8 GENERAL INFORMATION DRESS Team coaches and managers are asked to ensure that all players are dressed in white or in club/school shirts as approved by the Wairarapa Cricket Association. It is desirable for all players to wear hats/caps for protection against the sun. STUMPS Each team is required to provide 3 stumps, two bails and a ball. For all games on artificial pitches, each team should provide one set of stumps for artificial pitches. GROUNDS Coaches and managers are requested to ensure that all players are well behaved during matches and show respect for the grounds. We are grateful to the Schools who provide us with grounds to use, they are not obliged to do so. Please ensure that all rubbish is removed. DEFAULTS Where a team cannot be fielded, the opposing team must be notified, through the Draw Convener, of the default and then via club or school convener at the earliest opportunity. COMPLAINTS These should be addressed initially to the JCB committee. DRAW/POINTS TABLE Are available via the CricHQ link on the WCA website 8 Junior Cricket Handbook Season

9 PLAYING INFORMATION ALL GRADES Junior Cricket must encourage full participation and equal opportunity for all players. Too many coaches are categorising players as a batter or a bowler too early and subsequently consigning these players to a specific position in the batting order and/or not bowling them, and consequently the player is not being developed to their possible full potential. Coaches are strongly requested to ensure all players develop their skills and talent during their time in the JCB grades. LAWS OF THE GAME: All cricket is played under MCC laws of cricket except for additional cricket rules that apply in the grades as stated below. TEAMS: Team changes for any reason during the course of a match are allowed provided that the opposing team s coach or manager is notified. BOWLING: All players are encouraged to bowl over the wicket. Teams are encouraged to bowl 18 overs per hour (where 6 ball overs apply.) NO BALLS: The ball must bounce more than twice to be called a NO Ball in Traditional cricket. Any delivery which passes, or would have passed, above shoulder height when the striker is standing in his or her normal position shall be called a No Ball. Any delivery that passes on the full above waist height of a striker standing in his or her normal position shall be called a NO Ball. Throwing: Please see below on laws and rules surrounding throwing in matches. POINTS: All results to be ed to Hansel Wiramanaden. No results, No Points! Every Saturday the teams playing in the Hardball Grade will be playing for a trophy which is Up for Grabs on a weekly basis. Whoever holds the trophy retains it until they lose a game. It is at that stage passed on to the winning team. They then become the new holder of the trophy. FIELDING: In all Grades of cricket no fielder may stand closer than 10 metres from the strikers wicket on the on-side or in front of point on the off-side until the ball has been played by the batsman. GEAR: Each team is to supply 3 stumps, 2 bails and their own ball. TIME: Final over of Friday evening play must commence before 7.30 pm in all matches. Final over of Saturday morning play must commence before pm in all matches. 9 Junior Cricket Handbook Season

10 LAWS AND RULES FOR KIWI CRICKET Safety is first and foremost after this always play to get the best possible game for the children These rules have been put together by the Wairarapa JCB with the aim of ensuring player safety and that the game is as action packed as possible. These rules are also consistent with those in the Kiwi development programme being offered in our schools. Kiwi cricket games are played on Friday evenings starting at 5.30 pm and should finish no later than 7.00 pm (the maximum number of overs allowed per innings is 10). The original rules took effect from 29 October 2004 and have been amended 1 February From 1 February 2016 the following additional rules will apply: Each team will use two batting tees for each innings. One tee will be placed on the off-side, one on the leg-side adjacent to the batter, both with balls already mounted. When a wide is bowled, the ball off the respective tee for the wide (off-side or leg-side wide) will be hit on that side of the wicket (the bowled ball will be held by the wicket-keeper and placed on the respective tee from which the other ball has just been struck). 1. A bad ball is one which is: a) wide or b) high or c) falls well short of the batsman or d) dribbles or rolls to the batsman 9. Free Hits: In the case of a bad ball, the ball is placed on a hitting tee and the batsman is given a free hit. This free hit must be played forward of the batting crease. 10. Extras: Should no runs be scored from the tee, an extra is credited to the batting team s score. 11. Fielding: At the end of each over, fieldsmen rotate one position. No team may field more than eight players at a time. No player may be within 10 metres of the batsman. 10 Junior Cricket Handbook Season

