Introduction Welcome On behalf of the International Cricket Council, welcome to the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup (U19 CWC) 2010 in New Zealand. This tournament, with 48 matches taking place over 16 days involving 16 teams in four cities across this beautiful country, is designed as a finishing school for the world s best young players. Here they will learn all about the stresses, strains and joys of a major international cricket tournament. The U19 CWC also introduces players to all the protocols and obligations that will be in place at a later stage in their careers when they participate in future major ICC events. Admission to all matches during the tournament is free of charge so we are hopeful that cricket fans in Christchurch, Queenstown, Palmerston North and Napier as well as those supporters traveling with the teams, will turn out to view what should be some high-class and exciting cricket. And for those who are unable to make it in person to the venues to watch the action, our agreement with ESPN-STAR Sports (ESS) will ensure they will be able to keep up to date. ESS came on board in 2007 as the ICC s official broadcast partner and we believe it is doing an outstanding job of covering the game for the benefit of all. I know the players have all worked hard to be here and, while I hope the best team wins, I trust that all the participants will relish every minute of the tournament. David Morgan ICC President I am delighted to extend a very warm welcome to cricketers, team support staff, cricket fans and news media from around the world as you gather for the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup 2010 in New Zealand. New Zealand Cricket is delighted to be hosting international cricket s up and coming young talent in this prestigious tournament. To be given the opportunity to hold the event was an honour for New Zealand, and a reflection of the reputation we have as an international tournament host. This is the second time New Zealand has hosted the U19 CWC, having hosted the competition in New Zealand Cricket s internationally-renowned facilities at Lincoln will be the base for the tournament. Other parts of the country will also see U19 CWC action with two pools and some post-pool play hosted at other locations including Queenstown, Napier and Palmerston North. Cricket followers around the world will also be watching. Television coverage of key matches will be broadcast across the globe, and we welcome the contingent of world sports media who are attending the event. If you are a visitor to New Zealand, we hope that away from the cricket you will have an opportunity to enjoy something of what our country has to offer including stunning scenery, adventure opportunities and cultural heritage. 4 Group: A India The current ICC U19 Cricket World Cup champion will be hopeful of repeating its success in the 2008 event in Malaysia and retaining the trophy in New Zealand. India had also earlier won the tournament in 2000 and was runners up to Pakistan in the 2006 event. India players celebrate winning the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2008 And its top players, including skipper Ashok Menaria, will be looking to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli who have graduated from the U19 side to the senior side. The squad had a dream run at the 2008 event, defeating Papua New Guinea by 195 runs, South Africa by six wickets and West Indies by 50 runs in the group stages and England by seven wickets in the quarterfinals. In the semi-final against New Zealand, India emerged victorious by three wickets to meet South Africa in the finals and defeated it by 12 runs (Duckworth-Lewis method) to lift the title. In recent games, India has defeated Australia 2-1 in an ODI series in April 2009 and the Test series between the same sides was drawn 1-1. Mandeep Singh Batsmen to look out for include lefthander Harpreet Singh, Mayank Agarwal (160 against Australia), Mandeep Singh and Manan Sharma. Harpreet scored 125 against Australia in the first Test while Mandeep smashed 126 in the same game. Ashok Menaria (captain) Akshath Reddy Gaurav Jathar Harmeet Singh Harpreet Singh Harshal Patel Jaydev Unadkad K.L. Rahul Manan Sharma Mandeep Singh Mayank Agarwal Sandeep Sharma Saurav Netrawalkar Sufiyan Shaikh Zahid Ali Meanwhile, medium pacer Harshal Patel is expected to be one of the stars of the bowling line-up. The side have been able to benefit from some expert advice on what it is like to play in New Zealand from one of the all-time greats in international cricket as Sachin Tendulkar spent some time with the team, ahead of its preevent tour to South Africa. Mayank Agarwal A belligerent opening batsman, he considers his playing style to be similar to Virender Sehwag, who is also his idol. Came to prominence with 160 off 142 balls against Australia in 2009 and is expected to be one of the stars of the event. ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP NEW ZEALAND

