middle order collapse saw our run rate plummet, and it got down to us needing 8 runs off the last over to win with 1 wicket in hand, with Hughie B-J and Baird at the crease. Hughie played remarkably well hitting a fantastic boundary and some nice cricket shots to get us within 3 runs, but unfortunately he was runout trying to scamper home for a second run on the second last ball. A terrific effort at the death by our batsmen, but it was clear a loss of concentration at the end of our bowling overs, and middle order collapse were to blame for the loss. Nevertheless, there were some great performances and we have plenty of improvement left in us!

5 8C Blues The 8C Blues had a cracking win against Melbourne grammar on the rugby oval at scotch. Grammar elected to bowl, and we were sent in eager to make a good total on our home turf. Tom Law and Lachie Permezel started off superbly, with a 70 run partnership. The good scores kept coming from then on, with the boys making an impressive 192 off 24 overs. Plenty of singles were run, and loud calls were heard across the Mckendrick; this was an impressive innings. In the field the lads rallied as a team, didn't allow concentration or focus to slip, and restricted Melbourne grammar to just 7/62 off the 24 overs. JP, Tom Worstelling, were impressive with ball in hand. Whilst James Blair took catch of the century behind the stumps. All round, fielding was good, which was most pleasing considering it was the boys first hit out since the end of last year. Well done boys! 7As Scotch (7 173) defeated Melbourne Grammar School (7 147) The 7A Red team hosted Melbourne Grammar School for their first game and were eager to set the tone for the season with a victory over the old enemy. Skipper Tom Sutherland won the toss and, as confident captains do, elected to put runs on the board. Henry Gray, a late call-up to open the innings, quickly settled and batted with poise and intelligence to post a fine 37 not out. Will Townsend entered the fray after the fall of an early wicket and, in a rare display of power and precision, proceeded to blast the MGS attack to all points of the wagon wheel. Townsend retired undefeated on 35, scored in better than even time. His innings include four boundaries and two enormous sixes. Captain Sutherland, although struggling a little with timing, batted himself back into form through fierce concentration and excellent cricket sense. Sutherland eventually retired undefeated on 35. Holding it all together at the top of the order was Tom Murphy who batted with signature positivity and aggression in defence to rotate the strike as the hitters went about their work. Charles Ward and George Burney made valuable and entertaining contributions late in the innings to help their team to a formidable after 29 overs. Scotch began the defence of their total in fine form, with strike bowler Burney taking 1 8 in a fast and accurate opening spell, while constantly challenging the batsmen with his signature late in-swing. At the other end Henry Meggitt was equally impressive, and even more miserly, conceding just five runs in his first four overs to put MGS well and truly behind the eight-ball. Will Hucker continued to apply the pressure with an excellent first-change spell, as did captain Sutherland who tied down an end late in the innings, just as MGS were beginning to get a whiff of the impossible. The Scotch bowlers were ably supported in the field through some good catching and fine outfielding, with both Gray and Sutherland contributing to run outs on the Player of the Match: Will Townsend back of powerful returns from near the boundary line. The MGS innings eventually ended 26 short of victory and Scotch had prevailed in their first true test of the season. Battle-hardened, and no doubt better for the experience, the Scotch boys will work hard in practice in coming weeks to continue to lift their performance in key aspects of competitive cricket at this level. 7B Gold It was a spirited effort from the 7B Gold side that unfortunately were beaten by 5 runs by Melbourne Grammar. Fielding first, we allowed all players to bowl at least 2 overs and did very well on a short boundary to restrict them to off 26 overs. Unfortunately the players were slow out of the blocks in their innings with a couple of players spending a fair amount of time at the crease without scoring much (batsman 2&3). The team also need to work on their running between the wickets as they were overly cautious. The run rate picked up as other players got to the crease but ultimately we left it too late scoring Stand out performances: Max Kelly 3-15 in his 3 overs and then a quick fire 11 and upped the running between the wickets allowing us to get back into the game. He captained the side for the afternoon and did a great job. I'd like him to train with the 7A blue team again this week. Docky Creek kept wicket and then bowled 2 overs getting 2-5 and 6 off of the 3 balls he faced at the death Ned Crummy scored 24, and showed genuine potential. The boys are looking forward to their next challenge!