11 12. Scoring: The total number of runs is divided by the total number of dismissals to get the team score. Should you decide to vary these rules, please ensure that both coaches have full understanding and have agreed to these changes before the match starts. LAWS AND RULES FOR SUPER 8 CRICKET Super 8 Cricket is played on Friday evenings commencing at 5.30pm and has a 7.30pm deadline. The original rules took effect from 29 October 2004 and have been amended 1 February With effect from 1 February 2015, the previous Super 8 Cricket grade has been split into two distinct divisions Super 8 & Incrediball (see Laws and Rules for Incrediball Cricket). 1. 13 If a bowler throws the ball the umpire must firstly give them a warning in order to correct the action. (If there is a wicket on the delivery it will not be counted, runs or extras however will be scored to the batting team) If the bowler then throws another delivery one of two things can happen: A) The bowler can be removed from the bowling crease (if another bowler finishes their over then it is counted as a full over to both bowlers) B) The bowler can move up the wicket (roughly two thirds away from the batsman) and underarm the delivery. The same rules apply re no balls for number of bounces and height of delivery passing the batsman for the under arm delivery. 10. LBW: Does not apply but players should be made aware of the infringement 11. Fielding restrictions: No fielder may stand closer than 10 metres from the striker s wicket on the on-side or in front of point on the off-side until the ball has been played by the batsman. 12. Batsmen: If the batsman loses his wicket on any legitimate delivery other than the first ball they face, they shall be dismissed. Batsmen can be out caught, bowled, stumped, run out, hit wicket, handling the ball, hitting the ball twice or obstructing the fieldsman. If a batsman reaches 25 they must retire at the end of the over in which they scored their 25 th run, and cannot return. 13. Scoring: A generic scoring sheet template is provided for all matches. LAWS AND RULES FOR HARDBALL CRICKET Hardball cricket is currently the highest grade available to primary schools and is coached on the principles of the total game. These rules have been put together by the Wairarapa JCB with the aim of ensuring both player safety and that we meet the requirements of the local Association as regards playing deadlines. Hardball Grade games are played on Saturday mornings starting at 9.00 am with a 12 noon finish deadline. These rules took effect from 29 October 2004 with amendments to take effect from 1 February With effect from 1 February 2015, Hardball Cricket will be split into two distinct grades in the second half of each season. The first half of the season will be a round-robin competition to establish a top and bottom division. In the second half of the season these divisions will be known as: Hardball Championship Hardball Premiership. 1. For the Premiership Grade 70% of the distance between the off stump and the return crease and 50% of the distance between the leg stump and the return crease is called a wide. Any contact by bat with ball is NOT a wide. 9. No Balls: A ball bouncing at greater than shoulder height of the batsman when standing in normal stance A ball on the full above batman s waist height A ball which bounces more than two times before reaching the batsman A no ball also applies where bowlers overstep the batting crease or encroach into the return crease in their delivery. 10. LBW: The batsman cannot be given out on the front foot or if the ball pitches outside leg stump 11. Fielding restrictions: No fielder may stand closer than 10 metres from the striker s wicket on the on-side or in front of point on the off-side until the ball has been played by the batsman. 12. Batsmen: If a batsman reaches 50 they must retire immediately and can only return when all other batsmen have been legitimately dismissed. If other players have been retired (prior to reaching 50) they must return to the crease before the batsmen who has retired on 50. If a player retires prior to reaching 50 they may return but only when 7 wickets have fallen (not including retirements). 13. Scoring: Teams at this level should maintain a standard cricket scorebook and if possible utilise the CricHQ scoring system. This will make talent recognition easier and provide indications of any additional coaching required. 14 Junior Cricket Handbook Season