Group: A England England won the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 1998 with a team featuring Robert Key and Graeme Swann and it will be hoping to break the 12-year drought in England s U19 team that took on Bangladesh in July 2009 The current team, coached by former Northamptonshire, Sussex and Yorkshire fast-medium bowler Mark Robinson, features players from nine of the 18 first-class counties. One of the key players will be Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes, who will be returning to his country of birth. Born in Christchurch, where both his mother and father played league cricket, he made an instant impact on his county debut, when he dismissed Mark Ramprakash. Joining Stokes in a strong England side is talented Hampshire batsman James Vince who has played nine first-class matches since making his debut against Loughborough UCCE in May Vince s talent has Jack Manuel impressed former England coach Duncan Fletcher who describes his batting style as being not too dissimilar from former captain and one of England s best Michael Vaughan, who Vince regards as his cricketing hero. Another player in the England side to keep an eye on is Leicestershire s 18-yearold Nathan Buck. The fast bowler, who represented England at U16 and U17 levels before turning 17, made his first-class debut in April Azeem Rafiq (captain) Adam Ball Michael Bates Paul Best Danny Briggs Nathan Buck Jos Buttler Chris Dent Matthew Dunn Ateeq Javid Jack Manuel David Payne Joe Root Ben Stokes James Vince At the age of 15, Buck was training with the likes of current England internationals Stuart Broad and Graham Onions at the England A academy and has commented that he gained a lot by working with England bowling coach Ottis Gibson. Last time out in the competition, English finished joint fifth with Australia, after suffering a quarterfinal loss to eventual winners India, and recent series suggest that it may struggle to improve on that performance. England won a two-match Test series against Bangladesh 1-0 in July but lost a five-match one-day series at home 2-1 to the same team, before suffering a comprehensive 5-2 defeat in the return series in October and November. It also lost a Twenty20 series and an ODI series to South Africa in January Danny Briggs Danny Briggs was in outstanding form on England s recent tour to Bangladesh, where he finished as his side s leading wicket-taker with eight wickets. He broke into the Hampshire first team in 2009, having played in the county s youth teams since the age of the nine. The slow left-arm spinner lists Daniel Vettori as his cricketing hero and admits he tries to model his bowling style on the New Zealand skipper. ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP NEW ZEALAND

Group: A Afghanistan Afghanistan s success at senior level in recent years seems to have inspired its U19 side to greater success at international level. Having narrowly missed out on qualification to the 2008 event, when it lost to Nepal by 48 runs in Afghanistan s successful team at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier the final of the ACC U19 Elite Cup in 2007, it gained revenge over the same opposition with a six-wicket victory at the Asian qualifier in 2009 to win a place at the 10-team global qualifier. After arriving late for the global qualifier in Canada, due to visa issues, it secured an excellent second place to qualify for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup for the first time, losing only to Canada and Ireland in the competition. One of the key players to keep an eye out for during the tournament is all-rounder Noor-ul- Haq Malekzai who topped the batting averages for his side during the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier. In seven matches, he scored 216 runs at an average of 54. Malekzai s team-mate, Zakiullah Zaki was the most successful bowler in the qualifiers. In eight matches, the left-arm spinner walked away with 21 wickets. Afghanistan s senior side has enjoyed a Noor-ul-Haq meteoric rise up the international rankings in the past two years, winning the titles at the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 5, 4 and 3 events, before securing fifth place at the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in 2009 which means that it has secured ODI status until Shir Mohammad Shirzai (c) Aftab Alam Afsar Khan Anwar Anwari Ayub Khan Hamza Hotak Hashmat Shaidi Izat Dawlatzai Javed Ahmadi Khushal Rasooli M.S. Aminzai Murad Ali Noor-ul-Haq Yamin Ahmadzai Zakiullah Zaki It also recently claimed the ACC Twenty20 Cup title, defeating the United Arab Emirates in the final, which was excellent preparation for its participation in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier that will take place in February 2010 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The next generation of players will be keen to stake a claim for selection at senior level by performing well at this event and with an opening game showdown against India, which will be shown across the world on the global television broadcast, don t be surprised if Afghanistan continue its habit of surprising everybody during the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. Zakiullah Zaki Leg-spinner Zakiullah Zaki was in outstanding form at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, with his 21 wickets coming at an average of 11.09, with an outstanding strikerate of taking a wicket every 20 balls. Confident in his own ability, comparing his playing style to that of Shane Warne, he lists his cricketing hero as India s Robin Uthappa. ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP NEW ZEALAND

Group: A Hong Kong Hong Kong will make its tournament debut in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2010 in New Zealand and will be hopeful of gaining valuable experience at the event. The Asian side qualified for the tournament after finishing sixth in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Canada in September 2009 on the basis of a superior run-rate to Uganda and the Netherlands after earning just three wins from nine games. In the regional qualifier held in April 2009, Hong Kong qualified along with Afghanistan, who it will face again in the group stages of this tournament, from the Asia region. It won the semi-final against Qatar by 23 runs after a four-wicket haul by Niaz Ali and in the final, an excellent all-round performance from the young Hong Kong squad saw it defeat Afghanistan by eight wickets. Irfan Ahmed (who made 293 runs in the global qualifying