He is still very young and he will gain much by keeping his eyes open at Lord s over the coming season. Perhaps his chance will come in 1959 but we must be patient and rest content with the boy s very good record todate. All five letters signed in ink by the sender. The letter dated 27th July 1955 and handwritten in Barnes distinctive copperplate handwriting refers to a request for financial assistance in building a Theatre in Melbourne... I am surprised that you haven't got a properly equipped theatre to present your plays, there are enough patrons of the arts in Melbourne... that if someone started a fund the sum required, to build you a theatre, would soon be raised. Melbourne has some delightful memories for me during my three visits. I made some charming friends, but this will have to remain a memory I m afraid. The letter dated 2nd March 1948 and nicely signed by Barnes. The letter folded and laid down to a album page, file holes to right hand border, nicks/small tears to page edges not affecting text. Nottinghamshire, Sussex & England Excellent three page handwritten letter from Shaw regarding the Australian team chosen for the 1893 tour, William Murdoch and Sussex s preparations for the coming season. I am pleased to say I have arrived home fit and well and I left his Lordship (Sheffield?) at Naples and he was as well as ever I have seen him. I see by the papers I have read from Australia that the team is finally chosen and that they have decided not to pick Murdoch if so no doubt he will be able to play in all Sussex matches. Myself I hope it is true and that he will play, as in my opinion he has no right to play for Australia. He has duly qualified to play for a county in England. He would be useful to Sussex as he would relieve Mr Newham a great deal and then I believe Mr Newham would play better and would then give moe confidence to the rest of the team. I have spoken to Mr (Arthur) Shrewsbury about an old bat for you but he says he has given all his away but when he has another he will try and save it for you. I will be pleased to let you have one of mine and will bring it with me... when I come down which will be about the 20th April for practice should the weather be good...