event in 2009), Nizakat Khan and Ashish Gadhia will be the mainstay of the batting order while medium pacer Aizaz Khan (15 wickets at the qualifier) and Niaz Ali will be instrumental in the bowling attack. Ahmed, who won the Hong Kong Cricketer of the Year award in , is an exciting talent, who lists Niaz Ali Abdul Razzaq as his hero, and is also capable of taking important wickets with his previous victims including former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik. He won the Ben Holliaoke Trophy for the leading player at the Hong Kong Sixes event in 2009 and has already spoken of his ambitions of playing in the Indian Premier League in the future. Irfan Ahmed Jamie Atkinson (captain) Aditya Kanthan Aizaz Khan Ashish Gadhia Asif Khan Harmeet Singh Irfan Ahmed Niaz Ali Nizakat Khan Mark Chapman Max Tucker Alex Smith Shakeel Haq Vikash Vaswani Waqas Barkat Many of the squad have gained vital experience of senior international cricket playing in Hong Kong s Pepsi ICC World Cricket League campaign, which saw it play in places as diverse as Argentina, Australia and Tanzania, although its efforts were to end in disappointment in January 2009 when it failed to make Jamie Atkinson it to the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier. And some of the side even featured as part of Hong Kong s team at the Asia Cup in 2008, gaining the experience of playing in front of the television cameras against cricketing super powers including India and Pakistan in ODI matches. With India, England and Afghanistan likely to provide some challenging competition, Hong Kong will be determined to make the most of its debut on the global stage. A talented wicket-keeper batsman, whose father played Minor Counties cricket for Durham. He made his ODI debut at the age of just 17 years and 305 days against Pakistan at the Asia Cup, which cemented a bizarre record in cricketing history. In taking part in the game he became the first person born in the 1990s to play an ODI match! He also impressed at that event when he made a lively 23 against India batting at number three. 9 Group: B South Africa South Africa will be going into the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup on the back of reaching the final two years ago and much is expected of the young Proteas squad this time around. Dale Deeb in action against England U19 Wayne Parnell proved to be in inspirational form for his side at the 2008 event, finishing the tournament as the leading wickettaker, before quickly becoming a regular in the senior team. Wayne Parnell at the ICC U19 CWC 08 Last time around, the team claimed victory in the initial stages over West Indies by three wickets and Papua New Guinea by seven wickets, losing its other group match to India. It thrashed Bangladesh by 201 runs in the quarter-finals and previous title holders Pakistan by 98 runs (Duckworth-Lewis) in the semis. In the rain-interrupted final, despite limiting India to 159, South Africa failed to get the much-needed runs and fell short by 12 runs on the Duckworth- Lewis method. South Africa was also the runner up in the 2002 event in New Zealand losing to Cameron White s Australia by seven wickets, with an impressive side that featured the likes of Graeme Smith, Ryan McLaren and Hashim Amla, who was the skipper of the team. Josh Richards (captain) Colin Ackermann Cody Chetty Dale Deeb Rabian Engelbrecht Dominic Hendricks Graham Hume Simon Khomari Matthew Kennedy Samuel Mofokeng Bokang Mosena Malcolm Nofal Jerry Nqolo Stephan Smith David White In recent games, South Africa won both an ODI series against England 3-2, winning the decisive game of the series, and also two Twenty20 matches against the same team in January It warmed up for this tournament with a home tri-series against India and Sri Lanka. Players also had the chance to spend time together during the Khaya Majola U19 cricket week in Benoni in mid December, in an event which is regarded as the pinnacle of high school cricket. Under the experienced guidance of Ray Jennings, a coach who has worked with the senior South Africa side as well as the Bangalore Royal Challengers, the youngsters have been selected from a series of camps and through the Talent Acceleration Programme (TAP). In a group with Australia, Ireland and the USA, the side has to be regarded as one of the favourites for the event and it will be desperate to become the first South African side to win the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. Josh Richards Regarded as a highly exciting prospect, the 18 year-old is also captain of the South African schools side. An excellent wicket-keeper, his cricketing hero is Jonty Rhodes not only for his skills on the field of play, but off it as well. Away from cricket, he drums for a jazz band and enjoys playing the piano! ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP NEW ZEALAND

Group: B Australia Winner of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in the inaugural event in 1988 and also in 2002, Australia U19s will be hoping to improve on its recent displays. It has not enjoyed an outstanding year at U19 level, Australia s U19 side will be looking to capture the title losing a series 3-2 to Sri Lanka in Darwin in October 2009 after a six-wicket loss to Sri Lanka at the Marrara Cricket Ground in the final ODI of the series. It had also earlier lost a home ODI series in April 2009 to India 2-1 but drew the Test series 1-1. The team had a disappointing event at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 2008 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia when it finished joint fifth with England after losing to Pakistan in the quarter final. Players to look out for in 2010 include the batsmen Nic Maddinson and Tom Beaton, while captain Mitchell Marsh was the leading run-scorer in the series against India with 251 runs including a century. Medium pacers Jackson Coleman and off-spinner Jason Floros are expected to shine with the ball in the tournament. Floros from Queensland was named the Player of the Championship following the conclusion of Australia s U19 domestic event, joining an elite list of players such as Steve Waugh, Ian Healy, Adam Gilchrist, Graham Manou and Callum Ferguson who have all won the honour previously. In a group with South Africa, who finished as runners-up in 2008, Ireland and the USA, Australia will be hoping to enjoy a reasonably smooth passage to the quarterfinals, but it will need to improve on recent performances if it is replicate the success of the 2002 Australia side that won the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, also in New Zealand. And the example of Phillip Hughes, who within a year of playing for Australia in the U19 event in 2008 was playing Test cricket for the senior team in South Africa, scoring incredible twin centuries later in the series in Durban to secure a famous series win, will be enough to motivate players of the rewards on offer for good performances at this tournament. If the players need advice on how to win at the top level, they won t have to look far. Captain Mitchell Marsh is the son of former Australian opener Geoff Marsh; Nic Buchanan is son of World Cup winning coach John Buchanan and Alister McDermott is son of fast bowler Craig. Nic Maddinson A hugely promising talent, opening batsman Maddinson was part of the New South Wales U19 side that captured the Australia U19 National Championships, with his excellent displays with the bat winning a place in the team of the tournament. He topped the batting averages in the home series against Sri Lanka in October, averaging almost 72 with the bat, including a brilliant 133 not out. Mitchell Marsh (captain) Tim Armstrong Tom Beaton Nick Buchanan Jackson Coleman Luke Doran Ben Dougall Jason Floros Josh Hazlewood Alex Keath Nic Maddinson Alister McDermott Kane Richardson Tom Triffitt Adam Zampa ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP NEW ZEALAND

Group: B Ireland Ireland qualified for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2010 in New Zealand after strong performances in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Canada in September 2009 which saw it top the table to win the event. Ireland celebrates winning the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier Shane Getkate Having earlier won the European qualifying tournament, despite losing to Scotland, it defeated Vanuatu by 291 runs in its final global qualifying game, to seal the title after winning eight of its nine games in the tournament. In the previous edition of the tournament in Kuala Lumpur in 2008, Ireland was placed 13th after defeating Zimbabwe by six wickets. The group matches saw the side put in a series of disappointing performances losing to England by ten wickets, Bermuda by 20 runs and Bangladesh by eight wickets. Batsmen expected to make a mark in New Zealand include Paul Stirling, who smashed 164 against Vanuatu in the qualifying event, Stuart Thompson, skipper Andrew Balbirnie and James Shannon. Andrew Balbirnie (captain) Ben Ackland Jordan Coghlan Adrian D Arcy George Dockrell Shane Getkate Graeme McCarter Graham McDonnell Lee Nelson Stuart Poynter Eddie Richardson James Shannon Paul Stirling Stuart Thompson Craig Young Opening bowler Shane Getkate, who picked up a six-wicket haul against Vanuatu, Craig Young, George Dockrell, Lee Nelson and Graham McDonnell will lead the bowling attack. Placed in a group with Australia and South Africa, it will face a real test if it wants to achieve a top eight finish, especially having lost to its other group opponent, the USA, at the qualifying event last September. But Ireland has a solid track at this level, with the tournament proving to be an excellent breeding ground for its future international stars. This is no better illustrated than by the fact Eoin Morgan s 606 runs for his country of birth put him top of the all-time run-scorers list. Paul Stirling A hugely promising talent, Stirling has already shown his potential at international level for the senior team, making a promising 30 off just 26 balls against England in August 2009 and also being part of the squad at the ICC World Twenty , and is widely expected to be part of the squad that will go to the ICC Cricket World Cup He has prepared for this tournament by attending a Gatorade ICC High Performance batting camp. ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP NEW ZEALAND

Group: B USA The USA U19 team qualified for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup after securing fifth place in the qualification tournament in Toronto in September last year. Ryan Corns was the star of that campaign and he will again be a key player for the USA, who under the captaincy of Shiva Vashishat will be determined to have an impact at this event. Much will be expected of leg-spinner Saqib Saleem, who took 17 wickets in the qualifying tournament, while off-spinner Asad Ghous also displayed some encouraging potential, particularly when he took five wickets against Afghanistan. This will be the USA s second appearance in the competition after a disappointing campaign in 2006 where it suffered heavy defeats to the likes of South Africa, New Zealand and the West Indies, although it did record a victory over Namibia. As part of a new strategic partnership with New Zealand Cricket, the USA will benefit from excellent preparation from the event. This is part of a long-term ambition to improve its results and develop interest in the game in a country where an estimated 200,000 play the sport every weekend. Under new USACA Chief Executive, Don Lockerbie, there is strong desire for the USA to return back up the rankings, after a series Naseem Jamali of off-field challenges, and he has listed Project 15 as one of the key pillars of a new strategic plan. This includes getting the national team back into the top 15 in the world rankings and winning a place at the ICC Cricket World Cup in Henry Wardley Shiva Vashishat (captain) Salman Ahmad Regis Burton Ryan Corns Muhammad Asad Ghous Naseer Jamali Abhijit Joshi Azurdeen Mohammed Saqib Saleem Gregory Sewdial Yash Shah Hammad Shahid Sammi Siddiqui Steven Taylor Henry Wardley Its senior team has a huge month in February 2010, taking part in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in the UAE before taking the first step on the pathway to the 2015 World Cup at the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 5 in Nepal. Many of the U19 side will be hoping to press their claims to be involved in team selection for these prestigious events. It faces an extremely tough group at this tournament, taking on Australia, South Africa and Ireland, who it defeated at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, but the experience gained in the campaign should stand it in good stead for the exciting challenges ahead. Ryan Corns Ryan Corns won the Player of the Tournament at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, scoring 230 runs and taking 13 wickets, and there will be a lot of pressure on him to deliver some successful performances at this tournament. 17 Group: C New Zealand The closest the Kiwi squad has come to winning the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup event was in 1998 in South Africa when it lost to England by seven wickets in the final. Hosts of the event in 2002, where it failed to progress beyond the semi-finals; the current side will be hoping to do better this time around. The New Zealand U19 team celebrates New Zealand had a good run in the previous event in Kuala Lumpur in 2008, when it defeated Zimbabwe by 98 runs and Malaysia by eight wickets, but lost to Pakistan by 27 runs in the group stages. It defeated Sri Lanka by 79 runs in the quarter finals but lost to eventual winners India by three wickets (Duckworth-Lewis) in the semi-finals, despite the impressive efforts of Tim Southee who took 17 wickets at the tournament. The side will depend on Michael Bracewell, the highest Kiwi run-getter in the ODI series against England in 2008 with 160 runs, whose uncle is New Zealand legend John Bracewell, as well as Corey Anderson, while Doug Bracewell will be an important bowler. The Bracewell connection is just one Corey Anderson of a number of interesting family cricket stories among the New Zealand team. Tom Latham s father, Rod, played four Test matches for his country, while Logan van Beek s grandfather, Simpson Guillen, is one of only 14 men to play Test cricket for two countries (West Indies and New Zealand). Craig Cachopa (captain) Corey Anderson Tom Blundell Harry Boam Doug Bracewell Michael Bracewell Dane Cleaver Jono Hickey Tim Johnston Tom Latham Jimmy Neesham Bevan Small Mattie Thomas Logan Van Beek Ben Wheeler Knowing the conditions will be a huge advantage for the home team and it should have an excellent chance of progressing to the latter stages of the competition. But the side hasn t played much international cricket in comparison to some of the other leading teams and this lack of competitive action as a team unit could prove crucial when faced by the pressure of playing in an international event. Harry Boam After moving from England as a child, having been born in Birmingham, Boam has established himself as one of New Zealand s leading young players. He made his first appearance for the Wellington Firebirds while still at college, winning a contract with the side while still a schoolboy, and his all-round skills have already had an impact at senior domestic level. His cricketing hero is Ricky Ponting, although he likens his game to Jacques Kallis as he plays a similar role to the South Africa all-rounder in the New Zealand side. ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP NEW ZEALAND

Group: C Sri Lanka Sri Lanka start the event as one of the favourites to win the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup having enjoyed an excellent finish to 2009, where it won a limited-overs series against Australia and also captured a tri-series at home to Bangladesh and Pakistan in December. Sri Lanka players celebrate against Australia U19 in 2009 Its 3-2 win in Australia, which meant it had become the first national side from Sri Lanka to win a series in Australia, was credited to detailed warm-up preparations, where it played a total of 20 practice matches ahead of the series, as well as to the input of team consultant Aravinda de Silva, who was working to support former Sri Lanka international, Naveed Nawaz, as team coach. Rumesh Buddika Having sealed that series in the deciding encounter, it again illustrated that it had the nerve for the big occasion when it defeated Pakistan by one wicket off the final ball of the game to capture the tri-series in December. Sri Lanka hosted the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 2000 and 2006 and was runnerup in the former event losing to India by six wickets in the final. In the 2008 event in Malaysia, it had a mixed tournament which started brilliantly with impressive wins over Australia, Namibia and Nepal, but ended in disappointment when it lost to New Zealand by 79 runs in the quarter-final and then to England by eight runs (D/L method) in the fifth-place play-off semi-final. Chatura Peiris (captain) Andri Berenger Banuka Rajapaksa Charith Jayampathi Danishka Gunathilleke Denuwan Rajakaruna Kasun Madushanka Kithuruwan Vithanage Kushan Apputhantri Kankanamge Lahiru Jayaratne Maduka Liyanapathiranage Rumesh Buddika Rushan Jaleel Saranga Rajaguru Udara Jayasundera Sri Lanka will expect runs to come in from hard-hitter Banuka Rajapaksa, Rumesh Buddika and Kithruwan Vithanage. Medium pacers Chathura Peiris and Charith Jayampathi and spinner Rushan Jaleel were instrumental against Australia and will look forward to a good performance in the tournament. Placed in a group with New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Canada it should progress comfortably into the last eight and it will be hoping it will once again be able to keep its nerve when it matters. Banuka Rajapaksa His stunning 154 not out in a sevenwicket victory against Australia U19 in 2009 highlighted his potential and he has already featured at senior domestic level in Twenty20 cricket, with a strikerate of almost a run a ball. He lists Kumar Sangakkara as his cricketing hero, although compares his game to Adam Gilchrist due to both having an aggressive style of batting. A pet lover, being particularly interested in dogs, he also enjoys playing squash and swimming in his spare time. ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP NEW ZEALAND

Group: C Zimbabwe Zimbabwe will head into the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2010 in New Zealand desperate to make a mark in the tournament after some disappointing performances in recent years. But Kevin Curran s side will face a difficult test if Tatenda Taibu is one of a number of stars to have emerged for Zimbabwe at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup it wants to secure a top eight finish after being placed in a strong group which also features New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Canada. Peter Moor Tinotenda Mutombodzi In the group stages of the 2008 event, Zimbabwe lost all its games, losing to Pakistan by 87 runs, Malaysia by 70 runs and New Zealand by 98 runs. It then suffered a crushing defeat to Nepal by 99 runs in the ninth placed play-off, defeated Malaysia by 44 runs in the next stage of the competition, before losing to Ireland by six wickets in the 13th place play-off. In recent matches, Zimbabwe U19s has lost one-day series 5-0 to Bangladesh and 6-1 to Pakistan. It will draw comfort, though, from the fact that Pakistan is a two-time winner of this event and the consolation victory against this opponent illustrates that on its day it could be a dangerous side for anybody to face. Dylon Higgins and Tinotenda Mutombodzi will be important players with the bat while Steve Chimhamhiwa is also highly rated. With Zimbabwe s senior team going through a transitional stage, players will know that spots in the squad for the ICC World Twenty20, that will take place in the Caribbean in April and May, are potentially up for grabs. Dylon Higgins (captain) Stephen Chimhamhiwa Gary Chirimuuta Tendai Chatara Scott Daly Andrew Lindsay Natsai M Shangwe Dean Mashawidza Peter Moor Simon Mugava Tinotenda Mutombodzi Richard Muzhange Calum Price Nathan Waller Mazvita Zambuko Tatenda Taibu and Brendan Taylor are among the many names that have used the U19 event as an opportunity to further their careers and the fact some of the squad are getting their chance in a restructured domestic set-up, allied with improving opportunities in international cricket, means that these are exciting times to be a young cricketer in Zimbabwe. Dylon Higgins The 18-year-old burst onto the firstclass scene in 2009, taking 11 wickets on his first-class debut. A leg-spinner, who unsurprisingly lists Shane Warne as his cricketing hero, has plenty of family heritage in the game with his uncle, Colin Robertson, and brother, Ryan, both having appeared for Zimbabwe. His cousin, Calum Price, is also a member of the current Zimbabwe U19 squad. ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP NEW ZEALAND

Group: C Canada Canada participated in the 2002 and 2004 edition of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup and will be hoping to win its first ever match in the competition. The team secured its place in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup after being placed fourth with seven wins in nine games at the qualifier in September Canada s squad at the qualifier for ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2010 Canada remained unbeaten in the regional qualifying tournament winning all its five matches to top the table with ten points. Among its most notable performance was when it scored against Argentina and went on to win by a huge margin of 268 runs, with Hiral Patel winning the Man of the Series Award for his 305 runs at an average in excess of 100. Arsalan Qadir At the global qualifier it took advantage of being on home soil to put in a string of impressive performances, most notably when it defeated second-placed Afghanistan. Many believe that this is the most impressive Canada U19 side ever to have been assembled, with some of the team having already broken into the senior side to play both ODI cricket and in the ICC Intercontinental Cup, the first-class competition for the leading Associate and Affiliate sides. Rustam Bhatti (captain) Manny Aulakh Parth Desai Darius D Souza Ruvindu Gunasekara Hardik Kotak Nitish Kumar Usman Limbada Zain Mahmood Asif Manjra Hiral Patel Riyazkhan Pathan Harpreet Singh Arsalan Qadir Hamza Tariq Batsmen Ruvindu Gunasekera, skipper Rustam Bhatti, Darius D Souza and Usman Limbada and all-rounder Patel, who took 17 wickets with his spin bowling in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, Nithish Kumar and medium pacer Arsalan Qadir will be some of the key players to watch at the event. Canada faces a tough group, comprising hosts New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in the opening stages of the competition, and it will be determined to make up for some disappointing results at the event in its previous two outings. It has never won a match at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 12 matches to date, avoiding defeat on only one occasion when it tied a game with Bangladesh in But it has undergone extensive preparation for the event, including travelling to St. Kitts in December for a training camp and warm-up matches against the West Indies, before preparing in a five-day training camp in Auckland. Hiral Patel All-rounder Hiral Patel starred with the bat in the regional qualifying event and with the ball in the global qualifier. The slow left-arm spinner has already made his debut for the full national team, playing in two ODIs against Kenya in 2009, and is tipped to become a regular in ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP NEW ZEALAND

Group: D Pakistan Pakistan will be looking to continue its excellent recent record at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup where it has won two consecutive events and recorded a semi-final appearance during the course of the last three tournaments. The Pakistan side that took part in a tri-series in December And it will again be considered to be one of the favourites to win the title, hoping to follow in the footsteps of the senior side that enjoyed a scintillating victory at the ICC World Twenty Ahmad Shahzad The 2008 U19 event saw Pakistan winning all its group matches, beating Malaysia by eight wickets, Zimbabwe by 87 runs and New Zealand by 27 runs. It proceeded to defeat Australia by six wickets in the quarter finals but was out-smarted by South Africa by 98 runs (Duckworth-Lewis method) in the semi-finals to end its bid for a hat-trick tournament victory after its triumphs in 2004 and In recent games, Pakistan thrashed Zimbabwe to win an ODI series 6-1 in October 2009, although it lost a thrilling triseries final in December 2009 after Sri Lanka snatched a one-wicket victory off the last ball of the game, having lost a group match to the same team by seven runs earlier in the tournament. Azeem Ghumman (captain) Ahmad Shahzad Ahsan Ali Anop Ravi Fayyaz Butt Hammad Azam Kaleem Sana Muhammad Babar Azam Muhammad Naeem Muhammad Waqas Rameez Aziz Raza Hassan Sarmad Bhatti Shahzaib Ahmed Usman Qadir Hammad Azam is a useful all-rounder while skipper Azeem Ghumman was the highest run-getter in the series against Zimbabwe with 248 runs. With the ball, spinners Raza Hasan and Usman Qadir will both play important roles. It will expect to comfortably progress through the group stage, where it will face Bangladesh, who it defeated by 68 runs in the Tri-Series in November 2009, West Indies and Papua New Guinea, and it will be fascinating to see if the side is capable of winning a record third ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. Raza Hassan Raza Hassan was in outstanding form for Pakistan U19s in the series against Zimbabwe in 2009, taking nine wickets, with an excellent bowling average of and a superb economy rate of Although still only 17 years old, he made his first-class debut at the age of 16, taking 3-24 on his debut to bowl his side, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, to an innings victory. 22

Group: D Bangladesh Bangladesh has the potential to make a significant impact Bangladesh U19 will be hoping for a series of successful performances at the event at this tournament and progress through to the latter stages of the event. Unlike some of the other leading sides, its U19 players have had an opportunity to play as a team on a regular basis in the build-up to the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, with a hectic schedule against some of the world s leading teams. Anamul Haque This has resulted in a number of notable series victories which illustrates the potential of this team at U19 level. It thrashed Sri Lanka 4-1, with a string of impressive performances that included a masterful 129 not out from Amit Majumder. Fast bowler Kamrun Ikmal finished the series as the leading wicket-taker. It followed up that victory with a dramatic series win over England, clinching the series at Hove with a thrilling one-wicket triumph in the deciding match, when the home team failed to take advantage of a run-out opportunity, although it did lose the Test Match series 1-0. To prove that the limited-overs series was no fluke, it comfortably beat England 5-2 in the return series, winning the opening four matches of the seven-game series, with Tasamul Haque the leading run scorer with 210 runs and medium pacer Saikat Ali finishing as the top wicket-taker for the series. Mahmudul Hasan (captain) Alauddin Babu Amit Majumder Anamul Haque Arman Badsha Hasan Raju Kamrul Islam Muminul Hoque Showrav Nur Hossain Nurul Hasan Saikat Ali Shabbir Rahman Shaker Ahmed Soumya Sarkar Tasamul Hoque Zimbabwe were then subjected to a comprehensive 5-0 whitewash, with Mominul Haque and Anamul Haque in excellent form with the bat. The only blip for the young Bangladeshis has been failing to make the final of a rain affected triseries competition also involving Sri Lanka and Pakistan in December, losing two matches, although it did record one victory over the host nation in Colombo. Some from the side already have experience of playing in an ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, suffering a disappointing defeat to South Africa at the quarter-final stage in 2008, although it had defeated England in the group stages of the tournament. And the opportunities to try and win a place in an inconsistent senior side, currently going through a transitional face, are also on offer for those who can inspire Bangladesh to glory at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. Amit Majumder Centuries against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in 2009 have illustrated the talent of this exciting right-handed batsman, who made his debut in first-class cricket in He played just one match at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, but the teenager, who turned 19 on New Year s Day in 2010, is sure to feature regularly in this edition of the competition. ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP NEW ZEALAND

Group: D West Indies The closest the young Caribbean side has come to winning the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup was in 2004 in Bangladesh when the side led by Dinesh Ramdin lost to Pakistan by 25 runs in the final. Chris Gayle Since then it has not had a tournament record to boast of, losing to Bangladesh by four wickets in the fifth place play-off semifinal in Colombo in February 2006 and being placed ninth in the 2008 event in Kuala Lumpur, after being eliminated by the eventual finalists, India and South Africa, in the group stages. Shamarh Brooks with the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2008 Plate Trophy Andre Coley, the former Jamaica wicketkeeper, has been appointed as head coach for the tournament, following his success at U19 level with the Jamaica three-day and limited-over sides, and will be looking to skipper Andre Creary for inspiration on the field of play. The West Indies prepared for the event by taking part in the President s Cup in October 2009, alongside senior territorial teams. Although it failed to win a match, the preparation was valuable and it came close to defeating Barbados, losing in the end by two wickets. Left-handed opening batter Evin Lewis topped the batting averages for his side in that event, being the only player to pass fifty, while spinner Akeem Dewar showed promise with the ball, although the matches were hampered by bad weather. Andre Creary (captain) Jermaine Blackwood Nelson Bolan Kraigg Brathwaite John Campbell Yannic Cariah Akeem Dewar Shane Dowrich Nicholson Gordon Trevon Griffiths Jason Holder Keon Joseph Evin Lewis Yannick Ottley Jomel Warrican Facing Pakistan, Bangladesh and Papua New Guinea in the group stages, it will be a tough challenge to make it through to the quarter finals. However, the tournament has a very good track record for being a first international sighting of future stars of the West Indies team. Previous events have featured Jimmy Adams, Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan, so there will be plenty of fun for the spectators in trying to spot a future legend! Kraigg Brathwaite This highly-rated Barbados batter, who made 73 on his first-class debut last year when aged just 16, is expected to be a huge star for his team at this tournament. He was called up to the West Indies Test squad against Bangladesh in July 2009 and was awarded a contract by the West Indies Cricket Board later in the year. ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP NEW ZEALAND

Group: D Papua New Guinea Papua New Guinea qualified for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, after it was placed third in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Canada in September 2009, winning seven of its nine games. This will be the fifth time that Papua New Guinea has played in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier and it has retained some key players since the event was last played in Malaysia in It won all of its matches in the regional qualifying tournament, including defeating strong rivals Vanuatu by nine wickets in the group stages, with Raymond Haoda being named Player of the Tournament, before putting in a series of impressive displays at the global qualifier. Batting will rest firmly on the shoulders of left hander Heni Siaka, who scored an impressive century against Vanuatu in the regional qualifying tournament and who was the top scorer for PNG at the global qualifier with 277 runs, as well as Tony Ura, who also was in excellent touch in Toronto last September scoring 228 runs at that event. The bowling attack will be led by medium pacer John Reva, who took an impressive 7-34 in the global qualifier against the USA, Raymond Haoda and Charles Amini. Papua New Guinea has established itself as the leading non-test playing team in the East Asia-Pacific region. Its senior team currently play in the Pepsi ICC Steven Eno World Cricket League Division Three, having narrowly failed to qualify on run-rate for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier, despite winning four of its five qualifying matches. Heni Siaka John Reva (captain) Charles Amini Sese Bau Jonathan Diho Raymond Haoda Steven Eno Jason Kila Timothy Mou Vagi Oala Rogeauka Roge Heni Siaka Lega Siaka Lega Tau Toua Tom Tony Ura It faces a tough group at this event, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the West Indies, which means it is unlikely to improve on a disappointing record at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup where it has only won one of its 23 matches in the competition. But having finally recorded a victory for the first time in 2008, when it defeated Bermuda by seven wickets, it will be hoping to learn from its experiences and show the emerging talent in the EAP region. And Andy Bichel is sure to bring a winning mentality to his side after joining as national coach last year. Charles Amini He is part of the amazing Amini cricketing dynasty that has dominated the Papua New Guinea cricketing landscape to such an extent the national cricket ground is even named after the family. His grandfather and father both captained the national side, brothers Chris and Colin have played for the national team, while his mother, Kune, captained the side at the ICC Women s World Cup Qualifier in 2008!
